I mostly go to their Brooklyn location but labor is by far my favorite skate shop. Nice workers, good product, helpful staff, lots of variety, and they are the fairest in terms of their raffles as well. I like their variety and I also really like their designs on their own clothes. I've been skating for about 20 years and I have to say my most pleasant experience buying a skateboard was at this shop. Hands down. Service was great, selection was on point, staff knew their stuff. They made you feel welcome and wanted as a customer. Suggestions were solid, they were patient and friendly with my young children. Pricing was also reasonable! I came all the way to this store to buy my first skateboard and think this guy was having a bad day. Once I walked in this guy comes out from the back cursing and banging boards around. Since the other guy was assisting a customer I decided to ask him if I can try a few boards... he has a huge SIGH with his back turned to me, turns around and starts throwing boards in front of me then disappears. He came back and apologized, explained a few things about the boards but I left because at that point I just didn't care. Really weird first impression of Labor and the reviews I've read. Reason why I started there first. Oh well...never going back. I rather go to zumiez first before I ever go back to labor, but if you're reading reviews about skateboard shops, go to KCDC in Williamsburg! Super awesome people. First of all, I know absolutely nothing about skateboards. I don't ride skateboards. I don't know what makes a good skateboard. A total uninformed customer. But I was looking to buy a board for a birthday gift for my younger brother (read: I wanted to get him something that would blow his mind and make it the Best Birthday Ever™) The guys at Labor were incredibly helpful and patient, walking me through the different parts and giving me advice on deck sizes and types of skateboards. Even when I was stuck for a solid ten minutes or so trying to pick a design, they never rushed me and instead, tried to help me figure out what a thirteen year old boy might like. The service was phenomenal. After picking out a deck, they walked me through the process, from describing what trucks do to picking out wheels, and so on. I'm very much a casual skateboarder now but I still enjoy every aspect of the culture, and Labor is very much a staple in the NYC skateboarding scene. I drop by the shop to browse every few weeks and try to support as much as I can, buying a t-shirt, a hoodie, a hat, or a pair of shoes almost every visit. The owner is super nice and I've never felt unwelcome for coming to the shop without a skateboard or just looking around and not buying anything. I've visited the Brooklyn location as well, and am super impressed and proud of everyone at Labor for their success and commitment to New York skateboarding. Recently placed a purchase on their web store to support the shop during COVID-19, and received the order in just a couple of days. Popped in to pick up a deck for my youngest daughter, as we were nearby skating, and impulsive. They set her up with a sweet Sticks and Stones deck, tailored to kids, and gave it an awesome pinstrip in the grip tape to let the cool green color shine through. She is in love with it, and we are very happy parents. Great knowledgeable nice staff, great selection of decks, trucks wheels and gear. Set my kiddo up with a sweet ride. I was just visiting NYC to reunite with the German family I au paired for. In the 10 years since I lived with them, the boy has begun getting into skating. I wanted to get him something related to remember his first trip to the states with. Labor happened to be close to our hotel and I'm so happy they were. The guys were friendly and enthusiastic and threw in stickers and and zines about European skating to encourage him to keep at it. Classic New York skateshop complete with a wall full of local board brands(Frog, DOA, 5Boro etc), a bench outside to set up boards and a great community of skaters hanging around the shop. I ended up not buying anything but the owner James was nonetheless very helpful and engaging. read more

Labor is a skater's skateshop. It is very hard goods focused and will almost always have something you'd be stoked on, otherwise they will special order it for you. Their shoe selection has been bulking up, as well as their soft goods. They also sponsor a lot of skate video premieres, have events, and even brought a fun all city contest to NYC. Skateboarders have a ritual when it comes to visiting other cities and they like to purchase shop decks or anything that they purchase that will remind them about their visit to another city, essentially a piece of memorabilia. My biggest mistake could've been coming to the shop at 7:50 PM on a Saturday night because we were out of towners and didnt know our way around the NYC subway. When we arrived at the shop on a rainy evening with another individual that still shopping at the shop. As soon as we open the door, we were told that the shop was closed and come back tomorrow and which was followed by the door being shut on us. I tried to explain that we were fro out of town and visiting the city for the day, they simply ignored me. The funny part of this situation was that we ended up having dinner across the street at DIMES and while we were waiting, we noticed the last shopper left at 8:20 and the guys from the shop didn't leave till 8:30 PM. To me, I know I have 10 mins left and I would quickly shopped and wouldn't had wasted time by buying something before the clock struck 8 PM. Please don't let my experience discourage, but teach you to come to the shop when they open if you don't want to deal with what I had to deal with. read more

I wanted to get a new deck for my suvonyier from New York and this is the shop I choose. It wasn't tricky getting there just took the subway and used google maps. The place itself is quite tight, but pretty impressive how they set it up. They have clothes from a bunch of skater brands, shoes, wheels, trucks and the decks itself. They helped guide me through were I should look for a 8.00-ish board size. Their selection was great, some meme-ish ones, serious ones, and some basic ones. I choose a 8.06 drawn with marker(it looks like it, it isn't really drawn on with a marker) alligator one. I also got some wheels which were recommended by the worker there. A very chill vibe, if I came to New York I would definitely shop for another board here. Now I only got a deck and some new wheels cause I had some trucks at home,, so I haven't assembled it yet but will update when I do"". But the board seems pretty solid I mean I've already dropped it and banged it on a fence already, and the paint hasn't chipped so good sign. They give an option where they can put on the grip tap for you but it was raining and it wasn't the best condition. read more

I haven't skated in over a decade. Walking in felt like being at local shop again.

I can't say how glad I am that I came to this store vs buying on line or going to any other store. As soon as I walked in I was greeted not with one of those pressured can I help you greetings. I explained I have not skated in years, I already knew the set up I wanted but I wanted to hear what advice the staff had to give and it was dead on what I wanted. One of the guys who helped me named Corey just went back and forth about different set ups that I could try out that I didn't even know showed me a number of boards let me try them out to see how they feel not once did he try to up sell me into buying the most expensive things in the store but he made sure I got good quality items. Every thing in the store from clothes to equipment was top of the line anyways but he worked with my budget even got a discount and set up. Even after the board was set up I sat and just vibed with the guys there talking about places to skate and other crazy stories. Overall great service even greater prices. This place is great. Small little shop with a HUGE selection. They carry decks for lots of cool companies you don't often see in stores. The staff is super helpful and there is no pretentious skater attitude if you ask them questions. Prices are the same as what you would pay if you bought it online, actually a couple bucks cheaper.
