We have a older suburban that has been sitting idle for years. Occasionally we round start it and drive it down the street, but now we need to use it. The check engine light was on so we couldn't smog it. Took it up our mechanic in Santee and they found a problem with the catalytic converter. They said one side was bad and recommended Hanson's to get it fixed. I called Hanson's and was able to get an appointment for the next day. While the car was there they found another problem that was an inexpensive fix. They were able to install the cat and make the other fix the same day. Overall I am very impressed with the work, service, and advice/direction I received from Hanson's. read more

1 Star - Would Not Recommend I went to Ed Hanson's Muffler for a simple resonator/muffler delete, basic exhaust work. This shop used to have a solid reputation, which is the only reason I chose it. Unfortunately, that no longer seems to be the case. I arrived when they opened and clearly explained that I did not want to be stuck there all day. I don't live close by, and I needed to pick up my daughter from school later. I specifically told them I was completely fine dropping the car off and coming back once it was finished if the job was going to take a while. They laughed and said that wouldn't be necessary, and that they'd be in trouble if a job like this took that long, implying it would be done quickly. Instead, the work dragged on for most of the day. I was repeatedly told it was "almost done," which kept me waiting there instead of leaving. Had they been honest upfront, I would have left and returned later without any issue. During this time, the employee working on the car moved extremely slowly, frequently stopping to socialize, smoke, eat, and take extended breaks. There was no sense of urgency and no respect for my time. Because of this, I nearly ended up late picking up my daughter from school, which was exactly what I was trying to avoid by offering to drop the car off in the first place. To make matters worse, the final result was disappointing. The piping looks sloppy and unprofessional, like basic budget muffler work, yet the price was unreasonably high for the quality delivered. Ed Hanson's may have been a respectable shop at one point, but based on my experience and many others now a days, that standard is no longer there. Ed Hanson's Muffler Service - Getting the muffler installed - Auto Repair Near Me - Spring Valley, California

Overcharged big time. Went in for a possible gasket replacement at the exhaust manifold outlet flange after being quoted about $195 give or take, depending on the actual gasket price. Another shop had quoted $160, but they were farther away. Turned out to be a crack at the flange itself. Was told they would need to disconnect the exhaust system, which is the exact same thing they would do for the gasket replacement, and weld the crack shut. Was told that they may have to remove the exhaust manifold in order to weld it, which would make for a bigger job, and so the estimate would be $350. No gasket required unless they removed the manifold, but potentially much more labor, so I accepted the estimate. The mechanic got the whole thing done in an hour, which means no manifold removal or parts. Still charged me $339 even though it should have been about the same as the original estimate of $195. Then asked if I would be using a credit card to pay, which I did because of the upcharge, only to find out afterward that they charged me $10 for credit card processing without telling me of the fee beforehand. They will never get another dime of my money. While they did it quickly as I told them I needed to get to work, they got greedy. Even though I told them I had rescheduled my work appointment, so there was time, they saw an opportunity to take advantage and were unwilling to give up the extra money even though it proved to be unearned. $339/hr for labor is a total ripoff. Only two of their 5 bays were active, so others who have the opportunity to price around are clearly doing so. I suggest you do the same. read more

I went today to get what I knew was a simple repair and the results were amazing. I have a 1970 C10. I was weary about just going to anyone because I didn't want a low quality job. I knew that the wield on the exhaust coming from the headers was broken. My truck was loud and just embarrassing because it was so loud. These guys always do a good job. I brought my 07 Tahoe here with major issues including a host of exhaust leaks at the head (common on the 5.3) and a "Tijuana backyard special" exhaust complete with dual 1.5" exhausts (why???) and some 4 cylinder mufflers choking everything up. JOB: I wanted everything as close to stock as possible, so we opted for factory single 3" tube back to a big muffler + resonator. The tech drove me around in his truck to demonstrate the sound beforehand, and I liked it, but I'm glad I added the resonator as well. It sounds GREAT with just a little more tone than stock. Just enough to remind you that you're driving a big ol' v8, but not enough to make you sound like a kid in front of your peers COST: I went into this job knowing it was going to SUCK to pay for. All said and done it cost me over $1,700 to get the exhaust right, and that's with the tech and service writer both helping me out with parts and labor costs. All things considered I think this job was worth it. The peace of mind of knowing that it's done correctly and I'll never have to think about it again is great. So if you are in need of some muffler service and advise this is the place in the South Bay. I needed a new muffler for the new motor on my 1971 VW camper bus and had called several other places, and they were all too busy to answer the phone, or get back to me after i left a message. I called here and they said come on down and let's see what we can do for you. It's about a 13 minute trip from Bonita to Spring Valley, and I was there. The guys got to work on getting the bus fitted for a muffler. I had put in a new motor and wow, it was just too loud with the straight pipe exhaust that came with it. It was not the motor that i had wanted but it was the motor that i got and I just made due with it. Anyways, to make a long story short the master technicians at Ed Hanson Muffler Service did the job and found me a great muffler. Ed Hanson has been around for over 50 years. That alone is amazing. That says a lot about their work. Top quality stuff here. The workmanship is some of the best I've seen, my HUGE issue here is the the way they quote jobs. I've brought a few cars here and EVERY TIME I been specific with what I want. I give them the Vehicle Make/Model/Year/Engine and ask them for a quote. They last vehicle I brought in, they quoted me $1700 for a full 3" dual exhaust system. I figured based on other shops (and this one) that quote might end up creeping up to $2,000. Well after I get my car towed there from my home, 25min away, they take a look and tell me it's going to be $2700 for a full exhaust. What changed? Well the guy says "well it's a little more expensive for a 3" dual exhaust" Yeah, not shit. I mentioned that on the phone that I wanted a 3" full exhaust. "It's a tight bend around the rear end so we can't bend that, we will need to get a u-pipe and cut and weld it". No shit, you guys been doing this for 50+ years, my car is just as old as your shop so I know you've done 3" exhaust on these cars before. Why wouldn't you know this? I HATE it when a shop quoted you one low price to get you in, and then jacks up the price once it's there. Ed's has NEVER stuck to their initial quote. I been quoted $950 before (final bill was $1368), been quoted $1200 (final bill $1690) and this last one quoted $1700 (final bill $2664). I would rather a shop tell me $2200-$2800 and then charge me $2600 instead of telling me $1400 and then charging me $2,000. $2,000 is cheaper BUT just give me an accurate quote and stick to it or below it. Again, their quality is good, but for a shop being around for over 50 years, you would think they could quote a job accurately by now and stay within that quote. read more

I recently got myself a fun "weekend" car, or as my friends call it, my "midlife crisis" car. Honestly true, it's a small two-seater with a stick shift that I can play around with, just like I did as a kid. I wanted to modify the exhaust system to get a bit more sound and Ed Hanson Muffler's came very well recommend and I can see why now. I called them and they were quick and attentive over the phone regarding what I wanted to do to my car. Got scheduled quickly and I came by a day later. I purchased and brought my own muffler for them to install, which they did perfectly. The only issue is that it droned a bit too much for my tastes. This was of course my fault, since I went a bit too aggressive with my muffler choice and I honestly knew it even before it was installed. But sometimes you need to experience it to convince yourself otherwise. But they worked with me and I came to my senses and got a more appropriate muffler for my car, and it sounds great now! My only issue was I wasn't happy with my muffler tip choices due to the limited space under my car and how I didn't want the tips to stick too far out. I was frankly just going to go with the easiest option, but Joe the technician working on my car went out of his way to find an option that worked. He took the extra time & effort and came up with a solution that worked out great, he modified a tip to fit perfectly and made my car look so much better than I ever expected, very happy with their service and workmanship. I've been to quite a few muffler shops in the past, but Ed Hanson stands out above all of them. The best service experience I've ever had, but at the same time offering reasonable and fair prices. We asked for a miracle and they made it possible. The work was to redesign a muffler for an RV generator that was long discontinued. Ryan did the research and came up with a possible solution. The welder made it possible. We now have an operational generator with no exhaust in the cabin (which is a good thing). Used these guys years ago for some welding work on my Jeep. Did a great job but i forgot to give them a review. Years later our catalytic converter got stolen and they immediately popped into my head. Long story short, out of like 10 shops including the dealer, Ed Hanson was the only one even able to find a compatible cat. Everyone else had the same story. "Indefinitely back ordered" - wonderful. After getting the car to them, them getting the part in a couple days, they had us back on the road the day after they got the part. And they had the lowest price by like 700$.
