Me and a friend frequent this place an I couldn't be happier. The ice cream is pretty good quality with the mango sorbet being a stand out. The portion sizes are huge as well so be warned about how much you can eat. I've only tried the savory stuff once's but it's not bad, definitely a nice pairing for the sweet ice cream. There are so many flavors to choose from -- it's hard to pick -- flavors like tres leches, cajeta, chocolate abuelita -- to aguas frescas, paletas, mangonadas...I did not know that they also offer elotes and other snacks too. I selected a scoop of piñon (pinenut) on a cone -- it was smooth, sweet and creamy and studded with nuts -- very cooling! My companions had an agua fresca (fresa) and a tres leches scoop on a cone. I got the Rice ice cream at the Highwood festival. I wanted to try something authentic & this was the only authentic flavor they had. I enjoyed it. It was served sundae style & I was surprised as I expected a stick of ice cream. It's a very large serving for $7. Not my favorite ice cream flavor but it was good to try something new & I did like the rice flavor. I would describe it as sweet rice and similar to vanilla flavor. I'm a huge fan of elote and paletas but it's not easy to find and I don't want to drive down to Chicago just to find some good snacks. Enter La Michoacana Bella! I walked in and was so excited to see all my favorites! I ordered the hot Cheeto elote and it was fire. I also tried the pinwheel chips and they were fresh and crispy. They had a huge selection of both cream and fruit paletas and I wanted to try them all! The paletas are 3.00 each and I grabbed three (this time). I live by another La Michoacana and stop by a couple times a month. I'm in the neighborhood, so I stoped by this location. First red flag, this location was dead, whereas the location by me is always busy. I looked past that. The person helping me was sweet, made my Dubai chocolate strawberries. Second red flag, as I'm looking around there's a price for everything but the Dubai chocolate strawberries. Should have asked her the price when I noticed price on everything else but the one thing I was getting. At checkout she said $21 dollars and I thought I misheard her so asked her to say it again and said $21 dollars. As she repeats it again, she charged my card really fast and I told her you have to put a price on this item. I should have said I'm not paying that, refund my card but I gave it a shot. Feedback to location: The strawberries are whole, not cut or fresh and probably not organic, barely any pistachio, chocolate hardening together which caused it to be impossible to eat. The strawberries should have been cut, different type of chocolate that doesn't harden and more pistachio. It was very hard to eat. For $21 dollars it should have been phenomenal, but it wasn't. Great staff, tons of menu options. I enjoy their Mangonada and when I said I love the mango pieces on top, she gave me several extra! The mango ice cream tasted very fresh and flavorful. When you see a place have 61 reviews and still be a solid 5 Star, it piques your interest. As many have stated, this place looks suspect at best from the outside with a check cashing/wire transfer sign and an ancient looking ice cream cone sculpture. However, it is worth taking the trip inside because what greets you is ice cream royalty! I'm from Ohio, land of Graeter's which even Oprah Winfrey deemed as some of the best ice cream in the country. Dare I say Graeter's isn't fit to share a cone with this delicacy. I tried the "De la Rosa" (which is peanut butter and marzipan flavored) and mint chocolate chip. I swear this tastes like they fresh churn it in the back on the hour. I am both happy and sad I live so far from this place so I can't have it all the time. The mint was soooo minty, with real chocolate chips inside. The De La Rosa cannot be described other than melt in your mouth goodness. At the end of my cone the paper stuck to it and I ended up breaking the cone trying to pull it off and I'm not ashamed to say I licked my hand as not to waste any of this deliciousness. I met Rosie, who owns and operates the store with her husband and children, and she was super gracious. We are big fans of the La Michoacana ice cream shops throughout Chicagoland and this one didn't disappoint at all. There were a ton of ice cream and popsicle flavors to choose from, including so many of the homemade flavors that are harder to find. We very happily made our choices and sat out on the patio to watch the cars go by on a perfect summer day. I love little independent places and this one is all that! Drop your notion of 31 flavor's or DQ because this is not like the franchises. When you walk in the first thing your going to see is a money station (check cashing, tax returns, etc) shared in the same place. As you walk up to the counter you will be greeted by a friendly person that will take your order. I get the cookies and cream bar and my daughter gets a scoop of the cookies and cream. It's not like other cookies and cream and I can't tell you why but it is! There are a number of awesome and unique flavor's that you will not get at DQ and I recommend you try them. All in all its a great little hole in the wall for a great snack on a summers day (or night). I highly recommend it and plan to sneak out with my daughter tonight to get a scoop. If I could give 10 stars for this place I totally would. My dear friend introduced me to their paletas a couple months ago and it has turned into an obsession. The paletas, ice cream and yogurt are fresh and delicious. They even have my favorite flavor, mamey sapote, which you don't see very often. It is so nice to see the employees working so hard to make fresh and delicious products. I had grown so used to store bought ice creams, that this store was like a revelation!! Love this quirky little ice cream shop! Have been a number of times. Our first experience with the ice cream from here was when my cousin came for dinner and brought a bag of different flavors of Paletas (think Mexican Popsicles) for dessert. We loved them, especially the coconut. These aren't icy like a traditional popsicle but more like an ice cream bar married a popsicle. Since then we have visited the shop three times. Besides the paletas they also have traditional ice cream. Best flavor is the Mexican caramel. It is masterful. On one of our visits the shop was pretty much closed but three different customers walked up at the same time and though they had already pretty much cleaned up, Rosie (the owner) graciously opened the door and welcomed us in. She even dished up Elote (Mexican corn on the cob) for one customer which can be kind of messy. Back to the paletas, if you buy 10 you get one free. My favorites are (in no particular order) cookies and cream, coconut, rice pudding, coffee, pistachio and pineapple with chilies. read more

The pine nut flavor was pink and carried a vague suggestion of fruit (cherry?) but was otherwise chock full of actual pine nuts and tasted really good.
