While visiting family in Urbana, we were taken to La Palma in order to 'go somewhere other than the usual.' From the parking lot, La Palma looked like any typical restaurant you could envision. Once inside that vision changed.... To exactly what you'd envision a Mexican restaurant to be! The color scheme, the decor, the terra cotta orange colored tiles, the scents from the kitchen...... The service was exceptionally quick as we were among only 3-4 tables in the mid-afternoon. The food was brought to the table with a quickness not seen in many food restaurants! It was also delivered mistake free! Most definitely unusual in the food industry. The portions were too big for me... but for the men in our party nearly cleaned their plates! I had a taco salad and the only complaint I have is that the meat wasn't drained well enough.... Making the shell soggy. I feel that's a common Mexican restaurant occurrence, tho. In the end.... I'd still recommend La Palma. I know there isn't a lot to choose from in Urbana, so check it out.... At least it's not fast food! read more

The a/c in the main part of the building didn't work. I had chicken fajitas. When they were brought out, they weren't sizzling and turned out to be barely warm. The flavor was very bland. The salsa tasted like a cheap store bought. Will not be visiting here again. read more

DISCLAIMER - I am a New Mexican so my definition of quality Mexican food is based on Southern New Mexico cuisine. This does not compare. If you have not been to NM and enjoyed our culture and food I recommend a road trip. If I lived in Ohio and this was my only option I would say it would be a fair choice. The menu is huge - lots of variety and lots of choice. The price is fairly reasonable. The waitstaff is VERY hardworking. The Restuarant is clean and very spacious. I really don't know how to categorize the food because it was outside of the definition of what I enjoy. But the cheese on the burrito plate was good and my eating companions from the Midwest enjoyed their plates. Aside from some interesting signage the bathrooms are standard and well kept. read more

45 minutes to get food is redunkoulous. We got up to leave after 35 but we're told it would be out in five. Waiter was very apologetic, but we saw other people who were seated after us with different servers get their food before us. I don't know root cause, kitchen, management, waiter...don't care, two small kids ordering quesadilla and for adults ordering two taco salads and two normal menu items. Food presents was ok, my chicken taco salad was ok, chicken did not have much seasoning. The waiter did give us the pitcher of margaritas on the house for the wait. I don't think the salsa is anything to get excited about. read more

Met a friend here for dinner and a margarita. Margarita was okay, the food was overcooked, mediocre at best. Granted - it's Urbana, and I normally only come for Crabill's and to see my relatives, and I know few people that speak "highly" of La Palma except as a bar, so I figured "why the fuck not?" Why the fuck would I make that mistake again, is something I won't have to say. The carne asada was overcooked, and overall it was pretty damn mediocre. First visit here after passing by a few times. It's a typical modern Mexican place, with the usual colorful decor. Great service- very friendly and efficient without being intrusive. We got the cheese dip, a white cheese that is not queso fundido (also on the menu.) It wasn't bad with the tortilla chips. My friend and I both got the #1 combo: burrito, enchilada, chile relleno, all covered with sauce. All were quite good, but I'll admit my attention was more on my companion than the food... Overall, a nice place, and worth a return visit. read more

For starters, I've been to a lot of Mexican restaurants in my day since it is my favorite food. La Palma is no different than any other Mexican restaurant that I've been too. Food is always decent and cheap. The food is always quick, but service typically isn't. I will say, they have huge party rooms you can reserve and we've done so on multiple occasions for groups of 10-40 people. That is a huge plus, especially because there really isn't anywhere else close for a large group get together. In short- there is nothing to rave about or complain about; it is exactly what you'd expect from a low priced Mexican restaurant. read more

Pretty typical Mexican American fare. As a huge Mexican food fan I was really hoping I could find something on the menu that was really authentic. But, for Americanized food it is good and the portions are generous. I love the carna Asada tacos and California Burrito. The salsa is nothing to write home about and very mild and the carnitas are disappointing (although the carnita nachos aren't bad). I really love Mexican soups and none are offered here nor is barbacoa. The margaritas are pricy but damn good. The family and staff are usually very welcoming and friendly and clearly hard working but staff turnovers happen that throw things off from time to time. I love La Palma in Bellefontaine and the location in Urbana is large and beautiful from the outside so I just had to check it out. We went in the middle of summer on a Tuesday afternoon. They had no air conditioner running, just open doors (which meant I was sweating while eating my hot meal and there were TONS of flies we had to swat constantly!). The food was the same as in Bellefontaine, so no surprises there. The interior was colorful and tacky in a cute way, but I didn't care for the cheesy local ads printed on every single table. Whenever I see these advertising tables or menus I just feel like I'm in a desperate, cheap restaurant whose focus is money and not the food or the customers. Always a turn off for me, but that's just a personal preference. Overall, the food at Urbana's La Palma was as tasty as I was expecting but I'll be sticking to the one in Bellefontaine from now on. read more

Six of us met for dinner in Urbana. 2 from near Delaware, 1 from Springfield, 1 from Vandalia, and 2 from Troy. All of us were very pleased with their incredibly delicious food. We were in a hurry so we were just looking for somewhere quick. We had the nachos supremo and they tasted alright, but the nachos were so soggy we had to eat the chips from the fresh basket of chips. The service was awful. Very stingy with salsa and napkins, never came back to check on us, had to beg for a second glass of water, and took forever to get the check. I always love coming to La Palma. It's the closest thing to authentic Mexican food you'll get here in Urbana. Portion sizes are nice and big and the prices are reasonable. I always get the Fajita Nachos and a side of queso. The queso is incredible. The wait time for food is fast as well. This time I only had to wait about 5 minutes for my food after ordering it. They have excellent Margaritas (which come at a special price Thursdays for ladies night!) the combination dinners are tasty as well as the taco salad. and my favorite part, the chips and delicious salsa they provide when you arrive. This is a nice Mexican restaurant! For a small town like Urbana it's nice to have a Mexican restaurant that gives you a taste of Mexico from the restaurant decor to its food. Staff seemed friendly and the food comes out fast. I had #15 on the menu and I thought it was delicious. Good prices and I also love how the menu items have pictures for each dish. One criticism I do have is about the water they serve. I know it's tap water but it really tasted super chlorinated (could've been the ice also-not sure). I let one of the staff members know so hopefully that changes later. This is my first time in Urbana so if that's how all the tap water is at other restaurants then I'm just not used to it. I have been here several times in the past but, apparently as with some restaurants customer service is no longer important. . I ordered carnitas and couldn't beleive they even served them to me as they were over cooked, burnt, too tough to chew, very small portion(a few really tiny pieces) and the two larger pieces were all fat. We waited over 45 minutes for our meals and they were barely warm. When we asked for a replacement tony our waiter said well it's all the same so no sense in replacing it for you as it is already made. So I asked why then did it take so long? He was rude and argumentative. We ordered a different meal but when the bill came was charged for the original more expensive meal that we could not and did not eat. I have never been so displeased with my service or been treated so poorly. I will not be returning. There are plenty of other restaurants willing to show me what real customer service is. read more
