If you're looking for fresh seafood in a romantic and intimate setting, La Zaranda is a good place for it. We visited La Zaranda for dinner one evening, as my partner heard that this place was great for seafood. We visited on a weekday evening and the place was super busy even then. Most people were sitting outside, which is where we ended up sitting too, as this place is great for people watching and was a more lively setting, with all the other outdoor dining establishments nearby. My partner and I shared the shrimp entree, which came with fresh, grilled shrimp, rice and avocado. We were provided complimentary salsas with a few chips, which was nice. The shrimp entree seemed to be one of the most popular dishes here, as we saw that most of the tables ordered this too. The grilled shrimp was very good, and liked that it was light. It had some garlic flavor to it and was cooked in butter. The portion of the shrimp was large, and you could tell they were fresh. I especially liked taking bites of it with the fresh avocado! La Zaranda was one of the more expensive restaurants we visited in Mexico City, with seafood being its specialty in a hip neighborhood. Note that if you do sit outside, there will be panhandlers and/or people trying to sell you stuff. We had a nice time here. read more

La Zaranda is one of the simply cool, casual restaurants we ate at in Mexico City. There is indoor and al fresco dining, with so many good looking twenty and thirty-somethings I thought we were filming a telenova. We never had the pre-Hispanic cooking technique of the Zarandeo. Most of the food was cooked on a charcoal grill. The owner helped us through the menu. We enjoyed the tasty Pulpo Octopus "wings" for appetizers. The table had a multitude of hot sauces and we tried them all. The whole snapper was boned, filet and grilled. It was the best seafood we had in Mexico City, with different seasonings on each half, and moist to perfection. Less successful to me were the grilled jumbo shrimps. Somehow I didn't care for the sauce and salt, but my friend liked it and all the shrimp were gone. Service was superb. The wine was well-matched by the owner. Sitting outside in this delightful place is simply awesome to enjoy the city life to its fullest. The vibrant neighborhood around the cafe, felt reminiscent of Spain or French streets, with a constant stream of traffic, plenty other restaurants and bars around the roundabout, children playing, people walking their dogs, and a lovely spot to catch the last golden rays of sunlight as the day gives in to night. And all the while, nomad street musicians stop their migrations to play pleasant acoustic music. This place is perfect for people watching! At any rate, I believe the location is a fundamental asset to this place--not that the food isn't great :) But enough ranting about the location! The decor is unpretentious, modern, and functional. Some observations: the tuna carnitas were super tasty, but it could've been a little less dry. Additionally, I thought everything in this dish was spicy--even the avocado! (No, seriously!) For tacos, I tried 2: lechón taco, which was A-OK, but the Taco Carnitas Estilo Acambaro was AMAZING! For dessert, I finished with a Plátano tatemado--literally translates as roasted banana. The banana comes with a cream made with, I believe, cheese, which was not to my taste. And I also tried a café caraiquillo (espresso shot with Liquour 43). This is very similar to a cold Irish coffee, and rather heavy in the alcohol :) Overall this place is a good place for people watching, live street music, and delicious food with friends. And if it's too full, you can always go around the park for many other choices :) read more

We read the reviews on yelp and it seemed positive, but when we got there I wanted a beer 50 pesos but the waiter heavily pushed me to get the margarita 175 I relented to be a good sport but regretted it. Next he steered us to the fish platter (600 pesos). He indicated it would be enough for 3 and it seemed to be their specialty. He then told us it was 800 pesos because it was for 3. When it came the fish was good but the tortillas were stale ( l mean hard to chew stale) and it was not enough food by far. At this point we were just trying to get out of there. The final bill was 1270 or about $70 us. This is San Francisco prices ( where we are from) and the food was mediocre. We stopped by a taco stand and had far better food for 200 pesos total! read more

Came here to get a drink and soak in CDMX atmosphere on our first day! Cute little place with indoor and outdoor seating. We opted for indoor as there were a lot of people smoking outside. It's still open which was nice so we could people watch! Servers are nice, most speak English! We ordered a few appetizers and beer. Guac and salsa were yummy! Note- this is fairly touristy as it's in the circle with all the CDMX letters for pics and where most people/tourists come to grab a bite and day drink during the weekend! My boyfriend got food poisoning from this place. He ate the oysters and it's the only different food that he ate vs me all day. Besides the food poisoning, the food was disappointing. I therefore wouldn't even have given this place more than a 2. I ate the corn on a cob as well as the whole fish. The corn was very basic with a simple mayo and some spice to dip in. I expected a better sauce than mayo. The corn itself also wasn't especially good. 2/5 The whole fish tasted a bit 'fishy' (as in not so fresh, but not so bad either). It was a bit overcooked and not memorable. 2.5/5 Thankfully I didn't try the oysters, but my boyfriend says they tasted 'fishy' as well. It was overall slightly subpar and a bit expensive. Add to this the food poisoning... I do not recommend this place whatsoever. read more

I LOVE this place! My wife and I ate here last year, and as soon as we came back, we couldn't wait to come again. So wonderful! Beautiful area if you eat outdoors, right on the fountain circle, always plenty of people. Indoors is nice as well. Their specialty is grilled food, especially seafood, and the grilled octopus, grilled shrimp, grilled corn, and grilled fish were all scrumptious! Mezcal cocktails were out of this world - I could see just coming in to get drinks. Prices were reasonable - it's more expensive than some, but certainly not at 4 star levels. I can see some people being disappointed if they're comparing this to Puyol or Maximo Bistro but c'mon, it's not that expensive, it's not that pretentious - it's just a moderately upscale restaurant with great ambience, great food, and great drinks. If you're tired of waiting for 2 hours trying to get in to the overstuffed, oversold frat party that Contremar can be some nights, cross the street and try this. read more

I am from California and am visiting Mexico City for a week. I came to La Zaranda last night with a Mexican friend and had a great time. I came back tonight alone because the fish was delicious. However, when the waiter brought me the bill, the fish was 420 pesos instead of the 290 peso price listed on the menu. I thought this was strange, so I asked my waiter what the deal was (I speak good Spanish). He told me that he was charging me more because the fish was 700 grams instead of the normal 500 grams. This obviously seemed suspicious so I called my Mexican friend. He told me this was unacceptable and that I should say something. I brought it up to my waiter, and the restaurant quickly sent over a manager, reduced the price to the price listed on the menu, and told me not to tip the waiter. I don't know if just the waiter was corrupt or the whole restaurant is taking advantage of gringos, but needless to say I will never be returning, despite their tasty food. I hate being scammed, and this was absolutely, without a doubt, an attempt to scam me because I am white. Shame on you, La Zaranda. I don't care a bit about the $7 difference, but the attempt to scam me is disgusting and disheartening. read more

We walked in because we saw live music outside and cute decor inside! The people working were super friendly! We got chips salsa and some guac and hung out for a while drinking beers and soaking in the views from the park outside and hustling and bustling street! So bad i created yelp account just to write this review- 1. portions are super small though advertised as sharing for 2 pax it was a single steak, nothing else except your one side. stupidly, I ordered guacamole so we got a steak and guacamole and nada mas, no tortillas or tostadas nothing. this was the most expensive meal of the trip and advertised for 2 ppl, needless to say everyone was still hungry. 2.the service was awful - waiter was smoking a cig by the table while 2 babies were eating. I heard the kitchen shout service and waited for 5 long minutes while no one did anything then tapped the waiter on the shoulder and asked if he could please get our food before it was completely cold. Too late! luckily even though I asked for a medium we got a rare so it was cold AND also bloody and rubbery. 3. the menus mention some prehispánico cooking style they are reviving but the only evidence of that was some metal thing they put the plate on so your steaks precariously balanced 20 cm off the table? no clue why because we had plenty of space on the table as the meal for w was a single steak on one plate....now it's up high. read more
