Built in the beginning of the California Gold Rush…read more The history behind the Tower House District is interesting but there's not much to see here except for the Camden House. The Tower House and this district area is historic but the building is no longer there. It was destroyed by fire in 1919. The hotel once stood where Highway 299 is now just up the slope from where an interpretive sign is erected. Tower House Historic District at Whiskeytown is named for Levi Tower, local businessman and a Shasta County politician. The hotel was a popular stopping place and social center, supposedly well known for its excellent accommodations and lavish menus. The area includes his sister Camden's house built in 1852 and is still standing there until now. Not sure if there are tours offered here. We didn't get too close to the house as there was a security camera installed. Nearby is another structure. Not sure what it was used for but it was off limits with a barrier around it, there we saw apple trees with tags of name/species of the fruit tree written inside a plastic covering tied to the tree. The grounds once contained 1,000 trees of apples, pears, peaches, plums, cherries, apricots, nectarines, etc. I mean, Levi Tower's orchard was the largest north of Marysville. Unfortunately, during the Carr Fire in 2018, the majority of the fruit trees burned and just approximately 30 remained. We found the trees with tags on them as we strolled around the area. If visiting in October, guests of the Tower House Historic District were welcomed to pick and taste an apple from the 170-year old tree. Before reaching the Camden House we crossed a wooden footbridge over Clear Creek. There was once a covered bridge built across the creek in the 1860's, and it's unclear when the covered bridge was destroyed, but the original stone piers remain intact and support a footbridge across the creek. Interesting that this was a toll bridge back in the day. 10-cents to walk across, 25-cents to ride over in horseback, and $1.25 to cross by wagon. Review #1911

I'm not sure if they give tours, but it was closed when we went. Looking in the windows, you see old furniture and a home that needs some serious fixing up. Some of the windows are boarded up and covered... it was a bit creepy. I walked around exploring, but I kept thinking something was going to pop out, lol. Too many horror movies. Good thing it was daytime. This area is also the site of the old toll bridge that many gold miners had to pay to cross. Now, you can cross it for free. It is a very short bridge. There are also lots of apple trees around the home. I don't know if you are allowed to pick them when there is fruit, but there are so many different varieties of apples and on each tree, there is a laminated paper that tells you about each type of apple. There's also hiking trails around the back. There's also a private residence on here! Kind of weird, but the house has been around since the early 1900's and I'm guessing that the owners never were willing to turn over ownership to the government, so it remains a private residence. It was interesting to see the history behind this place. There is so much history about the gold rush era. It's cool to see, but I don't know if it's something I could want to keep coming back to see.

She wasn't pushy at all and didn't upsell me anything - just gave me all the tips and info. We decided on a tandem snowmobile for an hour with a guide. We arrived 20 minutes late but she was so professional - she shortened and made the check in process so easy. There was a cabin with fire where you can change since Deer Mountain was quite cold and was snowing that day desolate the snow drought. She was mega attentive and taught us everything and told us exactly where we were going. She took couple of pictures for us and explained what we'll see had it not been so foggy. On the way back when we stopped at a viewpoint my boyfriend accidentally accelerated and we toppled right where the cliff started - Michele rushed over and helped us up and we genuinely concerned for our well being. We're so grateful she was our guide and can't recommend her enough. She's an amazing person with a beautiful smile and we definitely suggest everyone go snowmobile with her, especially first timers!

Michele is super fun and an overall great human. She's energetic and patient, and flexible with how you want to spend your time on the water. We went wakeboarding and enjoyed tubing! She even took us to see Mt. Shasta from the lake, which was beautiful. We'll definitely be back again!
