My friend is a regular at this salon and I've always admired her nails. She told me that Sandra, the owner does the best mani & pedi. So I finally decided to pay this place a visit and I booked an appointment for a manicure. My first impression when I walked into this salon was wow- the décor was very elegant and clean. The receptionist greeted me, offered to hang up my coat and I sat in the waiting area. They have awesome magazines and Essie nail polish to choose from. Sandra then greeted me with a smile and I sat down at the manicure table. The manicure itself was great! Everything was clean and sterile, she asked me how I wanted my nails and paid close attention to details. She filed, clipped & buffed my nails. She also gave me an excellent hand massage and knew a lot about reflexology and pressure points. She is very sweet and will make you feel right at home. You can tell that she definitely knows what she is doing, she took the time to remove the dead skin and she pushed back my cuticles. At the end I was offered complimentary Essie quick dry drops, which worked instantly. They offer it as a $2 add on and although they don't have nail dryers like other places, their service is far from most chop shop nail salons you come across. Everyone here is very friendly and sociable. Way better than sitting quietly, not being able to communicate with the person doing your nails. Not to mention that they have really good music playing. Sandra then offered to do my brows, which were in serious need of a wax. Although I'm generally very cautious about where I go for these kinds of services, I took her up on her offer and I'm glad I did! Painless and quick is how I would describe my waxing experience with her. The wax room was cozy with nice curtains and decor. She paid close attention to detail and left my eyebrows looking flawless! My over all experience was fabulous and I'm glad I found this place as I work around the corner. I was hesitant when reading other reviews but I took my friends word for it. This is going to be my got to place from now on. It's been a week and 2 days, and so far I don't see any unwanted eyebrow hairs starting to grow and my nails are in tact, without any chipping. This is the perfect place for a traditional manicure, as I can't stand the smell of chemicals and fumes from Acrylic nails etc. I have a future appointment scheduled for a manicure and a pedicure with Sandra. Wow what a first impression La marqueza! Worst experience at a salon ever. Thanks for wasting my time.. I should have known better with all the negative bad reviews this salon has. So I initially called the day before and spoke to the receptionist to make a appointment the following day for a consultation AND appointment for a single process, the lady over the phone said that was fine.. Mind you I live in Queens and it takes me an hour to get to this salon. The next day I trekked all the way to the upper east side from queens.. Upon arrival this empty tiny two hair station salon. First impression was that this is a old lady salon the only two customers were two 50 something year old ladies and the stylist there are middle aged and dated looking as well this is not the place to go for a trendy cut or color it seems. So there sat a grouchy looking receptionist whom did not greet me what so ever.. And once I told her I have a appointment she looked clueless and told me to hold on while she grabbed the stylist.. 5 minutes later another grouchy looking women came to speak to me no smile or greeting.. First thing she says to me after asking me what I came for she says "you know a consultation is going to cost you" and we have no appointment time for you today.. Wow umm ok I sat there looking at her dumbfounded.. I told her I booked my consultation and appointment the day before and if there was a misunderstanding if they can squeeze me in for a single process.. Because well your salon is EMPTY.. Grouch #1 and grouch #2 were unsympathetic that I made my way to this crappy salon for nothing.. It appears la marqueza doesn't want my business even though I did come with a life booker deal.. I am a great tipper and would have tipped 40% the REGULAR price if she did a fantastic job... But it appears this salon doesn't make time for life booker deal clients... Horrible! I would never go back again. I had never heard of this place but I was feeling adventurous found them on lifebooker and saw they had a pretty cheap deal, so why not try it out? I booked for the blow out and haircut, decided why not get my legs waxed too. I have very wavy, thick medium/long hair. My hair dresser tamed it pretty well. I asked for side swept bangs which she warned against because I have wavy hair but I'm used to having bangs and am pretty good at styling my hair. She cut a bit too short but they looked fine, so I didn't fuss about it, at the time I thought maybe I would go back. However once I got out of the salon I noticed many chunky strands fell over my bangs, not good. But she does blow out hair wonderfully and fast and I would maybee have come back on a special day and gone to her for a blowout if it had not been for THIS: Let's move on to the waxing. Ladies, they do double dip (big no-no for a bikini, let alone a Brazilian), but seeing as the only thing they were waxing was my legs I did not have a cow about it. What really bothered me was the super rushed job that was done and the immense amount of excess wax left ALL over me. The lady seemed nice but did a horrible job. Aside from some lady outside yelling at the woman doing my waxing to basically finish up already and the chunks of wax still on my legs I was also left still with patches of hair. Now this wax service cost 15 bucks on lifebooker, which is how I booked it, I did not *have* to tip this lady given her horrible job but I went in to tip her 3 bucks, more than deserved for such a crummy job. And this EXTREMELY rude woman takes the money and *yells* at me that I'm *supposed* to tip them the amount the service cost *BEFORE* the lifebooker deal. I'm there thinking WOW way to treat your customers, how about if the service was just THAT horrible and you're lucky you're even getting tip, and I was just being polite. I just hand her over 5 bucks and left. Which in retrospect I should have informed this extremely rude woman that the service was horrible and they should be glad I was tipping the waxing lady at all. Spa week can get you to go to strange places. I tried this place on a whim, and got a massage for $50. The masseuse was good, and I certainly don't regret the experience or price. But I've gone to places like Oasis on Spa Week before, and I'm rather used to showers/lockers/more of a spa environment. To put it bluntly, this is a small salon for old white women with bad tans. My girlfriend opted for the $50 manicure and hair cut, and both came out great. She was around half the age of the rest of the clientele though. I became suspicious when they didn't have any yelp reviews and their website was poorly designed. I say this without prejudice: people who frequent La Marqueza don't use the internet. All-in-all, not a bad place. If your rich mother is coming to visit and staying uptown, you can send her there and she'll feel right at home. I was hesitant to try out La Marqueza because of the negative reviews I noted on here. They had a Lifebooker deal available and I figured to give it shot. Well ladies and gentleman I am so incredibly happy that I did!!! I think I found my new beauty home:-). I had a Mani-Pedi and a Brazilian wax. They started off with my nails, the staff was very friendly and engaging me during the services, so we had a nice chat. I have to shout-out the lady that did my pedicure. I apologize that I don't remember her name, but I think she was from Columbia. She was AMAZING! My feet have rarely been taken care of that well. I was the last client of the day and we were running a bit late, but they took their time and did not rush me at all! The owner of the salon did my wax, and clearly she is an absolute pro when it comes to waxing. It was as quick and painless as waxing can be. Ladies it will always hurt a little bit, so if you are ever expecting a painless wax, you're on crack lol. I can be very critical when it comes to beauty services, because I just want what I want and expect high levels of service for everything. (Possibly a bit jaded with high expectations because of my hospitality background:). I know that excellent service is always possible, so am disappointed and will vocalize it when that doesn't happen. I would say my experience at La Marqueza was perfect. It truly was. They made me feel at home the whole time, and I will most certainly go back. The price point is a bit on the higher end than what I would normally spend on these services, and really higher than what I can afford to spend, so I have purchased some more Lifebooker loots to allow me to go back. On lifebooker you can purchase up to 6 loots per customer, so this will last me a little while:). Please make sure you TIP! I'm surprised this place got a bad rating. I went in today for a Brazilian wax. Found them on lifebooker and called but they honored the lifebooker deal without me having to purchase it online which was great. I was scheduled for 5:30. I got there a few minutes early and they greeted me. My appointment ran 10 mins behind because the lady ahead of me ran late. But no problem. I went to the back room where it's a pretty big space and the ambiance is nice. Sandra did my wax and did an amazing job. She even went over certain areas again to make sure she got it. We also chatted while she was doing the wax which is a great distraction for me and she was really sweet. After I was done she cleaned me up and made sure to walk me to the front. I bought a mani/pedi deal on Lifebooker and here is my experience: * very nice and quiet salon on Lex on the UES. * the are NOT a "nail salon" specifically (they primarily do hair) * I had a very nice, professional, and friendly lady do my mani/pedi * leg massage was on the light side but she took her time. Quite relaxing. * all the manicure tools are sterilized properly (tons of reviews saying they aren't. I saw everything she used was taken out of a proper canister filled with the anti-bacterial/anti-final stuff!) * yes, it's true they don't have the normal pedicure message chairs here, and yes, it's a little uncomfortable (they have these foot soak baths, also, which are clean!) so I knocked a star off for that. Overall, the lady who worked on me, Vicki, was very sweet and totally took her time and paid attention to detail. Just be ready though, that the salon may smell of hair color treatment. Overall, it's $19 well spent! Very nice, courteous, professional staff. And a very clean salon. I'm being so detailed because I saw tons of bad reviews and that just isn't my experience. Totally good, solid mani/pedi experience if you know in advance that it's a beauty salon and not a nail salon, specifically! I purchased a lifebooker deal for a blow out and style. The deal was less than half the price of blowouts, so I grabbed the deal without reading the very mixed reviews. I was a little nervous but I actually had a good experience here. I arrived a few minutes before my appointment on a Saturday afternoon. I gave in my voucher and paid the tax, then they shampooed my hair (which took around 10 min). The salon is small but I thought it was cute. There were two other customers getting hair/nails done too. Carmen did my blowout and she did a great job. I liked how she was able to make bouncy loose curls and lots of volume. She was also done in under 30 minutes. I wouldn't mind going back if I had some type of deal, because the regular prices are pretty high, but I was very happy with my blowout. read more

Aw such a shame about this place. I've been twice and had similar experiences each time. The first was one of the best waxes I've ever had with the exception of double-dipping. I went again hoping the owner would have read my lifebooker review and corrected the bad-dipping, but unfortunately it got worse. I had a different waxer, and she had a bad cold. She used the SAME STICK to do waxing all over my body. I (admittedly) should have said something, but was too mortified. I'm very conflicted about what star rating to give this place, as I loved the experience, but had disastrous results. So I'm going with middle of the road rating. I came here last week with a girlfriend for mani-pedis through Lifebooker (I think they were $25 for each of us). The place is tiny, although well decorated. They only have two pedicure stations. Now, this is a new one for me because they don't have the typical professional pedicure saunas, they have those portable Conair foot baths you can buy for your home for $20. The women were extremely nice and engaged in conversation and joked around with us. The woman who did me could tell I bite my nails. She looked at my jacked-up cuticles and asked if I go to Korean places! My friend liked her mani, but didn't enjoy her pedi - she said her woman rushed it. Still worth the discounted price, though. Now for my horror story: So I have ingrown nails on my big toes. I end up getting an infection the next day on one of them. It doesn't help that I work on my feet for 50 hours a week. I end up going to a urgent care clinic yesterday where they drained the abscess and gave me strong antibiotics. I go back for a follow up today and they end up removing a 1/3 of my nail bed, which is permanent procedure. I'm in extreme pain, even on painkillers and have to miss at least two days of work. Because the use those mini foot baths, which they rinse out in a tiny hand sink, I don't think they get sanitized properly. Beware. I'm never getting my cuticles cut on my feet ever again. read more

This place is a joke. The phone receiver was put down (not on hold) and I could hear the receptionist having a personal conversation with someone for 7 minutes (looked at the timer on my phone). I hung up and tried calling back for 10 minutes and the phone was still off the hook. She finally answered again and couldn't help me reschedule an appointment because her calendar didn't go as far as August so she asked me to call next month. I will NOT be calling next month, I will NOT be rescheduling for anything at this place. In the 17 minutes it took me to cancel and reschedule my appointment, i can't imagine how many phone calls, emails and walk ins were ignored. A spa mani/pedi?! I don't think they know what that means. Yes, I got a deal on Lifebooker, but does that mean give me mediocre service? I wanted to find a nail place near work that I could frequent. It's definitely not here. It was worth the $19 I paid, but not $65 as they advertise. They do not have real pedi chairs. They use an at-home foot soaker that makes you question if it's properly sanitized. You literally get about 10 seconds of massage. I still have thick calluses on my feet due to lack of razoring & scrubbing. And while you are getting your pedi, you are getting your mani as well. It was very uncomfortable. I purchase the deal on life booker for $19 which they advertise for $65. I was better off staying in the hood with the oriental women who knows what they doing. They used an at home pedi tub and tools that are not properly sanitized. And there is NO drying station!!! The service was horrible she never changed the pedicure water and didn't rinse the scrub salts off my feet and legs properly before applying lotion. Saw this place on life booker. They were offering $22 for Brazilian. I thought I'd give it a try since it's close to my house. Receptionist decided to just honor the same price since I haven't purchase the life booker voucher yet. I thought that was a sweet deal! I'm very picky about my Brazilian wax. Brazilian wax usually means all hair off!! This place didn't deliver. And it's sad because the lady who waxed me was extremely nice!!! While in the procedure I even told her to go ahead and wax my legs too since she was nice and accommodating. And I usually wax my legs myself, but I'd figured... Ehh why not! But it wasn't until I was on my trip and I slipped on my bikini and my friend pointed out all these patches in the back that she missed!!! I was soooo embarrassed. I had to rush to another waxing place last minute while on my trip and get the rest done. And it makes me sad because I spent already over $80 at this place for a not Brazilian wax and full legs. Had to write a review for my wax experience. I got a cheap Lifebooker deal for a Brazilian, and decided to brave the lack of reviews. This was several months ago. The waxing area is in the basement and dark--I wasn't expecting much, so this didn't really bother me. But to those whom it might, it's essentially a portion of the basement cornered off with a drop ceiling. The lady who did my wax was a dark-haired, middle-aged woman. I do want to point out that she really was quite nice and friendly (hence the extra star), but there was DEFINITELY double-dipping, and she didn't wear gloves! For a Brazilian! I saw the pile of additional waxing sticks and gloves laying on the table, but I just blankly stared at them and was too shocked to say anything. How awkward and uncomfortable is it to point out these seemingly obvious things to someone wielding hot wax over your genitals, and how do you actually say it? Seriously, someone please tell me. I should have gotten up and left. Especially after she said they were "so busy!" with Brazilians because of the Lifebooker deals. (As a side note, she was also wearing a dangly bracelet that was occasionally touching the areas being waxed...and as a reminder, we're talking about my vagina.) I can't believe it. She *did* stop double-dipping when doing the--ahem--back portion of my Brazilian, but that wasn't much comfort. She didn't pull the skin taut at any point of the wax, except for a brief moment when she asked me to, towards the end. She missed a lot of spots and basically broke a good portion of hair at the skin rather than ripping any out at the root, minus two or three small areas. Is that not the basis of the concept of waxing? Again, the staff were very nice, but it's been less than a week and I already need another wax. I'm not sure if it was just a long day, or if this is how things always are here, but I will be getting that next wax somewhere else. read more

I was a little skeptical going to this place as the reviews were mixed. I bought a $19 lifebooker so if it was really that bad, at least I didn't pay full price for it. Honestly if I could I would give it 3.5 stars. Place is not a nail salon but a salon boutique. They didn't have the traditional pedicure massage chairs which I was disappointed since I always look forward to that. Vicky did my pedicure and she was amazing, the foot massage was to die for, I simply just melted in the chair. Be prepare to spend like an hour for a mani-pedi, not the typical asian place that will get you out of there in 20 min. I find it surprising the other reviews for this place are so poor, although yes, the environment of the salon may seem to be a bit on the older side, I've never had a complaint to escaping the hustle bustle of Manhattan. This place is good for this. I also did a lifebooker deal, I got the cut, 1/2 head highlights, and blow out. I was very happy with the turn out. The gentleman who did my highlights was very helpful and informative, and they did NOT charge me extra for toner which is a big PLUS in my book. They then washed my hair and cut it for me, and then blew it out. The staff was all very nice, everyone besides the guy who did the highlights didn't talk very much. I have a mixed feeling about this place. I got a Lifebooker coupon for Brazilian. I've asked an aesthetician how they prevent the infections if they do double deep. She said they put some wax in a separated jar for each client, which was OK with me. The waxing itself was not a very good experience. The women tried hard, but the wax was way too hot, which was OK at the beginning, but since I asked to leave a stripe of hair in the front area, she started shaping and applied wax to the same place several times. I ended up with mild burns next day. Also, lots of hair grew inwards later. I've done Brazilian before and it was not the case. I'm not sure if this is related to her professionalism or it's just after several waxing hair tend to grow inwards more and more. I also did not enjoy dealing with the burns, but I guess I could ask her to lower the temperature, which I did not. It's just applying to the same spot several times hurt the place. This is the worst place I have ever done my hair!!!!!! I bought a voucher on lifebooker, and I was really excited about trying them out. First I will begin by saying that I had my hair done with Carmen, I showed her a photo of what I wanted done so that there was no confusion. My hair came out super HORRIBLE! It was completely opposite of what I told her I wanted. My highlights came out supper WHITE and she didn't bother putting in any low-lights so now I look like a SKUNK! The worst part of everything is that neither the owner or Carmen offered to fix my hair. I told her how upset I was and how much I didn't like it. She consistently kept saying that "this is what you wanted" WTF! If it was what I wanted why would I be upset, and ask you to fix it? Anyways, no one fixed my hair. They let me leave super unhappy and now I have to pay double to try and get it fixed else where. PLEASE AVOID THIS PLACE IF YOU CAN! I PROMISE YOU THAT NO ONE WILL LISTEN TO WHAT YOU TELL THEM. Review for a mani/pedi purchased for $25 from lifebooker, normally $58. Highly recommended. The spa is lovely and clean. The owner, Sandra, personally did my mani/pedi. After backpacking Europe for 3 months, my toenails had turned into talons. They were in rough shape - callouses, broken nails, frightening cuticles. Sandra patiently handled all of the above and left my feet looking like new. The mani was great too - we even had a thorough conversation about horoscope pairings. I had one woman doing my pedi (Vicky) and another one doing my mani (didn't get her name but she's a pretty Salvadorian woman with really cool glasses and great hair lol). I so enjoyed the experience...from the foot/leg scrub to this miraculous cuticle cream that was put on my fingers and toes. Terrible mani/pedi. Worst ever. The polish job was very uneven and could have been done just as well by a 9 year old (I'm not exaggerating). There are no proper pedicure stations (no built in baths, just buckets, and the stand for your feet is jury rigged on in such a way that you can't really put your full weight of your legs down on it) which makes the whole experience borderline stressful. Worst of all = there are no dryers!!! NO DRYERS?! Yes, no dryers. Not even little fans. Nothing. While the women who work there are friendly and accommodating, their loveliness does not make up for the complete lack of any kind of a professional manicure or pedicure. If I could give this "spa" a rating of zero, I would. I bought a spa mani-pedi package on Lifebooker and have never experienced a stranger nail salon experience in my life. First off, there were no pedicure chairs. You sit on a plywood platform with a pillow under your butt while they bring you a home foot-soaker. I kid you not, the exact same thing I have at home. This immediately made me wonder about how sanitary it could be. They fill it with water in another room and bring it to you, mine was filled with scalding hot water. As soon as I put my foot in, I immediately removed it and it was a beautiful bright pink color. The woman doing my pedicure was the owner of the spa and was suuuuuper rough on my feet. None of the instruments were taken out of a sanitizer and the sanitizing solution looked cloudy....not so comforting. My expectations of a "spa pedicure" obviously were a little high, because all they did was give you a 5 minute foot massage and then polish your toes. I don't see how this is worth the $65 they normally charge for this service. In my experience, spa pedicures include a hot stone massage, some kind of exfoliant, a parafin treatment...ANYTHING! That was not part of this package. The manicure was also pretty brutal on my nail beds, she didn't use any cuticle oil and made all of my fingers really sore after the manicure. The best part of all of this is this "spa" has NO NAIL DRYERS! Brilliant! They made me sit there for half an hour until my nails were dry (they still weren't by the time I left, but I had to leave as I had been there over 2 hours). I purchased 2 mani-pedis as a package from lifebooker and frankly I won't even go back to that disgusting fungus factory to redeem the second service. Disgraceful. read more

BEWARE -I bought a $60 deal on lifebooker for a spa mani/pedi this is not by any stretch of the word a spa mani-pedi. Save $30 and take part in mani/pedi at regular nail place and you'll be happier. You more or less sit on a bench and they fill one of those at home foot spa things and bring it over. Did not feel sanitary at all.... No massage, no spa treatments, limited nail colors. I should have left the second I saw their pedicure stations or lack thereof. Very weird experience, hard to believe they are trying to pass this off as a spa pedicure especially in NYC when average nail place provides much more for much less. read more

I had a generally good experience here, so 4 stars. The decor is white and silver--bright and seems clean. The owner is Colombian and very friendly. The 3 other women working there were also friendly and helpful. The owner did my treatments. I felt like she really took her time--much more relaxing than the average nail spa. However, it's not of the fancy spa variety--stations for hairstyling, hair washing, manicures, small room in back for waxing, and just 2 seats for pedicures, no massage chairs, portable tubs for soaking feet. They had some OPI colors, and others were a brand I didn't recognize. They offer you tea/coffee/water. The price was absolutely right--19 for mani pedi through life booker (plus tax and tip). There were a few other clients there while I was there, but it didn't seem rushed. There have been some poor reviews in past about cleanliness--I saw them scrub the foot tub before I used it. The manicure tools were soaking in blue liquid, I'm not sure if they also use an autoclave. Overall it was good, I will probably go back. read more

I've been to a slew of "waxists" in the city through Lifebooker and I have been going here religiously for Brazilians since I found the place. I go with or without a deal. I only allow Delmy to wax me because I'm neurotic and because she does an amazing job. She doesn't get wax drippings all over your body and on sensitive areas down there where it shouldn't be... I was getting tired of half of New York examining my lady bits because I didn't like the results or the methods that were used. I recommend her tremendously. read more
