Ohhh this hurts a little to give the lagoon 2 stars. I used to love this theater so much. When I lived in south mpls this was my go to theater. I loved the vibe and aesthetic. They usually have movies that don't show in mainstream theaters. But wow. Things have gone down hill for them. I'm not sure if it was a temporary issue but we went there for a movie, the theater we were in had a trash can set out to catch water that was dripping from the ceiling. Also, almost all the stalls in the women's bathroom were out of order and all but one sink. We paid $55 for tickets and concessions. And I feel like our experience was not worth $55. I'm so bummed about this. I hope they can step up their game and I am rooting for them, but this past experience was not good. :( read more

This is a great cinema. It doesnt have many of the add ons some other theaters may have, but it is one of the only theaters that shows indie films that larger thaters don't. The theater is usually quiet and there are not too many people. No assigned seating for tickets which is nice for me personally. Join the rewards program and get some of those rewards and perks when you join. The app for it is pretty great too. Tuesdays are discount days so take advantage! Patronize this local small theater so we can keep enjoying the varieties of movies it offers! read more

I just moved here from a city that lost all its Landmark locations over the last decade. I missed the chain and was thrilled to visit the Lagoon. But having to stand in the ticket-and-concessions line for ten minutes, behind multiple large groups with complicated orders, solely to have my online ticket scanned was a pretty poor customer experience that made me late for my screening. I've seen other theaters solve for the lack of a dedicated ticket taker by making a self-service scanner available at the entrance. I hope the Lagoon will consider something like that. If waiting in the popcorn line for a two-second scan is standard procedure, I likely won't be back. read more

Rude rude behavior at the front desk, including dumb stare when I asked about food specials (they were advertised outside), and pushing my hand aside because I was holding it out for change over the ticket box. The Lagoon is an Uptown I C O N and I'll always enjoy seeing films there, though I'm not sure if I'll be going much in the near future. They need to update their seating something fierce, cuz it's wildly uncomfortable. The fact that you can't lift the armrests means that if you are bigger than 250-300lbs, you simply WILL NOT fit into their seats and that's a real problem for a whole lot of Americans, especially Midewesteners, cuz we be hefty. Post-Oscars review of pre-Oscars times: I am so thankful to have a theater that shows indie films, Oscar nominated movies and shorts! We've been coming here for years now to see the nominated animated shorts, and it never disappoints. It's typically pretty quiet here when we come, but have always had great service. We buy tickets online and just scan when we arrive. The staff on our last visit hooked it UP and did butter in the middle and on the top of our large popcorn... and even let me go salt the goods when it was halfway full. My guy!! There are several theaters, and the seating is a bit non-traditional - it's less stacked and more of a slight slope. Thankfully the theaters aren't typically packed so you can easily see the screen. So happy to have a theater nearby that screens indie and short films. This review is a bit biased because Lagoon became one of the first places I visited after I started re-entering public spaces. It's an emotional spot for me. I love going to theaters and I have to say, so far every experience at Lagoon has been very positive. The audiences are more respectful of the movie-going experience than most, and every staff member I've interacted with has been polite and helpful. I haven't had any concessions here so I can't comment on food/drink, and I will say the floor of the theaters tend to be pretty sticky. But to be fair, I think that's something I've encountered in every theater that serves food. Whenever I want to see a non-Marvel film, I will always check if it's playing at Lagoon first. read more

Great local cinema. The staff are friendly and it's in a location that's easy to reach. If you're ok with walking a bit, you can park for free on the residential streets. Once my hip is resolved, that's what I'll be doing when I come here. One of the things I love most about this place is the popcorn flavorings. No, the popcorn doesn't need it. But, who's asking what popcorn needs, anyway? It's a nice touch to change up the flavor. I try to tie it to the movie I'm going to see, if I can. Concessions aren't outrageous in price, either. I love movies, and keep Landmark Lagoon Cinema on my toolbar so I can easily check what is currently showing. You'd think Landmark Lagoon would love its moviegoers. Sunday January 9, with the temps hovering around 0 and omicron raging, only three of us showed up for one of its matinees. The ticket taker, a young man, wanted me to scan the printed paper ticket I'd brought. Two lights on the scanner and two computer-generated icons on the ticket made it difficult to determine how exactly to do this, and I fumbled. "You have to scan it," "You have to scan it," he repeated, unhelpfully. I tried to hand it to him, but he refused to take it. As I walked away after he had finally deigned to scan the ticket, he called out something derogatory. I know I am a prime target for derision, an older woman who is not electronically skilled. But still, I felt awful as I went in and waited for the movie to start. I've decided to remove Landmark from my toolbar. Showtime Theaters in St. Louis Park offers a good selection of movies--and clerks politely scan tickets for customers. And of course, streaming is usually an option. I am competent enough to manage that. read more

Typical snack bar, but Lagoon is an older theater so they don't have modern amenities like large reclining leather seats. But the manager did come him to say Hi and make an introduction to The Florida Project which was a nice touch. Unfortunately, the bathrooms are upstairs. Also, no private parking. I paid more for parking at Mosaic than I did for the movie. Lastly, the movie was good, though the ending was kind of bizarre. read more

Also noticed that they currently have 12 Years a Slave and Out of the Furnace playing. Wanted to see all three, but the starting time for DBC best fit my schedule. The theater is not the newest or the nicest, but their film selection is stellar. I have been coming here for longer than I can remember now. They always have the movies that are getting the buzz that none of the megaplexes have. Hope they are still going strong for a long time to come. There are not enough theaters like the Lagoon in the Twin Cities; I don't think there are any other theaters like it in the Cities. read more

Like Kristin H, this is one of the few theaters where I see movies "regularly" (which is for most people not regularly at all). What I love about the Lagoon is it's consistency in it's offering of interesting and primarily non-mainstream films. I tend to feel that on any given week, there is always at least one film you can see and feel like you got your money's worth. We all know parking can be a total bitch in this part of town, and since I rarely travel with a roll of quarters, the meters are usually a no-go for me. But the Lagoon will validate a good chunck of your parking at the lot right adjacent and behind it. Makes going out for a post movie drink a little less painful on the wallet. read more

Several of the seats in the theater we were in were broken and the screens are pretty small. Lagoon Cinema is located in a nice neighborhood, but I wouldn't come here just to watch a movie. There's no free parking and the movie theatre isn't that nice. There's lots of great restaurants in the area, so unless you're eating in the area already, I don't recommend coming here! The prices of the movie tickets are decent and movie selection is pretty good. It has most of the recent movies showing. The popcorn is not bad as well. Kind of expensive, but that's how theatres make their money. read more

There are so many better movie theaters in this city that I don't understand why this movie theater would be anyone's first choice. It's rather dated in appearance and the seats are very uncomfortable. While watching the movie, the lights were kept on for the first 10 minutes of the movie before being turned off. After the movie was over, I had to use the flashlight on my phone to exit the theater because the lights were never turned back on. Horrible experience. Acutally, I am sure I am sure the only reason this movie theater gets 3 stars from me is because I was there watching a free movie. (yes, I am that chick that complains about free stuff). AND since the theater is located in Uptown, be prepared to pay for parking or walk 3 blocks. The choice is yours, but you have been warned. read more

The Lagoon is perfect for that obscure movie you wish to see. They accommodate the small screen showings and, oddly enough, the Oscar movie marathons like all the short films. I love going in because it's never packed. Sure, the refreshments cost a little more, but it's an independent place so you don't feel as terrible forking over the cash to help them out. Parking is behind the theaters and also, new, a ramp too. I find it great for dates when you need a changeup. Chino Latino + an indie film here? It just feels better than a Katherine Heigl terribad rom-com and walking in the skyway all scary downtown, or worse, a suburb. *shudder* read more

Lagoon Cinema is still a great theater for playing independent and foreign films, but they also play some of the Oscar-winning blockbusters now. I have to say it's a hard sell for me to pick Lagoon over the larger theaters if I have to sit in a sunken seat with a prominent spring when Marcus and AMC is offering reclining seats. Furthermore, you'll have to pay for parking, so the slightly cheaper ticket just doesn't make up for anything. Please Lagoon Cinema, please invest in some updates. This place gets 5 stars because more often than not, the movie I want to see is only showing here...and I'm never disappointed. Seriously, how many other theaters can you name that sell wasabi peas, Peace Coffee, almond-filled wafers and vegan cookies IN ADDITION to the standards? Not many. (I think someone from the Lagoon raided my pantry and decided to sell all my guilty pleasure snack food.) To give you a taste of the movies they show, I've seen "Milk," "You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger" and "Blue Valentine" and each theater has been cozy. Movie tickets cost around $9. Probably the only inconvenient thing about the Lagoon is the parking situation. You either have to pay to park in the adjacent lot, hope to score a spot on the street or park in a nearby neighborhood and walk. read more

I've lived in Minnesota 20 years and this is my first visit to this theater, only because I won tickets. It must be that people who live in St. Paul, especially from out of state, never get used to the parking in Mpls. They have a parking lot which charges by the hour. So we parked, walked to a restaurant then caught the show. The lobby and inside theater is art deco style, very immaculate. The movie is a foreign film called LET THE RIGHT ONE IN. A vampire theme, with two children having the lead roles. They both have a mesmerizing look, with acting to match. One thing I appreciated, is that the subtitles didn't detract from watching the movie. It even had a happy vampire ending. It officially starts Friday, and I would say it's definitely worth the trip. read more

1. The snacks at this place blow other theaters out of the water. You'll pay dearly for your pleasures ($5 for cookies, $5 for pop) but you have a wide selection of nice things to break your teeth on: fancy European wafer cookies, lattes, wasabi peas, cherry-coated almonds, etc. Beats the hell out of Milk Duds. 2. Do not park in their adjacent lot unless you want to pay through the nose. They validate for one hour, but the other $15 are on you. You can park for free on the street right next to Planned Parenthood two blocks down. 3. You can purchase tickets online so if, perhaps, you want to see Les Miserables on Christmas Day, you can ensure that your entire family can get in the theater. 4. As other reviewers mentioned, this theater gets the good stuff. And by good stuff I mean they did not show Breaking Dawn. A couple of misses here- one time it smelled like urine throughout our entire movie, and the bathrooms upstairs are usually dank, dirty, and broken. But overall this is a great place to catch a flick. read more

I really don't like going to the movies. I just really don't have the attention span for them, but normally, if I do go to the movies, this the location we tend to go to. It is really close to where I live so it makes sense. The last movie I watched here was "The Dark Knight", in which I fell a sleep not even half way into it.. This is why I hate theatres. Movies are boring sitting in a dark theatre with cozy seats does not help my case what so ever!!! I do have to point out, that each time we've come here, the staff had seemed pretty OK. Both helpful and nice.. which is somewhat of a rarity in customer service in uptown. The bathrooms are always pretty clean, and the staff does not hesitate to pick up trash in the aisles. I almost tripped over an attendant once because he was crouched down by my seat picking up trash in a dark theatre.. wow. I like it.. I don't, however, enjoy paying $9.00 to see one movie though. That is the other reason why I hate going to the movies..the price. I'd rather just wait until it is out on DVD, rent it, and that way I wouldn't have to worry about sleeping through it and wasting my money. Oh well, you can't win them all. read more

Went to see "The Best Movie Ever Sold" here last week. Like Ben D. said before me, this is the theater to see those films that are only being shown "in select theaters near you." Just a block down from the Landmark Uptown Theater but has a completely different feeling. There are mains stream and awesome documentaries and independent films shown here, they really have a wide array of films being shown. The screens are small with less seating than a typical theater but it still has a modern feel and plenty of leg room. A movie during prime hours cost 9 dollars - the expected price to pay in a big market area like Minneapolis. I love this theater because it isn't packed like an AMC and they have a great selection of movies. read more

This is the place where all of the first run international films and some limited release art house films will be shown. Well.. unless they're being shown at The Walker or The Uptown for some reason. It's kind of difficult to figure out why films end up at which venue. They all kind of field the same material. This one is more modern and comfortable than the nearly neighboring Uptown theater, but it caters to a more nose-breathing audience most of the time. My last memory of going here was to see Y Tu Mama Tambien and wished that I had brought a hotter date as the vibe was going to waste. read more

I never realized how awesome it would be to have a movie theatre within walking distance from my own home... and yet here we are. I can shlep up to the Lagoon any time I want to indulge in the crap factory of American cinema and know I am getting my money's worth. I love that they get limited release films, as they're usually the only ones I can get excited about. Ditto for the indies. I also appreciate the apathy of the workers; it's refreshing to know that the MN nice facade is alive and well, but still the truth leaks out like butter from the bottom of a popcorn bucket. I'm kind of ashamed to love it, but I do enjoy it so, so much. I also like getting their movie newsletters, which has a perfectly balanced ratio of shit to good shit. When they say "Now playing in select theaters!" They mean this place. I LOVE this theater. They show so many different kinds of movies. From independent films, to more popular movies like The Hangover II- I've never had a bad experience here. Now. If you're wanting a huge screen with surround sound and 3D, this isn't the place for you. But if you're a person that likes character and variety, what are you waiting for?? The Lagoon is just like all Landmark Theaters around the country, so it's no big deal that we have a place that shows some independent films. As much as I appreciate it, most cities of size have at least one. Landmark Theaters are a national chain just like UA or AMC, they all show the same movies across the nation, and they all have the price tag that comes along with it. PROS I like that they give me free reign over the portion of sour cream & onion-flavored powder that I pour on my popcorn. CONS I'm annoyed at the horrendous parking situation, the bathrooms on the 2nd floor that are so inconvenient for the mid-movie dash, and the nearly un-navigable show times on their website. read more

This place could use a but if a face lift, but it is nice that they are able to get certain limited run movies that are not at other theaters! When I walked into the theater I thought the lights in the theater were cool, they kind of looked like branches of a tree but what confused me is that they never shut them off. They were dimmed but not shut off. I spent most of the movie looking at them because I kept catching glimpses out of the corner of my eye. read more

I have this problem. I get motion sickness at movies. I know it isn't all that uncommon with the influx of shaky-cam films nowadays, but even with normal motion pictures, I can barely make it a half-hour in without feeling sick. I've missed many-a-movie based on this problem (and annoyed many-a-companion). IMAX movies are out of the question, and any theatre that doesn't have balcony seating or seats that go very far back are pretty much an impossibility, as well. So, I know the complaint about the Lagoon is that their screens are too small, but for me, it is the perfect theatre. If I sit in the back, it's not unlike watching a big screen television (which doesn't bother me). I appreciate the kinds of films they show here. I've seen many, many good indie and low-budget films at this theatre. The theatres are really clean, too. The staff seems to be attentive about cleanliness. Plus, they're super-friendly. I see a complaint is parking, but hi, it's Uptown. If you don't want to deal with parking or getting stuck in a parking garage for a few hours on a Saturday night, there's this really cool thing called a "bus". It transports you from one area to another, and you don't have to deal with traffic or parking. Try it. I'm pretty sure it's not any higher priced than any of the other movie theatres in the area, but don't quote me on that. I've not done any research whatsoever. read more

This is my favorite theater, and I'll tell you why. 1. It is close and convenient to where I live, letting me walk in the spring/summer/fall or otherwise park on street 3-4 blocks away. 2. The selection of movies is a mix of mainstream wide releases and independent pictures. 3. Friendly staff, who try their best to get an up-sell on concessions, but overall do a decent job in other areas. 4. The first showings of the day are cheaper (not anything special) but it does help if you can get there early. 5. The screens are average, with decent seating for the most part (not like the Landmark Edina theater, which always feels like coach airline seats). However the biggest reason I love this location is that the patrons are for the most part mature (and do not bring their kids), and have all come to enjoy a movie. There have been no rude patrons at this theater almost every time I have gone. I've had a few experiences where I've watched a deeply serious movie with 20-30 other people and a pin didn't drop the whole time. I sat transfixed and was sucked in with zero distractions. Even during comedies, there was just dignified respect demonstrated for the other patrons. I typically go to the first or later showings, but have had this experience in the evenings as well. When I go to a larger cinema, with rowdy, over-sociable and juvenile patrons, it always reminds me why I will prefer to come here to have the best chance of seriously appreciating a quality film (in sweet, golden silence). read more

I went here with a friend to see 12 Years a Slave. I was pleasantly surprised to find a small and quaint theater. I had some leftover food which the Lagoon gladly refriderated while I watched the movie with a friend. Also, ticket price was very reasonable and free parking on Sunday. read more

Ha ha. I think I referred to The Lagoon as The Monsoon in my Southdale review. Lagoon... Monsoon... All tropical. You can see the confusion, right? Well, I love film... Really. And, I really love my indie film. I see 2 distinct worlds in my... Wait. I can say it like the movie guy. Imagine rhythmic, swelling music. "In a world where the strange and mundane don't mix, a man finds a crack in reality that threatens to tear everything he holds dear... APART! This summer, experience the terror. Experience the pain. Experience the mystery! LAGOON! This movie has not yet been rated." OK, back to the non-movie guy speak. One day I saw "The Hurt Locker" there. Now that felt right. Another day I saw Star Trek there. That felt wrong in so many ways, I still feel weird about it. You don't show Star Trek there... c'mon! There are too many great movies out there that will not get shown because you show crap like Star Trek there instead. Let Star Trek show at the 35 other theaters in the area where it is going to attract its largest audience anyway... and I will be much happier seeing in its appropriately appointed bodacious glory, clearly over the heads of all of the 6'5" midwesterners packed into the stadium arena seats. Sheesh... It's not like your speakers can handle the Dolby THX 31.0 Digital Surround. Keep to the indie stuff. Every time I go by I see more "Harry Potters" than "An Education"s. I wouldn't be surprised if they're showing the new Twilight. Rant over. Lagoon has an indie appropriate shoddiness and non-stadium seat-i-ness that I'm totally fine with, in an... Admittedly I've been here dozens of times and have really considered it my primary movie theater for some time; even more so since they began running selections from wide-release movies. And the great part is they haven't cut the number of the limited release films. Parking is only frustrating if you don't use the lot, but there's nothing bad about a short walk from one of the side streets. I signed up for their newsletter via the website for info and access to pre-screening drawings, usually a few days to a week prior to its normal opening. read more

You know when you see those movie trailers, and at the VERY end they say "Playing in select theaters only, near you"??? THIS is the theater they are talking about. I have seen some completely obscure films here, but they are all AMAZING! Some of the best movies I have ever seen were playing at this theater, and they don't usually even make it to the shelves of your local shopping center. The typical viewing age here does need to be 17+ as they infrequently have anything here rated less than that... although lately I have noticed more... kid friendly... options. One thing, the mega-mammoth-huge-multi-cineplex feeling has all but stayed away from here. You get a small screen, FAR fewer seats, and almost no parking. It's like God him/herself designed it! People who don't normally come here, don't come here. So you typically will get to see the show you want, won't be in there with loud or crazy people, and it's actually CLEAN! I can't wait to see what's playin on the Marquee next time I am down at Stella's! read more

The seats here are quite uncomfortable, and there's no stadium seating. The food offerings are nothing special. The location makes parking difficult. But this is often the only theater you can go to if you want to see good movies with more limited appeal. I'll still suck it up and go here, but I wish the experience were better. The Lagoon is a convenient place to see movies that you often can't see anywhere else. It's a well-enough-located spot in Uptown, and you're better off using transit to get here because parking sucks; but it's Uptown, so why bother driving unless you absolutely must. Just take a bus. The biggest thing about the Lagoon is that you're probably going to be watching the movie with other like-minded individuals who appreciate good cinema. I recently saw Wes Anderson's Moonrise Kingdom here, and the place was packed with Wes Anderson fans. That made the whole movie experience more inclusive and cool, because everyone was so into it. Hence, there were none of the random people who just came to talk during the movie and making arses of themselves. The Lagoon is in an old building that doesn't have a lot of modern amenities. It's small, but the seats are OK and the screen looks fine, as long as you're not expecting the latest technology. The key is they run movies you can't find elsewhere in Minneapolis. For that alone, it rules. You can get a little popcorn and a small soda for $8, which ain't bad, considering. The popcorn was a little too buttery/greasy last time, though. The Lagoon is the kind of place you can actually remember seeing a movie at, years later. I remember seeing Dogma here long ago because the place was so packed and excited for the movie.
