My most recent set of purchases have been disappointing. It used to be fun to shop at La Rukico, but now this business is well passed it's prime. Mr. Kelly and the rest of the team don't make great clothing anymore and they really don't care about building a satisfactory experience with customers. Everything I picked up didn't fit after several individual fittings. Lots of good choices in NYC and there is no reason to suffer through a poor clothing experience at La Rukico. Being a long time customer of La Rukico, I decided to make another suit from them for my Wedding. Its amazing to see how my relation with this tailor grew, from the early suit for graduation and now to wedding suit. I did not wanted to make a Tuxedo so I asked Mr. Kelly to advice me designs which will look good as a wedding suit and also which I can use in future. He got some fabrics of Loro Piana Super 170 in black with pine stripes and advised me for Peak Lapel, which looks great. Tailor took my measurements and I got the suit on time. I've been going to La Rukico since about 1992 and over the past 20 years I have purchased in excess of 20 suits. The fabric has always been top quality and Mr. Kelly is very good at guiding you to the perfect suit. I have had some tailoring issues but when there has been even the slightest problem, their tailors take care of it quickly and efficiently. I need to buy some new suits and will be visiting soon. Last order almost six months ago and they messed up twice and third time order came wrong as well and this time they was very mean on the phone and hanged up. Never buying from them ever again. I took two suits to La Rukico Customer Tailors for alterations about two weeks ago. I was a bit worried going to a different tailor (just moved to NYC) for the first time considering that one of the suits was a high end Versace suit and the other a suit that basically had to be rebuilt (massive amounts of work). I was welcomed warmly and treated as if I was the only client in the shop. The owners took the time to introduce themselves, introduce their style of business, etc. Additionally, their head tailor "Max the tailor" is incredible. He knows exactly what he is doing, will make strong recommendations and takes ample time with each fitting, measurement, etc. He makes sure that the alterations are in accordance with the overall style you're going for but will tell you the truth when you need to hear it. I got my suits back in less than a week because I needed one for a wedding, with no extra charge I might add, and they turned out perfect. Max truly is a miracle worker, at least in my experience. Been a customer for 4 years and have had 2 suits, a sports coat, and a tuxedo made here, experience has always been polite and helpful. The fabrics are top notch (I've used Dormeuil, Zegna, and Loro Piana fabrics here and the finished products are wonderful). My oldest suit is 4 years old and wears like new; there is simply no comparison with something off the rack. It looks like a lot of people are giving Mr. Kelly a hard time for having an opinionated view on what fabric and material he prefers to use. I personally have not had that issue here, perhaps because I always had an exact idea in mind of the cut/fabric/price range and always stuck to it, and Mr. Kelly was agreeable to them each time. The turnaround time is quite fast, my tuxedo was ready in 4 weeks, 2 weeks earlier than I expected and in time to make a black tie wedding. Of the 4 jackets I've had made, only one required some alteration after I went to try it on, and it was done in a week and the end results were very nice. To sum up I think Rukico is a pretty great option for those looking for a semi-bespoken suit, have a moderate to high price range, and prizes the quality of the fabric. I would suggest potential customers do some research on the type of suit they would like before walking in. If I could give (minus 5 ) stars to this business as well as to the owner of it, I would definitely do it and I would not hesitate. This is the worse place to have a suit done by a tailor. I gave him two chances to make something for me in two separate occasions and the experience was the worse in both times. First of all, this guy wants to sell you whatever he wants, not what you looking for. He only wants to fix the clothes based on his convenience, not in your needs. They do such of lousy Job making your clothes that you would prefer to buy a suit out of the rack. He usually buys fabrics for a good deal at a Waterhouse and then that's what he wants you to buy. 2) he makes the clothes without thinking what you Want or prefer but based on what it is easy for him and his own choice. When the clothes are done and you come back to try it on, he doesn't want to alterate it so it fits you better. He wants you to take the clothes as it fits and will try to convince you that you look good so that you don't insist in fixing it. If I was you, I would definitely look for another tailor. This guy is a crock and one of the greediest person I ever known. I would definitely not recommend this business, neither to do business with this owner. read more

My history with La Rukico is as follows. I bought two shirts from them about 2 years ago. At the time I received great service, the two owners of the shop I believe are father and son and were very friendly people. Once I got the shirts I noticed that they were of good quality (not extraordinary in anyway but acceptable) but that the neck was far too small. I could not even button the neck, not even close. I am a medical student so the time I have to spend trekking back and forth to midtown to get all this fixed is very limited. I basically forgot about it and just wore the shirts occasionally when I didn't need to button the collar. Two years later I decided to give them a second try. I went in and explained to them that I had previously ordered two shirts from them and that the collar was too tight so I wanted to make sure that the collar fit properly this time. In fact I told them to make it an extra half inch bigger for comfort. Three weeks pass and I get an e-mail saying my shirts are ready. I run in an pick them up quickly without trying them on. Once I get home I notice that while the collar is marginally larger this time it is still much too tight. I wear the collar to work the next day thinking that maybe it will loosen up but the only thing that happens is that in the middle of the day to top button literally pops off. I go back to La Rukico and explain what has happened and how I now have 4 shirts that do not fit me. I ask if he can please fix these two other shirts that I have as well. To my complete shock he becomes enraged, actually shaking with anger, and tells me that there is nothing he can do about a shirt he made two years ago and that I should "throw it away." Needless to say I am very dismayed by this reaction. I would not advise anyone to shop at this place. You will be treated like a king until there is a problem at which point it seems his ego cannot withstand any hint that he may have made a mistake. I will not be back. UPDATE: I recently went back to La Rukico and was subjected to more of the same. Mr. Kelly did indeed fix my shirts and also provided an extra collar should I need one. I would also like to state that the quality of his shirts is good and the price is fair. However, he has by far the worst customer service I have ever experienced. When I went in to pick up my shirts he accosted me about my yelp review and demanded that I take it down. He called me a liar and said it was completely unreasonable to expect him to fix a shirt that was 2 years old. I responded that I understand that 2 years is a long time and that I would have been willing to pay for an alteration but did not think it was reasonable to be completely unable to fix a shirt beyond 2 years. He responded by GRABBING ME BY THE ARM and telling me that I know nothing about the tailor business and so I shouldn't write about things I don't know about. He also mentioned that he could likely not fix a shirt that was even 4 months old because they run out of fabric. Needless to say I was shocked that he would go so far as to actually grab me by the arm. He offered me a refund for the shirts he had just fixed which made no sense to me since the shirts had now been fixed. He again reiterated that the older shirts could not be fixed because the material was no longer available, even though these were solid colored white and blue shirts. Throughout this exchange Mr. Kelly was extremely hostile and aggressive towards me to the point where I felt there was a threat of physical violence. If you go to La Rukico and everything goes perfectly you may well rate this place as 5 stars because the quality is good and the price is cheap. However, as you can see in other reviews on this site as well as elsewhere on the internet, Mr. Kelly has a rage problem and if there is anything that you are not satisfied with you can bet on being treated poorly and yelled at. I will not be back to La Rukico and am more than willing to pay extra money if need be to go to another tailor who will no berate me and even grab me physically. I stand by the accuracy of this post 100% and you can see that unlike some other reviewers I have many other reviews and a good reputation. Update: After giving up on La Rukico for good I went in search for another maker of custom shirts. This search led me to Micheal Andrews Bespoke. I have recently purchased a suit and 1 shirt from them and have to say that the whole experience as well as the final product is infinitely better at MAB. You will pay an extra $50 a shirt (170 instead of 120) but what you get is an incredible customer service experience and a shirt that fits you perfectly. The difference in quality between an MAB shirt and a La Rukico shirt is bigger than the a la Rukico shirt and off the rack--no joke. Don't even get me started on the suit. It is a work of art. So, I had a pair of pants made here... Not sure whether Mr. Kelly ever dealt with ladies before... He was quick and abrasive and I know for a fact he treats his male clients really well - read the previous review. They hemmed the pants w/o asking me about my preffered lenght! I thought they would leave them unfinished but got the pants I could only wear these with flats, which I never really do. I was shocked and appauled. There was no fabric left to remedy the problem! He took the $$ prior to delivering the finished work, so there was little I could do. He barely even looked at me and had his associates do all the work. I guess he gets enough business but fellow yelpers beware! After spending over $300 on these pants, I'd rather go to Bergdorf and my neighborhood tailor for alterations... Shame shame. read more

I've been a customer of Mr. Kelly/La Rukico over the last year (a little longer). During that time I've made purchases for about 15 custom tailored shirts and 2 suits. First I'll comment on the quality of work. Comparing to off-the-rack, and 3 other tailors I've used, Mr. Kelly's quality of work from Hong Kong is, for the most part, top-notch. Shirts have always been the exact detail seen in the swatches and also constructed of good quality (with the exception of two that had the sleeves worn out quicker than normal. The measurements felt true to my actual build however, now thinking back I would have asked for a few tweaks here and there (smaller cut in the back, room for a watch in one sleeve, etc.). So with that I recommend if you go (to any tailor for that matter), either ask questions or specify EXACTLY what little details you want done. After all you are paying for it. The suits were also constructed as detailed and in good quality. I like how little details were not overlooked (back seam on waist pants for support, extra wear material on inside of pant leg bottoms, and of course the obvious signs of a bespoke suit - surgeon's cuffs, embedded name inside suit, etc.). Additionally, Mr. Kelly has always been pretty good about when I come back with some adjustments and to make a couple tweaks here and there. But now onto the service and such. Customer service is anything but "standard" here. One usually looks for the one-on-one customer experience and at the very least to go into a custom tailor to learn more about what he/she would want and such. Like I said, learn NOT lectured or treated with disdain. The initial times I was in I was able to ignore that for the basis that the quality was good, but coming back I felt like I had a burden to deal with every time I wanted to drop by, in having to deal with his poor customer service and lackluster professionalism. I've probably been in a few times over the last few months and yet still they don't even recognize me or have a record in their minds -- poor client relations in my mind. You would think that after 10+ orders this year alone they would know who I was, as well as the 5+ orders from my brother. So in conclusion, I would say if you can get in and cut through the cloud of egotistical B.S. and dictate exactly what you want and keep the hostile tone down, the quality is great and the price is good for what you are going to likely find in the area. read more

This place is excellent. When going to a custom tailor, I look for 3 things, choice of cloth, quality of tailoring and quality of service. Given this is New York, choice of cloth is everywhere and plentiful. Quality of tailoring here is high, the suits and shirts that I purchased came out excellent, fitting perfectly and shaped beautifully. The first time I wore one of my suits I got loads of compliments. I want to focus on service, because it was great. They really make you feel like they want you there and want to do a good job for you. This was a real differentiator. These guys have the skill, the product is great and are willing to apply themselves. When I showed up for my appointment, they were expecting me and were fully engaged. Mr. Kelly showed me as many cloth samples as I wanted to see and answered whatever questions I had. We spent more than an hour deciding on which items to buy. I received a call a couple of days before the promised date on my suits, that they were done. No changes were required, they were right the first time. I did do my research on several other places and have purchased suits at other custom places in the past. La Rukica is where I will go again. read more

My husband is not known for dressing up well so I had to bring him here for some new, modern style custom made suits. Since he has put on weight, both suits are ill fitting. Also, the two suits he owns are all 3-button which is out of date so this means he needed some 2-button suits. My husband was in a hurry to get some suits in two weeks for a wedding we were attending out of town and La Rukico was able to do that. We wind up buying one Loro Piana suit and one Zegna suit. We were happy with the end product...both suits fit perfectly and felt very good on his body. The quality of the material is very good compared to the other tailors who offer "cheaper" materials that are made of polyester. They were even generous enough to throw in a complimentary shirt which was made out of the finest cotton ever. It felt like butter when the salesperson made us feel the material. Not only the fit, materials and service were great, the prices of the suits were very reasonable too. Now my husband is anxious to restock his wardrobe with some new suits and shirts. read more

Wow! I just came from here & had the kindest, nicest & most competent service ever. I came in from out of town with a dress for a black tie wedding that needed some small but crucial alterations to the back bustle. I arrived, explaining that I needed the alterations stat, ( so right away you know I'm being a total pain) , figuring that it was a lost cause & they would simply turn me away. My husband has had 5 custom suits made with Mr. Kelly over the last few years. We have been very happy with all of them. The first time he got a suit made, the in house tailors had to make adjustments on the length of the jacket and the seat and waist of the pants to my husband's taste and after those adjustments were made, he was perfectly happy with the suit. The price is reasonable for the quality of fabric too. Mr. Kelly and the in house tailors are knowledgeable about the latest trends but are happy to make whatever style you want. People always compliment my husband on his suits, both at work and in social settings. Mr. Kelly also provided complimentary alterations and repairs on the suits which we very much appreciate (taking in the waist after a year and replacing the side clasps). Plus, Mr. Kelly treats us like family. All these reasons are why we keep coming back. read more

I also came from a living social deal 60 dollars for a custom shirt. He quickly told me that the material I chose (stripes) was more expensive than solids. LOL Exactly the opposite of what he told Dean Q. who also wrote a review. He charged me 40 dollars extra to make the worst custom shirt I have ever worn. Material is cheap, wrinkles A LOT (even after drycleaning and pressing) measurements are HORRIBLE. I could wear this shirt as a dress, that's how long it is. Conclusion. His quality was always good, but today,his quality is excellent. He only uses the highest grade cloths available. He owns his own factories, maintains very tight relationships with his vendors, and passes the savings through to the clients.
