Since I found myself in East Boston, I decided to walk into La Sultana Bakery because it was a super convenient stop by the Maverick Station on the Blue Line. They had a number of tables available for those who wanted to consume their purchase right away. Nothing was labeled, which makes it tough to order. No names, no prices. I went with a potato and chicken empanada, and an apple triangle pastry that was generously topped with sugar crystals. The savory was well filled, while apple shrank as cooked as always. Both were tasty. On another visit I tried a few other items. The pan de bono was a wider flatter version of the round bunuelos pequenos. I found that I prefer the former. read more

The food is so good Buttt the costumers service is terrible, Today I spend more than $20 and I asked for a small piece of lemon to go with my pork rinds, and two young women at the front refused, even though they usually give it to me. My friends and I popped into here to try some Colombian desserts. We had to get some Pastel De Arequipe, flan, boiled figs with arequipe, and a cookie with, you guessed it, more arequipe. They were unique with my favorite being the Pastel De Arequipe with the buttery layers and crystallized hard shell of sugar on top. The flan was more firm and had a sight citrus taste to it. Our biggest surprise was the boiled fig which was bland but also very sweet. Overall, it's an adorable locally owned shop that I highly suggest others to check out. The most authentic Latin bakery that I have seen in Boston right near Maverick station. They do everything from hot lunches to baked goods to sweet cakes. Everything is also very affordable. The min charge to pay by card is $10. I got a cheese croissant and it was filled with cheese. I'll be back to try the empanadas and some other savoury goods. You can takeout or dine in. We are tourists to Boston, a Spaniard and a Mexican couple, so obvs our level of Colombian knowledge isn't great. With that said, the place was very lively, and you can tell it's a staple to this neighborhood. Everyone came in for breakfast, which was quickly provided. Prices were very fair for the quality of items. The gals behind the counter are clearly hard workers. My husband ordered one of their tamales, and that thing could feed a family of 3. He really liked it but I couldn't get past the texture. We tried empanadas and like a cheese pastry, all very good. The ambiance was very simple but cafeteria style, which helps to meet new people. What a treat to have this spot near our AirBnB outside Boston! So many delicious options including buñuelos, empanadas, and pastries of all kinds. The employees default to Spanish but when they could tell I was reaching my limits they were happy to help me in English. First of all you should tell your customers that you are going to charge them 15 cents for the plastic bag they used to pack your bread, I found this very dishonest and this is a way of stealing from your customers. The tip should be voluntary, the staff keep mentioning the tip at the end of your payment like if this is "an obligation", this made me feel uncomfortable and I found this very inappropriate. Although the bakery was very busy the sales person waited until I enter the amount of my tip and was looking at the screen like judging how much I was going to leave her. Sadly the "Pan the Bono" didn't have enough cheese and it'll was tasteless and the "Pastelito de Guayaba y Queso" the dough in the middle of the pastelito was completely uncooked, this is unacceptable for a baker. At the end I paid almost $40.00 for bread that end up in the trash. I have been a customer since they opened the first bakery in Chelsea and also the one in East Boston but please make a note: I WILL NEVER GO BACK TO THIS BAKERY AND I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS BAKERY, THEY ARE WAY TOO MANY COLOMBIAN BAKERIES, RESTAURANTS AND CAFFE SHOPS IN TOWN AND LA SULTANA NEED TO ACKNOWLEDGE THIS FIRST AND CONSIDER MAKING SOME CHANGES.... I recently ordered a tres leches cake from La Sultana. The ordering was easy, my family member had no issues with pick up and the cake (most importantly) was delicious. While I have not yet tried them myself, I hear the empanadas are the best in Boston. Looking forward to a taste sometime soon. read more

I was excited to have a bakery so close by to where I work, so I went by. Everything looked good, but nothing was labeled. No names or prices on anything. The only sign in the store said "$10 Credit/Debit Minimum". I bought some cream horns and a slice of cake, which turned out to be tres leches. The cake was fantastic, but super wet. You could probably drink it with a straw. I wouldn't be surprised if it was a quatro or cinco leches cake, it was soaked to the point it was leaking out of the plastic container. Very very wet, but really good. Cream horns were okay, nothing special. My feedback would be to put up signs, with the prices! Especially if there's a store minimum. read more

I make it a point to always visit when I'm in town! I live two states away and can honestly say I have not had better empanada's! The food and sweets here are delicious. You can tell it is always made fresh & made with love. I always stop in for a few things before driving home. I've also got catering from la sultana for a baby shower & it was a hit! The customer service is fast and efficient! The employees are so nice & give great recommendations! The orange juice is freshly squeezed which is a great addition. Came across this little Bakery @ 6:30am Saturday morning, after a long night of Ubering around the city of Boston. Needed some strong coffee, a pick me up bite to eat, something other then Dunkin' Donuts. This was the only place opened around the immediate area. Cafe Con Leche was strong and delishhh. Got a tiramisu, slice of flan and an arepa to go. Will update this review once I try them Most international food joints come stocked with rude employees that act impatient in helping a customer who is not from their country. But the service ladies at this place were extremely helpful and were very nice to me, seeing as I was unsure of what some food items were. So, A+ for that! Definitely would feel welcomed to come back! Also, they have a $10 minimum for debit/credit card use. So bring cash if you're looking to just grab a coffee (cafe con leche). I only had my debit card on me. Ordered a large coffee and a slice of flan but that wasn't enough since it had to be $10. Shocked to see how low their prices are! Was able to get an arepa, piece of tiramisu cake and still hadn't hit the mark yet -- it came to $9.10 + gave a $1.00 tip so I didn't need to add another piece of cake to my waist line this summer. lol. I came here on a whim and ordered up to $10 worth of food to meet the minimum for card transactions and it was worth it!! I got empanadas, cheesy bread, another bakery item, and a coffee for about $11 so you get a lot of items for a good price. The service was quick and there was plenty of seatings. Customer service is not what used to be. My last two recent experiences were devastating. I had placed an order around christmas and paid for in advance. (70.00) When I picked up the order was incomplete. They claimed they could not fulfill the order after I had checked and had confirm they had items in advance. They refused to refund me for the remainder. I was forced to make a $30 purchase of items I did not want. I agreed out of respect for the line of 10 ppl behind me. I stopped in while exploring the neighborhood yesterday and got a big pastry for only $3!!! That was good enough, but I left it in my bag during a 4 hour train ride and am eating it 24 hours later. It is delicious. I don't know how they caramelize the sugar on the bottom so perfectly but hats off to them. 3.5 stars Amazing Latin bakery in the heart of East Boston's Maverick Square. They have one of the best Tres Leches cakes I've had in memory as well as harder to find items like Arepa de Maiz which is a sweet corn cake that is usually topped with cheese. Almost like a giant corn muffin. So why the 3 stars? I ordered a Tres Leches cake for a birthday and was given a totally different cake when I picked it up. When I called to order I had to read my credit card at least 6 times over the phone because of language issues. I imagine language issues were also the reason for my cake getting mixed up as well. Either way I would definitely recommend and would surely return soon. read more

They are super friendly, first of all. I was afraid of language barriers because I'm blind & only speak English & can't see the menu. No worries! The staff were professional, described everything perfectly and took my questions without hesitation. They even helped me find a place to park my wheelchair and eat a yummy cheesy croissant. They have lots of sweets & savory pastries to drool over but ALSO a hot bar with what looks like tasty meats, papusas and stuff. I hadn't thought to ask about anything beyond basic bakery stuff. The guy across the table (the seating is at long tables that have stools and are slightly elevated) from me had something yummy including beans. So next time I'm gonna try that section of the menu. They have a $10 minimum for card use, so plan your cash/card usage accordingly. Tres Leches Cake..If you've never had it, go here and have the authentic! Sooo good. It was probably the second piece I've ever had of it in my life but it was out of this world. The piece was huge and for only $2.50 you could have a couple dessert servings. Also, try the chocolate mousse cake. A cookie crumb bottom with a chocolate layer, then some shaved chocolate and a vanilla layer, then more chunky chocolate pieces on top. A real frenzy on a plate! I didn't expect the huge assortment of desserts. Cheesecakes, cookies, tarts, everything looked scrumptious. They even have whole cakes if you need for an occasion. They have a limited selection of hot Colombian pinxtos too. On a seperate trip I was excited to see chocolate and vanilla cupcakes! I got one of each. For $1 each it was a deal. However they are kind of generic tasting, like you get at most bakeries. They are decorated very cute with plastic kiddie decorations and colored airbrush frosting on some. I'll be sticking to the Tres Leches for my cake needs! The bakery is located right outside the new Maverick station, sandwiched between a bar and taco joint. I found La Sultana Bakery randomly when I went one day to the Massdot offices in East Boston, and I have to say they got me from day one. I keep trying new things every time I go there, but the Empanadas are still my favorite items from their menu, and I can't tell you, exactly with words how delicious and tasty they are. Whether you have the beef, chicken or plantain empanadas, you will give to you a real pleasure. Crispy, warm, with the inside (beef, or chicken) soft, well prepared and cooked. Thick, pan fried until lightly browned, silky interior that melted in my mouth with the gooey cheese Torta de elote - mmmm! a delicious grilled disc of corn bread studded with sweet kernels and sinfully slathered with several slaps of butter, a perfect marriage of sweet and salty Pastelito de guayaba - MMMMM! a HUGE pastry consisting of an extremely flaky crust (probably 99% butter and lard - yah!) that was filled with a wonderful guava paste that went perfectly with my cup of strong Columbian coffee...I could only find these guava pastries in my South Florida hood until NOW!
