Dear reader, PJ's Lager House in Detroit is exactly the sort of place one hopes to stumble into and then quietly congratulate oneself for finding. It has that charming, welcoming dive bar energy that feels relaxed, unfussy, and immediately easy to like. The staff was friendly and fun, which set the tone nicely from the start, and the music was great all around. It is the kind of place that feels lively without trying too hard, which is very much in its favour. One of the coolest surprises was the speakeasy tucked away almost in plain sight. It can be rented for private events, and it is much larger and more finished than you might expect, with a really nice atmosphere that makes it feel special without losing the bar's overall charm. They also have a great outdoor area with a large TV display, which adds even more appeal if you want to linger a while. And then, of course, there was the happy hour deal: $8 for a shot and a Surfside, which had us at hello and frankly required very little convincing. Overall, PJ's Lager House delivered good drinks, good music, kind people, and a very good time. I would happily go back. read more

We had a great time at lager house, eating dinner before the concert and enjoying music in the back. The prices are really reasonable, bartenders friends and fast service. I enjoyed the spicy chicken sandwich and sweet potato fries. The fries were a HUGE portion and really tasty. The chicken sandwich wasn't overly spicy and had good flavor. Pages and even Yelp state they accept Apple and android pay. Only take cash or card. And the brunette haired lady bar tender with the glasses is BEYOND RUDE AS ALL HECK. Not just to me either it was EVERYONE. Short walks away before you can finish what you're saying. Snaps at you. She even ripped the menu out of my hand while I was reading it because it was the cocktail hour menu, I said I know but I was just seeing what was offered if we came back during, ignored me and walked off with menu slamming it down on the nearest counter. Beware the chicken po-boy is literally 2 chicken tenders on bread... wasn't what I was expecting... The burger is a burger, the chicken club is a chicken sandwich, pretty standard. Don't recommend any seafood from here. That was a mistake... Overall, if it's your only option late night what else can you do, it beats fast food or coneys in many regards. THIS PLACE WAS AWESOMEEEE First off, I loved the vibe here at the bar. Divey for sure! They had live music tonight along with a surfside sampling and I loved every moment. My friends and I had the best time and all of the workers were so sweet. Definitely want to come back. The black and bleu burger was AMAZING and maybe the most underrated bar food spot right outside of downtown. My burger was cooked to perfection and the BC was so yummy. My husband found the Lager House on YELP and what a neighborhood gem! So cute! Strongly recommend you get what they are known for - check out their burgers. OMG! Shroom burger with Swiss cheese medium and sweet potato fries. My husband got the black and bleu burger and I don't believe either of us said a word during lunch. :). I visited Lager House for a friend's birthday brunch. The atmosphere lacked warmth and coziness on that this particular cold and rainy day. Despite it being tucked away and unnoticed during my many drives past, they accommodated a table of 10 for brunch, which was fantastic. I ordered a classic breakfast with eggs, bacon, potatoes, and toast. While the potatoes looked a bit sad, they turned out to be the highlight of the plate. Everybody seemed to enjoy their food and it was reasonably priced which is hard to find in Detroit nowadays. The service was excellent, ensuring our coffees were filled, and mimosas kept coming. While the restaurant may seem typical of a bar in Corktown, the service and food were what made the visit worthwhile. read more

I have lost track of the amount of times I have ordered a spicy tofu sandwich and received chicken. Truly. I do not want to re-*traumatize myself. But perhaps I must. It is abhorrent, downright negligent, and disgusting that this establishment cannot simply read the orders on the ticket and complete them correctly. I worked in food service. It's not easy, but it's not so hard that you cannot respect the dietary preferences of your clientele. I have been vegan for some time, except for the occasions in which I order from Lager House, forgetting that the staff is criminally incompetent and inhumane. They seem to find some perverse pleasure in serving butchered meat to those who deliberately abstain. I have given the benefit of the doubt time and time again. I've been several times and P.J.'s is a decent watering hole and a pretty good place to get breakfast. The brunch menu is small but inventive, with many vegetarian and vegan options. I really wish their French toast was made with Texas toast or plain cinnamon bread, not cinnamon raisin bread. Come on, no one likes raisins. I normally order a basic eggs/meat/potatoes/toast breakfast. My companions have tried most everything on the menu and like it all, though one said the tofu scramble has too much pepper. The service is the biggest downfall here. Each time I've visited, I've waited and waited and waited, longing for a server or bartender to acknowledge me and take my order or fill my cup or take away dirty dishes or give me silverware or maybe not give sass when I ask for a side of butter when I'm served dry wheat toast (Me: Do you have butter? Her: *long pause* Um. I don't know if we have any. I'll have to check the kitchen.) If your establishment serving breakfast doesn't have butter... lord help you. I honestly can't pin how long I've been coming here for beers and awesome local bands but as I've entered the back end of life I love that I can still come here for an amazing brunch. I love that in adapting to the New Corktown of modern Detroit they didn't change the aesthetics or rock n roll roots of the place. I'm constantly dallying with the idea of being a vegetarian and I love that they have vegetarian options. I've been here a couple of times for brunch, so this will encompass all the food I've tried. First up, the Shrimp & Grits. This has been a current phase I've been going through, so whenever I see it on the menu I am bound honor and fealty to order it. I've gone though this with Steak & Eggs, Benedicts, and most recently Chicken and waffles, so I wonder how long this will last. This was a a different way than I've had it before. Instead of the grits being made in the traditional way, it was formed into a grits brick and the sauce almost like a soup or broth with the shrimp in it. Completely different than I've had in the past, but no less delicious. Whatever the sauce they use to flavor the dish is, it is wonderful and the shrimp is perfectly cooked. On a previous trip I tried the hash and it was another dish I really enjoyed. One if my biggest complaints lately has been what I consider the undercooking of taters but these were brilliantly crisp and the combination of spices and flavors spot on. Finally, the Scramble. I know none of these dishes sound especially exciting or unique but I think that's irrelevant when it comes to good food. I've seen places screw up grilled cheese and tomato soup, so never take delicious for granted. The scramble fits this perfectly. It was a perfect made breakfast that did everything it was supposed to with great flavor and minimal flair. If that doesn't fit the personality of PJ's I don't know what does. This is just one of those spots that just feels like home to me and I look forward to every time I get to come back. read more

Yes, it is a 'dive', but a clean, well-kept dive. Being a former health inspector I notice things like the maintenance and up keep of the facility, including the restrooms, behind the bar, the kitchen, and their dry storage in the basement. For being a really old building, they have kept it immaculate. Their food blew me away too. I ordered the Bahnmi salad w/ shrimp, and it not only looked amazing, but it tasted amazing too. 3 of 5 of us at my table got this salad and loved it. My sis got the Karen special, a po-boy w/ chicken strips and mac & cheese, and she couldn't stop talking about it, and Hubby got a burger that he was most pleased with. Sandy, the bar tender that night we came, was on her game, she served the whole bar, and every table too. She knows her stuff. We ended up here cuz Hubby's band was playing, and there was good crowd. The place is cut in 2, the first 1/2 being the bar & tables, and the other 1/2 being the stage venue w/ a few high top tables along the walls, but mostly standing room only. There is outdoor seating that was used for smoking in the winter. And a fun little record shop in the basement that had CD's and concert posters too. You just want to drink canned beers of Stroh's at the bar you can do that. You want craft beer they got that too. You want lunch they got that, dinner they got that. And the food is good. You want a record store in the basement they got that, vintage resale clothes yep yep. Live music and shows, they got that. And they have some killer pop ups with some very interesting food that comes in. The live bands and other things that they bring in are usually interesting and almost always free and damn entertaining. The place is just cool I always enjoy it. I've had good food. This is one of my favorite spots to see live music. Show after show. It's got a dive bar feel, for sure, but also enough room where you don't feel like you are being suffocated. Though certain concerts the stage floor is packed; but you can meander into the bar area to chill out, or onto their patio for some air. I like the different elements of the bar, for just that reason. If the concert floor gets too intense, which on occasion it does, there is a welcome respite to be had. I've seen some great shows here, especially Kid Congo, and Sim Cessna, most recently. One of the best nights of music I've had in a while. They book killer acts both locally and nationally, so it's hard to go wrong here. The bar staff is usually very friendly, and the drink prices are reasonable. They also have a free parking lot with an attendant, which is invaluable. It's just one of those classic places that I hope they don't ever change. It's perfect the way it is. read more

This particular night they had vegan Taco Bell night. It was amazing trust me if you didn't get a chance to grab something you missed out. Superthick supermoist superwellseasoned beef sandwiched between tomatoes+onion+bleu cheese+lettuce+sauce?+onion bun. In the name of burger lovers everywhere, please, please, please order this. Today. --The dog that, if present, will always be sitting directly in front of the door. Great live music venue! Great vegetarian and vegan options, but don't let that freak you out if you're into regular food cuz they had plenty of great choices available. Not one of those places where you're stuck eating crab grass and soy fries with a crappy burger to accommodate your vegan friends - they've clearly put some effort into the menu and have something for everyone. Awesome atmosphere- casual and welcoming. The bouncer/ server/ do it all big guy was super friendly...the legendary PJ himself was chatting with his guests & supporting some Michigan-grown rock talent. We saw 3 damn good bands last night for $10 cover- was so good we woulda paid double. The Legal Immigrants out of Grand Rapids blew the windows out across the street - only a matter of time before these guys hit. And the back patio is wood floored by someone who knew what they were doing, with nice furniture too heavy for you to pick up and run away with (never would; just sayin)...someone put some quality patio furniture in the enclosed open-aired with-umbrella tables out back on the smoking patio.
