About once a month, my family would cross the border and we would all go out to eat, but my favorites were the food stands in the mercado and I would get tacos and elote to start, and f I finished it all, I would get a paleta. There was always something special about the paleta, because they made it like a popsicle, but there would be actual fruit, my favorites were the strawberry and the watermelon. I had become so picky eating popsicles, because those are the ones that I would only eat. Fast forward 30+years, I love in Baltimore and in true El Paso nature, I would scoff at the notion of good Mexican food, in a place like Baltimore. But then here come Cocina Luchadores, which gave me the best experience to classic Mexican food without having to get a plane ticket. Well, the same person that opened Cocina Luchadores, also runs Hecho in Baltimore. This place specializes in paletas, but they also have homemade tamals, bunuelos and coffee. They also have Chamoyadas whehere they crush their paletas add some fresh fruit, douse it with tajin and add a straw covered in tamarind and dusted with tajin. This took me back to my childhood in so many ways. Even though this is a mile away from Cocina, you can still go to Cocina, get some tacos and Jarritos, then walk that food off and get yourself a paleta at Hecho. The storefront is unassuming, so you may actually miss it, but look inside and you'll see what looks like an ice cream shop, the only difference is that it is decorated with Mexican artwork by a local artist. My take, summer is coming and after a day at nearby Patterson Park, you're gonna want these sweet treats.
