The outside and interior decor is aesthetically pleasing, yet deceiving. I am new to Lafayette and have been trying different places. Come to find out this place is known for cheap margaritas and fried rabbit, which I wasn't interested in. I was expecting more for the crowd but instead got cheaply made salsa, low quality chips, and cold bean dip. The food was mediocre. I have been to places that truly capture latin cuisine. Like I said, deceiving for the presentation. I could go further into things I didn't like but truly if this is the best there is to offer, people need to get out of Lafayette. La Fonda has been around quite a while. I remember having lunch there with my Mother and Grandmother many years ago. I thought that foid was good back then, but it is sure different now! If you want to start your evening with a pretty decent margarita or sangria, this is the place to be. Nice festive atmosphere in the bar. But should you want really good Mexican food, go somewhere else. However, if you must dine here, there are a few items on the menu that are worth trying; the fried rabbit appetizer is really good, the shrimp or chicken stuffed avocado has a nice flavor. We always come to LaFonda when visiting Lafayette. Service is great, friendly host/hostesses and wait staff. The margaritas are the best! I always get the cheese enchiladas which are wonderful. I have to be careful to not fill up on the bean dip, salsa and chips before my food arrives because it is that good!!! The guacamole is also delicious. We got sopapillas for dessert last night that were fantastic! This is one of my favorite places to eat in Lafayette!! read more

Ok so this Mexican restaurant gets my 5 stars bc I was very pleased!! I am a very picky tex-mex Mexican food water and this is hands down my fav for this area! I lived in Texas for 23 years and then I moved to Colorado and now to lafayette and this is the first place I've gone to for me can that I can say made me very happy! The atmosphere was great! The wait a little long though. We had fried rabbit for the appetizer, the chips & salsa were perfect. I had a taco, enchilada & tostada plate and I was pleasantly surprised even at the taco. Ain't what is was. Tuesday. Party of 8. 8:15 PM. Arrived and seated immediately. 8:35 PM. Menus arrive after we request them. 8:55 PM. Waiter takes our orders after we ask him to do so. 9:15 PM. Dinner arrives. Several of us notice that some of our items were cold but waiter had disappeared. 9:35 PM. Waiter reappears and offers to microwave cold items as kitchen is closed. Good service and excellent atmosphere here! Always a fun time going with a group and I never leave without a fun memory. Best known for their margeritas and fried chicken. If you value your money at all, please do not eat here. The plates are expensive for mexican food, and are comparable to el charrito mexican tv dinners. That being said, now and then I like an el charrito tv dinner. However, those only cost $1, and at Lafonda you will be paying about $12 for the exact same thing. Exact. I am not exaggerating. Bring one with you and compare it. I'm quite certain they just take it out the box, slide it on the plate, and stick it under the salamander for a bit. I came here at the recommendation of someone from lafayette - reading the other reviews, this seems quite commonplace. Apparently, a lot of people in lafayette do not know what good mexican food is supposed to taste like. I know for a fact there are better mexican restaurants in lafayette. So we got there at 730 pm had people come in after us in the same party size ve seated before us. They made comments that they knew the girl that picked who would be seated. The waiting area is to small for there slow service. It builds up with lafayette's middle class drunks. We got seated around 915pm in a very dated room, paper table top, over crowded area. Table was wobbly and the wrong style chairs for the cheap 1977 carpet which they would slide across. I seen people that have been in the dining room since 730 drunk as hell and of course they keep serving them drinks. My wife ordered an margarita which came in what I would say was a shot glass. We got the nachos at the info of our waiter all I can say is cheap cheese bad! We both ordered the ribeye covered.....what we got was a new york strip. It was covered in can cheese burned onions. Then we got an 128 dollar bill. Its was horrible, service bad, out dated. People of Lafayette if this is your flagship it has sunk. I would recommend this place close, staff fired, pick a style of food, remodel, take out a few tables. read more

Like a reviewer before me, I'm only giving one star because zero stars was not an option. We went for to celebrate a family member's birthday on a Wednesday night. It was beyond crowded, which I thought was a good sign of things to come. Boy, was I in for a surprise. As we tried to navigate through the "too-close together" tables, I noticed all of the people staring at us trying to make our way to our table. Once we were finally seated, the waiter brought us chips and salsa and bean dip. When I saw that the chips were not fresh, house-made chips, couldn't believe it. This "Mexican Restaurant" was serving tortilla chips that came from a bag! The salsa tasted like watered down Pace Picante sauce. The saving grace was the bean dip. It was actually decent. The service was incredibly slow. After about 20 minutes, we got our drinks and after about 30 minutes our food order was taken. I opted for the No. 1 Dinner. About 20 minutes after ordering, the waiter brings out a taco and guacamole salad. That's it. Thinking that the rest of our food would soon follow, I waited to eat. 30 minutes after the taco and guacamole arrived, the rest of the food for our table came out. 30 minutes! The taco meat tasted like it was made with Manwich. HORRIBLE! I moved on to my enchiladas and tamale, which were both very cold! The chili on the enchilada tasted like Hormel. Honestly, I've had TV dinners that I enjoyed more. The guacamole salad was ok after I added salt and pepper and removed the hunk of rock hard unripe avocado from it. After a few bites, I couldn't stomach any more. I'm not one for leaving/wasting food, but this stuff wasn't remotely good. The website says "serving good Mexican food since 1957" and it couldn't be more wrong. This was far from good. As for the ambiance, sure, it's fine if you like cramped tables in crowded dining rooms. My family sat at a round table and I couldn't even hear the person next to me unless we leaned into each other. It was very hard to celebrate anything in these conditions. It was simply OK! First waiter was rude and no help. We are from out of town and wanted fajita beef in our enchilada and that is not possible. Second waiter was really kind and helpful (Slate). Food was ok but maybe I'm picky because I am from Texas and Tex-Mex is our thing. Margarita is comfortably strong. Comes in small (lowball) glass. Reasonable price. Chips and salsa ok. read more

I have lived in Lafayette all my life (36 years to be exact). I have been going to LaFonda's since birth and it hasn't changed much. There is a lot of tradition there for locals; the margaritas, chips and salsa/bean dip (which everyone likes to mix together), the sangrias, the awesome staff, the birthday clowns (I hate clowns but it wouldn't be the same if they didn't sing to you and throw you a clown), the bartenders who know everyone by name. Lafondas is where you go to be social and have drinks with people! This isn't the place to go to if you want a quiet dinner with 2-3 other people. It is not quiet! But, this is a place that has been known to attract fun, youthful people. It has been around for a long time and the food is delicious. There are some better places but this one is definitely up there with them. I personally enjoy this place on the weekends... strawberry pina coladas and beef enchiladas.. my usual!! read more
