Ok..... I'm super full. So I'm going to try to get through this review the best way I can. If there were more Stars.... they would be getting all of them. Coming back to Columbus, La Michoacana was on my foodie list. Inside the market, there is a food counter that serves some of the best Mexican food. It's prepared fresh to order. The meat is cooked fresh which is so amazing. More order as always is the Chicken Burrito. Inside the burrito comes with Spanish rice, avocado, beans, sour cream, tomatoes, lettuce and meat. The burrito is NUGE! It is so tasty. I can't eat the entire thing. So I cut it in half. My husband gets the Steak burrito. We trade half of our burritos for variety. The Steak is just as amazing as the Chicken. My daughter got Asada Tacos and my niece got Pollo tacos. As you can see in the pics the food looks amazing and tastes just as amazing as they look. Whether you're simply looking for packaged goods such as rice and beans, or need some fresh produce, you can find it here! In the back, there is a butcher counter (carnicería) with a large variety of pork and beef cuts (e.g., diezmillo, falda, pecho). Or, if you're in the mood for something sweet, the selection of decedent cakes and tres leches will surely satisfy any craving. While there are many great grocery options here, the restaurant in the back serves deliciously outstanding and authentic cuisine that is fresh, flavorful, and brimming with goodness! They have it all: burritos, tacos, tortas, soups, seafood - all made to order and served in generously portions! A small Mexican market. Clean and organized, but stuff is packed in here. Narrow aisles, lots of stuff. A bit of produce, a big butcher area in back. Not much household stuff, and those aisles are barely wider than me. And no Zote soap flakes, which is what I came for. They had bars, and I guess you could whittle or grate flakes off... But, good selection of dry goods, some cold stuff, decent prices. Very small dining area, but I didn't check that out. Handy off the highway. I will be back eventually. read more

If you are looking for authentic Mexican groceries and ingredients this is the place. Make sure to try the Menudo which they make on the weekends such a savory flavor! There's a wide variety of tacos and tortillas as well as meats. They have fresh ingredients, fruits and veggies and some canned goods. They sell treats and so much more. The prices are reasonable. I always buy my vanilla extract there. It has the best flavor with actual vanilla extract not all artificial at a great price. They have a little restaurant but it's more of a diner feel. You do have to sit at the counter. The staff are friendly, kind and generous. They really know their products. Everything is clearly marked. I highly recommend this store. Just be aware that the parking lot has many pot holes but a good amount of parking spots. Again a great grocery. read more

Oh good god. I might not be able to do justice to how amazing the restaurant inside La Michoacana #4 is. Located near the Billiard Club on Rte. 161, this little gem is tucked away inside a plaza and deserves your patronage immediately. This is the best Mexican I've had since we first went to the original La Michoacana on Morse Rd. over a year ago. This store is small, but it has all of the essentials - from the Virgin when you walk in (we crossed ourselves as we left of course, [guilty] Catholics that we are!), to every kind of merchandise you can imagine crammed into four of five small isles - everything from La Preferida canned and boxed products to a great selection of holy candles, to toys, candy, and fresh made panaderias (sweet breads). We, however, made a beeline for the restaurant in the back of the store, so that we could grab some delicious foods before heading back to the Billiard Club. We ordered two each of pork tamales and chorizo tacos. This is simple, delicious fare that will make you fall off your barstool (eat in - it's fun!) when it hits your tastebuds. The tamales were as good as the boy's mom makes, and that's hard to beat. I'd never had pork tamales, but they were excellent - the mazo in particular was very flavorful. The tacos were just out of control. Each consisted of two baby corn tortilas, softened on the griddle, with chorizo, cilantro, lime, and roasted jalapeno pepper... so simple, so delicious, and so filling. I am not at all doing this food justice with my inadequate descriptions, but check out my pictures, because they'll make you drool. Our friends came by and tried some, and ended up ordering food for themselves as well. I love this place because it's the real deal. It is pretty much the epitome of what makes me happiest in this lil ole world - just people being people, engaging their culture, doing their thing. There's no putting on, it's all completely humble, and it's not about getting ahead - it's about living within one's culture instead of trying to obliterate it in favor of assimilation. America would be a truly more diverse and interesting place if more people rejected the white middle class ideal we hold so dear. La Michoacana is an excellent example of a place that does so, Oh, and... it's beyond delicious. Finally/PS - just as we were checking out with a few more items as we left the store, one of the workers wheeled a cooler overflowing with huge Coronas and ice right next to us. This might be one of my new favorite places to eat. La Michoacana 4 isn't in the best neighborhood. There's not much to say of its decor, the wait staff, or the valet. If you're looking for that, go look somewhere else. This place is dominated by THE FOOD. Holy f, the food is good. It reminds me of taquerias in larger cities, but even then, La Michoacana would put those to shame. The restaurant was moderately crowded when I went and there was a longish wait for my food, but I don't care--I'll be back. The chorizo tacos are amazing: Soft corn tortillas heaped full of chorizo, tons of cilantro, roasted jalapeños and onions, and lime to top it all off. I tried a steak sope, mostly because I didn't know what it was, and was pleasantly surprised. (If you don't know, it's a thick, fried, bowl-like shell with refried beans, meat, and toppings.) This is the real deal--100% authentic food. If you're uncomfortable with that or really like Taco Bell, you'll probably be disappointed here. Oh yeah, there's a grocery part, too. It's the bit that gets in the way of your trying to make it to the delicious restaurant in the back. read more

Wow. It's actually hard to put into words how good this place is! My fingers keep typing up descriptions that just don't do the food justice. First, a note: I was very wary about trying this place. It's in a strip mall near my work where I see cop cars parked frequently and I know that at least on the other end of the shopping plaza they had a problem with rodents. Those things combined didn't fill me with a lot of confidence. But after reading Melanie B's review and then exchanging a few comments with her I was convinced I had to try it and I'm so glad that I did! When I walked in I was surprised by how clean and well lit the store was. There was a huge selection of groceries for such a small space and in particular the deli was fantastic. As I've mentioned before I've worked in a deli and I can spot high quality meat when I see it. This place is tops! But still, none of that compares to the food. I got one chorizo taco and one steak taco, and since my brother-in-law sang all of my praises for the steak already I'll stick to the sausage. OH. MY. GOSH. Chorizo is an iffy thing. I've had it bad, I've had it gristly, I've had it so garliced that it wasn't worth eating, and I wasn't convinced it was as good as the hype I heard on Food Network. And then today, after my first bite of my taco, I became chorizo's biggest fan. It was good. It was so good I think I'm going to go back tomorrow and get another one. It was flavorful and seasoned perfectly and fall apart with absolutely zero gristle delicious. It was served on a freshly grilled corn tortilla with white onions and cilantro, with a lime and grilled green onions on the side, and every single thing on my plate was fantastic. I can't remember the last time I licked my finger to try and pick up all the little meat bits left behind on a dish, but I did it happily at La Michocana #4. Oh, and apart from the food, here's the best part. As Dennis said, we got five tacos and two Mexican Cokes for 9.95! Cheap and delicious. It's impossible to beat that! read more

I've always liked the Mexican-style tacos (with onion, cilantro and soft corn tortillas) better than the American style (with cheese, lettuce and flour tortillas), so I'm deeply ashamed to admit that when I saw Taco Bell's new "cantina-style" tacos, I was excited. They were pretty good, as far as Taco Bell goes... mushy and not a lot of flavor, but decent. But now that I know you can get the real thing in Columbus, I can't possibly go back to Taco Bell. La Michoacana obviously caters to the Hispanic population, with menus in Spanish only, so clearly this is authentic stuff. This is the kind of food I daydream about. They were out of my meat of choice (carnitas), so I got steak instead, and it was melt-in-your-mouth, can't-stuff-it-in-fast-enough good. Three double-corn tortillas, stuffed with succulent morsels of steak, topped with fresh cilantro and tender, crunchy white onions. My plate also had a roasted jalapeno pepper, half a lime and some green onions, all exceptional. Even the limes tasted sweeter than what I'm used to. My sister-in-law and I ate five tacos and drank two bottles of Coke between us, and the total was $9.95. Two bottles of Mexican Coke would cost half that alone in a standard grocery store. Oh, did I mention this is also a full-service Mexican grocery store? I will come back here repeatedly. I'm already excited about all the different menu options they have. read more

Been there 3 times was only able to eat there once. Seating is very limited. The third time we went there was told there would be a 45 minute wait for 2 tortas. For those that don't know a torta is a sandwich that's it, so a 45 minute wait for a sandwich is ridiculous. Too bad the one time we did eat there it was good. read more

The point of authentic Mexican food is to put you into a coma and make you feel like a beached whale the next day, right? Well, La Michoacana is as good as that gets in Cbus that's not in a truck in a parking lot on the shady side of town. La Michocana is great because its a grocery store (lots of beans, fresh meat, and fresh produce and baked goods) PLUS a yummy food stand. It's not in a great neighborhood, BUT it is in a safe strip mall. Everyone I saw looked nice and safe. Please see Bryant's M. reviews for tricks and tips for a great dining experience. I'll give you the low down on the food I tried real quick. 1) Huge carne asada burrito, but it was $7 and not as flavorful as Chipotle, but had this amazing cheese in it. 2) Chorizo taco $2.50, was dry as the dessert, not recommended. 3) carnitas taco $2.50, recommended for sure, delicious, juicy, flavorful pork. 4) pollo milaneze torta $6, AWESOME! Totally delicious full of mayonnaise and fried chicken breast with fresh tomato and lettuce on the perfectly griddled torta bread. Amazing and worth the trip. They were out of a lot of things they advertised, like gorditas, barbacoa, tamales. But, they did make all the food fresh while we waited. Trek to the end of the nearly abandoned strip mall and you will find La Michoacana. When you walk in, you are hit with a cascade of colors of all the hispanic grocery items, from rice and beans to the piñatas hanging from the ceiling. At the end of the store is the grill, the menu hanging above which is MASSIVE (not in the number of items, but the sheer size of it!) All their items are listed, from Torta's, Tacos, Burritos to Sopas. The clientele was strictly hispanic (always a good sign), and the woman working the register spoke very little english. In broken Spanish, I managed to order a Chorizo Taco and Pollo Torta. The Taco was GREAT, the Torta I've had better. She overcharged me for the drink ($2.50 for a bottle) and I chose not to try to complain in Spanish. Overall my lunch was just under $12. Will likely return. read more

The staff speak little english so it helpful to speak it yourself or bring a spanich speaking vato with you :) You can also pick up groceries (or a cute Mexican) while you're there. The only reason I didn't give this place 5 stars was because there were no prices anywhere on the 'menu' (read: big hanging board, and hand-written notes all over the place) and once we all ordered our food and the bill came, it was not itemized. I love this place! Mmmmmmmmm it is sooo good. :) Still haven't found anywhere that compares to the mexican food available when I lived in San Diego, but this place is a great substitute. Everything I have tried is delicious! Everyone I have brought there agrees. :) I learned in San Diego that hole in the wall places are usually hidden gems. This rings true here as well. :) Only cons? Horchata was great and torta was good. I like the horchata because I'm pretty sure they make it homemade and not from a mix because it's ladled out of a big pot and has some texture to it. Let's be clear: this is a hole in the wall. And for a hole in the wall, it's really as good as it gets! I really wanted to try somewhere new, but I didn't want anything fancy shmancy. I was feeling very hole-in-the-wallish. So, we went to La Michoacana #4 for some authentic Mexican food. And the other reviewers are right: this isn't in a great neighborhood, the store is teeny-tiny, and the restaurant in the back is even smaller. If any of this turns you off, please don't go. As for me, I love this kind of place. It was as authentic as you can get on this side of the border - especially in Ohio. Coming here is all about the experience. We walked through the store to the restaurant in the back, and we were met by a server who was incredibly patient, sweet, and helpful. She knew we didn't have a clue what we were doing, but she never once made us feel stupid for not understanding the process of eating at La Michoacana. And in case you're wondering, "what is the process for ordering and eating at La Michoacana?", here's the deal: 1. Go to the back of the store. 2. The menu is kinda all over the place. Just keep looking for the handwritten signs everywhere. I recommend the tacos, the burrito, or the torta. Be sure to get something with carnitas (pork). 3. Place your order. Don't worry, they speak enough English to understand most things, but it won't hurt to have a bit of Spanish in your back pocket. 4. Go get a drink from the coolers in the store. They have Mexican Coke and other Mexican sodas - as well as beer. The bottle opener is mounted on the wall next to the coolers. 5. Find a stool to sit on. Nope, there are no tables. 6. Patiently wait and watch them freshly cook your food. 7. Eat the mouth-watering food. 8. Go get some flan from the little fridge near the register. Seriously, it's super-duper delish! 9. Sit and laugh with your friends. 10. Go to the register to pay. They do accept cards, but you can't add a tip to the receipt. Be sure to carry a little cash for the tip. This was just the experience I was looking for, and the food was amazing! If you're adventurous, then get yourself to La Michoacana now! read more

Great place to get authentic and quality ingredients for real Mexican cooking, and at good prices. Good selection of Mex cheeses and high quality meats cut authentically; I picked up some nice thin skirt steak and beef coasely ground for tacos. Good produce too. I was the only gringa in the store at the time and found the staff friendly and helpful, especially the guy behind the meat counter. After reading previous reviews I will have to slightly disagree with it being great. Maybe because im spoiled because of the fact that being born and raised in Chicago ive had way better mexican food. But in all honesty its ok. I had the steak tacos and the meat was a little dry. My Favorite place for Mexican food in Columbus. The Fried pork Tacos are to die for. Chicken tacos are good too. have tried a couplea other dishes, which were good too, but end up coming to the tacos all the time. If you like spicy food try the tacos with the fire grilled Jalpenos that they serve. Once you go to this place I don't think you are going elsewhere. read more

5 stars for authentic great tasting food. I live in apartments nearby so the location is very convenient. We have chosen this restaurant numerous times rather than eating fast food. The atmosphere is a family grocery store. The cook to order is in the back. After placing your order you can sit and watch your food being cooked. The grill is open in front of the countertop so you can see how your food is made. I ordered a burrito. I can only eat half at a time! It was hot fresh and tasty.
