Heaven on a Fork! Even after ten years of visits, the bloom is not off the rose! For this lunch to-go visit, I was in the mood for spicy food, so I went with their Chorizo meal. So how was it? Read on to find out. Arriving- They are on Main St., just a few seconds off US Route 27 so they are simple to find. There is a private parking lot that can be a bit of a challenge as they are insanely popular. Ambience- It is a combination Mexican market and restaurant that is so common in this part of the state. There are quite a few tables and booths that are kept nice and clean. You order and pay the cashier, and they'll call you when it's ready. This is a very, very casual place! BTW-This place has a spotless open kitchen. Not to be missed is the complimentary, with purchase, Salsa Bar. Delicious! There are plenty of small to-go containers to sample the bar items if you're taking your meal home like I did on this visit. Customer Service- Everyone that works here will be Hispanic, but all the customer-facing folks speak excellent English. They are always friendly, and I've never had a problem. Pro Tip- If you are so inclined, before you place your order, walk to the coolers at the back of the market and grab yourself a cold brewski! Pro Tip- The menu board is in Spanish but there are English menus readily available. Food- All your Mexican favorites, both meats and seafood, in very generous portions. I ordered the Chorizo meal @ $14. My picture is a little deceiving. See that slab of delicious spicy sausage? There is another piece the same size, directly underneath! I put the box on my scale at home and it was just under 2 lbs.! That's a lot of lunch and it was awesome. Conclusion- So they have over 100 reviews @ 4.5 stars and they deserve it. It's a walk-up counter and the menu is above and they also have menus you can order from. As for service, they do bring you the food to your table if you are going to eat here and there is a salsa and condiments bar with a little bit of everything to top your tacos or any other plate you order. Good Mexican food in a casual setting. In fact, this place also is a nice little market. Tacos are priced right and are decently stuffed with meat. Service was friendly and only enhanced my overall experience of this establishment. I am not down this way often, but I am glad that I tried this pretty cool place. Tacos and Mexican food in general are one of my favorite foods and this is a great place to stop in. As I said, the place is casual and the only ambience is their lack of one, but I have found that my most memorable Mexican meals have come from humble establishments just like this. Someone recommended this place but I was very disappointed in their Grande Burrito which was very small and was basically chopped meat in a tortilla - sloppy joe rolled in a tortilla definitely not a burrito. Loaded with lots of toppings and a great value. Honestly I crave them all the time. These are my favorites. Steak fajitas come out with such a delicious Smokey flavor mixed with onions. Chicken tacos come plain in doubled up corn soft tacos. My son asked for cheese and they gave him a generous sprinkling of Shredded white cheese that tastes like mozzarella but is probably a common Mexican cheese I am not familiar with. He is 8 and a lite eater and finishes three of these small tacos. It's wonderful that we found food he will eat a full plate. Picky eater and he loves it here! Drinks are best to be picked out before walking to the register to order bc then you will pay the actual price of the drink. If you don't have the drink in hand when you get up there they tell you to grab any drink you want and then charge you for the most expensive drink. I always love that I can get a glass bottled Mexican coke. Kids like getting coconut water. They have other choices like sodas and Gatorade's etc. lots of choices. Market is under same roof and has beautiful fruits veggies, meats , and grocery items and also working supplies and clothes for the working farm hands. It is true there is no social distancing but cashier wears a mask and you can choose to sit in a less crowded spot in the dining area or take it to go. First off, this is a Taqueria not a fine dining establishment so it is being rated as a Taqueria. That said, this place is solid. A great place for a great meal. Interesting mix of customers. A few 70+ gringo couples. Some gringos. A bunch of Hispanic workers getting off work. And two tables of extended families, Hispanic, one 10 people one 8 people. And everyone in the place was eating and enjoying. I had the Carne Asada Plate. It came with beans, fantastic rice, a small salad, avocado, pickled veggies, 6 fresh tortilla and a mound of Carne Asada with perfectly caramelized onions. There was a bar where you could get fresh sauces, cilantro, pico de gallo, chopped vegetables etc. Two red sauces and a green sauce. House made. And all three hot, some hotter than others. The Carne Asada was the best I have had since I was in a small local place in Las Cruces New Mexico years ago. Tender and flavorful. A huge amount of food. What an amazing find in the middle of the state. OK so I'm a West Coast Florida girl. Happened to be in the middle of the state by accident to get my diving certification nearby on this little lake that everybody and their brother goes to for their practices. I think it's called Lake Disston. After my dive which happened to be on probably the coldest day of the year in Florida we were really hungry and came across this place by accident. BEST Mexican food in Avon Park!! Seriously, this is my go-to place for fresh, fast food! This place is connected with a grocery store that has everything you'll need to make that perfect Mexican meal ;) Lots of fresh produce, fresh cut meats, pre-made marinated meats (which are great, because it comes directly off the menu) and they even have a small bakery, which I've tried and are good. They have a little bit of everything, from phone cards to pinata's. No joking here! The place is well kept and very clean. Service is great, and if you dine in, they take your plate and clean the tables fast. You really can't beat the prices in here, it's so inexpensive and your food literally comes out less than 10 minutes. PROMISE! The menu is placed on top of the counter and also a menu by the cashier. It's cool seeing the kitchen and all the chefs cooking, there's even a lady in a back who you can see making tortilla's by hand. Freshness at its finest! The only tricky thing here is once your meal is done they call out your order, and it can be hard to hear or know if your food is done. I would suggest that you stand in the back where the drinks are, just to make sure you get your order. Or, do what I do and just order take out :) Food, the food! It's really hard just to pick one because I have a lot of favorites. So here are some of my recommendations: -Sopes: Chicken sopes to be exact! It's a thick tortilla that looks like a little plate that gets topped with beans, whatever meat you prefer, lettuce, tomato, avocado, and cojita cheese. Man, now I'm hungry.. hah. :P -Fajitas: Honestly, do yourself a favor and just order the mixed combo, which consists of chicken, beef, and shrimp. It gets served with rice, re-fried beans, and freshly made tortilla's (your choice of flour or corn) -Flautas: Crispy, deep-fried tortilla's that are rolled with meat and get topped with lettuce, tomato, cotija cheese, and that good ol' sour cream. -Carne Asada: Marinated beef in some goodness that gets sauteed with onions and served with rice and re-fried beans. Soooooo good! Honestly, these are just a "few of my favorite things" and to down everything, get a nice large drink of Horchata!
