We had a wonderful time! Theo was an excellent instructor who put us immediately at ease and was very personable and down to earth. Our youngest was very nervous to do it by herself and he said he could ride with him and if she felt comfortable enough she could try by herself. The look of immediate relief on her face was almost comical. She loved riding with him and felt very safe and reassured by his presence. Thanks for making our trip so memorable!!

This is an amazing crew that truly wants to share the love for surfing and the ocean with their clients. We booked three private lessons and they made certain we all came away with a fantastic experience. We also saw a seal, turtles and whales! So lucky!!

Headed out to surf

Jedi and Chyna instructed our four kids today. The kids have never surfed before and had the BEST time! Chyna had our 8 year old and he thrived with her. In fact, he just told us it was the best part of his vacation so far. Jedi had the two 12 year olds and 14 year old and they had the best time ever. All the kids were ready for the biggest meal after all their hard work. I couldn't recommend LahAina Surf Shack more! Thank you Jedi and Chyna for giving the kids the best time on the water.

First of all, Aina was very helpful with booking and answering our questions. Our surf instructor Ricky was awesome! He was completely knowledgeable & experienced with surfing! It definitely showed while teaching us how to surf! He is very patient & instructs to get the best out of us, which helped a lot! Got us out there to get some good runs in! We would definitely recommend Ricky & the LahAina Surf Shack! Mahalo!

First time surfing, one of her first waves. She learned so quickly.

I'd genuinely give them a million stars if I could. Our 8 year old is cautious and nervous about most things. She was scared to snorkel but wanted to try surfing- go figure. We signed her up for a private lesson. I highly recommend the private lesson especially for kiddos. Ricky, the instructor was so funny, so patient, and really good at reading our daughter. You could tell he knew what he was doing. Safety was most important and they went over the basics before they went out on the water. She caught her first wave and Ricky gradually had her do more and more of the process on her own. Towards the end she was doing a lot on her own and fell off a couple times- that's normal. He was really receptive to her emotions and encouraging. I'm not joking when I tell you my husband and I had our jaws wide open. We were so proud of her and in shock at how much she loved it for a girl who is teeeified of most things. Ever since being back, she has been telling us the riddles Ricky was telling her and she won't stop talking about how funny he was. She gave him a thumbs up- something she rarely gives out. Just be aware that it's tiring. Our daughter is pretty athletic and she was still pretty sore afterwards. It did not stop her from walking down the beach, playing in the ocean, or going swimming in the pool though. As a parent I'd have lots to drink, some snacks ready, and be prepared for a possible car nap. When she started to feel frustrated at the end, we all, including Ricky, assured her that she did great. She can't wait to try again. Literally could not recommend them more. She has already asked her dad for a surf board and to help her research surfing spots near our house in California. Not only did she learn to surf, she gained confidence, she fell off and got back up, and she is really proud of herself for trying something new. I attribute this to Ricky's personality, patience, clear instructions, and funny jokes to keep up the fun our on the water.

Our family had an amazing lesson with Carter today. Great communication to the meetup point and he made it a fun and positive experience for our 11 & 13 year olds first time surfing. Thank you so much!

My fiancé and I went to Maui this summer and had a desire to do a surf lesson. Lahaina Surf Shack was very responsive in our communication and we were able to book a 2 hour session last minute. Our instructor, Ricky, was awesome! He instructed us on the proper technique and gave us immediate feedback on what we did wrong/ right after every wave. Both of us were able to stand up within our second or third try and caught so many waves that day. The experience was awesome and the next time we come to Maui we are definitely getting another surf lesson.

Went to a beach and saw a bunch of surfers and wanted to rent some boards. We were directed to this surf shop for rentals and I'm so glad we went. We were welcomed by a sweet lady at the register and she picked out boards for us since we had no clue what we were doing. Very friendly staff, great rentals, and made for a great experience.

Great place, great instruction! Had a ton of fun learning the basics of surfing. Funny and friendly staff. You can also rent boards and paddle boards. Saw sea turtles and fish in area where they took us while I paddle boarded. Highly recommend!

We booked surf lessons via our hotel in advance of our trip. The surf school reached out to us a…read moreday before and told us our afternoon slot was cancelled, but we could be rescheduled to a morning slot, or get a refund. We picked the morning slot, then received instructions to go to mile marker 19 on Lahaina highway and look for a white Tacoma. We had decided to skip the rental car and use Lyft/Uber on this trip, so that was concerning. We were able to instruct the driver about the approximate location. There was a a row of pickup trucks with surfboards near mile marker 19, so we got out and asked around for Royal Hawaiian Surf Academy. Eventually we found the right Tacoma, but I didn't have much confidence we'd found the right spot for a while. My daughter had to have a solo lesson with Kayla due to her age, while my son and I had a semi private lesson with Chad. Our instructors were great, and we were able to stand up with a couple of tries, and a few turns later the instructor had me try a smaller board so I could turn more easily. About 1 1/2 hour into our two hour lessons both my son and felt salt water stinging our knees and lower thighs from chafing against the board, so we ended the lesson early. We were also pretty tired at that point. The surf school gave us long sleeved water shirts, but knee long shorts in the same fabric would have made big difference too. Our instructor told us the chafing is because they use teaching surf boards with a material that has more friction to make it easier to stand on the board, but it also causes more chafing than boards with wax. In the hurry to catch our car ride, we forgot to bring water, but my daughter's instructor very kindly gave us one of her personal water bottles. Thank you Kayla! All in all, we had a great introduction to surfing with a lot of successful attempts to catch waves. Two hours felt long for an intro session. I wish my instructor had told me to paddle a bit more easy out to save strength for catching waves but I also tend to go max all the time until I run out of gas. Above all, I highly recommend wearing at least knee long water shorts to prevent chafing knees and lower thighs. The instructors were amazing. If Royal Hawaiian Surf Academy also were to provide pants and water given the remote location, if say they would stand way up and above the competition.

I booked a private lesson and I had a great time surfing with Nick, my instructor! Would absolutely recommend a private lesson for more attention and coaching. Surf conditions are a variable. We had some pretty big swells for beginner waves, according to Nick, but I think I did alright! A little longer and I think I could have gotten to standing. I would try this again for sure and refine my technique a little! The length of the lesson is great (1.5-2h). As much as I would have loved more time out there, you do get pretty gassed out by the end, so it's the right amount of time. Booking was easy online. I called to ask some questions and Kevin (Owner) was very informative. Meeting point was pretty easy to find. I received a picture of where to meet but given the recent washout rain, the landscape looks a little different. You can still match some of the trees though. It's across from where folks are parked all the time to go surfing. It's a pretty popular spot. I took a Lyft out to Mile Marker 19 which is pinned on the map, thankfully. The local drivers also just know where to go. There is not a nearby bus stop, but Lahaina Cannery Mall is probably the closest one and just over an hour's walk away. Nick easily found me waiting on the sand in the morning. He had everything I needed (12' board, shoes - both in great condition). They also provide rash guards but the suit I was wearing was already long sleeved. We started on land going through theory. When you book, there are videos in the confirmation email which are very helpful to review. Nick explained things very well, and helped make me aware of some beginner traps. Throughout the lesson he made sure I was safe as well as the surfers around me. There's a traffic flow to follow and knowing he was there supporting me with his experience allowed me to focus on learning to surf. I also appreciated his expert technique in paddling out and assisting me by towing a couple times, haha! I would have given 5 stars but there was issue with the photography package I purchased. Would not recommend, based on my experience. It's done through Aloha Maui Photography and you pay on site if you like the photos (you get a little preview on the tablet). The usual way seemed to be to Airdrop the photos, but I don't have an iPhone. Alyssa said she would email me a link later that day or the next day, but I didn't receive anything. After a few days, I went to the online webpage and submitted a form on the "Contact" page, asking to follow up. After a couple more days, I emailed directly. I got a response to my email after 2 days. It seemed that Alyssa thought that I was a different surfer (with a family and that my photos were already AirDropped to my mother) and that she no longer has the photos because they're cleared as she's constantly shooting. I explained that I was mixed up with who she thought I was since I was solo, and if the photos were indeed already cleared, if I could get a refund. It's now been two weeks, with another follow up, and still unresolved. I am disappointed because I was really hoping for some photos from my first surfing experience, which is why I splurged on the photo package. Just one more note - additional recommendation as a beginner, if you can do rash guard shorts, my inner thighs above the knee took a bit of a beating from straddling the board!

It was easy to try when we knew every attempt would be met with joy. It was incredibly helpful that even with a group lesson, we each had our own surf coach; we could each learn at our own paces and our coaches were able to give us personalized instruction. The equipment was top-of-the-line and really helped novice surfers like ourselves. The boards were light and forgiving and much better than typical foam boards. Not only were we able to get several waves, we also learned a bunch about surfing, the area, and a lot more. What stood out most is that these guys clearly care about the people they're teaching. They showed up with great surfboards, rash guards, and even a hat my daughter loved, and they made sure we were taken care of every step of the way. The whole experience felt safe, easy, and well-organized -- they knew exactly where to go, how to meet up, and how to make the logistics simple. I'm extremely uncoordinated -- I can barely roller skate -- and somehow I was able to get up almost immediately and catch several waves. My daughter also felt cared for and encouraged the whole time. There was always someone close by, so we never felt like we were just out there on our own not knowing what to do. They also had water afterward to help us rinse off and were just helpful, friendly, and fun to talk to about surfing and the area. For the value, it honestly felt like an incredible deal: basically two instructors for two hours, with top-notch service, at a very reasonable price. Even at twice the price, I would have felt like it was worth it. Highly recommend, especially for beginners or families. It was one of the best experiences of our trip.
