Carbonara

Shocked by the news reviews!! This was the worst meal we've had in Italy and the service was so awful. I felt bad, everyone kept looking around, asking for the checks numerous times (we had to ask 4 times). Our seafood was really "off" tasting and the meals we got were wrong, I put my used for in my pasta before realizing my husbands entree was wrong and we called a server over once he surfaced again and he took both entrees and took them to the table where they were meant to go! I had my used fork in the dish!! Our entrees were brought over about 10 minutes later and the bacon in my pasta was chewy grizzle. Tourist trap and a waste of $50. Also.. they bring bread to the table without asking you and then charge you for it!! Save yourself a disappointing meal.

Ahh! We found this place as we were walking to get gelato and bookmarked it and came back for dinner. It was AMAZING. We even came back twice. First, their bread is one of the better table side breads I've had. They even have olive oil and balsamic vinegar on the table. The first day we had the gnocchi and tartufa pasta and both were absolutely amazing. The gnocchi was flavorful and the Mozzarella was really fresh. The mushroom truffle was not overpowering and it wasn't super heavy either, which was surprising. We loved it so much that we returned the next day and got the cacio e pepe, which was also rock solid. Such a good hole in the wall vibe. Staff spoke good English, so we were able to ensure everything was vegetarian.

Veal Marsala, very thin sliced lots of sauce

What a discovery! This was a place filled with what looked like government officials having lunch! All Italians in suits! Good sign I had a pasta Al Amatriciana and a veal Marsala. Both were very good! The Amatriciana was one of the BEST I've ever had! My girls risotto was great she says! House wine was great too! We will be back!

We stumbled upon this special home-style Italian restaurant on a side street of Rome. We knew nothing about it, and we read no reviews. We just plunged in. And, oh man, we are so glad we did. We tried the carbonara, the bolognese, and a mushroom steak. The carbonara was creamy and dreamy. The bolognese was smooth yet rustic and hearty. We shouldn't have done it, but we also added the mushroom steak, covered with chunky, home style mushrooms and a creamy gravy. The steak was like one of the top 5 steaks we've ever had. From this humble little spot with outdoor seating and pleasant, soft spoken service, great things came! If you're ever in Rome....

Steamed mussels and clams

Phenomenal. This restaurant is away from tourist hot spots - and that is why you should go here. Why waste your money on tourist traps? Italy is all about the food, you may as well go to the right spot and truly eat real Italian food, not what is made for the tourist. Mussels and clam appetizers served in a pot, a delicious and fresh way to start the meal. We each ordered a pasta dish: one was homemade pasta with pesto sauce and prawns .... oh my god. This is the dish to get. The other was a tomato garlic sauce with octopus, almost equally as good. We could have been done here and left very happy. Two fish dishes came next: sea bass and gilthead bream. Fresh, on the skin, flaky and moist. And the best way to finish it off? A complimentary limoncello. Wonderful service, delicious, fresh and authentic food. You can't go wrong here. *This review was part of a 10-day eating binge, I mean vacation with my mother. I visited La Locanda di Bacco during my last trip to Rome in 2014. It was delicious and since I was back in Rome for my honeymoon I wanted to take my husband. My husband and I tried to have dinner here on a Tuesday night, 05/16/23 and it is now closed! We were so disappointed!

Amazing experience here. My family and I tried the caprese for appetizer & shrimp risotto, truffle steak, and pesto homemade pasta with jumbo shrimp for our entrees. For dessert, we had creme brûlée, tiramisu, and ricotta cake. We thoroughly enjoyed every dish we ordered but my favorites were the truffle steak, shrimp risotto, and ricotta cake. We loved the truffle steak so much that we ordered another one! Most importantly, everything on the menu is super affordable. Also, the service here was the best we had in Rome and made our dining experience that much better. Most highly recommend.

Really great food and the service was fantastic. Close to our hotel too. My wife had the seafood pasta dish and we shared a really unique bruschetta that had 4 different spreads! Definitely recommend

We had a wonderful experience here tonight. Let me start by saying if you are in a time crunch this may not be the spot for you. But if you time to enjoy your meal and it like a local this is the spot for you. Friendly staff, great music and best wine prices I've seen in Rome. Food was phenomenal. Highly recommend.

Our favorite place of all in Rome. Prices are great, food is superb, and ambiance is great. We enjoyed their house red wine (so good), their clams and mussels were outta this world (appetizer), the gnocchi with mushrooms and truffles we were delicious, and my mom had the lasagna. There was a lot locals eating there, so clearly its worth it.

So simple yet so good. Tonarelli Cacio e pepe.

I searched around for the English menu or the English sign board outside advertising the specials. None. Good. Walk in, and all I could hear was Italian being spoken. Good. Look around, zero tourists except for the two that were with me. Great. Order the caccio y pepe, risotto alla pescatora, and spaghetti ala vongole. Superb. I found my local place in Rome.

Our hotel manager had suggested another restaurant, but I was apprehensive to try, but did later, more on that restaurant review in it's own post. I rather did what I should have done throughout the trip to, which is to search google for local reviews. This tactic I found to be much better than to trust American reviews for restaurants to visit from Youtube or even here, just because the American touristy taste tends to favor bland or Olive Garden style pseudo Italian. The real Italian taste is much different and something one needs to develop. I was familiar with European Italian food, as I had said before in other reviews that Mexico has better Italian food outside of Italy. Additionally, the good restaurants here in Italy do not open before 7 PM. If it does or if someone that looks foreign to Italy is outside trying to lure you in, it's a tourist restaurant with iffy flavor. At this restaurant my husband had the Lobster pasta and I had the spinach/ricotta ravioli, and we both were beyond satisfied. We also had the artichoke as an appetizer, and trusted the waiter with his suggestion for a bottle of wine. He must have been some genius because the wine went well with our meal. The ambience was cozy and very family oriented, however, the rain outside made it romantic for us. Another key point for this restaurant and it traditional flare was that they brought out the olive oil and red vinegar for our salad and of course olive oil for our wonderful home-made bread. I'm so glad we chose this place for those of us Americans who understand culinary cuisine.

They offer both indoor and outdoor seating, and if you're sitting outside on a sunny day, the staff is very attentive about adjusting the shades so you're comfortable. They will adjust even without you having to ask. I ordered the artichoke as an appetizer which was very good, I recommend getting this if they are in season. I also ordered the carbonara, and it was by far the best I had while in Rome perfectly creamy, rich, and full of flavor without being too heavy. You can really tell they focus on doing the classics right. What stood out beyond the food was how efficiently the staff operated. Despite how busy the restaurant gets, they move quickly and keep everything running smoothly, which made the whole experience even better. Overall, this is a must-visit spot if you're in Rome. Expect a wait, but it's 100% worth it for the quality of the food and service.

By the time we were seated, dozens of people were waiting behind us. We sipped an Aperol spritz and lemonade while we waited, chatting with fellow diners who raved about the restaurant. On a sweltering day, our kids were starting to struggle in the heat when the owner came outside and gave them mini pizzas breads. It was a thoughtful gesture that immediately made us feel welcome. Once seated, we ordered burrata, cacio e pepe, amatriciana pasta, pork chops, and fried artichokes. Everything was excellent, but the amatriciana was the standout--rich, savory, and unforgettable. The cacio e pepe was silky, the burrata fresh and creamy, the pork chops juicy, and the fried artichokes perfectly crisp. There's a reason people line up for Da Enzo. The food is exceptional, the atmosphere lively, and the hospitality remarkable. Without question, this was our best meal in Rome and one of our most memorable restaurant experiences.

Super pizza place with a lot of other great stuff on the menu…read more I looked with envy at the other tables who were enjoying spectacular plates of spaghetti with mussels. * * * That said, my pizza was a grand slam home run. Many of their pizzas are quite elaborate With all sorts of exotic ingredients. I went super simple. Gorgonzola. Mozzarella. That's it. Just enough Mozzarella to cut the Gorgonzola and make for a good melt. * * * If you have never had a gorgonzola pizza, you have never lived. Just sayin'. * * * P.S. My lovely wife got a Norwegian salmon pizza. The Norwegian salmon was stacked up high on her pizza As if she was in the World Series of Poker and she was a big winner. I have never seen so much salmon on one plate. After our meal, I made a discreet phone call to the Norwegian embassy in Rome asking them if they still had any salmon left. The woman at the embassy assured me the Norwegian salmon supply was fine. That surprises me given all the salmon that was on my wife's pizza.

Being new to Rome, and having walked 20k steps on our first day, there are an abundance of options a for dining. We wanted something classically Rome nearby to our hotel. The Yelp review of this restaurant was sufficiently positive to entice us. Being American, we appreciate the earlier-than-customary dining options. We arrived at 6pm without a reservation. We were seated immediately. The restaurant is intimate and very well staffed. The wood fire oven is front-and-center and the fresh mozzarella is prominent in display. We ordered a bottle of wine ... all options are very fairly priced. This is nice. We started with a Greek salad to share. It was unlike any American Greek salad ... and a really delight. It is early June but the tomatoes and peppers were ripe and crisp and really fresh. My wife ordered the Marguerite pizza; I opted for the Gorgonzola pizza (the effusive review on Yelp was compelling). Both were solid. We appreciate the thin crust and the crisp edged. The center of both, however, was doughy and somewhat undercooked. Looking around ... the restaurant was over 50% full even at this early hour. Most were Americans. We saw a good number of diners with pasta dishes ... and none were left unfinished. Sadly, we don't have any comparisons to weigh (yet). So, I cannot affirm any "best of" citations, it this is certainly a solid trattoria/pizzeria. The staff are attentive and the food served hot and fresh.
