The drive there was a bit grooling, due to a bike race. When we finally got there, we put the horse away in their stalls and found some port in the living room, Nice! The room was nice and clean, breakfast was wonderful, good coffee, Tom was most helpful in giving me safe trails to take my daughter, great wifi, and he had some wonderful guests! To put it in a nut shell...I want gift certificates for my birthday, Christmas, Mothers Day, V-day, you get the picture!! Thank you Tom!

They provide the absolute best service of any hotel I've ever been to. The staff seem genuinely happy to be there and to help out and the services they have are incredible (complimentary breakfast delivered to your room, wine hour(s), freshly baked cookies). We also forgot dog bowls and asked the front desk if they had anything we could use in the meantime. They ended up giving us dog bowls to use! Their crib was also available to use free of charge and the pet fee was super reasonable. The hotel itself isn't the most modern and chic, but it was clean, comfortable, and in a beautiful location. The only somewhat tricky part of staying here was the parking - it was about half a block or so away but the parking lot was often quite full and sometimes we had to park at the very far end of the lot which could be a little inconvenient but not the fault of the hotel by any means - just the nature of being smack dab in the middle of the main street of the city. We would 1000% stay here again and recommend it to everyone!

If you are looking for a place to book in Inverness or Point Reyes, you MUST book this place. It was worth every single penny. But, then...when we arrived late on Saturday night, spent the night and then the morning of Sunday, we wished we would have arrived earlier and stayed longer. The true magic lies in this place. We loved this house! every corner of it, it is a very comfortable place and your friends or group of people will feel like home. It is a very functional house, whenever you need something (like a bottle opener) you turned around and there you go, you find it. It's clean and organized plus the cleaning fee is included which makes your life easier. It worked really well for me, with a group of single people and a couple. They have the little things readily available that make for a better stay. Sometimes hostels forget basics, but not this one! They thought of everything. Historic old farmhouse with wonderful NPS interpretive history display covering a wall in the living room. Immaculate rooms and common areas. Wildlife: coveys of quail, momentary shadow of hawk chasing lizard. Dark skies. Why we won't go back: We, a married couple, occupied one of the rooms in one of the 4-unit structures. Each of these has a kitchen shared by four rooms. Two rooms share am separated bath and shower. In order of unpleasantness for us: 1. The double bed was too small; one of us kept falling off the edge while the other was squished against the wall all night. 2. Sharing the bathroom with unknown neighbors was awkward. 3. Going from building to building and into one's room required memorizing four separate keypad codes, one of which changed in the middle of our stay. Imagine having to remember all this when it's dark and you need to use the bathroom. 4. The main building has a big kitchen. Some things (like coffee and tea) are supplied. But it is difficult to figure out what is provided for guests and what is available to use. It is difficult to figure out how to cook one's meals when there are a dozen other guests with whom one must negotiate. It is slightly easier in the smaller kitchens. 5. Wi-fi was unreliable. Other than the too-small bed, the worst part of our stay was that someone took away our brown paper grocery bag after we unwittingly left it in the main building upon our arrival. There are mysterious kitchen protocols of where one is supposed to leave one's things, and I never did figure this out. You are supposed to mark your stuff, but we did not realize this until our last morning. When we could not find our food bag, we assumed we;d left it at home, so we did not mount a search until it was too late. We had squirreled away odds and ends of food for our hiking lunch, so we shrugged it off. But we had to drive to Olema for dinner. The first morning, I was very unhappy at not being able to find my coffee. I am not a morning person and hate loud commotion. I almost cried at having to make polite conversation while the neighbors were cooking strange-smelling foods. One kind soul dosed me on caffeine. If this were still a hostel and the price was $50/nite, all this might be fine. But the NPS clearly requires this concessionaire to set prices that compare to the AirB&Bs of Inverness - $200/night. So it is to Inverness that we will go next time.

The shower was also great after spending the day hiking, delivering hot water nearly instantly. Clean room. We got fish and chips at the restaurant one night but they were just okay. I marked the room down by one star because we had a lot of trouble with noise. Not because other guests were partying; they were just walking around doing their own thing in their room. We knew this because the walls were very thin and their conversations carried, plus the raised subfloor magnifies footsteps as if you are in an apartment below a roller derby match. The constant noise kept our dog on edge, plus the doors to the rooms stick badly and are loud to open. Our dog kept thinking someone was opening our door, and it honestly caught me that way a few times too. If you like an extra firm mattress, you'll be happy with these. Our room had two doubles and was pretty cramped. Okay for an old married couple but with parents and kids it would be annoying. I'm including a pic of the "kitchenette" because we couldn't find any before we booked. It's fine if you are just bringing leftovers back to reheat later, but we ended up mostly using our ice chest because the fridge was so tiny. They did have an ice machine so that helped with keeping the ice chest cool.

Here, it's all about the journey and not the destination. If making breakfast were the actual reason this place existed, it would have gone out of business long ago. They are dog-friendly, but no dogs (service dogs excluded) are allowed on the deck or inside the building. Speaking of the deck: a gentle reminder to those who have finished breakfast, have empty plates in front of them, and are still leisurely sipping their beverages while people stand around waiting for a table -- you are not renewing a lease! Please give others a chance to sit down and enjoy their breakfast. The deck is communal seating, not a waiting room. Once you've finished eating, consider letting someone else have a turn. Be kind. Be aware. And, most importantly, don't be those people.

We are incredibly lucky to have such a historic place perched high in the mountains. The setting is beautiful, the atmosphere is welcoming, and there is something special about taking a break there after a hike and enjoying the views. Large deck for sitting and dining. Large propane BBQ on the deck. Dining/sitting area near the BBQ. I loved going out there in the early morning to have coffee. Can see a multitude of wildlife on the deck. There is a nice kitchen inside. Most of the cooking implements are enclosed in a closet out of view. Fully stocked kitchen for cooking if one chooses so. The bed is elevated from the main sitting area. I love that you can coddle yourself to sleep in the comfy bed and have full view of the greenery outside. There are very large windows almost floor to ceiling. NO TV!!! Yeahhhh.. But there is a CD player and an assortment of CD's available. The bathroom has huge ceilings and heated slate floors. A very welcomed wood burning stove for the cool nights we were there. Outside a few yards from the cottage is a secluded area with a large hot tub can probably accommodate 4 people. We spent alot of time there. Eleanore invited us to go down to her garden to pick tomatoes for dinner, BBQ oysters! We got a couple of dozen from Hog Island. Definitely a fantastic relaxing few days at Lone Fir Cottage!

We've recently introduced a new generation to Lone Fir Cottage, and were able to experience it through fresh eyes: the excitement of exploring the gardens, finding the chicken coop; listening for owls after nightfall, and waking to a wide and peaceful quiet. For us older ones, the peace penetrates deeply, mitigating against months of city stress. Days can be spent just looking out the wall of windows into the treetops, playing games, or cooking. If we feel like venturing out, there's easy access to Bear Valley, Inverness or Point Reyes Seashore, trails, or town. And evenings, the comfort of a happy woodstove and of course, the hot tub. Bing and Eleanore are wonderful hosts, giving and warm; the beds are comfortable; and all here is well.
