It seems the safe Mexican market to shop. I first went there with Mr. Perez from Starfrutas down the block and was impressed by the variety of produce. That said, you might need to pick and choose carefully They have a deli "Cocina" where you can get packaged salads, or cooked items like burritos and tacos. This first time on my own, I ordered two carne asada tacos and a large Jamaica drink. The conversation was in Espanglés/Spanglish but they seem okay with English, if you do that, though not everyone might be at the same level. They had quite a few working the deli area and they worked through the line quickly. You pay for the food at the cash registers toward the entrance/exit, and there is a seating area around the corner toward Yosemite Avenue. Service was friendly but the tacos' tortillas fell apart as soon as I lifted them, as if they hadn't been fried. I don't usually eat tacos with a spoon but that's practically what had to be done. The worst customer service experience of my life in the food service area and at the register. First of all the lady was upset she was working or something. She had a attitude with everyone and made me want to leave but i needed the carnitas to feed guest at my house so i put up with it but i felt like throwing my food at her for the attitude she had not just with me but with other people before me. Then I'm in line at the register and the girls are not train or anything to deal with customers like the owner just places anyone anywhere and they look afraid or something i got this weird vibe from them like the actors on the movie GET OUT and they didn't bag my groceries like I'm just supposed to carry everything out. I don't think I will be back to this place just because of the customer service. read more

I have been a customer of this yummy little gem since we moved here in1998 and they were located in that tiny store on main. The sons have done a fabulous job. The food counter is delicious although sometimes the tamales tend to be a little in the salty side everything else is delicious. The meat market is always clean and tidy with a lot of grey prices. My go to for skirt steak even cheaper than Costco with what appears to be the same quality. I'm so sorry that the person with the negative review felt that way. I so disagree with the negative postings. The place is great. I have never experienced an issue with service, friendliness and their offerings and I don't speak Spanish. It helps to understand the culture and be patient. They are the best in town and I've tried most. This is my go to place for shopping, take away food and the bakery items. They didn't bag my groceries, but they bagged the next young woman's items. The mini carts were filthy. And their produce is bruised and the service was mediocre. While I'm aware that Yelp reviews aren't as prevalent in Manteca as they are in other cities/towns, I am surprised this place has not been reviewed! This supermarket isn't that big but it definitely has everything you need. They carry the typical Latino groceries (vegetables, can goods, drinks...) and have a fresh meat section all the way in the back on the right hand side. There is also a small selection of pan dulce which I was happy to find. But before I could grab any pan dulce I noticed the hot food section just behind the cash registers. I ate two of the best tacos I have ever had. One carne asada and the other al pastor. The tacos were only $1.19 and were over flowing with meat...and the meat was delicious. Part of me wonders if maybe someone new was working in the kitchen because with every bite meat was just falling off of the taco and I could hardly taste the tortilla (just the way I like it). I also had a pork tamale for $1.50 which was also very delicious. And their chips and salsa have a very fresh taste...the chips alone are delicious. If the rest of their food is as good as their tacos then I have found my new spot. I look forward to coming back and I encourage anyone to stop by and order a couple of tacos. I'll update my review upon my return...and if their other food is as good as the tacos I will give them 5 solid stars! read more

I use to go to there store on Main street prior to them moving to this "bigger" location. Now it seems that there standards have gone down even more. The store is still very very overcrowded with supplies and goods. The produce is awful, I wish I had taken a picture of the rotting habaneros and the very overripe fruits and vegetables. The meat department is okay. Only reason I go to La Altena is for their fresh meats and cheese. I do however wish they used gloves after handling several different types of meat/fish. I request who ever is helping me handle the meat with a bag over his hand. There isn't many Mexican/Hispanic groceries in town, but overall they are the "best" in town. However, if I really need my fix, I drive a bit out to Tracy and go to Mi Pueblo. read more

Best super burrito ever had put some hot sauce on my baby good store really good service

I bought the taco meat on May 4th. I asked him to season it for me. I came straight home and put the meat in my fridge and didn't touch it until Saturday evening when we wanted to bbq for Cinco de Mayo. When I opened the bag and put the meat in a pan, I saw a MAGGOT!!!! I was disgusted!! I didn't save the receipt because i wasnt planning on returning it. So now I'm out $20. I went in to super Alteña market to get some bakery items when I came up to the register to pay she charge me everything and told me the total I use EBT but there still was balance of five dollars left to pay with cash. I asked her what is that for five dollars she pulled out of a can of Small axe I told her it was not mine I don't want it I don't know where you got it from but please Take that off. She insisted that she can't because it is all together even though I have not paid for anything yet I could have walked out of the store without getting anything but I really thought she would just cancel the small thing of X. Went in to get a steak super burrito, waited a long time to get my order taken. When I got home to eat my burrito took one bite and was not satisfied with the burrito. My steak meat was not fully cooked the meat had a weird taste to it had chunks of fat in it, had no sauce in it had more rice and beans than meat just not what I wanted.
