We stopped in for dinner towards the end of our trip, after a long day of walking through the city. We were famished, and I originally said I wasn't going to drink with my meal, but then my husband ordered a glass of red and it looked so good that I asked our waiter to bring me one, as well. He actually took the time to ask me what I was thinking of getting for my main and then pulled a bottle of red for me off of that. So my main? It was the zucchini risotto (€18), and my husband ordered the Gnocco Amatriciana (€15). We settled in with our glasses of red and the basket of bread (served with a side of olive oil and a side of a red pepper butter) while we enjoyed people-watching around the neighborhood. The outdoor patio wasn't huge but it was comfortable, and our table was tucked away in a corner so we had a view of the cobblestone streets without being on display ourselves. The risotto was fantastic. Creamy and a bit tangy, with semi-crispy bits of zucchini on top, the risotto itself was perfectly cooked and worked really well with the other elements in the bowl. I'm not ashamed to say that I put a hurtin' on that bowl and polished it off in record time. My husband loved the flavor of his gnocco, and was mostly pleased with the amatriciana sauce; his only complaint was that they blended the sauce before pouring it over the gnocco, which meant he didn't get the toothsome bites of guanciale or tomato. It didn't hurt the flavor of the dish at all, in his opinion, but he did say he would have preferred a chunkier sauce. I guess chunks aren't part of their aesthetic. Though we were both full at that point, we decided to share an order of tiramisu (€9). It was a bigger serving than either of us expected, and gave us a subtle sugar kick, without being too sweet. There were cookie crumbles on top, which I really enjoyed, as it gave another texture to the smooth layers of the tiramisu. I really wish we could have gone back for another meal before leaving, but we just ran out of time (and stomach space, there's only so much I can eat in a day!) Highly recommend this spot if you're in the area, though!

When we visited, there was a line about 15 people deep out the door, but it moved reasonably quickly. They offer a wide range of unique flavors -- things like rosemary, lavender, and other creative combinations you don't usually see. It makes for a fun experience trying something different. All the flavors we tried were good, and overall the gelato was excellent. We've had some incredible gelato elsewhere in Italy, but this was still very enjoyable. Worth stopping in if you're in San Gimignano. Grab some and enjoy by the well in the center of the piazza.

You can get pizza but you can a whole range of Italian dishes as well. San Marco is a midrange pizza-and-everything-else place in Ludovisi. Ludovisi has tons of upscale expensive and worth every penny restaurants ... And tons of coffee-at-the-counter-or-at-a-sidewalk-table utility cafes. Both types of establishment are wonderful. Midrange places are harder to find. San Marco shows that the middle of the road can be a great place to be. * * * San Marco is actually two adjoining restaurants right next to each other. They get a gigantic businessmen's lunch business. (There are all sorts of banks and foundations in the neighborhood.) So at lunchtime - both sides of the establishment are packed. At night, they close the right one and only open the left one. That restaurant has a large sidewalk space and then multiple rooms one after the other inside. So even at half capacity, they can feed a lot of people. I was originally put off when in the middle of my meal, A large tour bus parked in front of the restaurant and about sixty people got out to eat. This is normally a huge red flag for me. This is one of the few cases I have found where having a tour bus business is NOT a sign of mediocrity. When I thought about it - I already knew that local businessmen who know their Italian food flock to this place in droves for lunch. And the establishment certainly has the room to feed several tour busses. The rest of the crowd around me was locals. So I turned off my "Tour-Bus-Alert-Alarm" and just enjoyed life. I got a five star meal out of it so I can't complain. * * * It doesn't matter that I had sausages and peppers. For what it is worth, I have yet to find an American style "Italian Sausage" anywhere in Rome - and I have had plenty of sausage. Maybe the fennel based sausages we get in the States are a Neapolitan or Southern Italian thing. The sausage I had was the texture of an Italian sausage but with the plain simplicity of an English banger. What differentiated it was a) an amazing char job on the sausage b) pork that was far tastier than any pork you get in a sausage in the U.S. And by that I mean pork that tastes like pig. C) really really good peppers did not hurt the dish, and fresh arugula goes a long way to counteracting the fat in your sausage. d) add charred rye bread to soak up the juices. I was a happy boy. * * * Why do I say that it doesn't matter that I had sausages and peppers? Because the menu at San Marco is absitively posolutely ginormous. It is huge. Pages and pages of pizza. Pages and pages of non-pizza. There is not a common Roman dish you can think of that is not on their menu some place. So the odds of you coming here and getting sausage and peppers is less than a jillion to one. But plenty of people like the other stuff on the menu. Frankly, I am going back to this establishment the day after I write this review because I saw a jillion other things I wanted to have. Look at the other Yelp reviews and you will see praise for many other dishes besides the sausages. Pizza gets a lot of love. * * * I found amazing things to eat all over this fantastic city. I encourage you to eat in as many different places as you can. (Write Yelp reviews about them while you are at it. Nudge. Nudge.) But if for some reason, you just had to eat at San Marco and only San Marco for your entire stay. You would not do badly. You certainly would not run out of new things to experience.

The standout for us was the pizza with guanciale and red onions--the meaty savoriness of the guanciale paired perfectly with the mozzarella and Parmigiano Reggiano. Everything we tried was high quality, including the pastas, the Bruschetta Completa (prosciutto, mozzarella, and tomatoes), and the desserts. Both the panna cotta and tiramisu were excellent. It's clearly a local favorite as well as a tourist spot, which is always a great sign. They also do a great job with carry-out if you want a quiet night in. Highly recommended!

It tunneled its way to the bottom of the cone and all of the chocolate prisoners made a mad escape through the very end of the cone. My shirt and my jeans were completely covered with large pools of chocolate from navel to knee. * * * Wearing chocolate like that is a Badge of Honor. It shows you have really been there. The texture was incredibly creamy & smooth, and the flavors had this rich, honest depth that made each bite feel a bit special. The panna added just the right touch without overwhelming anything -- it all came together beautifully. One of those gelato moments that stays with you long after the trip. A spot I'd happily go out of my way for again.
