I literally felt so welcomed and cared for at this restaurant plus the food was amazing. It is a quaint location, but the love you feel from the workers and food is above and beyond. This location has been a long time coming. My wife and I often take walks and they have been getting this place ready for what seemed like forever! We made the walk up yesterday and decided to get some takeout. The menu is in Spanish and English which is great for those of us that didn't do well en Español class. We got an empanada, 3 rolled tacos, and a rice/chicken dish. The empanada and rice dishes were amazing. The rolled tacos were a little different, but we both decided we really enjoyed them. The woman behind the counter apologized because it took 10 minutes for our food to come out. We laughed and told her there was nothing to be sorry about! Great people and amazing food. This is an unassuming gem in downtown Ephrata. Tried their empanadas during the Ephrata fair, and whetted my appetite for a return visit. With wife and kids in tow after a long day out, it seemed a good alternative to the "umm, what's for dinner" dilemma. We've been to this building under different restaurant iterations, so that was familiar, but the menu was a wonderful mix of Dominican and Costa Rican menu items. Translation: lots of unfamiliar, non-Mexican entrees. Verdict? Fantastic. Kids chicken tacos- prepared differently, in a crispy, fried, corn shell were great, and were only $4 for three tacos plus cabbage salad. I had a pancake-like frittata (name eludes me) with cheese and sausage inside...excellent, and my wife had a stew, likewise great. Total bill for two adults and three kids was $24. This is more "La Boramex'" than "El Serrano", which means it's cheap, informal, and really good. La Promesa definitely has climbed into the top 5 easy, affordable, go-to places in Ephrata. Very unusual experience. The building is attractive and the dining area comfortable in appearance. It was, however, freezing and there was a gigantic, blazing space heater plugged into the wall. It didn't seem to help unless it was pointed directly at us. Children ran back and forth from the front of the restaurant to the kitchen area ... they seemed to belong to our server as she seemed to watch after them in between running from the front of the house to the back. The food was ok. To be fair, we couldn't really tell what we were ordering and we weren't sure what to expect. The portions were good, the food flavorful but it wasn't very hot. The salads, although small and plain, were the best part of the meal. The restaurant apparently only has one bottle of oil & vinegar salad dressing because our server yanked it from our table claiming someone in the front of the restaurant needed it. Despite placing identical orders, except for an appetizer for my buddy, our bills were the same -- which didn't seem fair. Our server -- now turned cashier -- claimed because it was our first time at La Promesa, the appetizer was free. Overall, eh, it was ok. I've had better, less expensive food in warmer, friendlier and quieter places. read more

I wasn't sure what to expect... I wanted to stop at Phoenix noodle house, but it was between their posted hours. So I was heading down to Roma, for a quick sub and someone recommended this place. I didn't even know the place existed, but I like trying new stuff, so I went across the street. Let me add before I write all this, I hate the idea of giving anyplace a 5 star, just doesn't feel right, but the few I have I think are deserving. This place is no exception. Inside is nothing fancy, but the three ladies at the front were very nice. Quite honestly I didn't recognize some of the stuff on the menu but that never stopped me. I took their recommendation of some yucca, a chicken tamale, a corn tamale, and three rolled tacos. It came out reasonably fast. I was able to sorta sample each item, knowing I was going to take some home. The yucca was great. I've seen them in the produce department, but never knew what to use them for. Well, they seem to make great French fries type of item, with an exceptional taste. On this dish there were a few pork fried pieces, that I'm not sure what they were, lol, but were super. Next the tacos came out. They were rolled and fried and had a cole slaw and a red sauce on top. Not how I typically get tacos, but these were great as well. I ate one, and figured I had to pace myself. Finally, I got the one corn and one chicken tamale. I was thinking the chicken tamale was going to be my favorite item, they talked me into trying one of each, but as good as the chicken tamale was, the corn tamale was like a taste of heaven. I was shocked at how wonderful that one item was. I'm not even a huge fan of corn, but the flavor and texture was superb. I complimented the ladies on how great my brief meal experience was. I was thoroughly pleased with my food items and promised to be back. I love the fact that we are fortunate to have a recent representation of ethnic food in Ephrata. read more

This is the best Salvadoran restaurant in the area... mostly because it is the only Salvadoran restaurant in the area. We found the dining area to be a bit on the dirty side. The whole place smells like grease to the point we had to wash our jackets when we left. They could benefit from a better ventilation system. The service was okay. The food was decent. Passing through, stopped to get some gas, almost went to a fast food joint but figured an extra mile from the highway would be ok. For $7 I had one of the best seafood soups I've ever had, rich with mussels and octopus and fish, so delicious, followed by a solid flan and café con leche all for $11. Empanadas are amazing!!! And the best part is that they are cheap! I got 3 the other day with fries and a soda. Was very satisfied. Everything is well prepared. Stopped here before grabbing a movie up the street. Cute and clean. Very friendly service. My mango smoothie was outstanding, and my husband's passion fruit smoothie was delicious! Awesome smoothies! BUT, the evening we were there, even though the place wasn't busy at all, our orders took forever. My tacos, which I was really looking forward to, were overcooked (deep fried) which made them difficult to swallow. Can't really describe the filling because it was totally dried out. However, my husband loved his entree of grilled pork chop with rice and beans; the chop was very tender and well seasoned. Because of the positives, we will come back to try again. read more

My wife and I were excited to see some latin-style food open up near our house so we gave it a try last night. It's not 5 star dining, which we didn't expect. The atmosphere is a little odd, with kids "hanging out", but the service was very friendly and the food was very good. We had tostones, pupusas, and the chicken and yellow rice. I wouldn't go here on a nice date night, but I absolutely will be going back for a casual evening meal. It's nice to have an ethnic selection without having to go into Lancaster on the nights we don't have more time. read more

was told they serve Salvadorian style food but closely resembles Spanish style cuisines. the 3 times I had eaten there were only carry-out orders but the ambience is very pleasant and homey restaurant. the food is very tasty and priced affordably. the chicken empanadas never disappointed me though the beef is also delicious but chicken is my preference. there seems to be only 2 people that work there. ones in the kitchen while the other is on the floor but also in the kitchen it seems whenever I'm there, meaning when you walk in you may have to wait or let the lady know that you're awaiting to be seated or take an order for carry-out. read more

This was one of the most ridiculous dining experiences I have ever had. Me, my wife, my daughter and a friend of mine went here to eat. Waitress came out about 5 minutes after we were seated. She took our drink orders. (1 grape soda, 2 waters, and a specialty orange drink that was on the menu) We got the waters and the soda about 10 minutes after that. Then she took our food orders. We all got the tacos and 2 empenadas and a side order of rice and my daughter got Rice and French fries. While we were still waiting on my wife's specialty orange drink by the way. So about 10 to 15 minutes after that she get's her specialty drink. I don't know if it supposed to be room temp but it was. so after waiting another 15-20 minutes my daughter, me and my wife's food came out. My friends food who ordered the same as we got didn't come out for another 15-20 minutes!!! Not to mention that his rice and beans came out an additional 15 minutes after that!!! We were there for an hour and a half - an hour and 45 minutes for fried food at a place that had 3 other tables sat in the entire restaurant. The empenadas were nothing more than an empanada shell with about a tablespoon of ground beef in it and maybe a tablespoon of cheese in them. The tacos were rolled up and fried to the point that they were hard to eat. Overall it was a horrible experience. The waitress was very kind but never said "sorry" for the wait or anything like that. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE TO ANYONE. There is a very good Spanish place not far down the road with great service and a Mexican place about 3 miles away that is amazing. read more
