I am not one to review negatively but I would be remiss not to report this company and my disatrous experience. I've built several homes in my life and never have I encountered a company who promised more and delivered less while misleading, lying and taking zero responsibility for their mistakes. May review is not just words. Please see actual images and La Puerta's written responses to my complaints at the bottom. I was initially delighted by the promise of reclaimed wooden doors, jambs, base and case. I was taken through the impressive showroom by owner Scott Coleman who sounded professional and knowledgable. When working together he is adamant that customers initial all approved drawings and samples which would insure we are on the same page and I would receive what I order and approve. None of this happened. Here are just a few of the several disappointments: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The interior doors were all APPROVED BY ME on several drawings. at 6'8". They all arrived short, at varying heights. Their response below is a blatant lie. "Complaint #3 - Interior Door Heights Design Drawings for SA12097 (Interior Doors) were signed by you on 12/19/24. All doors were manufactured to the approved measurements. Per La Puerta Originals Terms and Conditions: 3. The Customer is required to approve all final design drawings included within the contract prior to commitment to the production schedule. The Customer is responsible for verifying all final specifications, and for alerting LPO of all changed specifications that may alter a Product's fit or function.. Our position is that the measurements and size of doors was approved by you and/or contractor prior to manufacturing and were satisfactory for installation in your home. This matter is not our responsibility". ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The lever was APPROVED was to be centered in the middle of the lock rail as is the industry standard. The lock rail manufactured is at 39". 3' , much higher than I approved. (pictured detail below) This was their response: "La Puerta Original's standard installation of hardware is 38 to 40 inches from the floor. Hardware drawn on all La Puerta design drawings do not represent exact placement. Hardware placement can be easily remedied by a qualified and competent contractor, however this is not our responsibility". Seriously? Hardware drawn on my approved sample DOES NOT represent actual placement?? Hardware placement CANNOT merely be easily remedied and how is this not their responsibility? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- All of the wood arrived in a variety of shades, not close to the APPROVED SAMPLE. Please see pictures below. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I spent many thousands of dollars and lost time on my job to correct their mistakes. They have refused responsibility on all fronts, insulting me and my Contactor, whose job is is NOT to correct their mistakes. When I asked again about color, to help make just some of it right, they refused. This was their response, having n nothing to do with color. " As I stated previously, a COMPETENT and knowledgeable contractor would be able to install the doors, and trim with no issues". I should have known to beware when they collected 100% of the fee up front. While in the midst of trying to match new material I purchased to create additional casing around their short doors I requested a can of their stain to try to match color, they charged me for it, plus shipping. NO GOOD WILL WHATSOEVER. I am a trusting person but not easily conned. La Puerto is very convincing but please, do not buy their snake oil. Run, don't walk away. read more

We had a custom mantle (and mounting hardware) created by the crew at La Puerta and the results are amazing. This place is a first class experience from exploring ideas until the installation is finalized. We highly recommend La Puerta for a custom, exterior gate! We had Scott design a replacement gate to create a new look for our front courtyard, after having our stucco repaired. We couldn't be more happy with the result! Granted, they are not cheap, but you get what you pay for. They use re-claimed wood along with custom, wrought iron hardware. Very high quality! Just before the pandemic, my wife and I bought an old adobe near downtown--a tired place "with potential," but in need of much TLC. Fortunately for us, we saw La Puerta's sign, walked in for a look, and immediately were convinced by the samples we saw to let Scott, Melissa, and their team of artisans redo our whole place. What an unbelievable transformation! Our friends' jaws drop when they enter our home. Each room contains touches that exude human warmth and artistic taste. Beware of "Cabinet Karen" and her love interest controller, Kathy. Scott, the founder is the front-end sales guy that will sell the sizzle. But add at least +40% to his initial estimates. Check your hand sketches they want for your approval; they are not CAD and not accurate. Get your hardware selected and resolved early or you'll get fleeced on your hardware. Expect to wait it out with 18+ week lead times, minimum, and you will have to chase them for that, too. Quality assessment 4/10. Most of my doors didn't close properly and blamed on the installer. Errors in dimension killed me having to cut and re-join our island. Value 3/10. Nothing special here.....cabinet plywood mostly and some solid wood. Service experience 3/10. We feel morally obliged to warn others to stay clear of La Puerta Designs. If you deal with them, make sure you have every little thing IN WRITING. They seem nice until you discover they have no integrity. Scott promises anything verbally to get your 90% (!!!) deposit but later renigs on whatever is not in writing. If you do not like something about the workmanship of what they have already made, they just tell you you should like it; that is, there is no attempt to adjust or adapt to requests. They made errors in construction of our kitchen which they never fixed and finally robbed us of a vintage door we had paid for upfront and refused to deliver it (most likely because the job took more hours than they had planned). Quality was spotty as well as shown in photos. We made repeated attempts to get reimbursed for our losses and they outright refused to make things right. read more

CORRECTION I want to give an update from my 9/8/21 posting which was an update from my 8/21/21 original posting (see below). La Puerta Originals did step up and stand behind their work and reputation in a big way. They re-built a beautifully crafted coffee table that exceeded our expectations, shipped it and picked up the old one with no fuss or additional cost. In addition, they let us use the original one until they finished the 2nd. I spent over 3 years building and furnishing a large custom home, I will tell you from experience that most companies want to argue or negotiate their way out of their short comings. So disappointed in La Puerta Originals. I ordered my door in person on 6/2/2021, and it was not completed until 2/14/2022. I am very dissatisfied with the final results -- the actual door is only 77" H x 35-1/8" W, three inches shorter than my original door and almost an inch less in width. It also looks like they used two different species of wood to make the door--the top looks different than the rest of the door. The door and the glass was not cleaned before or after installation, and the glass had what looked like glue between the iron grate and glass. LPO also installed the door handle hardware crooked. To make a long story short, LPO was very rude and difficult to deal with, the kept stalling the completion of the door. Understandably, we were dealing with the COVID crisis, but that is not an excuse for an unprofessional way of doing business and for shoddy workmanship. By the way, I paid approximately $10,000. for the door, glass, hardware, delivery and installation. Scott (one of the owners) charged me $200. for a pencil sketch of the door that he drew. I saved for years to afford a custom door from La Puerta. They were horrible to work with. In the end, thery did not even contact the contractor to size it correctly and it was very late and they were RUDE. The staff was fine, but Craig Stephenson--senior designer--was a real jerk. i will NEVER use them again--and WOW are they ever expensive--for no service at all. read more

Horrible customer service with the Santa Fe office. Our incredibly expensive custom door warped. We were accused of having our sprinklers spraying water on it. That was absolutely not the case. I cannot believe that they manage to stay in business given the attitude we received when we asked that they fix their product and stand behind it. Use at your peril. Doesn't matter if you have a modern design, or more typically here, a "Santa Fe Style" home, you will discover that an old Spanish mesquite door, or cabinets made from Victorian stamped tin ceiling panels, or a coffeetable fashioned from antique doors from Rajasthan, will fit right in. All we could do right is now is the mesquite door, and everyone remarks on it, but the kitchen remodel -- cabinets, counters, built-in espresso machine -- that's next! read more
