I had been recommended la mixteca by many people but the drive out of town always felt daunting, so I was very excited when the stars aligned and I ended up nearby . The venue is decorated nicely with wooden carved tables and very creative murals. I tried the Torta al pastor which was a very big and generous portion with all the required toppings , and although it was good, the Pork meat marinade and cooking style did not blow me away. We were in search for a good Mexican place and used my favorite app, Yelp, to find it. Yelp, in my opinion, is the best place to find great restaurants and businesses, as well as, our next favorite spot. We were not disappointed! Our first trip was a couple of weeks ago and our recent trip (this week) confirmed that this is indeed our go to Mexican place going forward. The food was excellent and everything tasted delicious. I shared a Cabeza Torta with my wife on both trips. Excellent on both trips. The meat was perfectly seasoned and the portion was large and great overall value. I also ordered sope my first trip and a chicken fajita my second trip. The sope was okay and fajitas were kind of dry, but seasoned flavorfully. I would not order that next time and will most likely try something else. The menu is fairly big with two pages of variety. The atmosphere is pretty and it is fairly large restaurant with authentic looking furniture and decorations, e.g., paintings, chairs, and dishes. The dishes and cups were very pretty. Seems handmade and authenticity made. We loved the serving plates as well. As far as service, both trips were excellent. We received attentive service and our drinks were never empty. If you're in the area, try them out. You will not be disappointed. Reading some of the bad reviews, if you think they are too pricey, go to Taco Bell. We went there a couple years ago and loved it. But it is not close to home, so we did not go again until a couple months ago, and now we've gone back 4 times, we like it so much. It has doubled (or more) its size, expanded, therefore gotten colorful and uniquely decorated tables and chairs and colorful paintings. Also beautiful pottery settings. The food is great and I continually get their tasty sopas, my husband their huge fajitas, and our granddaughter their generous servings of fajita quesadillas. Service is wonderful! It's been REALLY hard for us to find a decent or good authentic taco place around here. We just wanted to find one where they weren't afraid to use salt or spice. We came here during lunch and hubby got one of their daily lunch specials, an enchilada and tamale with rice and beans. I had to try their traditional tacos, asada, pastor and lengua. We also got the street corn which was really tasty snd packed with flavor. I enjoyed my tacos more than any other place I've been. I asked for some salsa verde and personally I do not think it was homemade, definitely from a jar. My server was so nice and attentive, his colleagues were also helpful in taking plates ways when we finished. Tiki Taco, you have some solid competition for the best, most authentic Mexican food in the area! This little place tucked next door to Momo is like stepping into abuelita's kitchen. The menu is small and everything is freshly prepared and perfectly seasoned and cooked. I had cabeza and lengua tacos, and the tongue was so tender and juicy, like it had been braised all day. I had a pork sope and it was a dream: crisp, light, delicately sweet and piled high with seasoned meat, onions, cilantro, and cotija. I want five more! I had read about the not-to-be-missed agua fresca, so asked what the agua fresca of the day was and the waitress said, "Horchata." I must have looked confused because she said, "Watermelon." Now we're talking! I got a big mug of it and it was super-refreshing, especially after I took a bite of the grilled pepper. It's always so hot but so delicious I can't resist. Others in my party got chicken and steak tacos and they were all pleased. The red sauce is HOT but has an amazing flavor so give it a taste. Service was a bit spotty, but it was busy at lunchtime with only one waitress and a manager, both of whom were very friendly, and we were the only gringos in the place, which to me speaks to the authenticity of the food. It was a bit warm inside, as the AC seemed to have a hard time competing with the centralized open grill, but it's the South in summer, so... Shoulda' known.. On a Thursday night when there was only two other customers in the entire restaurant, we should have just kindly turned around buuut.. we bravely ventured in. The other customers looked like they were enjoying their meals so we were feeling a little better, I ordered a torta with steak and my wife ordered the carne asada plate, WTF, no really, WTFnF? The steak in my sandwich was so dry I could have shaved with it as was the carne asada, my wife agreed to spicy over my objections but the entire plate was covered in this melt your face off spice and the meat was dryer than a popcorn fart! There was nothing that I could find redeeming in this meal, I'm sure others will have a differing opinion but this is one place that I can't possibly see myself going to again or ever recommending. It is delicious and most everything has some kick to it so if you don't like things spicy, be sure to request that to your server. My husband ordered the steak tacos and said they were the best he's ever had. I ordered a veggie quesadilla (veggies are not on the menu so I almost didn't get anything like that but the server told me they had lots of veggies). The quesadilla was filled with an amazing variety of veggies and when they accidentally put jalapeños in mine, she remade it quickly and apologized for the mistake. I was born and raised in Los Angeles, CA. I struggle with traditional/authentic cuisine when it comes to Mexican food as I am half Mexican. I dislike places like La Hacienda and Jalapeños. It is simply too Americanized for my taste. I visited La Mixteca today for the first time and I will be becoming a regular. I like that they have a daily special everyday of something like mole or mojarra. They switch up their aguas frescas everyday. They can generally make most foods if you ask. The menu doesn't encompass all their potential. I was told by the server to simply ask and they can usually make it. I had tacos de asada and papas. On the weekends they make posole and menudo. I did not provide a five star due to the menu being so small and not having some form of a note that says just ask server for special requests or something along the lines to know there's more.
