I would never go back again. My friend & I were walking all day over Rome and I remembered eating at a great pizza restaurant in the area. Sadly this was not the one. We sat down at a nice outdoor table & ordered a half carafe of the house Pinot Grigio. Served at a lovely lukewarm temperature. Bread was placed on the table but I know from previous visits to other Rome restaurants it's not complimentary. 2.50€ per person. Did not touch it and asked them to take it away only to find it on our bill at the end. Luckily when paying the cashier & informing him we did not eat any bread the charge was removed from our bill. On to the food. My friend ordered the cacio e Pepe. It didn't look too appealing & the portion size seemed small. My bucatini with mussels was excessively oily. The size of the mussel meat in the shell was very small. I will say the staff were all very pleasant & the restaurant itself is nice looking. But I won't go back. read more

If you don't count hole in the wall pizza places with no place to sit down that will sell you pizza slices, Pizza places in Italy are full service restaurants. You can get pizza but you can a whole range of Italian dishes as well. San Marco is a midrange pizza-and-everything-else place in Ludovisi. Ludovisi has tons of upscale expensive and worth every penny restaurants ... And tons of coffee-at-the-counter-or-at-a-sidewalk-table utility cafes. Both types of establishment are wonderful. Midrange places are harder to find. San Marco shows that the middle of the road can be a great place to be. * * * San Marco is actually two adjoining restaurants right next to each other. They get a gigantic businessmen's lunch business. (There are all sorts of banks and foundations in the neighborhood.) So at lunchtime - both sides of the establishment are packed. At night, they close the right one and only open the left one. That restaurant has a large sidewalk space and then multiple rooms one after the other inside. So even at half capacity, they can feed a lot of people. I was originally put off when in the middle of my meal, A large tour bus parked in front of the restaurant and about sixty people got out to eat. This is normally a huge red flag for me. This is one of the few cases I have found where having a tour bus business is NOT a sign of mediocrity. When I thought about it - I already knew that local businessmen who know their Italian food flock to this place in droves for lunch. And the establishment certainly has the room to feed several tour busses. The rest of the crowd around me was locals. So I turned off my "Tour-Bus-Alert-Alarm" and just enjoyed life. I got a five star meal out of it so I can't complain. * * * It doesn't matter that I had sausages and peppers. For what it is worth, I have yet to find an American style "Italian Sausage" anywhere in Rome - and I have had plenty of sausage. Maybe the fennel based sausages we get in the States are a Neapolitan or Southern Italian thing. The sausage I had was the texture of an Italian sausage but with the plain simplicity of an English banger. What differentiated it was a) an amazing char job on the sausage b) pork that was far tastier than any pork you get in a sausage in the U.S. And by that I mean pork that tastes like pig. C) really really good peppers did not hurt the dish, and fresh arugula goes a long way to counteracting the fat in your sausage. d) add charred rye bread to soak up the juices. I was a happy boy. * * * Why do I say that it doesn't matter that I had sausages and peppers? Because the menu at San Marco is absitively posolutely ginormous. It is huge. Pages and pages of pizza. Pages and pages of non-pizza. There is not a common Roman dish you can think of that is not on their menu some place. So the odds of you coming here and getting sausage and peppers is less than a jillion to one. But plenty of people like the other stuff on the menu. Frankly, I am going back to this establishment the day after I write this review because I saw a jillion other things I wanted to have. Look at the other Yelp reviews and you will see praise for many other dishes besides the sausages. Pizza gets a lot of love. * * * I found amazing things to eat all over this fantastic city. I encourage you to eat in as many different places as you can. (Write Yelp reviews about them while you are at it. Nudge. Nudge.) But if for some reason, you just had to eat at San Marco and only San Marco for your entire stay. You would not do badly. You certainly would not run out of new things to experience. read more

During our 7-day stay, we (including a 10 and 12 year old) ate at San Marco Pizzeria at least four times. It was conveniently close to our hotel, but more importantly, it was delicious! The standout for us was the pizza with guanciale and red onions--the meaty savoriness of the guanciale paired perfectly with the mozzarella and Parmigiano Reggiano. Everything we tried was high quality, including the pastas, the Bruschetta Completa (prosciutto, mozzarella, and tomatoes), and the desserts. Both the panna cotta and tiramisu were excellent. It's clearly a local favorite as well as a tourist spot, which is always a great sign. They also do a great job with carry-out if you want a quiet night in. Highly recommended! read more

At the risk of sound cliché, San Marco was definitely a stand out among all the restaurants we've had the pleasure of dining in during our trip to Rome. The service, ambience, menu selection, pace of the meal, price, and deliciousness, all hit the mark for us. We started with some flatbread pizza, moved on to a pasta course, and had to get some steak. The steak Florentine really hit the spot perfectly cooked perfectly seared. Espresso and desserts were nice cherry on top. highly recommend. Note, upon presenting the check, our server indicated that the service charge was not included. In Rome first time n had landed 2 hrs before and was looking for a restaurant for quick Lunch as were really tired. The hotel staff recommended San Marco since it was a 2 min walk, Friendly welcoming staff. Sat outside as it was a gorgeous day, had the bread w spicy olive oil n balsamic vinegar. Was so good n a spicy kick to it. Had the Cesar salad w bits of bacon n chicken. Generous portion n shareable for 2 n tasted fresh n delicious. Also got the eggplant parmigiana. Tasted good too. We were in this area of Italy for only three days and we chose this restaurant for dinner twice! The first evening I had the lasagna. It was unexpectedly "soft", not like lasagna I am used to in the US, but it was absolutely delicious and somehow not heavy. I had pizza the second night, and the crust was perfect. The difference in pizza from Rome (cracker thin crust) to Naples (thin but chewy crust) was consistent from one restaurant to the next. The pizza here was flavorful, but simple, so you tasted the fresh ingredients, not a lot of spices and heavy toppings. The food was definitely four star level. For pasta we had carbonara with jamon. Just enough sauce and cheese to make it a rich dinner for sharing. My daughter had the lemon pasta, but not very good for me. Too rich with citrus. My lasagna was excellent! Enough to share. I ordered pizza with prosciutto which had three big pieces of prosciutto. Nice crust and delicious marinara. My son got the pepperoni pizza which was a spicy delicious treat. No dessert but wine was good and reasonable. While Rome I ate at this restaurant twice. Both occasions were the best meals I had in eight days. It is off of the main tourist route and in a nice area near the US Embassy. The service was great and the food was even better. If you are looking to sit back and get off of your feet and relax a little this is the spot for you. I had lunch both times, the first was La Classica salad and Spaghetti bolognese with meatballs. The second time I had my wife with me and we split the La Classico salad (romaine, arugula, fennel, cucumber and tomatoes) and a Classico Calzone. The best Calzone I have EVER had! This was our first meal in Italy and it didn't disappoint! We had potato croquettes which were crispy outside and deliciously fluffy inside. A prosciutto and melon appetizer, the melon was sweet and the prosciutto perfect. A San Marco Calzone, which was enormous! The crust was delicious...flaky and buttery and inside had plenty of cheese and spinach. Total yum! We also had a pizza with mushrooms and sausage and again, the crust was perfect, and the toppings finger licking good. For such a fancy and beautiful restaurant in Rome, I was terribly disappointed in th when my purse was stolen right from my table. I was with a tour group of about 15 people when I walked away from the dinner table for about a minute and a half , then returned and the purse with credit cards, IDs and €250 was completely gone. English friendly and great food. Started with the caprese and calamari. The calamari was very fresh and not too much breading. Had the orecchiette Gorgonzola, the tagliatelle pesto, and one of the salads. All were wonderful. The pasta is freshly made and the salad was a great portion for dinner. On this trip we spent 2 nights in Rome after stops in Milan, Verona, Venice, and Florence. A friend of our Italian hosts threw a party there our first night - unreal amounts of food and wine. It was obvious to us that he was very familiar with the owners and we were treated like royalty. The pizza was so good, we actually went there our second night because it was only a block and a half from our hotel, and we had to catch an early train. Dinner was good, service was abominable. Our (American) husbands got up to go pay the bill in the front. They came back and said that they had paid the bill with cc's and were told that the service charge was not included because that is collected in cash. Not being familiar with how much to give them, the guys came back to the table and asked our Italian friend (traveling with us from their home in northern Italy) how to handle this. A look of absolute fury came over her face, and she got up and went to the front. After a very short time, she returned to the table, saying "They want to bring us limoncello. Humph". She then grabbed her things, and we all did the same, following her out as she told the manager exactly what she thought of him. End of the visit to San Marco. It was actually very disheartening as it was the first time we encountered ANYTHING other than amazing Italian hospitality during the first week of our trip.
