Of course we had to travel through what was being called an epic winter storm, so the first thing they did was put a hold on our site in case we got stuck down here. 2nd when she asked if we brought the dogs with us, she moved us to a different premium site that was closer to the dog park. Super convenient! It's an older park, but it is very well maintained. The sites are on top of each other, but we pretty much expect that from every KOA. This was middle of the winter, so everyone was spread out. The maintenance crew was working there tails off. Looks like they are leveling sites and there was a lot of new lumber in stacks. Not sure if they are redoing fencing? Would we stay here again for a quick trip? Absolutely. Again, it's an easy trip down 26 into downtown.

What a disappointment Lake Aire CG turned out to be. The two designated dump stations were not working therefore two RV sites were set up for that. Neither of them were easy to get to upon leaving the campground. The bathrooms were not that clean, nor was the laundry facility. We don't use the showers, etc. on site, but we judge the way a campground is run on whether these facilities are kept clean and tidy. According to the full-time resident next to our site, the washers and dryers are often out of order. The pool was not open either. We couldn't wait to leave and did so a day early. Lake Aire in general is run-down and in need of better management.

This is a quiet privately owned campground that is a great "home base" for visiting Charleston. With traffic, you are about half an hour away from downtown. Does this place have all the bells and whistles of an RV resort? No, but what it does have is pretty great. Read the reviews from years back, and I can tell you from experience that they continually work to upgrade this park. We see the improvements in just a year, and honestly, it was pretty close to perfect for us last year. Let me address a few of the negative older (very old) reviews. Mud - yes, you are in the Carolinas. It rains. (It's called the Low Country for a reason). Management has put down tons of gravel to address the issue. Not only was it not a problem last year, they have added even more gravel since we were here and despite the recent rain (tonight even), there is no standing water and it has drained. Permanent residents - yes they are here. But unlike other campgrounds where they are insular and sometimes downright unfriendly (or worse, sketchy), the residents here are a community and welcome you with open arms. In fact, they participate in the Kindness Rocks Project (Google it - seriously do). We have never felt more welcome at any other campground then we do here. The new sites are being built - unfortunately not completed for our visit this year, but they are close and they look like they are going to be really nice. Level concrete pads, nice fire pits, etc. Think patio sites at a KOA without the KOA price. Bathrooms and showers - we don't need to use them, however I have looked and they are well maintained and have been updated. In fact just today, the maintenance people were meeting with a resident (who also doesn't need to use them) listening to her ideas to further improve them. I overheard them. Not being able to book a specific site - so last year (our first) we weren't able to, but we wouldn't have known what to ask for anyway. We were put in C-7 (highly recommend). This year they sent an email to ask and we said a new site, but if they weren't complete yet, we'd love to have C-7 again. Guess where I am writing this review from! It is pretty obvious that the staff tries to accommodate guests. The Train - yes, there are tracks close by and they are in use. Do they disturb? Not really. We don't even hear it at night in our camper. During the day? We've heard it twice when we are outside. As in twice per day - it blows once as it approaches the crossing. Big deal? No. Not really at all. I could go on and on (and probably already have) about why we really like this place - suffice it to say: Friendly and responsive staff, welcoming residents, a country feel this close to Charleston and accessibility (if you are looking at the place up the street (that has Oak in the name, good luck getting in or out, especially during morning and afternoon rush) will keep us coming back to Lake Aire.

They didn't ask us when we phoned in to make our reservation for the night. But we left in a hurry before dawn broke. I didn't go into the bathroom because my husband said they were disgusting. He said the office, when he looked in the window, was also not clean. But, the only good part was the price was not bad and we had electricity.

The sites are also gravel and not paved. :( I planned to do some hiking on their trail, but multiple warning signs about alligators and venomous snakes to be wary of completely turned me off from exploring. On the plus side, the location itself is excellent, with plenty of restaurants and stores (including a Costco, Trader Joe & Walmart) nearby. They are also really good at picking up your garbage bags throughout the day.

This nice little camp site boasts a quiet marsh view and both RV and tent camping. There's a small…read morebathroom and shower that are better than nothing and a boat ramp just a short ways from the camp site. The primitive sites are first come first serve, but there is a large overflow field just before the campground. It is also the start of the Awendaw passage of the Palmetto Trail which is really pretty once you get farther into it and there are quite a few marsh views. Overnight parking is cheap in the overflow area if you wanted to park and hike into the trail for some dispersed camping. It's probably the most tame camping spot in the national forest.

Honestly, you might want to avoid it at all times due to the relentless noise. Between the train tracks running right through the property at all hours, heavy traffic buzzing from nearby roads, and military planes and helicopters rattling the sky all day from your neighboring military airbase, peace and quiet simply do not exist here. Another reviewer suggested using earplugs, but trust me: nothing is going to save your sanity when a full-blown freight train blares its horn at 3 a.m. every morning! We booked way in advance online for a week-long plus stay, only to be placed in a spot with absolutely zero shade. When we asked to move, the head staff, Leslie's favorite catchphrase was "just call us next time." Good to know & thanks so much for this lovely help, Leslie! To cool down, you can always hike an eighth of a mile to their very nice pool. Just be prepared for the "gravel gauntlet" (similar to your site, by the way)--navigating loose rocks in flip-flops while carrying pool gear in the heat isn't much fun. Ultimately, we've stayed in cheaper, friendlier, and much more accommodating places. Unless you really love the blazing sun, constant noise and unhelpful office manager, I'd suggest looking elsewhere.
