The bread was dry and hard, and it tasted like it had been sitting out for a while rather than being fresh. And tonight's dinner, was just as delicious as I had remembered!! There are no tamales, anywhere in our area, that comes even close to LaUnica's! The masa is light and flavorful. My major complaint with most commercial tamales is that in an attempt to make tamales with less (fats, or substituting oil, or vegetable shortening for the traditional lard. And the resulting masa is dense, and hard with little or no flavor. I wont even attempt to dissect their tamale, to guess their secrets... NOT MY JOB! It is enough to just know their location when the menu demands GOOD TAMALES!! And La Unica Panaderia is the place for good tamales! I placed a phone order then I drove out from Ventura to not only be overcharged but to return home with the wrong order. It wasn't convenient or worth it to drive back to argue with them but when I called, they kept trying to say they don't speak English. I know that store very well and there's at least three girls that do speak English, but they all denied that they speak English and would not help me. When I first came here, they were a smaller and less of the bigger establishment, they are now but one thing remains the same in terms of quality and their commitments to fine food and good value. If you are in any need of a well cooked pastry or a good quality bread these are the people to see about that. As long as i can remember La Unica Panaderia is one of those rare places one hardly seems to expect in a small town like this. But somehow I am just glad to see they are able to provide to a great community and myself included in that conversation. However do try to call ahead and or look at their operating hours as sometimes they'll close earlier on certain days then others. Whenever you enter or go inside you can smell the pastries and bread being made as you wait, it takes a good while but as i said before, Quality is key. read more

I don't have any recent pictures of my last trip, because I devoured my food. When my family was station away from California, and returned to SP we always made a ritual to stop by LA Unica for tamales, pan dulce or a burrito. Now my son is station near Boston and his request was LA Unica. We ordered a dozen tamales, and they were so moist. I didn't even need to drown the tamales with salsa. My son said they were so much better than traders Joe's (of course) which is the most convenient tamales he can find to his home. Did you know LA Unica serves Avena (creamy oatmeal)? It's the best Avena that comes close to my abuelita's (may God rest her soul). Oatmeal drenched in a rich cinnamon and vanilla flavor is the best oatmeal like no other, and they serve it up right here (to go of course). They put it in a coffee cup, so you can store it in your cup holder to enjoy at your desk or kitchen table. But their pan dulce, OMG. The bread was so fresh and soft inside. With a crisp sugar around the edges. I wouldn't expect my food not to be fresh here, because this place is so busy, rotating the freshness. There was a line outside this last visit. The parking lot is small. Rite Aid is next door, maybe park there...I believe there was one disabled parking spot. After my son practice his Spanish by placing the order, we waited outside for the order. Mask are recommended, but there were some people that were maskless. I love their tamales. The food is really good, but the service is horrible. I called to place an order for tamales. I asked if they were still making them, and the young lady said yes. I asked her if I could place an order of tamales and then she flipped it on me and said they don't make tamales. I said it was strange that she could not place an order of tamales after the fact she said there were some. She seemed like she didn't care and very incoherent. I've noticed that this has been an issue lately with poor customer service. I hope the owner is aware of this and takes care of it or they will fail as a business. read more

Went there on an early Sunday morning expecting to get freshly baked bread but instead got bread that was definitely 1 or 2 days old by how quickly it went stale (went bad by 2 PM). This review is for sweet bread and tamales. I have not tried their other food. Found this place looking for tamales during the week. Most places only have them on the weekend or don't make chicken ones for some weird reason. Tamales were delicious. It has a good ratio between meat and masa. Masa was moist and had good flavor to it. Sweet bread was amazing! Their strawberry straddle was flaky and sweet. Concha was moist and had sweetness throughout and not just on the top. We had a variety and they were all equally delicious. Their storefront was really good. They had imported Mexican chips that aren't made in the US. Mexican candy and the regular stuff you can buy out here. They sold cold drinks to include beer! Perfect for that Sunday brunch and Micheladas for the hangover. read more
