Food was good. Homemade bread is worth the visit. Bread itself has a sweetness about it so for us, we didn't really enjoy the garlic bread. But the cinnamon bread works with that sweetness of the homemade bread. Sandwiches, on that sweet homemade bread, were quite large 16", but not a lot of meat/cheese. The sandwich has no sauce - you'll need to use the packets of mustard or mayo available in the restaurant. Bucket of spaghetti is their thing - meat sauce on the bottom. You almost have to dump it all out into a bowl to mix - the bucket is filled. That's a good thing. We also tried the meatballs-they were on the small side and quite salty. We won't order those meatballs again, but will be probably go back for the bucket of spaghetti and some cinnamon bread. read more

I found this place on Yelp when I was looking for something different while traveling through Illinois. I drove just a few miles off the interstate exit to get here, and it was well worth it. Employees were very friendly, and the food was good. I especially enjoyed the cinnamon bread. I ordered my food to go, and it was well packaged. Servings are very generous and prices are reasonable. Highly recommend a stop here if you are traveling in the area. read more

I worked for Tony and Marybeth back in 1984 I was 17, my first job. We always stop in to eat when we are in town from Florida. This time we were on our way to Iowa to our youngest daughter Wedding. When family found out we were driving through Decatur just to eat at La Gondolas we had a list of food to get for the bride and family. We absolutely love the food. From what I've read, this place is an institution and that's why it has such high ratings. I'm not from the area and was passing through so I don't have the emotional connection. In my opinion, the food was not good. I had the spaghetti and the sauce was oddly sweet. I know some people do prefer a sweeter sauce though. My daughters shared the ravioli. They were disappointed to find out they were meat-filled but they are very picky eaters and did eat almost all of them. The same sauce was on these as the spaghetti. My husband had Tony's torpedo. It was really soggy. It was take out so maybe if we are in it wouldn't have been so soggy. Also, the bread is very sweet almost like Hawaiian bread. The sandwich wasn't bad but needed a tad bit of savory to offset the sweet of the bread. Even the garlic bread was made from this sweet bread. Just really not my thing. When I'm looking for a Italian food I typically am looking for a savory, garlicky meal. The service at pick up was ok. The people are friendly. read more

Nothing like what you would expect... It is express and relatively fast Italian food. The bread is the best sweet Italian bread I have had ever! When I come to visit my family, I make sure I get a Torpedo sandwich for the drive back to Kansas City. The only bad thing about Lagondola is the hours, closed on Sunday!!! Have patronized Lagondola's for years. Have not had the spaghetti in years since the kids were little. Although everything still taste great, the portion size seems a lot smaller and the prices keep rising. Enjoy the Beef and Cheese sandwich but have to order extra marinara sauce because of the skimping. Mama Mia! A fine Tuesday afternoon, I found myself sitting in La Gondola with an elite food tasting group sampling some of The finest food ever imported from the motherland. A few members of our group were skeptical of the quality of food found within but with the support of our leader we hoppeed into the restaurant for a few tasty plates of pizza bread, pizza burgers, gondolas, and a host of other tasty treats. As we sunk our chompers in, a few members couldn't help but verbally exclaim the freshness of the bread entering our bodies. Lightly melted cheese coated my bread and meatballs were perfectly placed leading to an inevitable glorious experience. On a side note, the atmosphere will not lend itself to fine dining, prom dates, or any attempt to impress anyone. But , as stated above, what is lacking in decor is made up in taste and price. Have you ever heard of a fast food Italian place? Well here it is and you can even get a gallon of spaghetti! The inside could use an update but it was clean enough and the food was 3 out of 5 but your getting food quickly. The staff were friendly and willing to help. They have a drive through which I suppose is great for someone who needs to get food home very quickly as I don't think you should be eating this type food in the car while driving. It's hard enough to eat anything with sauce without getting a dinner badge let alone while your driving. Everyone should give it a try! read more

Decatur staple and wonderful family owned business. Been coming here since I was a kid. The 1/2 gallon bucket of spaghetti is a must order for every visit for me and the family. The spaghetti sauce is amazing and the garlic cheese bread is to die for. Also the Uncle Tony baked sub is one of the best sandwiches other than the cold torpedo sandwich. A bucket and either a loaf of garlic bread or garlic cheese bread will easily feed a family of 4. It reheats in the microwave really well too. If your visiting check it out. Something my spouse's family grew up eating. The meatballs were pretty good, something seemed strange my entire meal until they explained to me that it was Italian sweetbread, then it all clicked into place. The ambiance is something out of the 1970s or 80s. All they need are a few coin operated Space Invaders / Pac-Man machines and a pinball machine to round it out (maybe clean a little?). Amazing food. I'm not a big pasta fan but I do love their spaghetti. If I don't get it here, I don't eat it. Love their bread and their sandwiches. I could live off of only their sandwiches every day of my life. Wonderfully fresh ingredients and quick, friendly service. A clean eating area is inviting for those who dine in.
