I was there to get pastries for Mother's Day weekend. I got several pastries, I bread loaf (de Agua ) also a flan de queso and a small regular flan . I also picked up Alcapurias . I'll start with the bread it was soft and delicious. The pastries were all delicious and fresh . The regular flan was a bit too dense not soft and creamy . We have not tried the flan de queso . I will update later . The Alcapurias were delicious just a bit too small . The establishment looks very clean . The man in the pastry register was not open about recommending anything . Always plenty of parking I love coming here and getting bakery item, pastellio and a platter when I'm really hungry. I initially had issues when I would go and attempt to place an order. Most staff members didn't understand me or speak English. I would sometimes have people in line order my beef and cheese pastellio despite me reading from the sign in front of the dish and pointing to exactly what I wanted. I go so often that I think they recognize my face. I've even put my co-workers onto this place and we frequent it often, so often that it's in our rotation when we have big events and need catering. However, this week my co worker had a very negative encounter with one of the workers. My co worker is not Hispanic and goes often (at least once a week but often twice a week). She goes to order her usual of a chicken and cheese pastellio and the worker behind the counter tossed her hands up in frustration and got another worker to assist her. My co worker said the same thing she said to the 1st lady who said ok, and told the other lady in Spanish what was asked for before going back to do what she was doing. The lady put the pastellio in the bag and walked it to the register where she tossed it on the counter and once again tossed her arms up in frustration. This is very rude. We spend a lot of money in this establishment and although we do not speak the language, we try when ordering and we may not have the accents but you also understand what we are ordering. I too have had a similar encounter when I first started going where people would just look at me and get someone else to help. Only for me to hear them speaking broken English when they felt like it. Some of the best, if not the best, Puerto Rican food in Philly. I was working close by this place - a few blocks away, and was actually lured in by the smell. Everyday around 10:00 am, the smells of mofungo and pernil are radiating throughout the neighborhood. Now I can't go without ordering for lunch, maybe a little side dish for dinner, and some dessert/pastries too. I have never had a dish/meal here that wasn't absolutely delicious. I leave fully satisfied and wishing I ordered more every time. I can sit here and list all of the items I have tried and would recommend, but it would end up being half the menu. But you have to grab at least 1 empanada when you're there - there's cheese, beef, chicken, beef and cheese, chicken and cheese, shrimp and crab filled. If you're looking for a sandwich, the cubano or el entregao, con todo is the way to go. The platters and the mofongo dishes are amazing also. The bakery always has a line of people waiting. My pastry favorites here are the tornillos and the guava pastelillos, but only because I can't stop ordering them to try anything else. You can order online off of Grubhub (not sure if any other app/website works with them), if you don't feel like waiting in line when you get there. Sandwiches are made to order, and take about 15ish minutes to make, same with any made to order items. If you don't speak Spanish you may struggle a little here. The staff speaks mainly Spanish, there are a few staff that speak some English but not everyone does, so be sure to know what you're ordering and do your best if you encounter a language barrier. Being that I lived in Puerto Rico for a few years when I was younger, you can imagine how excited I was when I heard about a Puerto Rican bakery in Philly! As soon I saw it on Yelp, I was quick to bookmark it and only one week later, I made the drive over to check it out. This bakery is located in a strip mall which I was very happy about - if there's a way for me to avoid parallel parking, I'LL TAKE IT. The bakery feels very homely and authentic. The woman that took my order was a complete doll. She made sure everything I ordered was handled with care and wrapped and packaged perfectly. I chose an assortment of sweets to bring home including three different puff pastries (guava, piña, and cream cheese) and a pineapple and cream cheese cake like pastry. Unfortunately, I don't know the name of the last one but it was my favorite (see photo)! The cream cheese and pineapple was a great combination. Perfect balance of fruity, sweet, and creamy. It was also huge making it good to share! The puff pastries were very flaky. The guava is the one that stood out to me the most. It was bursting with flavor! Be warned that it is definitely a messy eat - there was powdered sugar EVERYWHERE. The other two pastries were good, but a little dry. I'd probably skip out on them next time. Prices are fantastic. Everything I got ranged from $1 - $3 a piece. I'm very happy to have discovered this place and would love to visit again to try their food and more pastries and sweets! Since I'm not in this area very often, I probably won't be visiting El Coqui as much as I would like, but it's a place I'll keep in mind for days when I can make the trip. First of all it always feels like home, foods always neat from breakfast to lunch an dinner. Foods always cooked everyday you can definitely feed your family, way less then going to a fast food chain. Sándwiches made with love sweet bread or regular bread still good. Only come here for the bakery and only then late afternoon. If you come in morning you'll be in line until the afternoon anyway. The food is traditional Spanish fare but underwhelming and cold. Rice and beans doesn't look fresh. Chicken hard as a rock and cold. The dough for chicken patties is delicious (hence my recommendation for baked items) but that was cold so took away from taste. They need a better system for service. The person who gets your food also moves over to ring you up. This makes for slowest moving line in history of fast food places. And every employee is surly. Worst Experience ever, last Friday for lunch I decided to not cook and bring my family dinner. so I waited in line their was 11 customers in line when it was my turn to order the front counter is a mess all of the people waiting in line was all over me and the mess of customers trying to place their food orders. I was approached by a woman I started to tell her what I wanted so I started by ordering a green salad with tomatoes, morcilla, arroz con gandules, along with 8 alcapurrias, when I order my roast pork I said may I get the crackling skin with roast pork she said that they didn't have any skin she indicated that they cook the roast pork all shredded so people can eat heathy I was not going to let someone tell me how to eat roast pork. I said those decisions should not come from anyone but the customer. then she recommended fried pork chunks I said ok when I got home to serve the food it got worse the rice was not a typical Puerto Rican rice it was like serving rice with soy sauce and salty as can be. the fried chunks of pork was a pieces of salt, the green salad was on a side of my rice platter 1 tomato, and piece of yellowish brown lettuce. the only good items was the morcilla which its already made and they sell it by the pound. The surprise is that I am a Chef that specializes in the Puerto Cookery owned and operated a Restaurant in Old City Philadelphia with Catering services for corporate functions and all events. the most important thing about a restaurant is to maintain authentic recipes and have your staff educated with customer service along with recognizing the Puerto Rican cuisines even if you are not from Puerto Rico. I have been to Coqui 3 times before this has been my worst experience, I will be calling El Coqui to speak to the owner I waisted $ 50 on food that was not editable I will not come back the biggest joke about my experience is that if they really care about the well being and the customers health the food is a silent killer with the excessive amount of sodium, I don't like to give negative feedback but the woman that took care of me asked me in front of the public if I came from Guavate Puerto Rico that specializes in the Best Roast Pork of the Island she tried to mock the situation but I have too much class for her lack of knowledge. so my final score for El Coqui is - 1 read more

I've been here several times and although the food is good, they are definitely lacking in customer service. Every time I've been, I've had subpar customer service. The bakery side is usually better so I'll give them that.
