We have crashed here many many times over the years going to & from Santa Fe/Taos. When we first started staying here the owner had just started fixing the place up & boy has he done an excellent job. Veteran family owned & operated, he took his time & did it right. The last time we were there hubby was admiring the concrete work he did outside our regular room. He stamped the concrete & it looks so cool. Most impressive, is the old Route 66 Sign out front. Looks amazing as he has restored it completely. The rooms have all been completely renovated & are super clean & comfy. We have a special room we stay in, we always stay in the same king room. We have stayed here so much that when we call he must know our phone number bc he always knows who we are. We tell him we are coming & he always says "see you when you get here!" We never even have to use a credit card to hold our room he just says "y'all can pay when you get here." One night late he even left the key for us :) A wonderful place to stay on Route 66 that has so much nostalgia with incredible friendly service. The King bed in our room is super comfy. This motel is so cool! We were blessed to get the room on the end so we only had neighbors on one side (that we never heard a peep out of by the way). This motel is dripping with all the Route 66 throwback vibe but with thankfully some modern conveniences such as the microwave and refrigerator that we threw our leftover bbq goodies in to enjoy later. The bed was comfortable and there was a futon/couch to sit on. The rates were reasonable and the room was very clean. It was nice that the upgrades included a completely renovated bathroom with porcelain tub and ceramic tile and updated sink and flooring. The staff were very accomodating and laid back. read more

I saw the reviews on Yelp.. So we decided to stay here and we weren't disappointed. I called directly and received a voicemail. I was called back and we made the reservation. Check in was quick. You get the Old School Room Key. The parking lot was clean. The room was clean. The beds were comfortable. The shower was newer I imagine as the white tile was in great shape. Everything was in good shape. Definitely would stay here again. Yelpers are spot on here, once again. Immaculately clean and right on Route 66. Arguably the most comfortable bed on the entire cross country drive! Friendly personal service. 4 stars for all of the above - certainly not luxurious but priced accordingly! La Mesa is Definitely a throwback to a simpler time, in a good way. We are traveling in mid winter and it was extremely cold, so pack warm gear to sleep in as the heat is not reliable. Just a minor point. My dad always asks to see the room before we decide to take it. La Roma did not want to show my dad and was kind of disrespectful to him... When we went down the road and found this place, the clerk happily showed him two rooms very quickly. The first room had just been remodeled. The second room hadn't yet. My parents took the first and I took the second. I didn't mind at all, due to how nice and respectful the clerk was. He even turned the sign on after a rainstorm, to check and see if it worked (The O and another letter starts flashing if it was wet but it was perfectly fine). As the sun was setting, I got some great pictures! This was one of my favorite motels of the entire Tulsa Okalhoma to Santa Monica California R66 trip! Got the last room of the night on a holiday weekend. The room was immaculate upon entry. The room has its own air conditioning unit. It has a small refrigerator, microwave, and Keurig coffee maker with K-cups. The towels are folded in designs. The king sized bed is very comfortable. WiFi is free. Very friendly front desk. The gentleman that answered the phone when we booked for a late check in on 6/12 was very friendly and helpful. However the room was extremely musty smelling and got so much worse when we ran the air conditioner. It was very overwhelming and made it hard to sleep. The bed was comfortable and it was an easy stop on our route, but because of the smell I could never stay there again. The whole room smelled like mildew. read more

I stayed here on a Wednesday night while traveling from out of state. While enroute, I checked the area of Santa Rosa for motels. This one showed excellent reviews from prior visitors. I called and spoke to Mike the proprietor, and he was very helpful. He reserved a room for me and knew that I would be arriving a little later than typical. I arrived at 10:30 PM. I got checked in quickly and found a parking spot directly in front of my room which I really appreciate. The room was very neat and clean. The bed was comfortable and I got a good night's sleep. I left early in the morning. I will definitely recommend this for travelers seeking a fair priced motel that is very nicely kept. I enjoyed my stay, and will return again. read more

We stayed here on our Texclipse road trip and were happy with the owner/managers attention to detail. He fixed the TV that someone had apparently messed with, brought us ice, and was friendly. In other words, everything a good manager should do with a smile on his face-that was him. I would give 5 stars but I have some concerns as to the sheets on our bed. As a former hotel maid I have never put wrinkled sheets on a bed. Now I get that they probably don't have a "mangler" (industrial size sheet ironing machine) like where I worked, but did they take the sheets out of the dryer and toss them unfolded into a bin before eventually putting them on the bed? The only time I've seen sheets look like that is when they have been slept in and the bed remade. Pillowcase. too, were wrinkly. It all smelled clean I think-hard to say when you've just taken a shower. So, it could easily have been 5 star. I just am puzzled at the sheet thing. Coffee good. Keurigs bad. Wasteful. Too bad they bought those for all the rooms. read more

This motel is adorable. Great, friendly service. Clean rooms. Little coffee machine in each room. One negative is they don't have any baby cribs, but if that was a big deal, we could have stayed at one of the nearby hotel chains. But we didn't, on both ways of our trip, we chose to stay here! I agree with many others who have reviewed this motel. It is an older/classic Route 66 motel that has been kept up, refurbished. You can tell there is pride of ownership, the rooms/bathrooms are very clean, the room smelled good- no stale cigarette odors here! You get a small fridge, microwave, coffee maker, flat screen TV with Direct TV & free WiFi, what else could you possibly want from a great place to sleep? And the bargain price $54.40 with tax. I'm going to be returning to Santa Rosa several times to visit a MD & I will definitely be booking a room here. If you are the kind of person who wants all the bells & whistles of a pool, spa, gym, & breakfast then you need to stay elsewhere. Let me just say that overall we were very pleased with this motel and would probably return. Since we were making it further on our road trip than originally expected, I was googling hotels/prices along our route. La Mesa had a great rating, but no prices listed, so I switched to yelp to get an idea. The reviews were great and listed reasonable prices so I called the hotel to verify the price and check on vacancies. There was no answer so I left a message. Several hours later, we arrived in Santa Rosa and tried to call again, still got the voice mail. We pulled in and saw a sign on the door instructing people to call a number for service. Taking this to mean it is a family run business and maybe they were cleaning rooms, I called the number. I was surprised and left unsure when the owner told me he was in Albuquerque at the moment and would call his daughter to come. This seemed... strange. He called back and said she was 2 minutes out, okay great. He told me all the rooms are non smoking, rooms with one queen bed are $49.50 ($55.40 with tax) and a king bed is $10 more. This sounded quite reasonable and while on the phone I told him another person had pulled up. That person ended up being a lost customer as he felt that was no way to run a business and left. I can't disagree with that assessment but after talking to the daughter for a while, I'm fairly certain that this is not the norm for this business. I think the owners had business to take care of and don't normally leave their business unattended. Also, their daughter came to man the office at 4pm and I suppose that is a more common time for most check ins. This still left me feeling like the whole thing was odd, especially since this particular street had 8 other motels on it. Until I come again to really see if this is the norm or not, that takes away a star for me. I don't think anyone should have to work that hard to get service, so at this point, it's a 4 star experience. Upon entering the room, it was larger than I was expecting for the price! This place is downright cheap, there was plenty of room to move around the bed and table, the only tight space was the bathroom, which is not unusual for a motel. The bed was very comfortable and the mattress was firm and pillows were cushy, which was exactly what we needed after being cooped up in the car all day. I was also really impressed with the fridge size! The freezer section was large enough for us to put our ice packs in and some of our frozen food from the coolers, that was great! Most motel fridges are smaller. The room was SO clean!! The showers were literally sparkling!! I couldn't believe how clean it was! It's also convenient to getting back on the road- at this point 4.9 stars! Unfortunately, the ice machine is in the laundry room so we had to be let in to get ice for our coolers. This wasn't a huge inconvenience since we were able to get in before the daughter left again, but it made me feel like I was putting them out. There was also no soda machine, so you have to get in your vehicle to get to a restaurant or gas station. Not a huge deal, it's just that most places have vending machines for those of us wanting to avoid the car for a few hours. I did appreciate that there were menus for all the nearby restaurants in the bedside table drawer- that was cool! There were no phones in the room, so when I emerged from a nap after 10pm and realized I needed more coffee packets, I went to the office to see it was closed. The sign was still on the door, but with it nearing 11pm, I felt too guilty to call for service, the thought made me really uncomfortable. Water temperature and water pressure is really important to me for any motel room. This one had extremely good water pressure which was a huge plus. Unfortunately I couldn't get it warm after messing with it for about 7 minutes. This annoyed me to no end as I hate having cold showers. I took a lukewarm shower and right as I was finishing it, the water got hot. This was a relief to know that if I return, it WILL eventually get hot. I'm guessing there is just a longer recovery time since they have 17 rooms, but it was close to midnight so I wonder just how long it takes. This motel is a good value and definitely worth a return visit. Now that I have tried it once, I would make a reservation for next year and see if it's more convenient that way. Since there wasn't someone easily available for the normal questions or needs (getting ice without help, soda machine, getting more coffee without feeling like a bother) I would say it was a 4.25 star experience which is actually far beyond the experience of many motels and I think a solid place. We don't generally need that much extra help, but some people want a lot of service and should know that's a little different with a family run place. I will return and update the rating at that time, but still feel comfortable recommending this as a great price for a great room! read more

Wow this place is incredible. The reviews are 100% accurate, this is an affordable and straight forward hidden gem. I called a couple hours before driving through Santa Rosa to check and see if there was still vacancy, and Mike told me he'd reserve a room for me without requiring me to give my card over the phone or anything. Spotless bathrooms. How the maid makes them this clean, I have no clue, but I applaud them. The chrome on the faucets had not one spot on them. I couldn't have done a better job myself. Neat freak talking here. The blankets are actually clean as well. They smell straight from the laundry. Even the middle soft blanket smelled clean. Many hotels I've been in, simply leave them on through guests, and I find hairs. Nope not here!!! Sigh. Can I live here? Can I borrow the cleaning crew? The one thing I would like to see, is so trivial that I hate to mention it, but vintage themed rooms, comforters, and furniture in the rooms. It would blow this place out of the water! I would completely understand if the owners prefer a sparse atmosphere to keep the rooms tidy and open, but the interior décor could better reflect the wonderful exterior light experience. Also, the big tall smokers outputs are hidden in the color scheme, when they could easily be vintage reproduction. But hey! No butts here! This parking lot is wide, clean and an incredible, spankin' new. It looks like Lightning McQueen himself paved it. read more

Everyone has already said it. Immaculately clean - my room looked like everyone else's pictures so I guess all the rooms are nice, not just the room I got. The owners have an eye for detail, and want to express it right down to the soft, clean, neatly folded towels, perfectly arranged shower curtain with wash cloth and soap neatly placed on the side of the tub. The air conditioner didn't smell musty, as they often do even in $100 a night hotels. Unlike the "super" national franchise motels with a number in their name and that "will keep a light on for you", there is actually enough water pressure here to take a shower and rinse your hair in less than 45 minutes. If I could find a place like this everywhere I travel, I would never stay in a franchise again. read more

You'll see their huge neon sign on the highway right across from a big purple water tank. Single story rooms open to the gravel lot. The 1-bed queen room we got was clean with a comfortable bed, a small table and an upholstered chair. The room had a fridge, microwave and coffee maker and plenty of hot water. When we first called we got their answering machine which had their mobile number, so we called that and we were able to reach them at that number. Pretty good for $47.50. read more
