I had to get a bunch of art supplies for my upcoming watercolor class and instead of buying it all on Amazon I made the journey to Laguna Art Supply. What a great decision that was! Not only am I supporting a local business, but I got supreme assistance in selecting my paints, brushes, paper and other supplies by the sales clerk, Elizabeth, who was extremely knowledgeable and, in fact, a highly accomplished artist herself! I definitely would not have done nearly as well if I had tried to buy the stuff online. And I had more fun! read more

The have a bit of everything. I would say that is a double edged sword. They have items for potters, paintings, children, fabric artists, vintage clothing, books, crafts, etc. So everyone can probably find a bit of what they need. However it means what they have is limited. You may not be able to find your favorite brand or favorite color of blue paint, but you can find blue paint in about every medium. read more

They really should call this little Art Store by the Sea the "Hodge-Podge-Garage Art Lodge!!!" It is a splendid little mess inside that store! Once you step inside, you will see an assortment of high-end paint knives, and paint brushes, then a wall of highly pigmented, high-end, high priced paints! Oils, acrylics, watercolors - oh my! They carry the best brands!!!! (Call the bank and take out a loan!) I had to buy an Ampersand 16 X 20 " flat gesso board today, and none of the other art stores carry this brand because it is very high-end. One friendly and helpful lady helped to locate the proper canvas for my art class that I'm taking, and they give art students 20% off. Just be sure to tell them you are an art student. I wandered around the store for a long time- ( mortals fall into a deep spell while shopping in this artsy-fartsy place) - and I found unexpected items strewn all over the place. (Is this where the Muse hangs out? I hear this is her secret hiding place!) It made me smile! If you are in need of a purse, or a fashionable necklace to bring to your art class, they have it here. Do you need a painting apron? They have many to choose from. If you need to brew a pot of tea, they have teapots. Do you need to store magic seeds in glass jars? They have a bevy of jars! No two are the same! If tonight is bowling night, they even have a bowling ball in there for you! (not joking!) If you need baskets, they have baskets. If you are in need of an easel, canvases, clay, embroidery thread, pencils, markers and framing - Laguna Art Supply has it all! Does your street need a new stop sign at the corner? They even have a stop sign in that store for sale! It's a kick and a giggle to shop there! Their prices are not low. So bring your piggy bank, and break the bank! This is a fun place to shop. They have the hard-to-find-art-supplies that Michael's and Hobby Lobby don't stock. I love Michael's and Hobby Lobby too, don't get me wrong. They totally ROCK! This place really is a gem! It's a total artist paradise. I've been meaning to write this post for a while, they definitely deserve some over due credit. When you go in it's what you expect from a place that has it all. It's not small but a bit crowded so you may have to ask for your specifics. They had a brush cleaner that I can hardly Find anywhere for a moderate price so I was thrilled with that find. There is a frame shop in the back as well and the options looked endless. I'm sure prices are more than when you go to Michaels with a 40% off coupon but let me tell you... if u need it they have it, and their knowledge about different supplies are great. Friendly, helpful, and abundant. I'll miss not having it up the road from me anymore but will definitely be a stop when in Laguna. read more

One of my favorite stores, ever and for many years. But the lady who was there this morning (Saturday 4/10 around 10:30am) seemed very disinterested in helping customers and actually gave me incorrect information (I am happy to hear 'I am not sure' or 'I do not know'). However after I came home and researched my questions: Do I need to seal my acrylic, oil, pencil, and watercolor paintings? I found out she was totally wrong ... and then I realized/thought about how she was quiet rude when I happily and gratefully said 'Goodbye and Thank You!' when I left (she did not look up) I love to support our local community... but will do so in Dana Point, or Laguna Niguel.... next time!!! read more

We are so fortunate to have Laguna Art Supply in town. They have a large and varied selection of materials and supplies that are high in quality. In addition, I like to look at color choices, touch textures (watercolor paper and materials) and pick out my supplies in person; this can't be achieved through on-line shopping. The staff at Laguna Art Supply are all knowledgeable and helpful. The framing department is excellent. I especially like that there is a designated parking space (City approved), specifically for customers of Laguna Art Supply, to drop off or pick up oversized art for framing. read more

I suppose Laguna Art Supply can be considered the little local art supply store for downtown Laguna. The quaint little brick storefront hides a surprisingly deep and slightly dimly lit store that includes a framing department. Every wall and shelf is overflowing with a decent variety of art supplies, crafting supplies, and general random trinkets. It's almost like walking into an art cave of sorts. I suppose my biggest gripe about this place, however, are the prices. Everything is marked way up. Now, I know Laguna Beach is crawling with rich old people in their Porsches (seriously, I've seen more Porsches since I started college here than I had in my entire life) and I'm sure rent in downtown Laguna is brutal. But as an art student, the prices here are a little ridiculous. Even a rather thin pad of 18x24 smooth newsprint will run you about $10-11, something I could probably get for almost half that much somewhere else. The cheapest pencil extender they have is around $5-6, something I could probably get for a buck or two (or cheaper) at Art Supply Warehouse. Prices are written on most items, but if you find something like a piece of spare matboard or an interesting thingamabob that doesn't have a price on it, you can bargain a little at the register. A friend of mine was able to bargain down an ornate metal box she found from about $15 down to maybe $11. The people here are pretty knowledgeable about what they carry and friendly enough. If you're a student, I think you can get a 20% discount if you ask nicely. I go to school at Laguna College of Art and Design, which is just a couple minutes up Laguna Canyon Rd from this place, so it's definitely convenient for if I need to pick up something last minute before class or I need something I wouldn't otherwise be able to find at Michaels or Aaron Brothers also at the last minute (like open stock prismacolor veritithins or the aforementioned smooth newsprint). But if I can help it, I'd rather make the 25-30 minute drive out to Art Supply Warehouse or San Clemente Art Supply and get twice as much bang for my buck as I would at Laguna Art Supply. read more

I have been going to this store for years and realized that they have been so wonderful and helpful to me , I really needed to write a review. Besides being an institution and a very special part of Laguna History , it's one of the coolest , most interesting and eclectic places you can visit in Laguna. Besides having anything any artist in any medium would need , there's an assortment of really unique Knick Knacks , books, toys, cards and even vintage clothes that the owner has assembled over the years. Also an absolutely delightful kids section. And Gary runs an excellent and reasonable framing service in the back. My favorite employee Liz, is not only a brilliant Artist who has a booth at the sawdust , she is incredibly kind , positive and supportive of Artists whether you're a total novice or a master. She has helped me with my Art so much I can't thank her enough. This place is a Laguna Treasure, kudos to Noel and Sandy ! read more

First off, I am thankful that Laguna has an art supply shop within the city limits. As a 4th generation Lagunatic, I try my best to support the local businesses regardless of higher prices (hey, rent is ridiculous here...what do you expect?). It's great that when I need a last minute item for an art project, I know that I can run downtown and most likely get what I need. Walking into the store always makes me happy, and even inspires me to try new projects. Why? Because there is SO MUCH STUFF in this store, you're bound to see something interesting that you want to give-a-go. The further you walk into the store, the more trinkets you'll find... almost like a thrift shop of sorts {but without that weird smell}. The employees are friendly and can help you with anything you need! I think the core of the staff has been working there forever, so they can certainly help with any obscure questions that are thrown at them. I've also gotten a plethora of items framed here over the years...all have turned out fantastically! Check out this store if your an artist or just a visitor. I asked if they had a brand of paint and they said, "we only carry professional grade." Thought it was an unnecessary comment since it was a yes or no question. Didn't really care about it being professional grade paint or not since I was doing a YouTube video comparing it to other brands. Besides some artists don't use professional materials and they create phenomenal work. Can never find what I need in this store, and it's expensive. read more

I am a Laguan local and I try to support Laguna businesses whenever possible, even if it means spending more money. Mostly its because I hate driving or leaving town. I took my diploma and a frame I had here to get re-matted. It was so convenient because I can walk here from my house. I have never had anything matted before so I was pretty clueless as far as cost and time it would take to finish. I already had a frame and the diploma but it needed matting that fit. I chose two layers, in my school colors; thats it, nothing fancy, just matting to fit a standard diploma. It came to $89.17 for two layers of matting and I guess "labor"? Holy guacamole I could have practically bought a new frame and matting with one of those mass produced images from my campus that comes as a set for that price. Not only that but I thougt it would take um like a day? No he said "ya it will be ready it a couple weeks, Im super busy right now". Are you growing trees and hand dying the matt paper to create this work of art or what? And he was right, it took exactly two weeks. I try to support local Laguna biz no matter what but this is crazy. So I probably wont go here for my next framing job, which is sad. But unfortunately I know I will be back for my art supplies and random stationary items, because hey I can walk and at least I am saving gas money. In conclusion, take your framing somewhere else unless you have too much money and time on your hands. I LOVE Laguna Art Supply! In addition to having everything I've ever needed for my own art projects, they've got tons of kids art supplies, and tattoos, little toys, etc. AND!!! they sell funky antiques that the owner apparently finds at garage sales! They're great for props for my photo shoots, and they are fabulous for still lifes, etc. And everyone that works there is so friendly and helpful! It really is a great place.... read more

I LOVE this art store. It's an ART STORE. (They do have a framing section, though.) You don't have wade through piles of half-opened crap that a "home crafter" had second thoughts about, you can explore the nooks & crannies undisturbed & you will almost ALWAYS find what you want. I like Swain's in Glendale, but get too overwhelmed between the stuffed animals and junk art novelty stuff. THIS store has papers, paints, paintbrushes and all the other things you will need (inks, too). I like the owner (who warned me about getting ticketed for not parking correctly) and just the general "feeling" of this store. If you are with me regarding McManus & Morgan & Century Books, this is a place will love. If you want mass produced art supplies for your kid's class, don't make the drive. read more

I was so stressed out about having to go buy art supplies for my classes but I walked in and found that the store was very well organized and easy to navigate. The woman working knew where everything was and was incredibly helpful in finding everything and helping to calm my nerves about prices. She gave me the most affordable deals and made sure that I had all of the supplies I would need for class. It's very small and charming, and also part eclectic thrift store. They have a TON of stuff crammed in here, but it's very organized and clearly laid out. Also, it's pretty pricey. I moved from a city that had numerous art supply stores and all of them rocked. So, I was surprised when I moved to Orange County to encounter a dearth of art supply stores- what the heck? There's a huge one in Westminster but a trek if you live in south OC, so your next best option is Laguna Art Supply. That is, unless you consider Michaels (and no artist does) an 'art' store. Laguna Art Supply is a great little shop, so fun to look around in, as there is everything from art supplies to found objects, knick knacks and vintage items. My only problem, however, is that its stock is eclectic (which is fun) but unreliable for an art supply store. If you paint, for example, expect to find about half of what you need. Yes, they have (overpriced) canvases, and yes they have both oil and acrylic. Are they the brand you want? Probably not. Are they the colours you want? Maybe, though there isn't a full range within a professional brand. Will you find mediums? Maybe a tiny expensive bottle. And that's the other thing: I love that it's a small local shop, I want to support that, however, being an artist it's difficult to consistently spend more money than I would at a large chain that has a fuller inventory and frequent sales. read more

I have had many pieces of original artwork framed here over the years. I needed one reframed and in doing so they used tape that bled through the artwork, ruining it. A few months before I had them frame 3 pieces of original art I bought with my inheritance. These are works by well-known artists, cannot be replaced, and cost $20,000. I just took them to a framer used by the Orange County Art Museum and had them opened up. The framers at Laguna Art Supply used poor quality mat board and tape which has already burned through the artwork. I can frame over the damage, but this is investment quality art. IT IS RUINED! I'm in the process of having all of the other work they have done opened up. So far, everything is ruined. I'm literally sick about it! read more
