We just moved to Fletcher Hills from La Mesa and were looking for an auto repair shop closer to our new home. La Mesa Auto and Tire is less than one mile away, so I called and made an appointment to change my oil and check a blinking tire pressure sensor. Five hours later, Carlos called and said, "Your car is ready to go, but it needs a cabin air filter and engine air filter, plus your tires are down to the nitty gritty, so it would be better to buy new tires, and we can check the pressure sensor then". My wife dropped me off to pick up the car, but after she left, they informed me that the car was still on the rack and not ready. I waited 20 more minutes and retrieved my car. #1 - Both my air filters had been replaced two days before, so obviously they did not check them, but just assumed they should be replaced. #2 - My tires are not down to the "nitty gritty," and I do not need tires at this time. Bottom line - I paid $98 for an oil change that took about five hours. read more

Carlos and his team were amazing. I had two tires leaking air and his team found nails and did the patch work. When I continued to have a problem, I brought it back in and they found another nail causing an issue that couldn't be fixed, and gave me advice on what to do that was best for me and the car, that involved going to a different business. They were incredibly kind, thoughtful and thorough (i wish I had gotten the name of the tire techs). I took my car to La Mesa Auto and Tire after a friend's referral, but I won't be making that mistake again. I brought it in because I was getting a "Battery Discharge Warning" on my dash. I told them the battery had already been tested elsewhere and was fine, but they insisted their equipment was better -- and sold me a new battery that didn't fix the warning or the problem. They also tried to upsell me on new tires and an alignment, claiming uneven tire wear and telling me I couldn't get road hazard coverage because of my low-profile tires. I later went to Discount Tire, where they confirmed I didn't need an alignment and could get full coverage -- proving La Mesa Auto and Tire was either dishonest or incompetent. The office is also plastered with Trump stickers, which I found unprofessional and offensive. Even if you overlook the politics, the service isn't honest. I won't be back, and I wouldn't recommend them to anyone. read more

This is tough to do. My family has gone here for many many years. But I have to do it. Brought my car in to have the struts replaced. Some other stuff was found with the suspension and the total price came in at approximately $1600. They "fixed it". Within 2 months the suspension was handling the same and making the same noises from the front passenger side. So I took it back in. They said they installed a bad part and replaced it. About 2 weeks passed the second time before it started making noises again. Arranged with Tony to bring it in again. This time they did not have the part in stock and told me it would be 430pm before they had it delivered. I have to get to work so I arranged for them to order the replacement part and have it put on the following week. Tony assured me it would only be a few hours since the part would be on hand and the diagnostic completed. I did a night drop for the car so it would be there when they opened. They open at 730am. When I called at 1030am they said they weren't sure what was wrong with it. Tony said he would get back to me in a couple hours when he had the chance to drive it. At 1230 I called back. Tony said the mechanics had all gone to lunch and he was waiting on them to get back to drive it. Again they had the car for a full day the week before and had already done the diagnostic. Finally they claimed that the car was "fixed" and ready for pick up when Tony called me at 430pm (9 hours after they opened). Within 30 minutes of driving the car the same noises started again. I ultimately decided to sell the vehicle instead of continuing to dump money into never ending repairs. I worked in the car business for 4 years. I have used this business for repairs my whole life. My family has probably put at least one of Matt and Carlos kids through a couple semesters of college with the business we have given them over the years. I am not a moocher looking for a handout. I just don't want others to make the same mistake I did. Four attempts to fix the same problem without success is lousy by any measurement. They do warranty their work. But the quality of they work has dropped noticeably in the past 3 years. I spent a huge amount of time waiting on repairs over the past 6 months. And each time the "repair" they did failed to actually fix the problem. I'm sorry Carlos and Tony, but I think we are through. I have been very patient. My 2011 Subaru started overheating on way over Coronado Bridge. Immediately stopped when i exited the bridge and called AAA for a tow to see Tony and Carlos at very end of day on Monday. Tony and his team, on a short Holiday week, busted their butts to get the problem (cracked radiator) identified, new parts installed, repaired and thoroughly tested. I went there because they supposedly offer a 10% Military discount but Carlos forgot to add it at the time of payment. I asked him to apply it and he just said it was too late and there was nothing he could do. My bill was over $900. I mistakenly went there a second time. I made Carlos add the military discount this time and he gave me a $13 discount on $750. That comes out to 1.7% discount. They were also supposed to do my timing belt, plugs, filters, etc, but they just sent me home smogged. Carlos should be ashamed of himself. This used to be a good repair shop, while Matt still owned it. Now, however, under Carlos, it is not a place to take your vehicles. Carlos is abrasive, and thinks he is doing you a favor by having you car repaired there. Recently, I asked for several services to my car, but he only did two of them. When I asked he said simply, "We didn't do them," with no explanation. This is the third time they have decided not to do a requested service. Apparently business is so good that they can afford to disdain, and disrespect customers. Well, if I want a bigot to practice his repressed racism on me, there are plenty of other shops to go to. We were taking all four of our cars to him, but now must find a shop that understands that the customer comes first, not the front-desk help. Things were great before the owner sold out, now it's just another over-priced, rude and dysfunctional shop. Buyer beware. read more

Since first hearing of LMATC from a mechanic friend, I've had Matt, Carlos and the fellas work on cars and trucks belonging to: Me (5) My Wife (3) My Stepson (1) My Father-in-Law (1) No mechanic is cheap, but LMATC is reasonably priced in the middle of normal, especially for routine work such as oil changes and tire service. More important, the fellas do an outstanding job of diagnostics ahead of repair, to save time and money and to ensure complete and satisfactory service. How good are they? I've called from the road, held my phone up next to an audible source of concern, and had Carlos accurately diagnose the problem and prescribe a solution that worked. Dude's a wizard. Matt and Carlos are businessmen, but they're not money-grubbers. I've called with problems, more than once, and had them say, "Just drop by and we'll take a look," and when I did, they made a quick fix at no charge. I originally came in for a smog certification. That was easily taken care of. No problem. Prior to coming here, I was informed from another mechanic shop that the lug nuts on my tires (that lock) have been rusted. They were unable to do the tire rotation for me at the time and didn't even want to deal with that issue. I knew it was something I needed to take care of ASAP. I explained to Carlos my situation and he offered to help me. He was able to remove the lug nuts without stripping or breaking the bolt. Afterwards he gave me a chance to go shop around for some new lug nuts and put them on for me. Huge huge huge props! Went to a gas station air machine to add air and was going to go to Discount Tires to have it fixed for free. The air machine I went to took my money and didn't produce any air. Went to look for another one. I was stressing out as it was 7:45 AM and I had to have my wife in Chula Vista by 8:30 and my son back to El Cajon for school by 9:00. I happened upon this place by accident, pulled in, explained my situation and asked if they could put some air and I would get it fixed later as I was in a hurry. The mechanic I spoke to (didn't catch his name) said let me look at. He looked down and said I could fix it in 5 minutes. I asked how much and he said $20. I said okay. Called and talked to Carlos Friday last week regarding an issue that came up that I had happened to notice while driving. I don't have anything bad to say about this place...THEY'RE EXCELLENT! I wasn't too familiar with the auto shops in this part of town, so while at Kragen, the manager recommended this place. I was having issues with my air intake and blah blah blah...took it in, they worked on my car for a couple of hours (and only charged me for an hour's worth to check out the problem). The owner told of the place (Matt is his name I think), explained what the problem was, and told me it should be covered under warranty! FREAKIN' AWESOME! If you think about it, he didn't have to tell me that, and if he didn't I would never have known. The work would have cost me six to seven hundred dollars, but because of they're honesty I took it into my dealership and got the work done for free. I think most of you have the same fear as me when going to an auto shop; and that is you will get ripped off because you don't know the difference between a headlight and a head gasket.
