Old, funky and cluttered place - came in on a Friday night and planned to stay another night there but couch surfed at a friend's place instead. The place has definitely seen better days - it did not look or smell like an establishment that charges almost $200/night to stay. No private bathrooms, and the one bathroom I used had a faucet fixture that had detached from the sink, with a handwritten sign indicating that the faucet needed to be held while using. The "lobby/main room area that you walk into from the main entry door is the living room of the proprietors, and is wall to wall stuff/junk. There was a ceramic bowl with a lid on it sitting on a side table that was covered in fruit flies and smelled like decomposing fruit. No breakfast at this bed and breakfast, however they have taped over the word "breakfast" on the signage out front. Likely the least expensive place to stay in the popular tourist town of Stinson Beach for very good reason... read more

We stayed in the crows nest, needed a room for two nights with our pup. It was very cluttered and needed a good cleaning, very nice view though. Appreciated the kindness of the hosts but unfortunately it was to messy and the lower floor bathroom was disgusting, and smelled of urine!! I should have known better, I read previous reviews on this B&B mentioning that it was dirty but thought that it could still be an interesting one to try. Wrong. This B&B is really dirty, the dust hasn't been cleaned in a while, my wife didn't stop sneezing because of it - despite some medicines - and my brother thought he'd get mycoses just by using the bathroom downstairs. Plus his bed was so bad that he barely slept and decided to get up at 7:00 am to get his back some relief. On top of that the landlady wasn't really nice, didn't show us the rooms or the house at all, and the breakfast wasn't good. DON'T SUPPORT THIS BUSINESS!!! Here is why: I'd give this place less than one star if I could. We decided to stay here last minute and I called to make sure they had a room. I spoke to Tony and he said they had a cabin in the back available. He asked for my name, but no credit card number. I told him we would be there in a half hour. When we got there Tony showed us our room and gave us the key. Said we could pay when the owners get back or in the morning, no big deal. I was very unimpressed with the room-dark and dirty. So much clutter! But we made the drive there, we weren't going to leave. We started getting ready to head to the beach, when there was a knock on our door. It was the owner. She was just letting us know she was around and we could pay whenever. We were going to pay on our way to the beach. She came by a few minutes later and asked if the refrigerator was working. I told her it was. A few minutes after that, we were just about to walk out the door, a man knocked on the door. He was very hostile from the beginning. Saying we need to pay now and that no place would give a key without getting payment first. He said he wasn't sure of we were deaf or not. Then he started getting threatening. Telling my boyfriend that if we didn't leave in 3 seconds, he was going to kick his ass. Then he started counting to 3. We gathered up our stuff as quickly as we could. He reached 3 and said it again, "I'm going to kick your ass in 3 seconds if you don't get out of here!" We took off as fast as we could and he followed us a little bit to the entrance. We probably should have talked to the owner or gotten his name (we assume it was John from the other reviews I read,) but we felt scared and wanted to get away from this place! I really enjoyed my stay here! It's cozy, unique, and eclectic. Just what I would have hoped for from Stinson Beach. I've heard stories my whole life about Stinson, and the "good ol days" when Garcia and the likes were experimenting with electric kool-aid acid tests and all the locals knew each other. These days the place is over run with the paris hilton fanclub and their requisite toy-sized dogs in bags, unless it's off season. The multi-million dollar beach houses have really ruined a true gem. As for my stay, it was pleasant and the innkeepers are super nice. The room was clean, and there were individual wrapped soaps in the shared bathroom (one for women and another for men). The breakfast was tasty and more elaborate than just muffins and eggs. The robes and slippers in the closet was a homey touch. The room we stayed in (the White room) is indeed very small, but two people and their luggage fit in it just fine. You don't go here to stay in the room! Go on one of the many awesome hikes through the gorgeous mountains if you can't think of anything else. Their patio is great too with a garden and eclectic decor, and a jacuzzi. Disgusting really -Mold, 5 kinds of toxic cleaners and detergent, etc. 2. You had many building code violations such as: fire code violations, unsafe plywood stacked in a main walkway, sketchy electrical work in rooms, many trip hazards in the outdoor spaces, and inadequate clearance spaces in the room/doorways 3. The photos and description of this place are not even remotely close to what it actually is. The entire place smells musty and moldy. It's dark, dusty, and quite honestly unsanitary. Our room was on the top floor, which was up 2 flights of steep, narrow, dark stairs with filthy, stained carpet. We were informed the bathroom was at the top of the first set of stairs and was shared with a permanent tenant. This was the first time it was disclosed we had a shared bathroom. The room itself smelled, was cluttered and dusty. There were 2 bath towels on the foot of the bed. They looked old and worn. The thought of sleeping there made my skin crawl. There were sketchy men roaming around the house and yard. The only saving grace this place had was when I told the owner we would not be staying there and wanted a refund there were no questions asked and she refunded my card immediately. It seemed from her reaction when I asked for a refund that this was not the first time it had happened. Bottom line avoid this place at all costs. read more

This place is quirky to say the least. The only good thing is the proximity to the beach. I would not stay here again. I had hoped that I might have a view of the ocean from my room. In fact I couldn't see anything at all because the window was covered by a tarp. The room was not aesthetically pleasing. The decor was mismatched and outdated. It seemed, as other people mentioned, like the stuff you might find at your grandmother's house. It was very cluttered. And to top it off there was a little sign that read "Tipping is not a place in China," which I found tacky and presumptuous. I had a private bathroom, but the shower head was awful. The water came out so hard it hurt, and it could not be adjusted. Also, there was not enough toilet paper. I ran out, and I was there less than 24 hours. The breakfast was not great. The living room, where it is served, was so cluttered that I had trouble finding the food. After several minutes I had only found the apples, and then the hostess showed me where the rest of the food was. I didn't feel comfortable sitting in such a cluttered place, so I ended up taking the food back to my room. The boiled eggs were so undercooked that the white was also runny, not just the yolk. There was some ham cooked with onions which was good. Other than that there was just bread. There was free WiFi, but it was a little weird that it was provided by a nearby hotel. Had I read the reviews first... It was awful. We left and went back home we were so disgusted by it. Mold on the windows and bathroom, and having to share one bathroom for four guests, and to put it mildly; it was a pig-sty, mold in the shower, and they should have considered changing the shower curtain years ago. They were fixing a deck all day so that we really couldn't even rest inside our room. And the room we had, "the crow's nest"... was not worth the money spent on it. Another thing noticed by my wife was the holes in the carpet stairs, and holes in the walls were not repaired; they were covered by seashells. But; after calling the b and b this morning to discuss our disappointment, the woman was apologetic and understood our predicament. They should sell the place and retire. This place is super quirky and fun. We stayed in the Crows Nest Room, which is by far the best. Ocean view patio, 1 queen bed, 1 full bed and a futon. We couldn't figure out which light switches worked and which ones didn't (there's at least6), which was entertaining. Alphonse and his wife are really sweet and very informative on fun activities to do around Stinson. Breakfast follows suit with the quirkiness, coffee was ice cold, but the Ham they made was delicious. All in all I would definitely stay here again. read more

This B&B is like being a guest in real, down to earth, authentic beach house. You share bathrooms. The pillow cases and sheets are fresh and clean and mismatched. The beds are cozy and there are quilts and blankets to spare. There are comfy mismatched chairs and sofas all over. Plenty of towels, books, board games, art, knick-knacks, driftwood and shell collections. Great jungle-like courtyards. The owners are excellent hosts and very familiar with the area. On thanksgiving we stayed there. 1) Hoarding, this place is like a place your grandma has when she is old, hoarding too much stuff and refuses to get rid of some. The yard is especially messy. 2) must share bathrooms with folks living in the house full-time. So you don't have your private bathroom, they are shared by guests and house owner. 3) OVERPRICED--we were charged $100+/night. 4) Nothing matches and at best semi-clean. I booked out the entire place for guests when I got married in SB. I really wish I could give them more stars, because they were really nice...but, there's two main problems with Redwood Haus... 1. One of our guests eyes were red because of the mold in her room. Everyone was unhappy with the lack of cleanliness. 2. One of our guests overheard the owner telling a random person that there was a wedding going on across the street at the community center and that she should crash it. NOT COOL. But, we had all the kids (about 15) from the wedding babysat in the common room of the Redwood Haus (even though most of the kid's parents were staying someplace else) and they were totally cool about it...which is why they get two stars. read more

First off, if your preferred type of bed and breakfast leans more towards the hotelish end, then sure, you don't want to stay here and you are the kind of person who gave these folks a poor review. But I LOVED it. My husband and I booked the Crow's Nest for our honeymoon, as we love Stinson Beach, didn't want to go too far from home (the east bay) and wanted to keep things relatively inexpensive. We showed up late after our reception, which the owners didn't mind at all- they even gifted us with a bottle of wine... very sweet. The house was very warm and inviting- very much a home. While I understand someone not liking the bathrooms with their collection of pre-used soaps and shampoos and such, I actually thought it was great. There were things I forgot to bring (like sunblock), things I got to try (like yummy-scented lotions) and most importantly, it isn't wasteful. Very novel for a hotel or BandB. The room was lovely- it looked just like the photos on their website and we slept really really well both nights, which we attribute both to uh... being newlyweds... as well as the big, cozy bed. =) Breakfast in the morning was just fine. We came down about a half an hour after it ended, but they'd left it out just for us, *smile*. And it was pretty darn good: hard-boiled eggs, potatoes and toast. And HOLY CRAP THEY HAD WHEAT-FREE BREAD!! I could have cried. Really. If you're an anti-glutenite, you know just how I felt. And their coffee was delish- a true sign of caring about your business and customers, if you ask me! We ate outside on their sweet garden patio... joined by their kitty, Merlot, who sat on my lap for nearly an hour. Before we hit the beach, they even offered us boogie and surfboards to take out, though we declined, as the water was effin' cold. My one and only "meh" relates to the eccletic nature of the decorations. Eccletic is wonderful, but my anti-clutter gene could have done with a few less artifacts. But, of course, this is someone's home, so I got over it. Basically it was like staying with some distant relatives in their fortunately situated house- it was cozy, inexpensive and we felt genuinely cared about. We can't wait to have a chance to go back and to bring some friends with us. read more

I called last minute in Marin for a "life break" from a hard day at work. The owner (husband) answered and sold me on a quiet room in the back because it was me, myself, and I and I didn't need much just a bed and QUIET! It was everything I expected from the reviews: European, cute, comfortable and adorable! It reminded me of my Grandparents but more hippie eccentric and I LOVED IT! It's perfect and out of the norm for me. Coffee served in the am after a perfect sunset evening and dinner at the Sand Dollar restaurant (walking distance from the beach and B&B). We just visited on Valentines Day Weekend. They were able to book us on a couple of days notice AND are cool with dogs. No deposit, nothing. I wish more places took this attitude. For this alone we will be back. I wasn't sure what to expect as I've only stayed at one other B&B before. As with some of the other comments made here, I was initially shocked by the environment. It wasn't sterile, it was like a lived in home. If you don't like that you may want to look around. For those of you like me who can appreciate and understand it, you will love it. We were treated to a great breakfast hard boiled eggs, potatoes, a seasoned chicken chunk dish as well as very delicious bread. It was a good meal to start the day of driving up the coast. My girlfriend and I enjoyed the experience and we will be back. read more

Location, location, location - and hey, the price is amazing too - not a lot of options in that area. Just steps from the glorious beach and right in the middle of town. Not for those looking for posh accoms, this is more like staying at your eclectic auntie's house. It had everything I needed, and was clean enough that I wasn't concerned about it. The pink room has a deck to call your own and lots of charm. Although the bathrooms are shared I didn't mind that as much as I might have as they were clean and had plenty of whatever was needed. It's not a quiet place as it is an old house but there's a good chance you will have worn yourself out on the beach all day and sleep like a baby anyways. I really liked the woman who runs it, and her husband is a character to say the least. I would return for sure. read more

I'm giving this 1 star because the owners were very nice. Other than that the place is a complete disaster. It is dirty, filthy and smelly. The carpets in the room, the stairs, the hallways, the breakfast room downstairs as well as in the bathrooms were filthy. The black sink in the downstairs bathroom hasn't been cleaned in I don't know how long. The shower in the first floor bathroom did not work properly and the shower in the bottom level bathroom in the tub was leaking all over the floor because of then inadequate placement of the shower curtain. The floor mats were wet at all times. The "kitchen" was so dirty that I did not want to touch anything let alone eat off the plates. The bread that was available was dry and hard, the strawberries were mouldy, the coffee lukewarm and old. As far as the bedroom is concerned, one bed was pretty comfortable, the other ones were too hard and to soft, respectively. The sheets smelled musty and dirty. The carpet was so dirty that we could only walk around with shoes on. There was a little sweeper apparatus in the room, maybe we were meant to clean beforehand! Half of the light switches didn't work properly and good luck figuring out the antiquated VCR. I'm not a frilly or high maintenance person, but basic quality must be supplied no matter how much money you pay to stay in a hotel. And at $180/night we were definitely expecting more. I love eclectic, funky places with quirks and personality. And maybe Redwood Haus used to be just that while still remaining a safe and sanitary place to stay. If that was once the case, sadly, it is far from what it is now. It smelled so badly throughout the house, and other than the clean sheets on the bed, our room had layers of dust and dirt covering everything (water glasses, coffee maker, etc). Given the state of the place, I was concerned about bedbugs and we contemplated just sleeping in our car instead of our room. The "breakfast" in the morning consisted of hot water & tea bags, freeze-dried minestrone soups (?), stale rice cakes with mayonnaise & peanut butter (?), bowls of rotting fruit and old, opened boxes of cereal (?). I feel badly for the owners who are an older couple who don't seem to have help running the place. The location is great, and I wish them all the best. But the online photos and description of the place don't ethically represent the actual current day situation. It's too bad, because with some deep cleaning and structural repairs, it could be restored to a cool, one of a kind place. read more

Horrible experience, the host John, should be ashamed of himself. The rules about dogs is unclear. This person John said he would waive the $50 pet deposit fee, I thanked him and he continued to be somewhat hostile and I felt very uncomfortable. After heading out briefly to get dinner and drinks, I decided I was too uncomfortable to stay. John did not give us a code to get back in to get my things and slammed the door. We had to get the code from some nice people who also happened to be staying there and were at the restaurant we went to. John seemed like he was on drugs or had some psychological issues. The location was great and we got to see a beautiful sunset, but for your own well being please do not stay here. I wanted to enjoy a great weekend with my family but it was cut short. I left because I wouldn't feel comfortable sleeping in the same house as this person. read more

We were excited to try this place despite the mold complaints, the official legal case against its owner, warnings of crappy breakfast, etc ... Made a reservation for 3 days over the long weekend for Valentine's Day. They called me back to confirm my res and everything. Wound up having to cancel one of the nights because of a scheduling conflict with the boyfriend, but they understood and seemed flexible, and made it clear that we were still on for the other 2. But then less than an hour before leaving for the nearly 2-hour drive there ... they called to say whoops, they just realized that they cancelled my whole reservation, not just that one night. Something about the wife writing in our new res and the husband ignoring. No apologies or anything, just the number of a nearby motel that seemed grossed-out when I explained that Redwoods Haus had recommended them in light of their screwup. (They were full, too.) Could've ruined our weekend had it not been for some crafty Yelping of nearby places, but still, WTF. A little notice and/or attentive listening would have been nice. Be careful about staying here -- double, even TRIPLE-check that you'll actually be accommodated please! read more

What can I say -- think before you book. It's not very clean, the dust made us all sneeze a lot, there's this random old guy that hangs out that reeks of cigarette smoke (but he's not staying there) and the place is crammed with stuff (inside and out). It's like visiting someone's grandparents' house where the grandpa & grandma are hoarders and they can't throw anything away, plus throw in dust, some dozens lamps from the 50s, 60s and 70s with power cords more combustible than recalled laptop cables, and one fire exit locked behind door number 1. I understand the decoration can be weird because it is so eclectic, but I thought I wouldn't mind for one night, but when you have so many objects in a place you have to make sure that they stay clean. I felt like I was staying in a crazy-hoarders house. There was junk in the closets and stuff in every drawer of the dresser and the room we stayed in smelled like cat poop. Had it not been a holiday we would have left and gone somewhere else but there weren't any other vacancies in town. The TV was green in color and the VCR didn't even work. Well this is truly a very weird place to stay, and it was not horrible, but I can understand other people's complaints. Lady of the house was odd, but not offensive in any way, kind of like staying at a friend's grandma's house. I didn't end up sleeping there after an all night post-wedding party in Bobo, but did stop in long enough to freshen up pre-wedding, and then arrived totally hung over post wedding the next a.m., hoping for the free breakfast and a nap before having to drive back over the hill. Ok, I hate writing negative reviews, but unfortunately I found there to be entirely false advertising on the website for this B&B so I wanted to share. The pics posted on the website are not reflective whatsoever of the state of the rooms I saw when I arrived to Redwoods Haus. I like eclectic/funky, but this place honestly felt unhygienic (not a fun stay given covid, etc.). There was clutter EVERYWHERE (on every surface, in every room), and there was a strange smell throughout the entire place. Upon arriving we also learned that we had to share a bathroom with a long-term tenant that lived on site-- this was never shared on the website or over the phone the numerous times I called to discuss my reservation. The staff were nice enough, but one of them made strange comments about my son (5 pos old) while we were there which did not sit right with me. They also didn't serve breakfast while we there as advertised on the website, but discounted the rooms to $120 due to this... but in my opinion that is far too much money for the room I stayed in. My father is also a building inspector, and this place had so many code violations were we joking about it while staying there. I would NOT recommend staying at the Redwoods Haus. read more

This place is awesome! It's a weird, cute little Bed and Breakfast right in the heart of Stinson beach and literally two blocks from the beach. Myself and my fiance have stayed at every place there is to stay in Stinson, and though I still love Ocean Court simply because of the small kitchens and the own-private-appartment feel, this place has it totally beat on affordability and funk. It isn't the most sterile option, obviously, since it's two people's home and cleaning up after a bunch of people and running everything isn't exactly easy for one older woman. To be honest, none of motels at Stinson are exceptionally clean. But the linens in our room were all laundry fresh, the room was vacuumed (if not dusted) and smelled pleasantly like perfume, cleaning liquid and ocean musk. It's a cozy and homey house, the style is vintage, eclectic and funky with tons of little bizarre knickknacks decorating the place. There's even a cat to make friends with while you stay. The owners are sweet and very down-to-earth. Staying here has the feel of just being a guest in someone's home, it's not very formal. Definitely no fake or forced customer-service attitude, so if you want to be treated like you just became King or Queen of Stinson beach this is not the place for you. Like I said, the owners will not hold your hand, but they are very helpful if you ask for it. They even offer complimentary transportation! They offer $55 for rooms during weekdays and off-season, which is really the best time to go to Stinson since this tiny town gets packed quick, and is easily the cheapest option in the town. They do accept cards, so I'm not sure what the issue was with the previous reviewer. They have complimentary breakfast (obviously), which when we stayed was fried herbed potatoes, hard-bolied eggs, toast and grapes. There is free coffee and tea available 24/7, definitely a money-saver. There are DVD-players and VCRs (with TONS of tapes available) in all the rooms, and cable TV. They are one of the few places in Stinson to offer complimentary internet, which is useful if you have to tie up some loose ends from back in the real world. There are five different rooms, three in the main house, and two more private ones in a separate unit in the back. We ended up staying in the latter, mostly because my fiance choose the one with the biggest TV (Men, sigh). The room we stayed in was small and cozy, with cute knickknacks and plenty of storage, and a stained glass dragon hanging on the wall. We could hear the waves at night which was very relaxing. My only complaint about the room was that the bathroom was not separate from the sleeping area, with only a curtain to block it. It's fine if you are a couple who is comfortable with each other, and you can always use the bathrooms in house itself as well. All the rooms have their own unique style, and we are looking forward to returning to try them all out. In terms of affordability and savings, this place is it. It's cheaper than Stinson Beach Motel, and has a much more welcoming feel BY FAR. If you want a unique and affordable experience, and don't mind the slightly musky grandmas's house atmosphere, stay here. read more

As someone said. This place is not for the faint of heart, my husband and I were looking for quirky and found it. Also, it was the only room available and we were a bit desperate. Our room was small, but okay. Lots of clutter which must make it very difficult to clean. Sharing the bathroom was no big deal (we live in Europe). I'm not sure I would've been so positive if I had to stay more than one night. The breakfast begin at 8:30 (which we found out after we had been sitting there since 8). So we thought there was just toast and coffee. Eventually scrambled eggs, potatoes and home made bread showed up. My girlfriend & I have visited Stinson Beach staying at the Redwoods Haus several times and always loved it. They offer recommendations for outings and local attractions. We have primarily enjoyed Point Reyes, hiking nearby trails & on the beach, surfing Bolinas, biking Ridgecrest Rd. and adjacent trails. Visitors from farther away tend to visit Muir Woods... there are many great attractions in the area, some seasonal. We prefer to barbecue in the state park, but there is also a grill on site. okay, maybe not as good as it gets, but they get 5 for originality, and cause i can't give them 4.5 stars, and they definitely deseerve to get rounded up. 5 stars in sig figs. this place is not your average bed and breakfast. it's bordering more on a hostel. and it's one of the better hostels i've ever stayed at. the big hiker's breakfast is decent, they have loads of eclecticism, they are helpful, friendly, generous, economic, know the area. and john will play is trumpet along with you if you can tickle the ivories some. it's a place to remember. read more

Not recommended for anyone from Walnut Creek (or SF-ers that might as well live in WC). This is a funky, european style bed and breakfast -- or a pension. not like the yuppie-fied over priced places you normally encounter in this neck of the woods. We loved it. The bedroom could have been cleaner, but it was bascially fine. The bathrooms were very clean. think of it more like a fabulous hostel rather than a snooty B&B. Breakfast is fabulous. it's inexpensive compared to other B&Bs. We'll definitely be back. And, please, if you don't like this kind of place, stay away from Stinson Beach -- the restaurants are way too expensive as it it. go to Monterey. read more
