The prices are higher than your typical bakery, at least three times higher. Despite the prices being higher, they do not deliver. The cake topper broke that was on my cake for my milestone birthday. This was not a good experience. The cake did not look as desired for my photos. The cake was not moist but dry. It had a great deal of flavor of the vanilla, but was not the tastiest cake that I have tried to Charlotte so far. 1 Star -- The Ice Cream Isn't the Only Thing Getting Robbed…read more Van Leeuwen on Commonwealth Ave has apparently found a brilliant new business model: charge customers $20 for ice cream, then charge them another $5 for the privilege of sitting in the parking lot long enough to actually eat it. I was there for 20 minutes. Twenty. Apparently, that extra five minutes is where the parking vultures swoop in and automatically charge you for entering and exiting the lot. So let me get this straight: I buy overpriced ice cream, sit down for a few minutes to enjoy it, and suddenly I'm being charged nearly $5 for parking? Absolutely ridiculous. The entire plaza gives off the impression that the parking system is designed to catch customers rather than accommodate them. If the goal is to make people feel like they're being nickel-and-dimed the second they pull in, congratulations--you nailed it. I've never seen a more ridiculous way to turn a simple trip for ice cream into a $25+ experience nobody asked for. Keep the $5. Clearly, you need it more than I do. I will absolutely not be returning to this location. There are plenty of places to get ice cream without feeling like I accidentally drove into a toll booth. Van Leeuwen: $20 ice cream. $5 parking. $0 chance I'm coming back.
