1 Star -- The Ice Cream Isn't the Only Thing Getting Robbed Van Leeuwen on Commonwealth Ave has apparently found a brilliant new business model: charge customers $20 for ice cream, then charge them another $5 for the privilege of sitting in the parking lot long enough to actually eat it. I was there for 20 minutes. Twenty. Apparently, that extra five minutes is where the parking vultures swoop in and automatically charge you for entering and exiting the lot. So let me get this straight: I buy overpriced ice cream, sit down for a few minutes to enjoy it, and suddenly I'm being charged nearly $5 for parking? Absolutely ridiculous. The entire plaza gives off the impression that the parking system is designed to catch customers rather than accommodate them. If the goal is to make people feel like they're being nickel-and-dimed the second they pull in, congratulations--you nailed it. I've never seen a more ridiculous way to turn a simple trip for ice cream into a $25+ experience nobody asked for. Keep the $5. Clearly, you need it more than I do. I truly enjoyed my experience in the shop but it was mostly because of Isaac, the employee helping me. As soon as I walked in he had the BEST customer service i've had in a while. He was so kind, patient and went above and beyond to help me find what I was looking for. He had great energy about him that made me want to stay even longer. I've been a fan of this brand for years (thanks, Walmart pints), so it was a treat to finally visit their shop in the Commonwealth area. The space is small, clean, and welcoming. Even on a rainy day, it felt like the perfect cozy spot to sneak in a sweet treat. The team let us sample a few flavors before ordering, which made the experience light and fun. I went with the espresso fudge brownie. It was creamy with a great balance of chocolate, espresso crunch, and little brownie pieces in every bite. My husband ordered a double scoop with pistachio and the espresso fudge brownie. Both flavors were rich, smooth, and memorable. Needless to say but we'll definitely be back. Mmmm! We stopped in over the grand opening weekend. I tried the special Batchmaker cookie sundae swapping the ice cream to sour cherry and cream. Gah, the tartness and creamy was amazing!! My husband had the brown sugar cookie dough and it was fantastic too! Not cheap but very delicious. I do understand the price as the ingredients are high quality and the options are very unique. I tried the vegan strawberry shortcake and it was very good. Typically vegan ice cream can be very sweet as they add more sugar during the process to get a similar ice cream flavor to traditional ice cream, but this one did not taste overly sweet... It gave off vibes of a sorbet. Also got the praline pecan one and it was very good! I would get that again. I appreciate that the staff was patient and allowed us to try out as many flavors as we wanted to so that we picked one we liked. I would go here again as a treat but not regularly. Visited during the Grand Opening. The buzz around this place has been hopping on IG. New York based, this shop is known for creativity! There was a line, but moved pretty quickly. $1 scoops were being offered from opening til 1pm. The young lady helping me was very sweet and kind. No rush deciding and let me try whatever I wanted. I ended up getting the sundae special partnered with Batchmaker. They supplied homemade oatmeal cream pies to go with their Earl Grey ice cream with hot fudge and whipped cream. I swapped out the ice cream (that flavor is good) for the Honeycomb for a sweeter, caramel like flavor. It was a win! I can see myself adding this place in my rotation if I'm in the area. They have a great mix of dairy and non-dairy, and spunky and more classic flavors. I settled on 2 scoops - 1 of the affogato and 1 peanut butter cookie dough brownie. They were both delicious, and there were several more flavors I'll be eager to try. If you're comparing Van leeuwen to other ice cream shops, I'd say their vibe is similar to Jeni's (more upscale, chain, unique flavors, good dairy free options), but their portion sizes are more generous like Two Scoops (my first love and always go-to for ice cream in Plaza Midwood). Despite it being the first day while they're serving a crowd rushing in for $1 scoops, their service was extremely quick. I've had their ice cream many times while in New York City and Philadelphia, and it's one of my favorite stops. They serve French-style ice cream, which is known for being rich and creamy. The most delicious ice cream I have ever eaten in my life. I ordered the Milk Chocolate White Chocolate Swirl. That flavor is not served in scoops, but as a pint of ice cream. Once I tasted it, I was ecstatic I had more than a scoop or two. So creamy. Flavorful. The white chocolate chunks are delicious. I'm secretly hoping Van Leeuwen ships because I live in South Florida!
