Smallcakes, y'all got me!! First of all, shoutout to y'all for being OPEN on Easter Sunday--already appreciated! But what really did it for me was the customer service. The guy working greeted us with a full "Happy Easter, good afternoon!" and that warm welcome? Yeah... it worked! I came in for pupcakes and walked out with a whole four-pack for me & the dog. The pupcakes are sold in a mini 4 pack. Speaking of--thank you for having pupcakes in stock! Mission accomplished! I thought I was going to have to go to SouthPark area. Glad I was able to get the job done locally. And honestly, between the friendly energy and the deal, I couldn't resist upgrading to the 4 pack. Disclaimer: long review. It could be longer but I'm working really hard to capture what I think will be helpful feedback in a concise manner. Celebrating bday 52!! I ordered 2 dozen cupcakes online. FYI the online ordering is through grubhub. I had to call to update my order and the person who helped me was very friendly but she was not aware online orders were through grubhub so it took a bit to find my order. But once she did it was smooth sailing. When you order a dozen online you can only select one of any flavor so I encourage you to call to place your order. Either way you pay ahead of time. I ordered a few days ahead but my order was ready as promised. I've been to several Smallcakes but never to this location. I intentionally chose this one because it's black owned. The owner was there for pickup. I was greeted promptly upon entering the store. Very cute layout (see my pics). There are a few tables in case you want to enjoy your sweet goodness there. I felt like royalty on my bday I was treated so well. Got my pic taken for the wall. There's so much more than cupcakes. Brownies, cannolis, ice cream, milkshakes, cake jars, macaroons, pup cupcakes etc. I sampled quite a bit and I'm not exaggerating when I say EVERYTHING I tried was delicious. But baby, when I tell you the ice cream was out of this world.....so creamy and the flavors tasted exactly like the flavor it was. Biscotti, Oreo brownie cheesecake?!?! Sooo good. Out of all the cupcake flavors my favorite was the blueberry lemon. Melt in your mouth moist. The flavors exploded in my mouth. The cannolis were the best I've ever had. I ended up purchasing way more than the cupcakes. Apparently there are special treats coming for Valentine's Day. I can't wait. You should check them out too! read more

As my husband and young child entered the store the door closer fell on my husband's head bringing him to his knees. Thankfully it fell on my husband and not our child because it was very heavy and painful when it hit my husband's head. The individual working that day called the manager to let them know but the manager did not seem to care at all. The manager did not speak to my husband, offer to cover the cost of the items they purchased, take his number to follow up and see if he was ok....nothing. We will not be returning, and I caution everyone that walks in there to be careful as you enter. read more

The carrot cake cupcake was delicious though a warning that it is heavy on the cinnamon for those who might not like it as much as I do. The banana pudding was horrendous- fake banana flavor like a Laffy Taffy almost. Person working was friendly and just stared until I announced what I wanted. If your looking for a sweet treat of the cake variety, look no further than Smallcakes ! This place has some seriously delicious cupcakes ! They also have ice cream and macaroon, that's their entire menu. You won't find doughnuts , sandwiches or anything else, so make sure your fed before coming and looking only for sugar. The staff provides great service, very friendly and knowledgeable , patient with small children and their indecisive parents ;) The seating area has a giant chalk wall with a chalk bucket, some tv on the wall (at low volume not blaring) and a radio overhead that provides background noise (NOT BLARING, nice touch). Appreciate the clean seating facility to enjoy our treats on a rainy day and keep the kids entertained for some much needed time out of the house. The parking is typical for the area, a small parking lot in a back area. It shares with a subway and Starbucks, so you may not get front row but their is plenty of space. Occasionally there's a line blocking the entrance for the Starbucks drive through (morning, lunch rush) but people move and it's easy to get through, it's just part of the area if your local you know. I wouldn't be deterred by any of it, easy experience. On a Sunday afternoon the place was nice and slow, got to enjoy the place to ourselves while ordering , a few other people came and went with their order, but a line never formed. It's times like this I find myself appreciative of one of the many hidden gems of ballantyne. There's no coffee, so you might want to visit the Starbucks before or after to pair nicely with your cupcake. If you haven't been, I would definitely put it on the list of places to visit, even if just once. The prices are typical ballantyne prices, $4 a cupcake at the time of writing, which isn't egregious but normal for the area, reasonable. read more

(2/8/21) I didn't know that there was a location in Ballantyne! I drove over this afternoon to be amazed at the variety of cupcakes for sale. They also have ice cream but that's going to be another trip. I got a six pack of cupcakes in a specially designed box with places for each cupcake so they don't fall over. I got a carrot cake, a wedding cake, a chocoholic, a chocolate cupcake with pink buttercream frosting, a vanilla cupcake with pink buttercream frosting and a lemon drop. All of the cake bases were moist and all were delicious! I had hoped to eat one a day and have them last the week. But the reality was that I ate all six for breakfast... Came here on a nice hot summer day I have been to a location around University which is awesome and figured I would try this location since it's close to home. On entering there was an await no was present. The sales personnel were playing or something. I able to try samples of the ice cream before you buy it I quite enjoyed the banana pudding and felt that it was very yummy I highly recommend. I was able to get cupcakes for coworkers young lady box them together did not ask me to box of separately. Upon them opening the box look like somebody had put their finger all over the strawberry cupcake. I'm not sure if the sales associated is on accident when she was trying to put them in a box but she still could've informed me that she did this and giving me that decision to get another cupcake as presentation was of the importance. Ended up waiting as two people came in one to pick up an order and there orders wasn't accurate or missing items. Maybe it was the day and every wine has good and bad days. OMG AMAZE-CAKES!!! Ok, so I've never been one to like cupcakes 'so moist' that they almost seem like they are not fully baked (ugh).....I like moist, but FLUFFY too - and these cupcakes are SPOT ON!! Also???? I usually throw away half the frosting on a lot of cupcakes (it's either too greasy, too dense, or too sweet); again, they've got these SPOT ON! Frosting is fluffy, delish, just the right sweetness & exactly the right amount of frosting for a single cupcake! What's more, these tasty devils are SO FRESH! I'll warn you - they are soooooooo good it's hard to eat just one!! So many flavors & ALL are freeeeeekin awesome with awesome-frosting! Mmmmm what a freakin tasty cupcake! I did not go into the store so I can't speak to the service but this was a very delish cupcake. I was worried they would be too sweet based on some other reviews but I did not find them too sweet. I rarely eat sugar so I'm pretty sensitive to sweets when I eat them and I thought it was great! My friend and I split a red velvet and a lemon one. Red Velvet is one of my favs but the lemon one had a filling inside that was SO good. I really wanted to give this place a high rating because of all the amazing cupcake creations and ice cream flavors. We were ecstatic about trying this place out, but the experience we ended up having quickly dampened the mood. Everything started out great. We had just arrived before a large crowd and had the wonderful dilemma of having too many beautiful options to choose from. We decided to try a Smallcake Smash, which is a creation that splits a cupcake in half and holds 2 scoops of ice cream in between the 2 halves. We were immediately enticed by the Holy Cannoli cupcake (vanilla cake with chocolate chips, topped with a chocolate chip cream cheese frosting and a filled cannoli). It was absolutely delicious, especially the buttery creaminess of the ice cream, but I would not agree that $10 is justifiable. Furthermore, evidently gift cards are specific to the location that they were purchased from. This would not have been a problem if we were informed at the time of purchase of our gift card. Instead, the cashier had no idea why our gift card was not showing any balance. She asked for the name of the staff member who had loaded our gift card (though I don't see how this helps us). The staff could not figure out what to do, only to repeat that the gift card was not working. Then, my husband happened to ask if it mattered that our gift card was purchased at another location. She said that must be it. She still did not sound certain but since it was a possibility, she decided that she could not longer help us with the issue. She did not try to remedy the issue. I don't understand why the gift cards have to be location specific despite the fact that they have multiple locations (unlike gift cards for other chain stores), but again, we would not have had any problems with this if we were told upfront at the time of gift card purchase. It certainly spoiled things for us by the time we sat down with our dessert. read more

So I just moved to Charlotte (Ballantyne) and was hoping to to find a cupcake place that would be equal my favorite award winning place back home. I tried a few local places and Smallcakes is the absolute winner! Their cake feels heavy to the touch but is actually light and airy and moist. The frosting is delicious, not too greasy, and the correct ratio. They have tons of flavors but my most favorite is the wedding cake. It is an almond flavor and is just wonderful. My family visited Smallcakes Cupcakery while visiting Charlotte. This location was a cute little storefront, with limited seating but enough for several larger groups. We went in the early evening, right before closing, and were helped almost immediately. I got a cone with New York Cheesecake and Red Velvet ice cream, and was not disappointed. This area has need a place that has desserts other than going to a restaurant for it. So I was pleased when I saw them open. I went in for cupcakes but was sold to get ice cream and cupcakes. The banana pudding ice cream is a most try it's delicious, it taste just like banana pudding. Took my little one in for a treat and she went with ice cream. She picked Lily's Strawberry and I went with Red Velvet. The ice cream was very creamy and delicious. They offer an adorable and creative Smallcake Smash. It's a whole cupcake cut in half, ice cream in between and then stuffed in a cup. Their cupcakes are huge and it's two scoops of ice cream. The staff are ver knowledgeable & friendly. They make sure your greeted as you walk-in. Everything is super clean, sanitary wipes are on each table for your convenience & they offer a sanitation station near the door. Now the ice cream is so creamy, fresh, delicious. Okay, so this place literally opened less than a month ago and I've already had cupcakes three times (don't judge LOL). This place is awesome! The cake is soooo good. I love that they have standard cupcake flavors, but they also have some fun/seasonal flavors. I also love that they use a true buttercream frosting for their cupcakes - none of this cream cheese frosting or whipped cream garbage (those just aren't my taste and they seem to be everywhere). Received a half dozen as an anniversary surprise, delivered and to our dissapointment found the cupcakes taste like grocery store made. Cakes were dry and frosting tasted like sugared Crisco. Two of them had little Chocolate chip cookies on top which were soggy and bland. Decoration only. Chocolate muffins from Costco or Harris teeter would be a much better option.
