Club sandwich kinds of diners in Montreal - 1 of 2 I found Restaurant Lafayette as a side effect of going to look for Troisieme Tasse coffeehouse about a block away from Metro Papineau. Troisieme Tasse's locale appeared to be empty and had leasing signs on its vitrines. As I walked back to the Metro realizing I needed to get coffee elsewhere, I saw Lafayette unobtrusively occupying a corner and almost directly across from the Metro station. I filed it away in my head to look it up and see what they had to offer. Lafayette checked out just fine on review sites, so I went in to eat lunch another day. As you walk in, it's a little long in the tooth, but that adds some character to Lafayette. It has the big booths and, as a bonus, its sitting on a corner allows it to have many booths next to windows. It looked like there was quite a bit to choose from, so it could have been that I was overwhelmed. That said, I settled on a club sandwich and a soft drink. I sure have eaten a lot of club sandwiches in the province of Quebec, with all of them being plentiful and satisfying. I've eaten them in Montreal, in Quebec City, and even smack in between the two in Trois-Rivieres. In fact, there used to be a place called Le Club Sandwich about a block or so west of Papineau for which the site, complete with the tacky building occupying it, has given way to gentrification. Lafayette has a good feel ... sort of like a worn and comfortable shoe. The service was also "comfortable," for lack of a better word, but not at all worn, or world weary. By this I mean that it was informal and good-natured, almost as if in a small town. The prices were in the ballpark for this genre and for having an in-town Montreal location close to the city center. The club sandwich was very good. I was very happy with that choice - almost always safe and almost always tasty and filling. Restaurant Lafayette has been around a long time and local folks as regulars is a good sign. I would eat here again and, with a location between Centre-Ville and the Jacques-Cartier Bridge and being so close to a Metro station, it would make it even more likely. read more

The best club sandwich and poutine I had. The service was amazing and very friendly staff.

Ordered here a few times after moving nearby. Their souvlaki were decent, but pizza very bland, tasteless dough and barely any sauce. Ordered a Greek salad, think it was my third order by then, and the salad dressing and feta were rancid, smelled horrid, literally had a gag reflex. Lost me as a customer. Check your expiry dates! Typical greasy spoon. Good prices, insanely huge menu with endless choices, portions big enough for two, and fast service. Me and my boyfriend got a side plate of onion rings, a small poutine, and four hot dogs. It was honestly too much food. Half of the portion of the poutine would have been enough to fill me up. Even my boyfriend thought it was too much food, and he prides himself on his bottomless stomach. The only downside was the hot dog with cheese and bacon I ordered. It was so pitiful! A square piece of bland Kraft cheese and a sad lone piece of bacon. But the rest of the food was really good so I didn't really matter to me. read more

First off the service was super slow. 10 minutes to get a menu and the place was mostly empty. To get the food was even longer. The prices are medium to pricey depending on what you order (see pictures for menu items and pics of food). The portions are generous but not amazingly tasty. Not bad, but not great- so verdict it's overpriced. Would go elsewhere for a similar meal. read more

My wife and I were in Montreal for the first time. Traffic was a nightmare, the public transportation system wasn't differently-abled-people friendly, and we hadn't brushed up on our French beforehand so communication was sometimes an issue. But Lafayette, which happened to be in walking distance of our B&B, was a Godsend. Normally when we travel we don't visit the same restaurant twice because we want to experience different things. This time we agreed we were getting dinner there on our second night too. The food was great. I just got poultine, but as far as comfort food goes Quebec has America beat. First night was plain old regular poultine, second night was the Lafayette poultine which was topped with hamburger and onions. My wife got the chicken macaroni one night (this may have been the Chinese macaroni other reviewers are talking about - the menu was French and I made my orders without knowing 100% what I was getting.) I didn't think at first it looked that appetizing, but after my wife wasn't able to finish it and I took care of the rest (in the interest of not wasting food) I conceded that it would be perfectly delicious for whenever I'd need a brief break from poultine. The service was attentive. When one of the waitresses had very limited English she didn't act put out by our lack of French. The price was very reasonable. I've had good tasting poultine dishes in British Columbia but Lafayette's seemed more authentic. Now if only we could take public transportation from Olympia, WA to Montreal, QC so I could try the Italian poultine. read more

This is a "go to" for me and my man! The poutine is cheap, big and one of the best we have tried in town. Their pizza is actually really delicious too! The service is fantastic here, always. The very best Italian poutine in Montreal ! I kid you not, I have a picture of it hanging on my kitchen wall it is such a thing of beauty. The regular poutines, the pizzas and the subs are also delish. They make all their sauces from scratch. The portions are huge and the price is cheap. Love to watch the crowd that hangs at this place. Service is always fast and friendly. It's a pretty big place so there is almost never any wait to be seated. Except during the fireworks shows in June. I live right around the corner of this restaurant. Love the friendly service. The food is what you would expect in this kind of restaurant. Hamburgers, pitas, pizzas, submarines and of course their breakfast! Huge portions for the price. I really like the food there. I pretty much tried it all but my favourite is the chicken pita platter. I always order the double pita so i can have some for later! Lol! My husbands favourite are their pizzas. I came here because I heard great things about their poutine. Unfortunately, I never had the chance to try it and I don't think I ever will come back due to its terrible service from a really rude waitress. Today I was served by a particular waitress that was rude right off the bat - yelled at me from across the room as I entered and did some hand waving gestures that literally came off looking like "get out". I was quickly approached by another nice waiter who told me that I could select any seat. The rude waitress didn't even get my order right when I clearly asked her that I wanted to convert my fries to a poutine and she immediately set the plate on my table, walked away before I even could have a chance to tell her. Throughout my dinner, she avoided eye contact with me (it was really hot and I needed a refill of water) and it took another nice employee to notice and serve me. After paying my bill with my credit card, she just left me alone at the terminal standing and walked away to serve another client (who was still in the middle of looking at their menu). I wasn't sure if my payment went through and it...again, took another employee to come and check and confirm that it went through. By the way - the restaurant at the time was barely busy. I called the restaurant afterwards and spoke with the manager and he apologized. I commend him for standing up for the rude waitress, but being new doesn't excuse her insane rudeness (the waitress wasn't even young). Throughout my experience, there was not a single smile, she never checked up on me to ask if things are good and even when I was done eating, it was another waitress who had to go tell her I was ready to pay. Literally just walked away from me at the end of the meal after I paid (and I still gave a nice tip) without even a thank you or proper greeting. The manager was nice enough to apologize and while that itself almost makes me want to come back, if you're not going to hold your own employees accountable for their lack of customer service and instead make excuses, I'm not going to step inside again. The food? It was...alright. The customer service experience here left such a sour taste in my mouth I couldn't even enjoy my meal. This is your typical neighborhood dinner, the food is descent and pretty cheap. There is not much of an ambiance really. The seating arrangement is pretty awkward, the chairs and table are fixed to the ground and they are a bit far from each other so you need to be leaning all the time. The coffee cup was leaking all over the table and if a napkin fall on the ground they just putting back on the table. So I guess you get the idea, not fancy but practical if you want a quick bite and you are right there then it is worth it. read more

Just like being back in the US.....well except that the waiter who spoke french and broken english was from mexico and not Montreal. It is amazing how many people we thought were local that came from somewhere else. Our waiter was one of them. the place was owned by greeks who know how to run diners (most diners in jersey are owned by greeks) The portions were generous and the ingredients fresh. the place was clean and bright and had 'tude. Gotta love me some old fashioned diner food late at night when it's freezing cold and Paté Chinois is on the daily special. My dining companion devoured the fried calamari and gives it a 7 out of 10 which, all things considered, is high praise. A special note, one of the 2 people sitting next to us asked for very burnt toast. The banter with the waitress was really sweet and they had a good laugh and...he got his very burnt toast! He was tickled pink. The place is so welcoming at 10PM on a cold evening and it's great to get service with a smile and a meal that's filling, tasty and really affordable. read more

Thanks to your positive reviews of this place I went and brought my gf to come experience this "great spot". I'm not sure if you went to the same Lafayette across from Papineau but there was nothing there worth any sort of praise. I wish I didn't read these reviews that lead to a waste of money. I'm writing this review to save other suckers like myself that read the good reviews and is considering this place. I tried the great poutine... Was honestly one of the worst I've had, just because of the sauce. The lettuce in the burger tasted strange and just eating the meat made me feel a little sick. On my gf's sub there was scraped off burnt stuff from the hot plate that was stuck on the steak. Waste of money, waiter tried to be nice but at the wrong moments. Asked if I'm ready to order then cut me off to show off his Diego The Explorer Note Pad. After we finished eating he asked us 3 times if we wanted to take it home. I guess no isn't a good enough answer. All in all a waste of time money and poor service. Club Sandwich is a few blocks away, make the short trip. read more

Old cooking oil aftertaste, small jew porrtions, overpriced, dont believe the reviews, they are family/friends.

This is my go-to place for a nice inexpensive breakfast or a juicy burger. The people are nice, service is fast and the food is good.

Tasty food, great service, we could tell the staff cared for regular elderly customers, a good place to eat!
