My girlfriends and I stopped by here on a Sunday before MCASD, and we really enjoyed ourselves. It was a hot day, and the lounge itself is open air no ac, but it was manageable. We sat In front of this beautiful window overlooking the shores. We were greeted immediately and offered ice cold water. We ordered a bottle of sparkling rosé. We did ask for a tasting of two different selections to choose and were given small pours to try before we chose. The server kept checking on us and refilling our glasses as needed. Stopped here while looking at the sea lions and it was just okay. Drinks were way over priced! The view is pretty but you can only see it a little bit in the front. The service was slow and not that friendly. My friend didn't love her drink either. The only pros are the view, they had live music which was nice and the atmosphere is cool. Some of the best views in La Jolla! Host and wait staff were friendly, drinks were tasty, and food was well prepared. Could use the menu items to be a bit more elevated, especially considering where it is. For starters, we had the Ahi Poke Nachos which were good, but the fried wontons were a bit greasy. We also ordered the Cheese & Charcuterie for dinner, but we wish the meat selection was a little better or more elevated, instead of something that looked like it just came from Trader Joe's. Unfortunately it was a big disappointment. I don't mind paying but the quality of food is low. I understand it's a lounge but La Valencia can do better. I ordered crab cakes and I don't know if there was any crab. Mushy texture, lots of bread inside out. According to Michael ( my server) I was the first one to give a negative feedback, and there was obviously no " sorry". I wasn't really complaining but I honestly stated that the crab cake is lacking crab. I left 20% tip just because I have opened restaurants in the past and I know how hard it is to be consistent with quality and staffing especially now. Two of my friends tried the crab cake and all they could taste was bread and oil. So it was 3 of us not being impressed with it for the first time. I wish I had a better experience. The view is gorgeous and I liked the ambience- it's pretty quiet and intimate. The staff was nice and I didn't feel service was slow. The waiter was very polite, dropped off waters and overall good. The views from the patio are incredible (given the weather allows). We sat at a table near the west end of the patio, lots of people coming over to take pics of the view (that can be annoying). Service here was 4 star and super polite and nice. We had the shrimp cocktail to start which was awesome. We ordered a few lunch entrees that were good however of them had some issues. The Mahi Mahi sandwich was good but the Beyond Burger not so good. It was extremely burnt and way over salted. The fries were tasty that came with it. The 3 stars is 100% for the food, it was "ok". It's a fun spot to have drinks and enjoy the views. The inside area just off the patio is also cozy and chill. read more

I have grown up in San Diego and I have been to la Valencia hotel countless times. I have also eaten at La Sala bar countless times and it is one of our favorites to take guests to. We took my in laws this past Saturday (8/31) for lunch. We sat at a beautiful table right by the big window. The service was AWFUL. The server that had out table was rude and worked at the pace of a handicapped snail. There was also a disgusting amount of old food on the carpet. This included half-eaten fish, globs of sauces, lettuce, chunks of bread and, hand to heaven, a used bandaid. It was REPULSIVE. We actually ended up leaving early because it was so revolting. When the server brought the four of us desert, he brought no silverware, plates nor napkins. We asked another server, who never brought us anything. We then found and asked our server. We waited about ten more minutes and then my husband found the server again and said politely, "We are still waiting on silverware, plates and napkins." Instead of apologizing, the server glibly said "Yup, you sure are". It was abysmally disappointing and we were actually embarrassed we brought our guests there. Zero out of ten. read more

We have been to La Valencia many times, which have always been lovely visits, however this last experience in particular was one well never forget. We stopped in to grab a drink after our dinner, where there was beautiful piano playing by the bar. We ordered espresso martinis, and the bartender Trevor went above and beyond for us. My friend was unsure if she would like it and felt like she needed to quickly order, Trevor reassured her she could take all the time she wanted to decide.. he then proceeded to go out of his way to understand her preferences/tastes. Trevor made an off menu INCREDIBLE mint espresso martini for her which she absolutely loved. He was such a joy and made great conversation, he made what would have been a nice evening an unforgettable fun night full of laughter and good drinks. La Salla is a bar/restaurant that is located right after you walk into the hotel. The décor is nice and a bit old school feeling with the piano and big sofas and chairs. You can eat inside and have a view of the ocean or go on the terrace and eat outside overlooking the pool and see some of the beach. We were here on 3 different occasions and each time was interesting. The first one was breakfast and the waiter was great and super on top of all our food which was: -Blueberry pancakes with raspberry sauce on top with tons of blueberries, butter and syrup. My hubby also ordered some bacon that was so good! It had this smoked taste yummy!!! -I had scrambled eggs, wheat toast, potatoes and bacon and everything tasted great! I also had some tangy green tea as well. Over all we loved our food and they had a huge menu with tons of different breakfast choices as we ate on the terrace overlooking the pool. The second one was drinks inside and I ordered this yummy red Napa wine and Bill got a Berry Mojito. Well they brought it over and it had no sweet taste at all. It was like EWWWW! So he sent it back and it took 5 guys to make this new one! It was hilarious watching them make this drink. I'm like we must have the newbie's tonight! This one tasted perfect!! The third one was for dessert and Bill ordered the Berry Crème Brule and I ordered the Carmel Chocolate Torte. The presentation of these both was gorgeous with mine in a long plate with raspberry sauce and mint leaves. Bill's dessert was in a tall glass like pudding and looked strange. We look and we have no spoons to eat our desserts with!! Yikes the newbie's strike again! So finally we get our spoons and mine is good but I'm not wowed! Bill's is ok but feels the berries took over the taste of the crème brule. They also took forever to bring us our bill to sign. Hello we want to go back and enjoy our room! La Sala is a very expensive bar located within the interior lobby of the venerable Valencia Hotel in La Jolla. The management attempted to "hip up" the concept of this clubby hotel several years ago. Unfortunately, some things in life are best left alone in order for their status to reach iconic and timeless. The Valencia eliminated the Whaler Bar, a musty remembrance of days gone by, when the Hollywood glitterati frequented the Valencia in the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s. Now, a generic aura and theme permeate the hotel. La Sala is forgettable and inconsequential. The music in the bar was loud, discordant and obtrusive. The bartender distant and aloof. Thirty dollars later, for one martini and an ice tea, we walked out of the Valencia yearning for the Whaler and its liver and onion special offering at both lunch and dinner. The bartender remembered your name and drink, greeting you like an old friend. Some things are best left undone. The Valencia will never be the same. read more

We found this hidden gem after walking up and down La Jolla and realizing all wine bars were already closed come to find out we had an amazing one in the hotel we were staying at. The servers were amazing as well as our experience and food. We had a few drinks and tried the Brussels sprouts and the meat/cheese board. I loved the variety in the drink menu and their specialty cocktails. Food was great but I do wish there were more meat options on the board. We also tried the PB Chocolate dessert which we were told you either love It or hate It. I didn't like It and that is a personal preference. However, my boyfriend loved It. read more

This is an amazing spot, a hidden gem, in the La Valencia Hotel in La Jolla. I stumbled on this place a couple years ago when I was dating a guy who lived nearby. I fell in love with it and have been back many times. It is in the back of the main floor of the hotel, a cozy beautiful room with sofas and chairs, and wonderful music on Friday and Saturday evenings. You can go in after a nice dinner in the area and sit and enjoy a leisurely cocktail or other coffee drink and listen to some amazing piano or a vocalist. One of the most romantic places I've ever been to in town. Has that old California, old Hollywood feeling to it (many old Hollywood stars of the 20s and 30s visited here - you can see their pictures hanging on the walls on the way to the restroom). We were wandering La Jolla seeking post dinner drinks on a Friday night. We wandered into the La Valencia Hotel seeking the Whale Bar, but were sucked into the lobby lounge due to the live music. I later found that the lobby lounge is called La Sala. Also, the music didn't last long as they stop playing at 9:00PM to prevent disturbing the hotel room guests. Very nice ambience on a Saturday night with comfortable seating and live music. We asked the bartender to make one of our favorite drinks, a blue berry tea. He obliged and made the drink (that he'd never heard of) and surprise...when we got the bill he had charged us $26 dollars for it! I was blown away that he thought this was ok. After realizing that we were appalled, he lowered the price by $10, but made some snarky remark to us. La Sala Lounge is a bar inside the La Valencia hotel, with the food provided by the adjacent The MED restaurant. A drink on the balcony of the La Sala is the best known to me way in La Jolla to celebrate the sun going down. The technology: - parking is either dicey or expensive, i.e. normal for La Jolla. Your best bet is the valet at the hotel, but while driving on Prospect keep your eyes open, and you might find a spot on the ocean side of the street. - the lounge consists of a large indoor place that is solid but with no outstanding features and a balcony that for me is much more exciting place. High tables on the balcony are for drinks only, the rest of the balcony on busy days is reserved for patrons planning to have a dinner. - the most gorgeous views and photo opportunities are at the far (closest to the ocean) end of the balcony. These are also the chilliest ones, as there is no heating at the very end, and no glass to protect the diners from the sea breeze that is quite common in the evening hours. The tables closer to the entrance and adjacent to the wall are warmer. So dress appropriately, have a very good (and expensive) dinner and catch that elusive "green flash" if there are no clouds on the horizon. We did. read more
