Came here for happy hour to catch the sunset. Parking was the usual annoying situation you expect anywhere in DTLJ, but once you're up on the rooftop, the views definitely make it worth the hassle. They have some happy hour specials that include basic apps and $12 margaritas. We ordered chips and guac and a margarita each. The chips and guac were solid overall, though the guac could've used a bit more salt. The salsa, unfortunately, kind of sucked. The margaritas were very strong, but not in a good way--more like straight tequila than a balanced margarita. I enjoy a strong drink as much as the next person, but these were just not well-executed. That said, the view is really the star here. We came on a day with great visibility, and the sunset was beautiful enough to make up for the mid drinks. Definitely a spot you come to for the scenery more than the food or cocktails.

Quaint rooftop bar with great views of La Jolla. Small menu with variety of flavors and choices. Our table had the blackened salmon, pesto pasta and piccata. Brittany was attentive and knowledgeable. They offered a churro dessert for the birthday boy, it came with ice cream, fruit and chocolate sauce drizzled on top.

Ernesto (the manager) greeted us right away and was so kind. Alex (our waiter) was very attentive and took care of us. The drinks were amazing and the ceviche was 10/10. We were celebrating my sister's birthday and couldn't have picked a better spot. I am from out of town but, will definitely be back. The staff was amazing. Thank you Alex for everything!

Birdseye Rooftop is a cozy spot with beautiful ocean views--especially at sunset, which really makes the whole experience. We were pleasantly surprised to be seated right away without a reservation, and since we were just stopping in for a quick snack and drinks, we knew what we wanted immediately. Unfortunately, service was a bit hit or miss. It took about 15 minutes for a server to come over, and we noticed another table seated after us had already been greeted and had their drinks. We ended up flagging someone down, and they did apologize for the delay. On the positive side, our server went out of his way when we asked about Coke Zero. Although they didn't have it initially, he managed to find a bottle for us, which was a really thoughtful touch and appreciated. When the food arrived, we realized we hadn't been given side plates or silverware, and after asking, we were brought a dirty sharing plate, which was disappointing. That said, the food itself was very good--the empanadas were delicious, and the salad, while simple, hit the spot. Overall, the atmosphere and location are hard to beat, but the inconsistent service brings the experience down a bit. I'd probably return for the views and a drink, but hope they tighten things up on the service side.

Great spot! We arrived post sunset - but I am sure the views must be spectacular! They had heaters put out for us. We had the entire place to ourself. Great bar and food was good. I enjoyed the cheese spread with nuts, calamari, Brussel sprouts and steak. The cocktails were amazing too - lot of depth in their taste. The servers were very kind and polite.

Two of their specialty cocktails at around $19-$20 a piece. One was returned bc it didn't taste right.

Came here in the late afternoon for a bite & drink with a view. I would have rated this two stars for the service and food but added an additional star for the view. This restaurant sits above a small boutique hotel and has a small dining area and bar that has a nice view of the water. We sat at the bar after being told all of the tables had reservations. Despite it being a small place and two and sometimes three bartenders on duty, we had to wave someone over to get drinks, also had to wave someone over to order food. Our food arrived and there was no cutlery so we had to wave someone over for cutlery. At no point did anyone ask if we needed anything, another drink, etc or how our food was. The food & specialty cocktails we tried were just mediocre, at least by my NY standards. The service was extremely slow & poor, especially for so small a place. At the end, we also had to waive someone down for the check. I wouldn't go back or recommend, but if you just have a drink and take in the view, it might be ok.

Great views in La Jolla. Stopped by for a quick drink and bite. The drinks are refreshing and well balanced. The carne asada fries are well seasoned and a big portion.

This is a great place for drinks, happy hour, group gatherings, and hangs. The drink drinks are amazing! I had the girl on prospect and that was incredibly refreshing. The shrimp ceviche was very tasty. The beef empanadas were good. Due to location and how wonderful the drinks are. It is a very busy place. So things did take some time which is understandable. Would love to go back and try some other drinks on their menu.

Really enjoyed Birdseye. The rooftop views are beautiful! I only had some of their cocktails, which were great, but the food I did see looked good. Staff were so kind and attentive. I'll definitely visit again when I'm in town.

IG @allysxn.eats | came here for happy hour & it did not disappoint! we got a margarita, aperol spritz, garlic parmesan fries, and chips w/ salsa/guac. standard and satisfying happy hour menu/drinks, with a great view of the water and good service!

    Trevor L.

Great service and good recs. Carne asada unique with the marinaded meat, the marg was really smooth and not like a typically sweet, salty mix drink. Pesto pasta super good, would go back just for that. It's a very social bar and everyone is chatting, no need for a jacket the layout isn't that cold on the balcony, great sunset view

Only good part was the drinks and the view.

Stopped by the rooftop bar at our hotel and was met with neutral, uninterested service from the start. The host ignored my question about other tables, and our server had awkward banter when we mentioned a small discount from the front desk. Drinks were good, but service was slow -- our chicken sandwich and fries took 30-40 minutes while others who sat after us got their food first. By the time ours came, it was lukewarm, so we took it to go - which was also met with another sarcastic comment. The only friendly person was the girl refilling water, who was actually attentive and smiling. Not worth the price or the "15% off" that barely covered the $5 split plate fee. The view or drinks did not balance out the slow and off putting service - wouldn't return.

For some reason so many places have been closing early in La Jolla at night. Not sure if it is because tourism is down or business is just slow? Service wasn't the best for not being very busy. Nice ambiance and cool view from the roof top. Not sure I would return.

The place was lively, but luck was on our side: one perfect booth remained for the four of us sweet seekers. We settled in and immediately starting gabbing (versus checking out the menu). George came over to take our order. Without even glancing at the dessert menu (a bold move, I'll admit), I asked for one of each dessert to share--paired, of course, with a couple glasses of Scarpetta Rosé bubbles (okay so I glanced at te wine menu). Priorities . What arrived was equal parts surprise and delight. First, a charming little glass jar filled with lightly whipped crème fraîche and topped with salted caramel--simple, elegant, and absolutely delicious. And then... the "hamburger." Cue the table going completely silent. Naturally, we had questions. Our server walked us through this masterpiece from the bottom up: a golden caramel cake "bun," topped with a chocolate-coated ice cream "patty," a delicate mango gelée "cheese," and even "pickles" made from matcha cake. Finished with a second warm cake layer and a touch of garnish we were too excited to fully catch--because at that point, we were already diving in. The contrast of warm cake, cool ice cream, and rich chocolate was nothing short of fantastic. Playful, unexpected, and genuinely delicious--exactly the kind of dessert experience you hope to stumble upon. Thank you, The Whaling Bar, for the sweet surprises. We'll absolutely be back--next time for martinis, and I've already been told the duck meatballs are not to be missed.

We made a reservation and although we arrived on time, we had to wait about 10 minutes to be seated. I agree with some of the other commenters when they say that the revolving fireplace needs some love. It has the look and feel of needing to be updated. Also, for it to be a "speakeasy" vibe, you could hear the loudness of the bar through the walls. It just kind of ruins the facade a little bit. Regardless, we enjoyed the novelty of being slowly admitted to the speakeasy on the opposite side. We were given seats and upon first glance it was a dark lit space with an old fashioned aesthetic. I was surprised to see how casual everyone was dressed- I assumed there was a dress code, but I guess flip flops made the cut ‍. It took a few minutes for our server to attend to us, and when he did you could tell he was slammed. We just didn't get the table side manner one was hoping for an establishment like this. Peeking at their drink menu, I found myself disappointed that much of their options had a lot of sweet or fruit juice ingredients. So, I went for their old fashioned. For the price, it was just okay. Another disappointing moment. In all, it wasn't terrible, but it just isn't worth the hype. Overpriced and mediocre drinks and a seemingly overworked staff didn't make for a memorable experience and ended up not being for us. Glad to have tried it...but look elsewhere if you've actually been to a speakeasy. This just doesn't live up to what it's trying to sell you.

We called to add a couple extra people, and then those people didn't show; they rolled with the punches. The table was set when we got there. Service throughout was friendly, prompt, over and above. But the food was the absolute star of the show. Literally everything was perfect. For shareable appetizers, we got both the trio and the mezze plate. It was basically hummus flights, with pita triangles and multicolored carrots. All the hummus types were delicious. But a special shout-out to the truffle hummus--it was divine. It was very truffle-y, but it was also very light and creamy. Somehow that's not a combo I expected. Next, I'm already a falafel fan, but good *Lord* their falafel was unreal. Do not forget to get their sourdough which was deliciously crispy on the outside with a brown butter wash. It was quite possibly the best sourdough we have had and well worth the extra stomach space. The frozen dirty martini was a bit overdiluted for our taste so we opted for a classic martini up, which was great. Their cocktail menu is fun and worth trying one or two. We also had some bad luck and the fresh Cacio e Pepe we ordered was inedibly salty. Sole was polite in letting us know how it is prepared and that the pecorino could be a bit salty, unfortunately we have had many variations in the past and were familiar. They may have generously over salted the water it was boiled in, or the fresh pasta itself was over salted. We did not want it comped, we just couldn't take more than a bite nor did we want to take it home. Needless to say they worked to have it removed anyway. We would've paid for it no problem. The service and food was fantastic otherwise. It was really thoughtful of her/them to remove it anyway. The drinks came without delay and even their manager would stop by to help out.
