Awesome campground, especially during the festival of lights! If you're there in the summer, the waterpark and splash area are open too. Lots of other activities for kids and adults - walking trails, disc golf course, climbing wall, nature course, dog park, fishing dock, and kayak/sup rentals. The campground is well kept and most sites are great. Beware of the ones that share a driveway if you're going it alone (50/51, 78/79, 124/125, etc). The campground map clearly denotes which ones have shared driveways. Also several sites have a sewer/water/electric hookup right on top of the neighboring site pretty much (119 to 118, for example). Those are not well marked on the map. Firewood at the store is hit or miss, so bring your own if you can. Each site does have a picnic table and fire ring, but the picnic tables are on the older side. Lots of trees all the way around, and there are a few interior sites with concrete pads. Bathhouse and showers are newly renovated and very nicely done. For the adventurous folks, there is also a primitive camping area for tenting on the other side of the overflow parking area behind the RV campground. These have raised tent pads, but no water and electric at the sites. There is also an adjacent group camping area frequently used by the boy scout troops. The campground store is very nice and I always end up spending money on trinkets and souvenirs. If you're going to the Festival of Lights, the shops are right across the street from the campground and very easy to walk to. This makes it super easy to buy ornaments before the shops get crowded and get train tickets before they sell out. 4 stars instead of 5 for just a few drawbacks. One, because football season is rough there. No cable, no TVs anywhere in the park to go watch the games, and digital antenna picks up only the most basic channels. The wi-fi at the campground store is good but only if you're standing in the store. Even a few RV spots away, you'll need a satellite with you to get your favorite football games. Also, some of the camping spots within our group needed a little TLC. The ash in the firepit from the previous guest was all the way up to the rim, leaving us to do the cleanup work. Campground staff was zooming around on their golf carts at way too fast speeds, making us nervous with our kids trying to ride their bikes. For the price we paid, it was very good but not great - a hard packed dirt spot with no cable/wi-fi and a sewer line at our neighboor's back door. read more

Our first experience traveling in an RV. Can't say I would do it again in the near future but Campgrounds at St. James Island is a wonderful spot. There are wooded spots and more manicured spots for RVs. They also have space for primitive camping, groups, and fully equipped cottages. The staff here is absolutely wonderful. Everyone is friendly and very helpful. F and I arrived late in Friday night, but there is a park ranger available after hours to let you in and guide you to your spot. The evenings are quiet after 10pm. It is family oriented and dog friendly too. We were more interested in getting into Charleston on Sunday and Uber picks up right by the general store all the time. This is really a lovely spot with lots to do. read more

Clean park. GREAT DOGGO park and lake. Paved trails for bikes and scooters. Beautiful views. 1/2 star off for roadwork at entrance. Took me 35 mins to make a right turn from less than .1 mile away. Getting out equally as painful. 1/2 star loss for zero privacy in any campsite. Be prepared to know your neighbor, well. BUT, the single closest to downtown Charleston. Much better than the State Parks which are a ways out. Would come back, plenty of amenities. Give a 1/2 star back but the road work really has made it difficult. read more

This may the best campground we have ever stayed at by far. The place is awsome. It was our first time to Charleston and honestly we would have been happy to stay in the park the whole time. Walking trails and plenty of room to roam. A great dog park that our lab loved and she really enjoyed her swim in the lake. The place offers full hookups and nice sites. The park was nice and quiet. We stayed at the campground. Spacious sites with trees and fire rings. Bathrooms were clean. About 20-30 mins to the nearest beach on Folly or Isle of Palms. Lots of paved walking trails. Dog and family friendly. Bring your bikes. There is an outdoor activity area with a climbing wall and a small ropes course. My tweens had fun participating but you must book ahead online. read more

Stayed for seven nights while on spring break from Florida. Almost everyday we found ourselves saying, "I wish they had something like this in Orlando!" We have quite a few nice campgrounds all across Florida, but no County Park with such a plethora of things to do! A rock wall, rope challenge course, fishing dock, numerous paved bike paths, a new childrens' park, huge open fields, a large dog park and all the rental (bikes, kiakes, boats, etc.) equipment you need. Every bit of the 600+ acre park is in pristine condition and the staff goes above and beyond to make your stay pleasant. We had a minor electrical issue when we pulled in Saturday night; no problem--they sent someone right out. He was very accommodating and pleasant. We were in site 124, right around the corner from the office with enough space to fit out 40' fifth wheel, F350 and golf cart with room to spare. Most, if not all, sites are shaded by oak trees and include a fire ring, free Wi-Fi and picnic table. If available, we recommend the pull-thru sites for big rigs. Our site was great, but there's always one better ;) You can't beat the location; only 20 minutes to downtown Charleston and 10 minutes to Folly Beach (highly recommended by the locals). read more

Can't say enough great things about this place! We initially wanted to stay 2 nights and ended up staying 4! Great space, very clean and felt like we had plenty of room for truck and 28ft trailer. Nice wild spots and easy back in spot. Shower houses were the nicest I've been in and appreciate it being heated. Really nice to have recycling available. This park is so well kept. This park is close to the best of Charleston, and yet, it feels like a true woodsy camping experience. There are plenty of family and pet amenities, including a lake for paddle boats and canoes. The trails are lovely and the facilities for children are second to none. The best part of all -- we arrived just before 8 pm on November 29th. We had no idea, but this county park is the host of the annual holiday lights exhibit. Just imagine our children's faces as we drove through acres of an illuminated winter wonderland to enter the RV park. Priceless. And because we were coming as guests, the $20 admission fee was waived! read more

The campground at James Island is nice. I was disappointed in the rates. It was very expensive for the value we received. The park areas are very nice and during pleasant weather would be very enjoyable I am sure. The camp sites are close together and offer no privacy. The "y" sites are really only acceptable if you are traveling with a buddy. Otherwise you're nearly camping in your neighbors lap! The bathrooms were moderately clean. We were there for four days and I noticed debris in the shower was never cleaned. The activity center was lackluster - though better than nothing. Several amenities but they nickel and dime you for everything. Staff was helpful though not overly friendly - My sense is they were overwhelmed by a new POS and reservation system that had been recently installed. We enjoyed meeting some of the other guests but would only recommend due to the surrounding parks and the convenience of access to Charleston which we LOVED visiting. read more

Enjoyable atmosphere around camp ground. Tent camping sites are very close to each other. Camping area to bathrooms was just a short hike. No electric and water hook ups. No lights near camping area. Beautiful campground with palm trees. The little connivence has plenty of snacks and coffee! Nice and sweet staff. Huge dog playing area near water for them to swim and have a great time. This place is like no other campground or park that I've ever seen! I was referred here by locals who said that they will go to this place and stay there for a week just to vacation. The amenities are very good, there is a dog park, trails, laundromat, and any other kind of amenity that you wish to have. It's more like a small town. The sites are nice, pretty close together but well manicured and nestled in trees. You could spend months here if you wanted! read more

This place offers lots to do. Only downside is some of the extra activities they charge for on top of the price of camping price. We stayed in primitive camping location. Was not crowded at all, offered an outdoor type of feel with the security of a fence to hopefully help keep the bigger wildlife out. read more

This is SUCH A NICE PARK. We were blown away. The bathhouses are incredible, all title, even new white subway title in the showers, clean, and convenient! The sites are spacious and you can choice some pretty secluded ones. Our dogs LOVED the dog park with the beach. Everyone was super friendly. Unfortunately our time got cut short due to Hurricane Florence and then closing the park due to evacuations. Hopefully we will get a refund. Either way we will be back! read more

Awesome place! Convenient to Charleston but with many opportunities for outdoor fun. Walking trails, kayak and bike rentals, splash park, water park, outdoor area with climbing wall and more. We're thinking of returning with all our kids and grandkids for family fun in the great outdoors. Temporary bathhouses were not the best, but one remodeled facility opened while we were here and it's great! Other should open soon. Pack up your kids and enjoy all they have to offer. read more

The campground is very basic and traditional, but that's all you need when you're coming to visit with a group of Cub Scouts. We set up our tents early in the day, parked our cars on the other side of the trees so they weren't in the way, and just entertained ourselves all day with food and games. Will definitely be back because they also have camping sites with hookups for water and electric for those who don't prefer to camp in a tent on the ground the old fashioned way. read more

Just returned from a 4 night trip. Staff are wonderful, activities plentiful and sites are nice. I struggled to only give 3 stars because we had a great time, but the bathhouse is unacceptable in my opinion. No a/c. Standing water in 3 of 4 stalls. Clumps of hair and trash. Absolutely disgusting. Better in the morning but still covered in frogs and did I mention no a/c? Most campers were in RVs, so it wasn't an issue for them, but if you are relying on the bathhouse facilities, go elsewhere. Perhaps staff needs to take over cleaning and the bathrooms must be updated. $200 for our stay in a buddy site seems like we would at least have clean restrooms, even if they are dated, which is understandable and is the case in many campgrounds. Please please renovate. Other than that, we had a wonderful time. Just wanted to share with others. read more

This is a huge park! It has the largest fenced in dog park which leads to a beach for the dogs! During the Christmas season the entire park is decorated with LED lights. The park is extremely family friendly featuring several wonderful paved hiking paths! It's also a very beautiful park. The campground bathhouse is clean and well maintained. The only reason I am giving it a 4 star is due to the bad campground road conditions ( numerous large ruts - which could easily be repaired but haven't been) and many of the campground sites flood during any chance of rain. This too can be easily fixed - fill in the ruts and the muddy areas. The campground staff is friendly and helpful. The manager, Reed, is customer friendly, courteous and professional! This campground is also very close to all of the attractions of Charleston SC. read more

I agreed to the $28 deposit after checking the weather that Tuesday before the weekend I made a reservation for Friday and Saturday. The weather said 10% precipitation. However, the weather tends to change and the night before, they began to call for severe thunderstorms. Since we were camping in a primitive tent, we did not feel comfortable in severe weather with lightening and heavy rain. I called the office the next day to see if there was anything we could work out, and they denied my deposit. They said it must be an alert they receive. The manager I talked to was not only rude, but extremely condescending. The campground and park is nice, yes, but I will never ever give them business again, nor will I recommend this to any friends. Poor, poor business to take people's money for not wanting to put themselves in dangerous, life threatening situations. Make sure you're willing to lose that $28 if something out of your control comes up! read more

We have stayed at this campground twice. The first time was about five years ago. The second time was last month, for our Spring Break. What I loved about this campground was that the staff run it like a camping resort. The sites are large and far apart. We were sheltered by tall pines and our site backed up onto a wooded area. The bath house and laundry area were kept clean and well maintained. Our camp host was nearby and it was a good thing he was. The water pressure was so good, our hose blew off our camper while we were in Charleston for the day. He disconnected it for us and let us know as soon as we came back. There is so much to do here, the people are so friendly, you will camp here and you might not want to leave! We did eat out several times while we were in the James Island area, so make sure you check yelp.com before you dine. This is a great campground to make as your base camp while you tour the Charleston area. read more

we camped here for two nights and we're on our way home. this was our first time staying here but we'll be back. we tented in the primitive area which was nice. Festival of Lights was going on so not so quiet till after 12. But the tradeoff was worth it... the lights were fantastic... we went both nights. Dog park is also excellent. We didn't do the climbing wall or the splash park so they're on the list for next time. One evening we had some rowdy neighbors but the ranger straighten them out quickly. Short drive to all things Charleston and Folly beach so a great spot, especially if you have a dog. read more

The campground is beautiful and there is a lot to do in the park. Most of the campsites are large and well maintained. We did not have good luck with the wi-fi, even though we were very close to the camp office. My only complaint about the campground would be the bath house. The shower area had a lot of standing water and it was being taken over by tree frogs. My daughter counted 42 tree frogs! They were even in the toilets. The sinks and countertops were covered in frog poop until the cleaning people came back in the morning. It was gross. read more

The location was very convenient to the tourist locations in Charleston with a 20 minute drive into downtown. They do have wifi, but we found it to be very slow.
