My fiance grew up in Avon Park and she raves about this place! So every time we take the drive to visit her family, we definitely have to make a stop at this amazing Mexican grocery store which also serves up delicious tacos. Hole in the wall yelp adventure at its best! This is the perfect two or three bite taco! Pick from the list of meats that are cooked on a screaming hot cooktop. It gives the meat that right amount of char, but still tender on the inside. My favorites of course is the carne asada (beef) and pastor (pork). For something different, try the barbacoa. Not quite sure what cut of meat they used but it tasted like oxtail and brisket. Kinda fatty, but in a good way! Try the lengua if you are even more adventurous! I get them the way they are served: onions, cilantro, lime, side of green sauce (med spice). These tacos pack so much flavor in their itty bitty house made corn tortillas. 5 or 6 tacos usually does the trick :) There is outside seating in a covered patio by the food stand. But if the Florida heat gets too much, you can sit inside the grocery store where there are 3 small tables next to the drink section. I hear you can also buy beer from right there and drink it. They also serve other dishes near the table seating area and will have to try them next time. If you ever find your way around Highlands County: Avon Park, Sebring, Lake Placid be sure to stop by. It would even be worth a side trip! Yelp 100 Challenge 60/100

Amazing authentic Mexican food I had the three tacos - chicken, beef, and pork served with onions, cilantro and queso blanco and avacado A side cup of green sauce accompanied them, not sure what it was called, but it had the color of guacamole but much thinner and spicier, it was sublime. $5.50 for all three tacos This place is a true gem

Wow! This place has made me fall in love with tacos all over again, in fact, every time I come my heart smiles. The tacos are authentic with onions, cilantro & green sauce (avocado hot sauce) - just to die for. I live in South Florida, so my rides up North to visit my boyfriend make this our "go to" spot. Normally, I stay away from pork but once I'm here I can eat a whole plate of pork tacos!

Folks kept telling me about the amazing Chorizo Breakfast Burrito, so I finally stopped in the morning to give it a go. This is that story. Arriving- It's on US Route 27 South and you can't miss it as the restaurant name is emblazoned on the canopy. See my picture. Parking is easy and if you have the need there are two handicapped spaces around the back near a second entrance. Ambience- The convenience store/restaurant is in the back and kind of combined. There are acres of cooler doors with every drink you can imagine including beer & wine. Just grab what you want to drink with your meal. Don't worry, you pay when you're finished. There is a bright and spotless dining area with a bunch of tables & booths. See my picture. Pro Tip- I'm a gringo and if you are also, you will be in the minority. Don't panic, you'll be made to feel very welcome! Food- This is an order at the window kind of place. There are some menus on the wall but not everything is included. Just ask. So, I asked for the famous Chorizo Breakfast Burrito- "Small or large? Small please." "Would you also like Beef & Cheese? Hell yes!" "Here or to-go? Here please." "What color sauce? Red please." Less than five minutes later it was ready and plated beautifully. Not too shabby for a gas station! Pro Tip- They make their own tortillas year daily! OMG I was in love! It was piping hot, and the aroma was incredible. It was very dense in a good way. This was the small and it was very filling. The chorizo was wonderful and spicy so expect that. I could also taste the melted cheese. It was one hell of a breakfast. The large size would have been too big for a morning meal for me. It was $5.99 and I'd added a Starbucks drink out of the cooler. My total tab was $8 and change. Yelp reviews originally clued me into this place and as a result, I had a five-star simple and memorable breakfast!

I live here and we have dozens of delightful, small privately-owned Mexican restaurants of which this is one. Arriving- Facing Main Street with an adequate private lot so getting here and parking is a snap. Ambience- Not much but that's not why you're here. Like most of these joints it's a combo of a small store and a restaurant. A few tables and booths, an open kitchen, and a little Florida kitsch and that's it! The customers will be mostly Hispanic but a gringo like me will feel completely welcome. The Television will almost certainly be on a Hispanic channel. Note that this is one of the very few small Mexican joints that has table service! Adult Libations- Somewhere along the way they acquired a beer & wine license so be sure to grab a Corona or a Modelo to go with your meal. It will be served with an interesting bottle opener that you can see in my picture. Customer Service- Friendly and efficient and I've never had a problem. Food- A large, laminated menu with everything you would expect. Beef, chicken, pork, or shrimp, it's all there, Mexican style. I went with Carnitas served with rice and beans and a small side salad. It included my choice of flour or corn tortillas for $12.99. It was out very quickly. Delicious! The pork was moist, tender, and lightly seasoned with some sauce on the side. The rice and beans were hot and typical and tasty. The side salad was fresh, and my tortillas were nice and hot. A fine four-star Mexican meal that was very affordable. These fine folks are overshadowed by a hugely successful competitor a stones throw away. So, if you are sick of the giant Americanized Mexican places, give them a try, especially if you desire table service!

Upon review of their menu, we notice that at top of page right above "Appetizers", the restaurant states "First bowel of chips & salsa are complimentary, thereafter, next bowl is $5.99. So we thought we'd verify that since we have never encountered this policy before And we eat at many Mexican restaurants during the year. So our waiter came by and my husband asked if that policy was enforced & he replied "Yes". So that policy basically took this restaurant off our list to return. We normally enjoy a 2nd basket along with 2-3 bowls of salsa to chill out before we order. Now maybe we understand why this location is not as busy as 2 of their competitors are. Just never saw the 1 basket policy before. In their defense, coke products were offered at $2.99, which is a good consumer price. Not much thought was given to their plates presentation - very plain. The chicken in my flautas lacked any seasoning at all creating a very dry product. Very small serving of beans. Rice serving size was normal. Server did not keep my drink filled and my husband had to ask for his to be refilled. X don't think we'll return for visit #2.

I live in this teeny tiny town and love to support family businesses, and I've stuck with them throughout the challenges. Let's see where they stand now- Arriving- About as easy as it gets! They are directly on US Route 27 North and if you are southbound there is a dedicated turning lane. You'll find a nice-sized parking lot with the usual handicapped spots. Ambience- It's basically one big room with tables and booths on the sides. The bar is on the back wall with a half wall partition separating it from the restaurant. It is meticulously maintained and spotless. There's Mexican kitsch of course but less than other places. See my pic. There is a beautiful lakeside, outside deck that appears to be used on weekend evenings. I've never used it, but I hear good things. Wi-Fi- Nope, not here which is unusual for a place this size. They get a small ding for that! Adult Libations- Full bar with extensive choices complete with the requisite long list of unique margaritas. I was delighted to see that their house margarita (Casa Margarita) is not made in bulk which is typical, but handmade with Patron and premium margarita mix @ $13. Mine was delicious! See my pic. Menu- Huge and well organized with tremendous depth and breadth. Just about everything you expect is there. I was craving some "elote" but alas, that was not to be. Sigh! Web Site- Beautifully presented menus! A great chance to plan your meal before you arrive. The drink menu is surprisingly missing, and they need to fix that because the competition displays theirs! Food- I began with complimentary chips & salsa. The chips were medium thick and fresh. The salsa was medium spicy for my Gringo tastes and also tasted fresh. I ordered the A.C.C.P which is grilled chicken breast and chorizo covered with queso and served with rice and beans. Homemade corn tortillas came along for the ride @ $15.99. It arrived quickly and as you can see from my picture, it was plated nicely. The rice & beans were on point, and the tortillas were hot and fresh. There was plenty of chicken and chorizo and the queso was rich and creamy. An excellent dish all around! Customer Service- EXCEPTIONAL! I was greeted and served by a daughter of the owners. She was everything you want a server to be. Friendly, efficient, knowledgeable and checked on me appropriately. I couldn't have asked for more! Conclusion- I was a happy camper! I would have been a little happier with some elote and Wi-Fi, but my overall experience is an easy 4 stars!

There are a few tables, but most folks just sit there to wait for their takeout orders. English is the 2nd language here but communicating is no problem. Customer Service- As it's takeout, the person that takes your order will turn around to the tiny visible kitchen and grill and prepare your order with long practiced efficiency. Note- Don't panic if you see ambulances and multiple law enforcement vehicles in the parking lot. Those folks are experts at finding great takeout food! So, like I said, a 1.2-pound Medium Asada Burrito made it home. I've been coming here for years, and that bad boy was its usual awesome, filling, behemoth of a burrito.
