Ambiance is irrelevant because that isn't their goal. It's to make good food, which this place is maybe a place I'd go if I had $5 to my name and needed a meal. The lack of bacon and ranch is one thing but the food was so bland. It tasted like hamburger helper in between. I'm pregnant so everything usually is good to me when I'm hungry. We were in the Hodgenville area and had heard that this place was the place to go for a good, cheap meal. The locale is in a tiny little shop in the middle of downtown. But be advised that it's cash only! This is one of the most amazing burger places I have ever visited. The staff is attentive and friendly; you can not go wrong with this family-owned business. Excellent burgers made from scratch. It has been in business since 1934, so it must be doing it right. This place is regularly voted the best burger in the Bluegrass State and lives up to the hype. A perfect slice of Americana, walking into this place feels like going back in time. I had the Double Hamburger, and my wife had the Double Cheeseburger. We also had French Fries and Onion Rings. The onion rings are huge, and the breading does not fall off when you take a bite. If you are ever in Hodgenville, you must try this place! read more

My partner and I have been customers of Laha's since the 1980s. The burgers aren't bad, but they don't taste the same as they once did -- a comment my partner made on Facebook over a year ago. Recently, my partner went to the restaurant and was told he was no longer welcome because of that past comment. The owner recognized him, yelled profanities, and called him vulgar names. This interaction was unexpected and inappropriate. Because of the owner's behavior, we won't be returning. I can't recommend this business due to how customers are treated. read more

This is as classic as the get. The quintessential diner: Only counter seating, cheap food (that is outstanding), well staffed, and fast. This little place is the heart of the town. If the town is anything like the staff, I believe the area would be a great place to live. LaHa's Red Castle (pronounced Lay-hay's) was a pleasant surprise. While visiting the nearby Lincoln Birthplace, a local volunteer told me it should be on my radar for a local dive. The place is SMALL. Tiny. There's only a soda fountain type counter with about ten (10) seats. The small area means people standing against the wall behind you while awaiting their food. It's awkward; people constantly reaching over you, between you and others. I overheard one of the ladies behind the counter say there's no personal space in there. Truth. The burgers are tiny...I finished the burger in 4 bites, but price was as small as the burger, so if anything...it was my fault as a newbie not ordering two! This was going to be a 4-star review, but once I got used to all the people around, I started listening. Everyone knows everyone in this little town (or at least it seems). It was homey, friendly, almost like all these people were family. I mean, makes sense, this place has been around four generations. What a tradition. One of the owners (I assume) even let me snag a photo of a photo of President Eisenhower in front of LaHa's when they were still just a shack! If I ever go back to Lincoln's birthplace, I'm definitely headed back to LaHa's! read more

Not bad, not bad! We were in the Hodgenville area and had heard that this place was the place to go for a good, cheap meal. The locale is right in the middle of downtown in a tiny little shop. Heads up though, it's cash only! It's super simple food, a super simple menu. For what it is, it was pretty solid. We got a couple of burgers with fries to go; we wouldn't have bebe able to sit, the shop is teeny tiny with a couple of bar seats that were already occupied. There were several servers working, tending to customers, and working the grill. We really enjoyed our food. Overall we had a great experience! If you're ever in Hodgenville give it a try! read more

We got lucky and got two seats before the lunch rush - it wasn't super quick to get the food but everyone was so friendly and the food was delicious. We each got two cheeseburgers and fries. The gal let us try a sip of the 'mello yello' drink (we don't have it where we live) and it was basically a mellow/watered down version of Mountain Dew. All in all, a little gem in a small town on our drive around Kentucky :) I can't imagine we'll ever be here again but I'll recommend it to anyone who visits the area. read more

Laha's (pronounced "lay-HAYZ" is an institution in Kentucky. Rapidly approaching their 100th year in business, they do one thing perfectly - grilled fast food. Sliders, hot dogs, fries, onion rings and chili. No menus, nothing superfluous. It is one lunch counter, so get there off hours or early if you want a seat. There's also a walk up order window, and you can eat at some tables along the town circle. The workers are in constant motion churning out hundreds of hand made, cooked to order burgers, and are always friendly to all. The burgers are covered in steamed onions and a solid shake of black pepper. The Onion Rings are the best you will find in Kentucky. Got a double hamburger. Glad I did because if I had gotten a regular I'm not sure if it would have had any meat on it. Otherwise it tasted good. Pretty sure the fries come from a bag and are put in a deep frier, but with some salt and ketchup they tasted good. Service was pleasant. read more

My daughter been telling up how good this place is, so we went, it was closed the first time but this time they where open through the window only, no sit down, but that was totally good, what wasn't was the food, I ordered the chili dog, it wasn't real good, look at the picture, had no flavor at all the bun was soggy. In reverse order of experience I will start with the double cheese onion burger. Order a minimum of two of these because one is just an appetizer. It is definitely tasty, but lacks the slight crispiness edges of the meat described on True South. And even one is borderline "slider" territory. Again, tasty but not worth another trip off into the Kentucky wilderness. Onion Rings were great. Crispy, fresh cut onion interior and enough grease to bathe the palate. The young woman who took the order sneered when I ordered a double cheese "smash burger". She barked, "what's a smash burger?" Without responding I just said, "Ill have the Dbl CB". Whatever.......And not worth typing out here her treatment of other people ordering behind us as we eagerly, but patiently waited for our order to be prepared. The intoxicating smell of onions being cooked wafted across our faces and filled our nostrils with mouthwatering aroma. This was actually my favorite part. All in all, True South I think over- promised and Laha's Red Castle delivered on the food enough to say we did it. And I'm all for a rude experience to go along with the premium gastro experience in many food stops....But this "ain't" one of them.......Been there done that....Won't be back. Long time establishment of serving up mini pattied burgers seared on a grill with a slather of onions on a Sunny Bun. Sound familiar, but better. Counter seating is at a premium and to go business is booming. Hot dog with a smear of chilli to sog up my Heiners bun, with a slice of cold American processed cheese and then those onions. This hole in the wall brought back memories for my husband of his dad's restaurant in Denver post-WWII. We were between Lincoln's birthplace and boyhood home and bypassed the chain restaurants at the edge of town figuring there had to be something with local flavor. Laha's hit all the notes. Tiny 10-seat counter with a limited menu, we were greeted immediately and asked if we wanted to eat in or take our order to go. We opted for a couple seats at the end of the counter. After relocating to California in the last two years I just HAD to make the drive from Louisville to have a taste of Laha's and they are still just as delicious as I remembered! Drove out to try Laha's myself after watching the True South episode on the town. Ordered their cheeseburger, fries, and sweet tea and was surprised by the 20-minute wait. But the wait was definitely worth it. Perfectly cooked burger with delicious caramelized onions built in, all for $2 and great service by the owner. It's a small unassuming place, but around these parts I can see how it has become an institution. I ordered 10 to bring back to Lexington with me and am already thinking about when I can make it out there again. read more

Great place to eat! The burgers may not have a lot of beef but you won't care--they're delicious! Make it a deluxe and it'll come fully dressed. The chili is tops as is the just like Wendy's nuggets. The chili will come with added pasta so in that regard it's not real chili but it's still real good! The fries aren't half bad either! My wife and I love hamburgers. We will try one just to see if its claims are accurate. To us the In & Out burger is the best from a chain and this has never changed. I also make a mean mesquite smoked burger with Ravens seasoning which departs from mass production to the realms of burger nirvana. Whereas we consider a traditional hamburger with lettuce, mayo , ketchup , tomato , pickles and onions the way a burger should be eaten we both admit there is something special about his burger. In its own right it has erected a new stage and rightly garnered a 10, our highest rating. Voted the best burger in Kentucky in 2017 this experience is magical and if you can divest your mind of preconceived ideas of what a burger should be you will enjoy this burger. It takes a lot for a burger with only meat, onions, cheese ( if you get the cheeseburger ) to stake a in claim in burger lore but this one has been at it since 1934. The stove ,the recipe and the place have historical roots in this small Kentucky town. The drive through the trees which passes right by the historical site of Lincolns cabin is worth the wonderful drive. If your in Bardstown a place of bourbon activities and want a half hour drive to burger heaven through the trees you would do well to check this place out. You will leave surprised that a burger so simple can bewitch you. You will also find yourself looking up the term smash burger and marveling that since 1934 folks way back in the hills of Kentucky have been eating such delicious hamburgers. read more
