What a great venue! Came here to see a documentary for Sound Unseen and really enjoyed it! Everything about this cinema makes it perfect for anyone who loves film. It's small and intimate, so every seat in the house is a good one. The sound is great, so if you're off to enjoy a film featuring a great soundtrack, you're in for a treat. There's a small concession stand with beverages, popcorn, and candy if you're hungry, and bathrooms that are decorated with iconic bathroom scenes--a fun touch. This is far and away the best movie theater. Honestly if it wasn't there, I wouldn't be into movies at all. Everything is clean, the prices are sane, and the movie selection is incredible. I've watched movies that I've never heard of that are better than anything the regular theaters have 11 months out of the year. It's not all obscure movies. There Will Be Blood is coming up, for example. But they're all well-chosen, like a human is deciding based on what's a good movie. Before each movie, there's maybe two or three minutes on what movies are coming up. And then the movie starts. Both of those are improvements on the big-box theater experience, where 25 minutes of ads is the norm, and occasionally whoever's up there isn't paying attention and doesn't start the movie on time. This has happened to me at both Roseville AMC and Marcus Oakdale. There are 90 seats and 5 parking spots. There's also on-street parking in every direction so I always manage to find a spot within a block or so, but I usually manage to get into the parking lot because I like to show up early, get concessions, dig through the movies for sale shelf, and settle in for a good show. read more

Of course I love the Trylon; as a lover of the movies and cinema history, it's hard not to love a charming little temple to movies and cinema history. This location is a new iteration of the Trylon Microcinema which moved from around the corner in the mid 2010s. If you're only familiar with the old location, you'll be pleased to know they now have screenings most nights of the week, and are outfitted with comfortable new seats. No stadium seating and no footrests, but as luxurious as those amenities are, I wouldn't change the atmosphere of the Trylon with anything like that. They have a modern digital projection system, but they also have a 35mm projector and, out of reverence to the classic moviegoing experience, they will use that whenever they can get their hands on a presentable celluloid print. They put their calendar together lovingly and intelligently, and if you have any curiosity about checking out a movie that has stood the test of time, a glance at their upcoming screenings is very likely to attract you into their dainty urban auditorium. Buying tickets online in advance is highly recommended. Showings often sell out, plus the seating is unassigned. The concession stand has a modest selection of candy in addition to popcorn and drinks; all of it is reasonably priced compared with what you get at first-run movie theaters (and considering the drinks are all in cans or bottles). It's cash only at the counter for food & tickets, which is another good reason to get your tickets online. This is a very satisfying venue for anyone who is passionate about movies. If you plan your visit in advance you will very likely have an awesome time, so keep their listings handy. read more

I went to Trylon for the first time and it was AMAZING!!! If you are a fan of the offbeat this is your place. It's run by volunteers that love film and it shows. They have theme nights - we went on the third Wednesday of the month which is Trash Film Debauchery night. The first Wednesday of the month is Tape Freaks where you show up and don't know what the movie will be. The regular line up has films that you won't find anywhere else in the Twin Cities. It's cheap, it's fun, it's run by passionate cool people. Well, this is pretty much one of the most unique and coolest places in the Twin Cities. They show unique and retro movies in a comfortable space. Ever heard of queercore?* Neither had I, but they presented a great documentary about it and I learned a lot. Wanna see obscure silent movies from 100 years ago with a live trio performing the score? Trylon's already been there and done that! If they have anything remotely interesting there, go. And it's unlikely that they won't have something there that isn't interesting. *Queercore was/is a punk movement that shunned the fascist fringes and set to establish the identity of the LGBTQ+ minority within the music scene. It's a fascinating period in music history. read more

This is a 50 seat microcinema that screens classic and independent movies. You enter their space through the door on Minnehaha and walk through a hallway that will lead you to their very small concession area. They have canned soda and water for sale ($1) and plenty of candy for a nominal fee. The theater is tiny and incredibly intimate. I sat in the very front row. Usually I avoid the front row at all costs, but it was fine. I'd probably opt for a seat in the back next time though. I will definitely come back to Trylon. I am not sure if you can screen the same movies anywhere else in such a nice space. Tickets are less than $10 each. The crowd seems to be intelligent and polite. If you're a fan of classic movies I highly recommend trying them out. Staff are also very friendly. Parking is extremely easy. read more

I'm a fan of the Trylon. They show crazy, unique movies, whether they are 70-year-old noir pictures or just trashy films from the 80s. The theater is small but once you get seated the comforts are as good as most theaters, with plush, creaky seats close to the screen. The screen itself doesn't compare to modern theaters but it's plenty big for this intimate space. The staff is very friendly and all very supportive of the theater's mission, which more or less is to provide an alternative to the typical Hollywood movie-going experience and to show films that are either forgotten, lost or overlooked by most audiences. My one gripe would be on the popcorn. Unlike the affiliated Heights Theater on Central, the popcorn here is rather crunchy, unseasoned and tough. You get too many unpopped seeds and it's a bit difficult and unsatisfying. Please, Trylon, get a new popcorn machine and I'd be more likely to pop in for a flick. Thanks! read more

I can only reiterate what others have said about the thoughtful selection of movies, intimate venue and general awesomeness of this theater. Two things to add: (1) Most people say this place is not good for kids. It's true that the movies shown are usually pretty adult and there's nothing specifically designed to appeal to younger people. But before the screening of Hellboy, the entire staff engaged my 7 year old son and me in a longish discussion of comic superheroes. He had a great experience! (2) The concession selection includes usual movie fare including popcorn and standard boxes of candy (Dots, Raisinettes, etc.) They also sell more upscale bars of chocolate. Soda comes in cans and bottles and there is a decent selection of the usual and slightly unusual. read more

This is one of my favorite movie theaters. Microcinema, indeed. This place seats 30-40 people, so it's an intimate setting. With this size, I feel like the amount of jerks that talk during the movie are dramatically downsized. This place has a gallery in the front, cinema in the back. I've seen some really cool art on display here, but I've only seen stuff on display less than half the time I've come in. They have concessions, which I've never taken advantage of, but the prices seem comparable. Tickets are $10, so they are competitive with normal prices. The movie selection here is top notch. You are always bound to find something interesting and artsy. Definitely eclectic. (which tends to weed out the obnoxious gum snappin teens) The people who work here are nice and helpful. The Trylon is part of Take Up Productions, Take Up Productions also runs The Heights Theater in Inver Grove Heights. The Heights is worth the hike, it's a super gorgeous movie theater! read more

I came here for the first time a few weeks ago to see "The Happiness of the Katakuris" for Trash Film. I rarely get over to this neck of the woods, and I wasn't quite sure if we were in the right place as the Trylon seemed so tiny. But that, as it turned out, was what made it flippin awesome. There's a small art gallery area in the lobby, then there is quite literally a room through which you pass to obtain popcorn and then you're there. About 50ish people can cram into the tiny theatre, and you feel like you're just in a large living room with a bunch of strangers who are now friends. My first experience here was perfect, and I even got a sweet free poster print for the Katakuris that happily lives on my fridge. I love that they show rare, random, classic, and downright wtf-inducing films here. I have filled my calendar with my picks for the next few months and am stoked to be one of the Trylon's new biggest fans. read more

Great theater. It's a bit small, but that's okay. I got to go after the remodel, and things are very nice. They've got new seats, and they're plenty comfortable. The A/C was working just fine, which was a big deal because it's was about 90F and humid outside. I got to see The Great Dictator, and it was very cool. The live band to begin things was a fun touch. All things considered, I wouldn't hesitate to come back soon. They've got a bunch of Halloween movies coming up that are way cool. Popcorn was quite good, too. They don't take CCs at the concession stand, which is a bummer. But, at least I can pay for tickets ahead of time using plastic. Also, Peace Coffee is next door, which I took advantage of because I was looking for an ice coffee. read more

I've never been to a theater this small before and I really liked it. Came here to see the John Carpenter classic Halloween ( my favorite horror movie ever). They show a unique variety of movies like foreign and cult classics. The concession area is small with your basic popcorn (which has fun seasoning options) candy and cans of soda for sell (CASH ONLY). Most importantly the staff was nice oh and the chairs are comfy, i almost fell asleep. If you're looking to have a low key movie experience that won't break your bank give the Trylon a try. read more

After almost going to the Trylon several times, we actually went last night. We were both really surprised at how nice it was. For some reason we thought it would basically be folding chairs with a stand-up screen. But, no, it is a scaled down version of a regular movie theater with comfy(enough) chairs and a 20 ft screen. The sound and lighting was great. I look forward to seeing lots more movies there. Love that they show lots of noir films and other movies you won't find at other theaters. read more

Such a nice little gem in Minneapolis. They screen very rare, Independent and Foreign classics on 35 millimeter and do phenomenal director series as well as local film festivals. Being one of the World's biggest film buffs, I'm so grateful to have this in Minneapolis to watch some of my favorites on original prints with other film admirers as well as being exposed to new and delightful Classic and modern cinema! read more
