What a disappointment Lake Aire CG turned out to be. The two designated dump stations were not working therefore two RV sites were set up for that. Neither of them were easy to get to upon leaving the campground. The bathrooms were not that clean, nor was the laundry facility. We don't use the showers, etc. on site, but we judge the way a campground is run on whether these facilities are kept clean and tidy. According to the full-time resident next to our site, the washers and dryers are often out of order. The pool was not open either. We couldn't wait to leave and did so a day early. Lake Aire in general is run-down and in need of better management.

This is a quiet privately owned campground that is a great "home base" for visiting Charleston. With traffic, you are about half an hour away from downtown. Does this place have all the bells and whistles of an RV resort? No, but what it does have is pretty great. Read the reviews from years back, and I can tell you from experience that they continually work to upgrade this park. We see the improvements in just a year, and honestly, it was pretty close to perfect for us last year. Let me address a few of the negative older (very old) reviews. Mud - yes, you are in the Carolinas. It rains. (It's called the Low Country for a reason). Management has put down tons of gravel to address the issue. Not only was it not a problem last year, they have added even more gravel since we were here and despite the recent rain (tonight even), there is no standing water and it has drained. Permanent residents - yes they are here. But unlike other campgrounds where they are insular and sometimes downright unfriendly (or worse, sketchy), the residents here are a community and welcome you with open arms. In fact, they participate in the Kindness Rocks Project (Google it - seriously do). We have never felt more welcome at any other campground then we do here. The new sites are being built - unfortunately not completed for our visit this year, but they are close and they look like they are going to be really nice. Level concrete pads, nice fire pits, etc. Think patio sites at a KOA without the KOA price. Bathrooms and showers - we don't need to use them, however I have looked and they are well maintained and have been updated. In fact just today, the maintenance people were meeting with a resident (who also doesn't need to use them) listening to her ideas to further improve them. I overheard them. Not being able to book a specific site - so last year (our first) we weren't able to, but we wouldn't have known what to ask for anyway. We were put in C-7 (highly recommend). This year they sent an email to ask and we said a new site, but if they weren't complete yet, we'd love to have C-7 again. Guess where I am writing this review from! It is pretty obvious that the staff tries to accommodate guests. The Train - yes, there are tracks close by and they are in use. Do they disturb? Not really. We don't even hear it at night in our camper. During the day? We've heard it twice when we are outside. As in twice per day - it blows once as it approaches the crossing. Big deal? No. Not really at all. I could go on and on (and probably already have) about why we really like this place - suffice it to say: Friendly and responsive staff, welcoming residents, a country feel this close to Charleston and accessibility (if you are looking at the place up the street (that has Oak in the name, good luck getting in or out, especially during morning and afternoon rush) will keep us coming back to Lake Aire.

Lots of other activities for kids and adults - walking trails, disc golf course, climbing wall, nature course, dog park, fishing dock, and kayak/sup rentals. The campground is well kept and most sites are great. Beware of the ones that share a driveway if you're going it alone (50/51, 78/79, 124/125, etc). The campground map clearly denotes which ones have shared driveways. Also several sites have a sewer/water/electric hookup right on top of the neighboring site pretty much (119 to 118, for example). Those are not well marked on the map. Firewood at the store is hit or miss, so bring your own if you can. Each site does have a picnic table and fire ring, but the picnic tables are on the older side. Lots of trees all the way around, and there are a few interior sites with concrete pads. Bathhouse and showers are newly renovated and very nicely done. For the adventurous folks, there is also a primitive camping area for tenting on the other side of the overflow parking area behind the RV campground. These have raised tent pads, but no water and electric at the sites. There is also an adjacent group camping area frequently used by the boy scout troops. The campground store is very nice and I always end up spending money on trinkets and souvenirs. If you're going to the Festival of Lights, the shops are right across the street from the campground and very easy to walk to. This makes it super easy to buy ornaments before the shops get crowded and get train tickets before they sell out. 4 stars instead of 5 for just a few drawbacks. One, because football season is rough there. No cable, no TVs anywhere in the park to go watch the games, and digital antenna picks up only the most basic channels. The wi-fi at the campground store is good but only if you're standing in the store. Even a few RV spots away, you'll need a satellite with you to get your favorite football games. Also, some of the camping spots within our group needed a little TLC. The ash in the firepit from the previous guest was all the way up to the rim, leaving us to do the cleanup work. Campground staff was zooming around on their golf carts at way too fast speeds, making us nervous with our kids trying to ride their bikes. For the price we paid, it was very good but not great - a hard packed dirt spot with no cable/wi-fi and a sewer line at our neighboor's back door.

There are wooded spots and more manicured spots for RVs. They also have space for primitive camping, groups, and fully equipped cottages. The staff here is absolutely wonderful. Everyone is friendly and very helpful. F and I arrived late in Friday night, but there is a park ranger available after hours to let you in and guide you to your spot. The evenings are quiet after 10pm. It is family oriented and dog friendly too. We were more interested in getting into Charleston on Sunday and Uber picks up right by the general store all the time. This is really a lovely spot with lots to do.

They are converting it into an event space, which hasn't really started yet, so outside of some restrooms the building is blocked off as if anyone who walked through it was in mortal danger. They describe the current status of the park as a "soft opening", during which one can utilize the outdoor areas for picnic space and such. And when you get a look at them, you'll see why. This plot of land has splendid views looking out over the harbor, where the Ravenel bridge, Fort Sumter, and the city itself can be viewed clearly. The waterside is grassy, but you can walk along it for a bit and there was an enormous population of small crabs to watch skittering around. There were several different spaces to sit with this view, including a gazebo with a screen around it if you are concerned about bugs (which were not a huge issue when I dropped in, but I'm sure they are some of the time). There is no charge to get in, and while it's not an especially happening place, it's good that this land has opened up for public use.

When checking out I saw my $2,000 bar bill, protested and was told sorry we'll fix it. Nothing happened, so I called explained my issue .Asked for a manger, was told one would call me back - nothing. I feel ripped off! I think this is unacceptable and want all to know... shame maybe a good brand will buy them, till then never staying here again. The…read moreBurgundy Lounge is the upstairs bar inside the motel, and the pool bar is an outdoor bar inside a large building by the pool. The bars host live music and events, and I believe you may be able to rent them as venues- including the pool for pool parties. Pool passes are also available for those who want to swim or go to the pool without staying at the motel. Both of the bars have similar menus for cocktails, and the bartenders can also make you anything you want. They also have a few mocktails and NA options as well as sodas/tea/etc for the kids. Megan is one of the bartenders there, and she is wonderful. I had a blueberry cocktail that was flavorful, sweet, and strong. The cocktail prices (~$12) are reasonable for quality drinks and a few dollars cheaper than downtown. The bars, pool, and motel are all retro and make you feel like you're back in the 1970s. I haven't stayed in the motel and cannot rate that, but I have been inside a room, and it had a retro feel and is very clean. It is a motel so the doors face the parking lot, but everything feels very safe and the motel room prices are reasonable too.
