BUSY spot on a Friday night, and definitely worth the hype, the drive over from Springfield, and the approx. 15-20 minute wait to be seated. Some interesting "new" Mexican choices on their menu, and that, along with quick, attentive service, reasonable prices, and a cozy, though spacious atmosphere, made for a MUY BUENA choice here in Troy!! They've got some tempting cocktails, but the Mr. went for a XX draft and I had agua (que aburrida!!) He ordered choripollo, which was a HUGE chicken breast w/plenty of chorizo and cheese, and I ordered a MASSIVE bowl of their crema de elote (cream of corn) soup, which was ok, but kind of watery and a bit bland. I spruce the leftovers up the next day, and made a hotter, creamier soup that was still two portions!!) and two chiles rellenos off of the a la carte menu. Yum!! We were last here YEARS ago, when this spot was home to the 55 Grill, and were happy to see it "hopping" again, with a reasonable, covid-sized crowd, nice decorations, good music, and definitely something for everyone... We ate here tonight! The outside of the restaurant looked new and modern and welcoming. We were seated right away. We chose a high top. They have a nice bar with a big selection of beers and cocktails. We ordered ceviche and it was really flavorful and fresh. The chips were warm and salsa was great as well. My husband ordered camarones a la Diabla, and I got camarones a la ajillo. We both enjoyed our dishes. The service was great and our waitress attentive. Another person stopped to check in on us as well and inquired if everything was to our liking. We'd definitely go back! read more

My family and I often meet at the same Mexican restaurant on 25A in Troy, Ohio. Recently that restaurant had changed hands and we heard it's not the same (not in a good way either) so we decided to give La Catrina a chance since it is also kind of new in this area. The restaurant is setup so nice, it's dark inside which has a calming feel and wide open. There was a small stage which I guess they sometimes do karaoking but today it was setup for "Day of the Dead" (it's October so I'm guessing in celebration of Halloween?). Our server was really friendly and knowledgeable. We had a party of 9 and she took our orders and handled us very well. Husband ordered street tacos and he was pleased with them--he always gets the "trifecta"; beef, chorizo and chicken. The beef and chorizo were good as expected but the chicken was dry...as he suspected it would be. I ordered a seafood chimichanga (which isn't on the menu) but I specifically asked if it could be shrimp and scallops (which are both available throughout the menu). I was told it would be no problem, however when I got my plate it was definitely shrimp and fish--no scallops. Also, when our plates first came out, the "red" sauce shocked us as it was not red, it was a deep brown. BUT no worries, it tasted good and we do not believe it's brown because it's burnt or any other reason that would cause it to be bad. My kiddos were happy with the rice and beans--though we did feel it was a smaller portion that the competition in the area. The service was great, food was excellent, price is right. It get the big '5'. We read the other reviews about slow service but that was not our experience tonight. We had our meals less than 5 minutes after ordering. The whole experience was great! I had the Torta Cubana. It came with salad (that I used in the torta) and fries. The fries were crispy and delicious with some type of crunchy coating. A+ for that one! We had Negro Modelo beers with dinner and I finished with an 1820 tequila- nice! My SO had fish and carnitas tacos. They were a perfectly seasoned set of tacos. Wonderful! They also came with a salad, nice! I'll offer this, Mexican beer should be on tap. The food is amazing and the service quality is outstanding! We moved to Troy in May '23 and have tried every Mexican restaurant in town. This is the only Mexican restaurant I will eat at from now on. 4.5...The food here is very good, I would recommend the Quesabirria tacos! The loaded fries are also a great choice. I have tried many things and only a few things have ever not been perfect. The street corn could have a little more spices and if they drained the corn, it could be way better and less watery. I will say that the cocktails are all to die for! I like the margarita mix used as it is homemade and I am super picky about my margaritas. I also really like the paloma and raspberry bella. The service here is usually pretty fast even with bigger parties. If you want an appetizer to hold you over before the meal definitely check out the queso. I would also suggest sitting at the bar if you only have 2 people since it will be a little quieter sometimes. read more

Very impressed with this place. I'm never not in the mood to try Mexican food! This building has been so many different things but I was very pleased with this venture. There is indoor and outdoor seating. Both seem to be spaced appropriately for social distancing. I came inside to place a carry out order and sat at a table until my food was ready. I ordered the chicken chimichangas with a side of rice and veggies and a jumbo peach margarita. My meal was good! It filled me up and I had enough left over for a second meal. The chicken has good flavor and the chimichanga wasn't overcooked. The red sauce was new for me, I was expecting cheese on top which it didn't have but still I would order it again. The rice was typical Mexican rice and the veggies was a sautéed mix of mushroom, onion, broccoli and peppers. I really enjoyed it although some may be expecting something else. The peach margarita was tasty. I just wish I could've had the option to order the jumbo size to go. They limit you to a medium if you're taking it to go. The meal also came with chips, salsa and a salad. I used the salsa the next morning to top some eggs on my breakfast burrito. It was so yummy! If you haven't tried salsa on some scrambled eggs you have not lived! Almost forgot that I ordered the rice dessert with mango. Not my favorite thing. Refreshing menu. Most impressive was a side dish of black beans. I'm okay with black beans but I usually am board with them. These were DEEEElicious. Fish tacos were okay. Sauces were the high point though. Margarita tasted like sugarwater. I couldn't taste the tequila and could barely taste the lime. I did taste the sugar. And the bartender told me the frozen margaritas are not as good. I appreciated the skinny margarita (their best) but I'm not a fan of orange juice in their mix. It's a fun place in a modern atmosphere, but it is not mousey and it's easy to have a conversation. Trendy is the word for it. I'll go back. I want to try their chili rellenos. read more

(New Mexican restaurant) It's exactly like club 55 when you walk in the door. Massive open areas throughout scream for more tables. It's like everyone sits along the walls, kind of a weird layout. Service is slow, Confused, to be expected for the first month or so. First food item: chips and salsa My son loves it. Lol. Chips are same flavor of la fiesta in Troy however the chips are thicker. Salsa has spice! Good spice, not overbearing but perfect. I totally see people in Troy complaining it's to hot but I love it. Guacamole is a more creamy texture than chunky, has a lot of lime flavor and is different than most guacamole I've had. Very good. My meal came with a chicken tortilla soup, it looks great, it's not. It's like chicken broth with chicken, some rice, cherry tomatoes, cilantro. Boring taste, no flavor, complete waste of space in my stomach. Avoid it. My meal - camarones en crema de chipotle (gulf shrimp in spicy chipotle cream) beans and rice are great, fluffy, great texture, probably some of the best beans I've had with a dish. The shrimp (could be larger) in chipotle sauce was really good as well, again some heat to it that was a really nice touch. Visually the dish was a not pleasing to the eye but overall was pretty good. Also in my dish wer two chipotle peppers that were cooked and soft. When I bit into them they exploded with flavor and heat. My eyes got huge and I thought, holy crap what is this! Excellent touch to this dish. My Sons meal - chicken street tacos, served with cilantro, onion, and lime. He really enjoyed the rice, and said the tacos were great. I feel the food gets a solid 4.5, service was towards a 2 but I understand they are new so for now I'll hold firm with a 4 star review. I look forward to coming back. read more

To be fair, I was in a bad mood. Walked in & waited several minutes to be seated. So many tables not bussed. Had to wait for table. Another couple walked in several minutes later and was seated immediately. I questioned the hostess- man, she was clueless and tried to explain they seat by sections, blah blah blah. I waved her off and indicated just to seat me. Once seated, reviewed menu. Had my heart set on ceviche, but the description indicated it was boiled shrimp. No thanks. My husband and I came here for a quick date night and I am glad we did! I love the decor and the tall ceilings! Our service was wonderful! My husband ordered the Cuban and sad it was phenomenal- best he had had in awhile. I had the fajitas and the were good but don't amazing- steak was tough and over done. This has become our favorite place to stop when we are traveling to see the in-laws. We found it randomly through yelp and now it's probably my favorite Mexican restaurant. I've had some sort of their mole each visit and it never disappoints. My husband loves their chimichangas and our son eats their cheese quesadilla more than he eats anything I make it home. Cannot say enough good things about this place! Best Mexican in Troy by far! Nice ambience, great food and drinks, friendly staff. Outside seating, lots of parking. Things I've tried and recommend: The shrimp in chipotle cream sauce is my favorite. The fish tacos and ceviche are great, too. The Torta cubana is another favorite. The chicken tortilla soup is good, but I love the black bean soup. Pretty sure I've had the enchiladas as well. There are still plenty of items on the menu I've yet to try, but I'm convinced they're probably all great. Definitely worth a try if you like Mexican food! read more

We go here at least once a week & it is always fantastic. Service is great, atmosphere is inviting, place is clean, quick seating, easy parking, and above all the food is superb. We have developed some favorites - starting with the Tinga street tacos made with soft corn tortillas and really fresh onions/cilantro. The chicken is really tender and flavorful. This is probably the best regular entree item they have, IMO. We also absolutely love the chicken tortilla soup. A small bowl of soup comes with the meals, or you can order a huge bowl for your main course of lunch or dinner. It's plenty big enough for a full meal. Very delicious! Our kids love the black bean soup and the veggie fajitas. Other favorites are the tortas, omg that bread! And anything with their mole sauce on it. Best mole around. This place is amazing. But I have to tell you they have the best margaritas in the land by far! She eventually came back and mopped by the table. The busboy seated us, 2 of the 3 in our group had grabbed menus beforehand. They never brought another menu, or came back to the table. After sitting for at least 10 minutes without anyone coming over we got up and left. It was like we were being actively avoided. Our group consisted of my mom(70s), my brother (34) and me (37).
