We booked a boats here at Lake Mary on the 3rd day of our stay at Mammoth Lakes Camp Grounds. The lake is so beautiful and seems to be well maintained. We rented two boats, one 8 person and another 10 person. I wish there was an option for a bigger boat to accommodate bigger groups but we ended up just making sure to drive to the same areas so that we would be together. The guy that helped us with the boat was very helpful, although he did not have a lot of knowledge about the best fishing spots. Around 6 of us were fishing and before our time ended I was able to catch one fish! :) read more

We celebrated my better half's birthday here last saturday:) The check-in is smooth and fast. They are friendly and will explain everything. We rented the 8 person pontoon boat. My kids had a blast. The rudest and most unwelcoming experience I've ever had. My friends and I got off the trolley at the marina and while waiting for the rest of our group of 18, were considering renting 2 pontoons. While waiting I had to use the restroom. There wasn't an outhouse or other public facility I could see around the area. The only people we saw were the people working the marina. I went down to ask if there were any restrooms I could use and was told to ask the owner who was there speaking to someone. I apologized for interrupting but asked if there was a restroom. He replied "the restroom is for boat renters." So I asked if there were any other restrooms nearby. He rudely said,"there are bathrooms everywhere, just walk around". No explanation. No pointing me in the right direction. Just rude. Later I heard him speaking to other customers and telling them how "he's a Christian so, he doesn't....." . I don't ever remember Jesus being so unwelcoming even if you were a sinner at the well- today's experience was not kind or Christianly. Btw--There were no open bathrooms anywhere in the vicinity that I could find, only cabins in that area. read more

I rented out an 8-person pontoon on Thursday, June 3rd, 2021. When we arrived to this marina, I had a terrible first impression of the owner, Don. He said that they had been waiting for a "Hong and a Kong and a Long." He said, "Which one is it with you Asians?" in a rude tone. That was a major red flag for me. What actually topped our experience was that we had an unfortunate event of one of our sisters falling off the boat due to what seemed like a loosely bolted entrance/exit door of the pontoon. At one point, she was using the railing to slowly walk up to the front of the boat. Next thing we know is that our sister had fallen into the icy water with the door sinking to the bottom of the lake. There were no disclaimers, waivers or instructions administered prior to riding the pontoon. We were just told to always keep a life vest on kids younger than 12 years old. Moreover, we witnessed other boats on the lake with the shade over the pontoon, but we were told that the shade could not be opened "due to the wind." We noticed that our pontoon had possibly a defective shade leg on the right because it was "repaired" with tape. We immediately returned to the marina dock after our sister fell in, and we spoke to one of the employees about the incident. He apologized and claimed that the boats are old and some parts may be defective. I'm thinking in my head, "Then why rent it out, especially to a group with THREE young ones (aged 4 months, 1 and 2 years old)...??????" That wholly BLEW my mind and is such a SAFETY HAZARD. At least have us sign a waiver or let us know beforehand of anything we should be cautious about??? Out of all the times I have rented a boat, this is the first time ever that such an incident has occurred. Even then, I never imagined this actually happening because we are very careful, especially while the boat is moving. The manager, Don, was out of the office at the time. We actually left Mammoth the next day, so we were unable to see Don in person. However, I tried calling and calling on the day of and days after the incident23, but was unable to reach anyone. It always went to the answering machine. I actually believe they may have been screening my calls because my calls would be shortened and go directly to answering machine (instead of going straight to answering machine)???? Our sister is still suffering from the consequences of being given a dilapidated pontoon. She was unable to walk normally for days after. On another note, we had three kids on the pontoon. Although we had a life vest on them, they, or anyone else, could have fallen off the boat; and we were not given warning for any such possibility. This poses an absolute hazard for other guests as well. I am writing this review because I feel that the process of renting out any equipment should be changed. Also, someone should answer the business phone, for Pete's sake... I do not recommend renting from this marina. read more

My girlfriend and I went to the Lake Mary Marina for our first-ever fishing experience this Saturday. Neither one of us had ever held a pole, much less landed a trout. Lucky for us, I called up to the Lake Mary Marina. Saturday was just shy of the season opener. The road up to Lake Mary was still gated, but Don, the Marina's owner, was kind enough to let us follow him up. The lake itself was still mostly covered in ice, which made for stunning Eastern Sierra beauty. Beyond that, Don's team Cam, Brayden, and Ozzie really pulled out all the stops to teach us the ropes of fishing. They showed us how to tie our lines, helped us clear tangles and jams in our reels, and gave us tips on the best fishing spots. What followed was a special day of getting pst the initial learning curve, all the way to actually getting some nibbles and close calls with some big trout! We caught one the next day, but that's another story. For now, just know that the Lake Mary Marina is the place to be if you want to spend a day on the lakes in Mammoth. We came to inquire about renting kayaks for the following day and the gentleman was yelling at us to get off of the property because they are closed even though we did not know. I kindly told him that he does not have to be so rude about it and he raised his voice louder and told us to never come on this property again and that we don't belong in this town. So my last review was from three years ago, but I was just at the marina after they reopened this year and WOW they really care about safety. All of the staff were wearing masks and they were making sure everyone was social distancing and wearing masks too. They also had plenty of hand sanitizer. I had to call and make a reservation (that's new) the lady on the phone, Helen, explaining that they were trying to help keep down the spread in their county. Pretty awesome! I originally wanted to rent a couple of kayaks, but she explained that they had put away a lot of their boats so they could downsize their operations and focus on safety. I was pretty disappointed, but I get it. It's actually pretty cool that they care more about safety than profit. I ended up reserving a motorboat and had a great time! I didn't take it out for the full six hours, but we had a nice picnic lunch on the boat. Highly recommend! read more

Lake Mary is beautiful. A real gem in the Sierra. So serene. The marina rents putt putt boats, pedal boats, paddle boards. We rented a putt putt outboard motor boat for $50 for 2 hours. It was nice...my husband caught a huge trout. Kids enjoyed themselves. It wasn't too crowded for a Saturday. The sun was shining and you can't beat the view. read more

We went up to Mammoth for my boyfriend's birthday. We really wanted to do some water activities and I didn't make reservations. We went to Lake Mary and 1st went to Pokonobe Marina, they gave off a really off vibe. As I went to the counter, I asked if we could rent 4 standup paddleboards. All he said was, "Nope, try Lake Mary Marina." very rudely. I was annoyed but would rather not give Pokonobe Marina my business anyway. When we got to Lake Mary Marina & Store, which was just south of the lake, they were very accommodating. I didn't get any bad vibes from this place. There was plenty of people there of all different types of races there. It looked like they had plenty of water crafts for everybody. I was watching their interactions with the customers, and they were polite & answered any questions they had and any that we had. Now, I know to come here next time. read more

We got a defective kayak and the owner was rude and blamed us. We have kayaked multiple times before, right when we got on the kayak we felt like something is wrong. The kayak was very unstable which caused us to fall in the very cold water soon after starting. We got back on soaking wet and cold and headed back to the dock. The crew did not help us get on the dock and said that the defective kayak could not be replaced. By that time we were cold and upset and did not want to go back in. I went to speak to the owner and asked for a partial refund but he refused even though we got a defective kayak and only kayaked for a short time. ****MUST READ**** If I could add 1000 or more NEGATIVE stars I would. This past weekend I visited Mammoth Lakes. I always stay at Crystal Crag Lodge (which happens to be an amazing place to stay). On Saturday 7/13/19 I went to get information on a Kayak rental. The parking lot was a bit busy so I had to really look for a place to park. There was a gentleman there (who happened to be Don Barrett). Below I have written how our conversation went... Don: "Are you staying at the Marina?" Me: "excuse me, what do you mean?" (I asked that because there's private cabins, two campgrounds, and crystal crag lodge, not one of them is called The Marina) Don: " It's not fucking hard, you're either staying at the Marina or not" Me: "I'm sorry, I don't understand... but you don't have to talked to me like that" Don: "I'm a 71 year old man, and I don't need people like you, people from the south, wetbacks to come up here and give me attitude either" Me: Sir, I am not giving you attitude, I just came here to get information on the boats Him: You don't need to, we don't want your money. Now get your piece of shit truck outta here or I'm going to have you tow. Me: what? Wow!? Don: "Yeah, go you dirty Mexican" Me: "Are you an employee here, or are you the owner?" Don: "Yeah, I'm the owner" Me: " And that's how you treat customers" Don: Go or I will have you tow. Go rent a boat from the other place on other side of the lake they're really nice, they like wetbacks over there. I was shock, I went back to the cabin and kept asking myself... what the F!@#$ just happened? I was so mad and just started to cried. No one has ever made me feel the way he made me feel. I told my wife what had happened and she was upset. She went back to the Marina and told him that I was a combat Veteran who had fought in Iraq and was also injured in Iraq. She asked him if that was the right way to treat Veterans and he told her that he had family members who had served. My wife told him that it was his family members who did and not him... in this case I was the one that served. Yes, I was not born in the USA, I'm Salvadorean by birth, but my heart is with the USA, this has been my country for 30 years and like my wife said, I fought for this country and for the people that didn't have what it takes to join the Armed Forces. I'm going to have to go with 4 stars instead of 5, because I didn't actually get to go out on a boat due to the severe rain and thunderstorms forecast for the scheduled day. The policy deadline for a refund on the fishing motorboat had long past, so I assumed I would just be out the hundred dollars, but weather being as it was, it was the safest choice regardless. I left a message before Lake Mary Marina opened, the day of my scheduled reservation, stating that I would not be showing up due to the weather forecast. I also asked the message machine to consider issuing a "rain check", since the rental policy does not allow for cash refund after 48 hours prior to rental time. I headed out of Mammoth Lakes to avoid yet a third day of thunderstorms, leaving a day ahead of my scheduled stay there. Unbelievably, I received a call while driving back to LA, from Helen, who confirmed that I would not be showing up for my rental, and stated that she "would be happy to give me a gift certificate for the amount of money I had paid", that I could use at any time for a rental-anytime. She said they value their customers, and like to treat them good. Amen to that. Thanks Helen, and the management's fair policies at Lake Mary Marina. See you in the spring. read more

We came to Lake Mary Marina for the first time over Labor Day weekend and spent a wonderful afternoon in the water. Unfortunately, we did not have a great experience with the staff and owner. While the service from both the guys in the shop was really great, we started the day with the wrong boat. They admitted their mistake and helped us by getting 10 of us on an 8 seat pontoon. They also gave us an extra paddle board for the inconvenience but honestly I paid for one, and didn't really need the other. We continued our day after the fiasco of paying for a 12, but getting an 8 seat pontoon boat. About 2pm, 2 hours into our day, kids had to go to restroom so we pulled back Into the marina. While waiting for the family, the crew guy came over to tell me the owner didn't allow 10 people on the boat we were on, funny, because it was your guys who gave us the go to take the boat to begin with since they screwed up, so I tell the guy to send the owner over. Owner didn't come, but instead sent the guy I dealt with in the morning, who was extremely kind and courteous. He told me it was a misunderstanding and to continue our day. We went back on the lake, which is gorgeous, and continued our day. When we came back to the dock, I believe the owner was there and while he was nice, he allowed his crew guy to treat our kids (4,7,11) and family very disrespectfully (get off the boat is what he yelled out at them). We own a place in Mammoth and love this area, but we aren't going to send our renters to Lake Mary marina because of the bad experience we had. We will be returning to Pokonobe Marina at lake Mary. read more

If you're looking to find fish in Lake Mary, just ask one of the staff members and they'll point you in the right direction (ask for a map, too) and tell you what the fish are biting on. We asked them for tips on where to launch our float tubes and counterperson was great about warning us where not to park and get towed vs. where to launch which would be good spots. We liked. Patience was the key over the 4th of July weekend. These guys were awesome. I had read the previous reviews and was reluctant to come here. Nevertheless my family wanted to be on the lake. We arrived and the place was packed. Groups of people hovered around the small entrance with multiple languages. Eventually my wife made it to the front of the line. A young man helped her and directed her with some options. A motor boar, stand up paddle board and a kayak for us. He helped the 8 of us with life jackets and got our kids out in the kayak and SUP first. He then met my mom and I with the other kids at the boat. Total patience in helping my mom. I completely recommend this place! I had so much fun! I discovered this place by accident, rented a kayak, and went out on the lake to try it out. My first time in a kayak. The staff was helpful and gave me their most stable kayak when they found out it was my first time in one. They also gave me quite a bit of overtime for free, which I appreciated. Good parking, beautiful local, attention to safety and instruction. Now the down side: a bunch of guys =no attention to details. The bathroom was clean, but low on soap and TP. The stairs down from the parking lot had not been swept that morning and were gravely, making it hard to get down them without a foot slipping. The path to the store from the parking lot was unkempt and full of big rocks the size of my fist. I fell over one and hit my foot hard on another while taking in the view! Watch out! Pay attention!. These guys run a boat repair and motor shop, too. Their equipment is in good shape. They have fishing supplies and a variety of boats, paddle boards, paddle boats you ride like a bicycle, canoes, motored rowboats and flat catamarans for groups. I saw many families having a wonderful time and watched the staff educate them on water safety and insist everyone had a flotation jacket on and properly fastened. Because of the gasoline in the water and the relatively small size of the lake, there was a dearth of wildlife in the surrounding marshes. I saw one duck, but no birds and no turtles and no fish anywhere in the shallows or deeper water. Also no bugs, no mosquitoes, or other pesky gnats bothered me the whole time. Took kids to catch their first fish. Showed up with nothing and bought it all from them.. then they rigged it for us, so all I had to do was put bait on the hook-STOKED! Tip the crew well they're awesome. Reduced 1 star because I thought the boss was a little tough on his crew. I very much admire his high standards when it comes to making a great customer experience and appreciate that he took an interest in us.. and made sure we were set up well.
