So I ordered 3 things for takeout: the beef chimichanga, a pupusa, and the guacamole dip. First, the "chimichanga"... uh that was NOT a chimichanga. It was not deep fried at all. It was a nasty soggy mess. The refried beans that came with it were inedible. Yuck. The rice? Dry and tasteless. I'm from Southern Arizona so maybe I was spoiled on good Mexican food, but this was bad. Second, the pupusa - supposedly their signature item. It was just dry flatbread. No taste. I thought it was supposed to be filled with something? It was empty and flat. Finally, the guacamole. This is why I gave it 2 stars instead of 1. The guacamole was delicious! Seriously that stuff was good and the homemade chips were legit. Very good stuff. Would buy again. But after a nasty dry pupusa and the gross main dish chimi and beans and rice, two stars was the best I could do. Not recommended. read more

My husband is from El Salvador and they specialize in Salvadoran and Mexican food so we figured we would give it a try. For appetizers we ordered pupusas which were fried to perfection and filled perfectly with the right amount of ingredients. They were so tasty. The salsa and chips were okay. They were a little thicker than a typical cantina style chip and the salsa was very mild. For main dishes I had crispy beef tacos and he had the beef fajitas. The fajitas came out sizzling and looking and smelling amazing and tasted well. The tacos were crunchy (just like I like them) with great seasoning. Both came with creamy beans which were tasty as well. We sat outside as the inside had a little bit of a smell. The server was great and very attentive. It was a nice evening and we will definitely be back. read more

If you've ready any of my other reviews, you will know that I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Mexican food! It's my favorite. And I think this place is EXCELLENT. Their food is consistently delicious and their prices are great. The service is attentive and will keep your drinks full, especially if you're drinking water.... Seriously, several servers seem to wander the restaurant at all times offering refills, even before you've taken your first sip (ok, maybe slight exaggeration... but maybe not). As far as the odd ambiance - ie. dozens of piniatas hanging over your head - and somewhat crowded table layout, I have no complaints and still have zero reservation about giving this place 5 stars. I've been here a few times and I think it's pretty good. First time I got some enchilada dish, which wasn't bad. Subsequent times I got something I can't pronounce that has a pupusa, tamale, fried yuca, and refried beans. It's pretty tasty. It also comes with a couple of pieces of fried plantain. I love fried plantains. I'm not a fan of their salsa. It's too raw to me... tastes like raw tomatoes, and I hate raw tomatoes and thus I hate salsas that taste like raw tomatoes. I haven't been able to find great Mexican food in DC yet, but La Plaza is an ok option in the Capitol Hill area. The food and service are good - they have free chips and salsa, which is always a plus (although in my mind it's pretty much mandatory for a good Mexican restaurant). The chips and salsa at La Plaza are ok - we added salt to the chips, and we went through the salsa quickly, but luckily they are good about refills. Despite eating lots of chips and salsa though (I mean...it's there, right?), they weren't my favorite - the salsa is more like pico de gallo - very watery with some tomatoes and onions. It's hard to really taste it unless you get a lot of tomatoes and onions on your chip. For our entrees, we both got chicken fajitas -- the fajitas were good but a little pricey (especially for the amount of chicken you get). The chicken was cooked well but didn't have a ton of flavor. We got plenty of tortillas, beans (no rice though), and a little bit of pico de gallo and sour cream. We didn't get much lettuce either. There were plenty of sauteed peppers and onions. We didn't get drinks, appetizers, or Salvadoran food, so we'll have to go back again and try more -- for now though, I can't give any higher than 3 stars. I honestly think the only reason I keep coming back is the free tequila shot at the end. The food is pretty meh and there are certainly better mexican options in the vicinity. La Plaza is a complete hole in the wall and usually not very busy. The service is alright. Most of the staff do not speak english well so it can be a little hard to communicate. Not the ideal setting for a small group but they do accommodate large parties very well. I took a group of 8 friends there to celebrate Cinco de Mayo and they were more than happy to keep the pitchers of margaritas flowing, we never had to ask for a refill. Strong, but expensive drinks. The food can be a little overpriced too depending on what you order. If you're looking for a great place to start a boozy filled night. La Plaza is definitely a great option. Not recommended for dates or anyone looking for a classy meal. read more

Free Tequila Shots All Around .... no joke! La Plaza Restaurant has the standard tex-mex fair you expect to find in DC. Where La Plaza stood out for me were the margaritas and the free tequila shot after every meal. I went to La Plaza with a party of 8 to kick off our Saturday night on Barrack's Row and had a fantastic experience. The waiter made sure that we never ran dry of chip, salsa and margaritas. I can kind of see why regulars come back. La Plaza can seem like the typical Mexican restaurant as they do have the regular offerings, but they also have a few items that are more specific to Salvadorian food like pupusas and other entrees. The salsa here is tasty, as in they actually make this stuff fresh and it's got a good kick to it. The chips are crunchy, but the colored chips kinda creep me out. Purple and green chips can't be natural even with "natural" food colorings/additives. Jus sayin.' I wasn't feeling particularly adventurous, so I got a chicken burrito al pastor. Unfortunately, it's not amazing like the tacos al pastor I've had in Cali, but it was still ok. It's still better than some tex-mex places I've been. Maybe it's because we were taking our time at first, but it seemed they had forgotten our order. Granted we had a pitcher of margaritas and they were giving us our space, I really think service could have been better. I probably wouldn't come back unless it was to try the more "special" food items. read more

Went in here with a large group last week. Actually, before the large group showed up, i showed up with 2 other friends. We were the only people in the entire place. We ordered 2 drinks and asked for separate checks, the bartender said "no that's too complicated" and said he couldn't keep track of that. Seriously? it was only going to get busier from there.... As the rest of the group poured in, we found that the food was solidly "meh" (not bad, but not great) and that the service was decidedly poor. they didn't really give us enough menus and they were slow to take orders. I have been here once, and so far so good. We went for lunch, and all food was satisfactorily filling and tasty, while service was also nice and prices are reasonable. Also, they've got outdoor seating in front, so it would potentially be a really nice place to sit sip drinks and ruminate your dinner on a hot DC summer night. I also suspect this may be one of those places that's good for watching a game of soccer, as they've got the tv screen, and also a cute little kid who was very enthusiastically practicing his game outside the restaurant (and occasionally playing with willing patrons). If any one of the three Mexican places on H St delivered, I would never order from here. Perhaps it's time for me to start doing takeout. La Plaza is the only delivery option for Mexican food that isn't California Tortilla (which I love, but has a $10 delivery fee) or some random place on Caviar that I've never heard of and will inevitably take like, two hours to get to me. So we order from La Plaza a couple of times per month. The food is overpriced for what it is. I've tasted enough of the menu to know it's not just one or two things. This is deeply American-ized Mexican food cooked quickly, with little attention to detail. Is it edible? Yes. Will is satisfy that craving for Mexican food? Yes. Will you regret ordering it? Possibly. It's expensive for what it is, for sure. The guacamole in the tortilla bowl is like, $8 for 1/4 cup of mediocre guacamole. It's just... not totally worth it. La Loma is much better quality and value, though I'd have to get off my butt to pick it up. So will I stop eating here? Nah. Just lower my expectations. read more

I had four tacos, nachos, and two sodas all for $20. The place is quaint and definitely does not try too hard to be fancy or over the top with the decorations. They are more of a fast casual place than a sit down restaurant(they do have booths and tables to eat at). The counter service was quick and polite. The cashier offered me refills and had a pleasant vibe all around. Food was off the chain! Came out hot and tasted great. It's a little pricey for the quality but it hits the spot. All the food is handmade and there's a great option of drinks. It's obviously family run and the food is tasty (if a bit run of the mill). The owner stopped by a few times to check on our table and gave us an appetizer (taquitos) on the house to get a feel for the food. The wait times can be a little long but the wait staff are friendly and attentive. They also gave us free tequila shots with our check. Ok.. Where to start... I was hopeful of this hole in the wall from reviews, however the decoration is the least of concern!! Service was non-existent . ( even though 5 servers hovered the bar throughout our whole meal as if we were not there... Not a deal breaker) lets carry on.. We order our appetizer (which never came or mentioned about not coming by server) we ordered our meal... While it was good it was not what we ordered. ( server made suggestion on how what we choose should be cooked, which of course we took) still nothing was right. Saving grace was margaritas... However well tequila is not worth $10.25 a piece... I really wasn't impressed with the quality of the food. My company said his meal was too salty (steak, chorizo and shrimp with garlic butter sauce). The fajita was a satisfying alternative. My papusa was good, although they make them a little harder on the outside than I prefer. The service is friendly and accommodating. It seems to be family owned and even the children were chipping in to clean up. We came right before closing and they made us feel welcomed and unrushed. By far one of the worst restaraunt I have ordered from. The nachos were burnt in a few places, and the beans were a tiny little smear at the bottom of the chips. The queso was clearly melted velveeta with some tomatoes dumped in. The food also had zero flavor. read more

I've eaten plenty of burritos in my life. I've rarely seen 12 dollar ones in this area, especially with the abundance of Mexican places around DC. I ordered a burrito, 2 pupusas, and one quesadilla. 30 bucks. OK. So this bill was high but I felt the weight of the three Styrofoam containers and thought something was missing. Nope, everything was just tiny. The pupusas were 2.5 inches around, the quesadilla was 4 inches around and the burrito was about 7 inches long but tightly wrapped in about 1 inch of shredded beef. Nothing was amazing and I walked straight up the street to tortilla cafe. Everything is cheaper, better, and larger. read more

I've ordered delivery from La Plaza several times. The food is good and still warm when it arrives, but not really hot. I never seem to get what I ask for, when it comes to adding comments for each item. I asked for extra salsa - I got none. We ordered soup, but received no spoon. This isn't the first time the items I asked for just didn't make it into the bag. I was certainly charged full price, there never seems to be a problem with the payment process. read more

TERRIBLE service! Waiter didn't take our order until after another table that sat down after us had their order taken. He also stopped by our table only once in 20 minute and spilled a huge puddle of water on our table, and did nothing to help clean it up. We swept it on the ground (outside seating). Our appetizer didn't arrive for 20 minutes even though we ordered the same appetizer as the table next to us, and theirs arrived after about 5 minutes. When I expressed my disappointment with the waiter, he shrugged it off with a pathetic and insincere sorry. At this point we decided to leave. The manager made excuses for the waiter and did not comp the appetizer and soda we consumed. Aside from the pathetic service, the food was bland. The salsa is tomato juice with chunks of onions in it and desperately in need of salt. The chorizo appetizer was bland and I didn't think that was even possible. This is honestly one of the best restaurants I've ever been to in my life. I am always seated quickly and served in a timely manner, although I wouldn't mind waiting as long as I had a pitcher of their delectable margaritas to pass the time! I order something different every time and I have yet to be disappointed- keep in mind that I'd estimate that I've been here over thirty times! Everything on the menu is simply fantastic. Fantastic place. Been coming here for years now. It blows other central american cuisine places out of the water. Best margies in town too. No touristy atmosphere, affordable prices, and friendly service. Owner is there every day, so the food and service is always great. Not just taco's and fajitas either. Full menu of specialties from roast pork, to lomo saltado to chorizo. $9.95 lunch fajitas are the deal of the year. Cheaper than a salad at most restaurants. read more

Laplaza won't likely blow you away, but unless you're an ultra-picky southwesterner, you'll probably enjoy the food here. I've had most of the americanized staples and enjoyed them all. If you're looking for Latin American food that's not terribly fancy but a bit above average, Laplaza is a very safe bet. I plan to be a regular as the weather warms up. I LIKE La Plaza. They have a vegetarian section on their menu (has about 10 items to choose from), and they are the ONLY place around where I have found a bean chimichanga. They also have fried yucca and cheese pupusas, which you don't see everywhere. Every time I have been, it has been good. I recommend the La Plaza salad (romaine lettuce, avocados, tomatoes, hearts of palm, and hard boiled eggs, served with house dressing on the side), and the pinto bean chimichanga. They refused Native American's service this evening claiming they were closed when there were clearly many people in there eating and the sign was on stating they were opened. Their hours on the window stated they were opened until 11pm and it was only 6pm when they refused service to Native American's. read more
