There has been so much hype for La Tavernetta 29 as a "local spot," but I think social media spoiled it. The line was extremely long, but I saw it moving quickly so thought it wouldn't be bad. It turns out that they seat a round of tables at a time and then stop. During this pause, there's numerous empty tables inside the restaurant. I don't understand their process, but I was near the front of the line and didn't move for an hour while people were leaving. If I knew it was going to take an hour, I would've left sooner. Once we finally got seated, it took almost another hour for our food. My husband's meal also came out 5-10 minutes before mine, so we had to awkwardly wait. I ordered the Carbonara (€12) while he ordered the Penne Alla Vodka (€10). I also wanted the Artichoke, which never came out. But kind of didn't want it anymore with how long we waited and the pasta was very filling. While the food was good, large portions, and affordable, the wait was absolutely ridiculous. It just didn't make sense to keep people waiting when there were open tables. If you're lucky enough to not have a wait, then this spot hits. But if you see a line, don't bother and go to the many other restaurants in the neighborhood. read more

Inside and outside tables -- we sat inside and it was a bit tight as many restaurants are. Service was good -- but this is not the place for a long, relaxing two hour meal as they keep it moving. We loved the "Roman Chicken" (we call it chicken cacciatori in the US), the Mussels, salad, and pistachio cake also good. The good, the bad and the ugly. We ordered the lamb which was tasty but full of crushed tiny bones that was hard to eat. The zucchini had a great charred taste that was likely cooked over open flames. The caprese salad was decent. All the food came out very quickly. However, they did not have the panna cotta or cheesecake but promoted different desserts. Trying to be nice I accepted his recommendation. Toooo sweet. After 2 bites could not finish. Hubbies's dessert was a type of cake that was too dry. The tables and chairs are so tight, people had to constantly pull their chairs in. To pay your bill, you need to go up to the waiter and ask for your bill, where he'll give you a number. Take this number to the cashier, otherwise, you'll wait forever expecting them to come to you. Also, in Italy there are "coperto" /service charges averaging around €2 per person. My final advice is to take recommendations with a grain of salt because their job is to sell and they don't necessarily know your taste. Lesson learned for me. I waited 20 mins in line before they opened and 20 mins after opening before I was let in . I was first in line. Another single gentleman was behind me, and then a family of four however, the waiter insisted that me and a stranger share a table. I thought no problem with the higher reviews that place is probably going to get super busy but for the entire 1.5 hrs there were two empty tables beside us. I ordered the famous carbonara this dish was beyond a letdown. It took 25 minutes to come out which I don't mind at all but the sauce so basically I had scrambled egg pasta with bacon on top. I ordered the oxtail stew as my second course after tasting the pasta I didn't want to risk not liking the second dish so I canceled it and instead took my pasta with me to possibly doctor it up. I had the chicken Parmesan which may have been the best I have ever had. Thin slices of chicken with a lightly battered outside. Crusted cheese all around the edges. Outstanding! Somehow a shorts YouTube video of this place showed up on my feed, the food looked so good I had to go find it and I was not disappointed. They don't take reservations so we showed up just before they opened at 17:30, we were glad we did because some tables were already seated. Got in right away, quick greetings from the staff, menus in hand we ordered a bottle of wine and browse through the menu, we were starving and It was hard to decide what to order, we finally settled for the typical dishes of lasagna, carbornara and seafood risotto. Everything tasted sooo good and homemade-like, good portions, 3 plates for 2 ppl was more than enough to fill our empty bellies. I am shocked when I read these reviews wondering if I went to the same place as them! First red flag was being rushed by the waiter as every other establishment I've been to allows you to take your time. I had the lasagna which was okay and my husband had the arrabbiata pasta which tasted like it was from a jar. We landed at Tavernetta 29 on the last night of our trip at the recommendation of a family friend, and we're able to make a reservation the same afternoon. As we sat at dinner reminiscing on our time in Italy, I asked everyone their favorite meal of the trip... however, those answers quickly changed after we had our absolutely INCREDIBLE dinner here! We opted to sit outside in the piazza, where four of the neighbor restaurants have dining areas clustered, making for a fun ambiance of people (and food!) watching. We started with a bottle of house white wine and the best bread we had all trip. They brought olive oil, balsamic and Parmesan (the only restaurant to do this), which was appreciated for dipping. Our family enjoyed cacio e pepe (made with rigatoni), carbonara, chicken parmesan and veal scallopini--each member absolutely raving about their dish, and others that they sampled! This restaurant was by far the most "local" and "authentic" feeling we experienced, and all staff was friendly, attentive and efficient. Hidden in a busy alley amongst other taverns/restaurants and shops equally unique, one has to really look . As if searching for a treasure , reminding me of the fable story of Pinocchio . (Almost taking back in time ).. The smiley owner Tony ´s greeting is obvious that anyone is in for a pleasant experience. From its unique decor , and the smell of the food and intimate setting it's no wonder lines are full.. ( so reservation is a must). This place gets very crowded and is very popular. My only complaint was that, in a summer of record heat, it was 'close' smelling. But Trastavere is in general. Lots of people all the time, and little air flow. I would not give 4 stars for 'ambiance' [AI did that above]. This place is authentically lots of tables tucked in corners, but it was unpretentious and real. No doubt the chefs know what they are doing, just be prepared to be rather tightly seated. Everything was EXCELLENT. You are quickly greeted with fresh homemade bread and olive oil. The seafood appetizer was simple and light yet so so delicious. The steak came out sizzling in the pan and was the most tender and delicious steak I may have ever had in my life. Seriously, if you're a steak lover, you will not be disappointed. While the average review score is somewhat high, some of the other reviews have noted some red flags in food quality. Sat outside and ordered a glass of house white wine, barely palatable. The bread was also tasteless and soft. Ordered the caprese salad and it was the worst of my life. A few tiny bits of wilted basil, tomatoes with the butts and round skins still on, some random cheese other than mozzarella, no olive oil and no balsamic added. Just horrendous. Main course was veal with a lemon sauce... while decent flavor it was poorly plated with soggy roast potatoes and a few random veggies. This restaurant we passed by many times on our way into the City as it was a few steps away from our hotel, but for some reason never really looked at it until we were too tired from our daily walks to look for a restaurant to eat at and the hotel clerk suggested it. Did we feel like dummies for not eating here sooner! Incredible, friendly service and even though our server did not speak English, we got by with our broken Italian, a mix of Spanish and his limited English. He recommended dishes and kept checking in on us to see if we wanted more water, bread, etc. But the food, oh my gosh, was just incredible and delicious and had plenty of variety to choose from!
