Stopped in midday on a Saturday to grab some takeout. The place was crowded. I think I was the only person in the place not speaking Spanish. I ordered Chicharronnes with mofongo and tostones. I devoured half of it on the 40 minute ride home. This was the best mofongo I've had since I first discovered it in San Juan 25 years ago. So many PR restaurants tend to overcook their pork, but these chicharrones were crispy on the outside, yet tender, juicy and succulent. I haven't been able to stop thinking about them. I'm constantly looking for a reason to go to Vineland now. lol Seriously, trust the locals. I can't wait to go back. read more

I had the chuletas en salsa. Pork chops in a red sauce. Sides were yellow rice with pigeon peas and fried plantains. As good a meal as I have had just about anywhere. The sauce was perfect, slightly sweet. Their house made hot sauce is one of the best hot sauces I have ever had and my whole meal was $12.16. The service was fast and friendly. Had to take a business trip today three hours away from NYC and on my route I found this cute little spot that caught my attention in the moment I saw a Puerto Rican flag. I went with my family and we placed an order of rice and beans, octopus salad, empanada de mariscos (seafood), a cuban sandwich and soup de salchichon. The empanada was tasty but way too oily. The soup had hardly any noodles at all, it had no flavor (basically boiled water with a packet or two of sazon) and barely any salchichon, more like bits of ham. The cuban was ok, nothing crazy but for sure the best thing we ordered. The rice and beans were ok as well. Didn't care for the choice of rice much, a bit overcooked. But the octopus salad was a big disappointment. Portion was incredibly small for $20. It was a bit too soft but definitely edible, it was the choice of dressing that was horrible. WAY too garlicky and it was drenched in oil. It was given to me a bit warmer then you would expect for a "cold" salad. Definitely wouldn't recommend. It is a rip off!!!! Very disappointed. read more

T I had the shrimp ajillo and my boyfriend had the steak in red sauce the food was so good and fresh. We also had the tree Leche which was amazing. Everything we had was absolutely amazing. This is a new restaurant to our area. The food is great. I tried an assortment of appetizers and the main meal. The sampler was made of little pastelillos, alcapurrias, sorullitos, and rellenos de papa. They were on point. My wife had the pastelillos de jueyes(crab meat) and camarones(shrimp). The pastelillos reminded her of the ones from Puerto Rico. I had the delicious bestec encebollado (steak with onions) and a side of mofongo. I would definitely return to this location. Stopped in for a quick lunch and OMG what an incredible meal. Was greeted and seated by a super friendly waitress that also reviewed the menu for us. The menu has pictures and description in English and Spanish. I was able to point to the pork sandwich that I wanted. After 3 failed attempts of me pronouncing properly with her assistance she decided to just call it a pork sandwich. The sandwich arrived toasted and was the best pork sandwich I have had since my trip to Old San Juan. My husband and I ate there a week ago and the food was amazing, and the girl answered all my questions and was very helpful and gave us a great first impression. So, last night my husband wanted Spanish for, for his birthday, and we called in to place an order. The girl who took our order was no help at all. They didnt have the dish my husband gets so I asked if they made the dish with pork, and she said yes. He got his side of rice and beans and I had my order. We get home and he opens his takeout and the rice was white, Chinese style rice, no potatoes and barely any beans. The pork dish was not the pork stew he ordered, but instead it was fatty on every piece, tough, and grissly. The dish was loaded with salt. My fries that were supposed to be well done were soggy and barely cooked. I called right away after dissecting what he could manage to eat, but they were closed. At 830pm. The menu says 9pm. So I call today to explain to the girl and she told me that it was my fault that I should have not eaten the meal and saved it to bring back to show them, so they are able to see what they need to work on .And why didnt I bring it back right away. I told her I called and they never answered. She said oh yeah we close at 8. So I told her that he ate what he could , and I can pull out of the trash the fat that he pulled off the pork. And the salty beans and rice.But honestly, I only called to let them know and nothing else, but after she took no responsibility and came at me like I was wrong, and asked me what I expect her to do? She said what, give your money back, remake the food? And it won't be delivered, my attitude changed. She said if I worked in a restaurant I should know this. I said no, what you don't know is the customer is always right, and I will never order from there again, and make sure others dont waste their money there. read more

I went to La Orocovena Restaurant on Delsea Drive in Vineland, Jersey on Thursday because I craved some good Puerto Rican food. I went because two of my sisters and my brother-in-law went a few weeks ago and haven't stopped raving about the food. We all live about 45 minutes away, but it was worth the drive! I ordered the appetizer sampler which provided an assortment(three of each) including mini pastelillos, alcapurrias, stuffed potatoes, and sorullitos. I called before going and learned that they only have the pasteles on Friday. Since I love pasteles and it wasn't Friday I instead ordered one alcapurria for my niece and one for me. They are actually made from all of the very same ingredients as pasteles except alcapurrias are fried instead of boiled. What a treat! They actually taste better than pasteles because they're nothing more than a pastel with a light CRUNCH on the outside which makes it even more yummy! My niece ordered a sirloin sandwich which was made using pressed platanos in place of the bread. I ordered mofongo (a form of mashed plantain bananas) with sautéed garlic shrimp. Because both meals looked fabulous, I gave half of my meal to her, and she gave me half of hers so we had the best of both worlds! It was wonderful! I plan on going back for alcapurria, the mofongo and shrimp, and to try some of the other plates on the menu in the near future.
