Is this 5 star Mexican cuisine? No. Is this a 5 star Mexican restaurant in Pontiac Illinois? Yes. It was just myself tonight so I ordered their gold margarita, and although it was 1800, Grand Marnier, and a sour mix, the sour mix looked to be mostly lime juice making for a decent drink. The salsa and chips both seemed to be made in house with solid flavor for both. I had the pollo ranchero made extra spicy. Although it wasn't "packed" with flavor or slice, it was again solid overall. Honestly as I was just traveling through this town I really expected the quality and service to be only passable, but this place surpassed my expectations delivering a good meal with solid drinks and service, earning 5 stars. read more

Went here on a Sunday afternoon and there were very people in the place so service was pretty attentive. Yes for Pontiac, Il this was a good experience. If it were in downtown Chicago, different story. Different locales, different expectations. The chips are good and plentiful and no charge unlike a lot of places these days. The salsa was pretty good too. I had chicken enchilada suiza which was fine and my son had the taco plate with steak tacos and thought they were good as well. The atmosphere is typical for a Mexican restaurant, bight and cheery and they have a full bar. If in the area again I'd go back which I think is always the test of a restaurant. Will you go back again and yes I would. Also prices are reasonable, not cheap but in line with what you'd expect at a place like this. read more

This is the worst Mexican restaurant I have ever been to. The chips and salsa were quite boring. How can a Mexican place make bad salsa? It took forever to get waited on. I ordered a Carne Asada Chimichanga, and I swear to you the "beef" that was in this was actually chunks of cat food. I took one bite of it and spit it out, then walked out. This was my second time here, because I usually give a place two chances. It was awful last time as well. Never again will I stop here. Found La Mex while looking for a place to stop while traveling, and had a good dinner. Chips are really good. Salsa is good, but not as thick as at some places. We had the Quesadilla Supreme with chicken and it was very good...and huge! Lots of shredded chicken that was very tender, peppers and onions, and lots of white queso cheese (not yellow or canned.). I asked for and extra side of pico de gallo, and that made it even better. All of the food we saw delivered to other tables looked appetizing, and with generous portions. La Mex was worth the stop, and made for a nice stop off of the highway. If we weren't traveling we would have tried the margaritas! (It isn't right at the interchange, so you do have to go a mile or two in to town, but worth is, is you want something other than fast food. read more

Although they close at 9pm, they said that they would stay open for us as we arrived past 8:30pm. La Mex was a breath of fresh air in a town with a lot of sandwiches and American food. Unfortunately, the food was not the greatest, but we still appreciated the change of pace. I had the shrimp fajitas that did not come out sizzling as I expected. The portion size was impressive, but the flavors were lacking. My wife ordered the chicken tostado combo and was not impressed. Im only giving two stars because the atmosphere is nice and clean. I've been there three separate times in a span of about two years. Same thing all three times. I might give it one more chance because I'm bad at learning my lesson. Chicken is always dryer than the Sahara desert, and the tortillas can barely stay wrapped because they appear to be uncooked or not at all. I ate here on a Saturday evening. Ordered the fajita combination. The dinner was served sizzling on a metal skillet. It was delicious. Only negative was there was only 3 shrimp. Lots of tasty steak and chicken. For the price, I expected more shrimp. Service was outstanding. Restaurant was very clean. The Diet Coke tasted a like it had a little touch syrup. Went there with family and we all agreed that the food was really bland and had little flavor. The service was sub-par as well; you really had to ask for things because the waiter sure wasn't offering any service. Drinks were warm with very little ice to cool them off. Yellow cheese sauce (like what comes out of a can) on nachos in an authentic Mexican restaurant is pretty bad; most use queso. Taco bell serves better Mexican! i've been to la mex several times while visiting my parents. the food is good, service is prompt/friendly, margaritas are strong, prices are moderate. i usually get the chicken enchiladas with the spiciest sauce and a margarita on the rocks. chips and salsa are some of best i've had! the food and decor are comparable to many casual mexican restaurants in chicago. i think la mex is a great addition to pontiac and hope that the restaurant will continue on for years to come! read more

We came in on a Sunday for dinner which we were looking for. The place was pretty empty, it was us and two other tables. You would expect service to be very prompt, which it was the total opposite. We got two wet burritos. terrible. I didn't even touch mine once I saw the yellow cheese with chunks of peppers it looked like cheese wiz.. I was going to scrape the cheese off and put the white cheese dip over the burrito but our server never came over to see if everything was ok. We didn't even get the sour cream which was supposed to be served with the burrito which is a small complaint I suppose. I told them I don't eat yellow cheese and wasn't eating it, they did ask if I wanted another one but of course at that point I did not. They brought me a box for my untouched burrito I said the server can take the box back because I wasn't gonna take it. They gave us our bill with my untouched burrito I told him I wasn't paying for something I did not eat. He tried arguing with me I said I work in the service industry I know how it works. This is the first time I tried La Mex and I have to tell you it is amazing. Not only the food was great but the service was exceptional. I just can't say in words how good it was. If you are in Pontiac I would highly recommend coming to La Mex. I also forgot to say I had the Flautas I think it's called not too sure. But there is nothing I didn't like about this place. The only thing I didn't like was at your table they have tortilla chips and salsa. The reason I didn't like it was because the chips are so addicting and so good. So you just eat those before you get your food, then you have to bring home leftovers. But if you try this I think you'd wanna bring home leftovers. read more
