No advance warning .. the dock cleats are in need of replacement as are some power breakers. The seasonal boaters seemed to be less than happy about the arrival of transients to enjoy the resort. The grounds are beautiful and the setting idyllic. The lodge reminds you of the movie Dirty Dancing , but at times it also resembles a horror movie . The pool is small but nice , and there is a dog friendly beach on the lake side with a Lake Michigan beach a short walk away. The resort needs to maintain the dog run areas and stock the dog waste dispensers as they were all empty throughout the resort. A notice that the bar would be closed on a Saturday for a private event would have been nice . Also larger boats are put on the outside wall and there is not a no wake area around them . Locals come by within feet to view boats and not at a no wake speed, doesn't make more a comfortable mooring. They need a no wake zone around marina and restrooms for Marina guests hat are not a half a mile walk.... Though I was able to close my move ring on my watch just walking the dogs to their area and me to the restroom. They do have great pizza and cocktail menu looks great but private event and closure Sunday to Wednesday made us unable to sample the tantalizing drinks .

I am sure that the innkeepers are trying to do all that they can to preserve this hotel (originally built in 1904) but it is apparent that many millions of dollars are needed very soon to repair the structure before the decaying infrastructure ruins the hotel forever. With the downturn in the economy- I feel it's a struggle to keep quaint inns such as this open for business. I can only hope that in the age of big bailouts for corporations; the powers that be can find some aid money to save the Portage Point Inn. That being said- Portage Lake is certainly one of the most beautiful destinations in the North country of the USA. The serenity of the nearby woods, the spectacular sunsets and all of the tourist destinations in Manistee and Benzie counties are "what the doctor ordered" for a wonderful and memorable romantic vacation or a family getway.

Cozy is a fancy word for small, isn't it? Basically, you sleep and eat and clean up there, spend the rest of the day enjoying Michigan, and the cabins are in the heart of a lot of things to see and do. Owners were very nice. Joyce fed us beans and cornbread one night, she was most helpful when asked. Overall, a good experience at a reasonable price.

We loved it so much that when we decided we had to come back to Ludington, we worked the cost into our budget specifically so we could stay here again. Ludington stole our hearts, and this place has become part of the experience for us. The location is absolutely spectacular. You're directly across the street from the beach and lighthouse access, and you can walk into town in about 10-20 minutes for ice cream, snacks, shopping, restaurants, and all the cute little things that make Ludington such a fun beach town. You're also right near the harbor. We hardly needed our car once we arrived. I really love the amenities here because they aren't trying to be over-the-top. Everything is simple, comfortable, and thoughtfully done. There's a pool that goes all the way to 9 feet deep, with a rope separating the deep and shallow areas. I love spending time out there, and there are plenty of tables and lounge chairs. They even provide pool towels, which is such a nice touch. Our room was small, but it was very thoughtfully laid out. We had a comfortable queen-size bed, a little table with two chairs, Wi-Fi, a microwave, and a mini fridge WITH an actual freezer. I know that sounds like such a small thing, but having a real little freezer is incredibly convenient when you're traveling! I also really appreciate the little details. There are cute retro coasters, a little guide with information about the property and Ludington, coffee with flavored creamers, and really nice bathroom products. The body wash smelled SO good. The linens deserve some credit too. There's nothing fancy about them, but the sheets are white, clean, crisp cotton, and the towels are nice and thick. They even provide a makeup towel, which I always appreciate. There's also a spot where you can grab an extra towel or blanket yourself whenever you need one. I LOVE this. Nobody wants to have to call the front desk because they need an extra washcloth or towel. It's just one more little thing that makes staying here easy. And because you're staying directly by the beach, I love that they have a broom available too. There is ALWAYS going to be sand when you stay at a beach, so having a way to sweep it up is just practical and thoughtful. Even though there are quite a few units, I've found it to be surprisingly quiet. The staff has also always been incredibly kind and accommodating. You get one parking space per unit, which has never been an issue for us. I'm not sure what the arrangement would be if you needed additional parking, but for the two of us it has been perfect. The only minor complaint I could possibly make is that the room does feel a little humid at times. However, the air conditioner worked absolutely fabulously, so we were never uncomfortable or too hot. This isn't a luxury resort, and the rooms aren't huge or fancy. That's not what makes this place special. It's the location, the cleanliness, the thoughtful little touches, the pool, the friendly staff, and the fact that it makes being in Ludington so easy. It feels simple, comfortable, and genuinely cared for. We loved it enough to come back for a second year, and I have a feeling we'll be back again.

Even if you cancel 2 months before--you would still be charged $50. On the two nights I was there they did not fill all the rooms (and there are only 7 rooms) so I definitely wouldn't suggest booking in advance. Why risk a schedule change arising & you losing money? There are other hotels in Ludington that allow you to not pay a cent until you arrive--no charge if you need to cancel. Here is the thing that really got me. I made a reservation back in April for a stay in July. I requested Room 6 or 7 & said I would prefer an end room if available. I also shared that it was a rough trip for me because it was my first trip after my husband passed away & I was coming alone to visit our favorite place. She not only emailed me but also called me & said that she was going to be able to give me the end room, number 7. She also said she would keep in mind the information I had shared with her about the loss of my husband. I had no idea what that meant. Extra TLC perhaps? Another thing the reservation had stated was that there was "Early check-in available on request." & "Late check-out available on request." Well, I emailed regarding both & got no response. I had wanted to perhaps drop off my luggage early so it wouldn't be in the back of my vehicle when it was parked and i was walking around town. When I arrived in July I was taken aback at the lack of attention to detail. First of all, no one was at the desk--you have to pick up a cell phone & call a number and wait for them to come over from the house. And when she ambled down she said to me, "You are in Room 5." I said, "No, I am in Room 7. You promised me the end room." She said, "Yeah, sorry. There is a glitch in the system. I gave it to someone else." (A glitch in the system--there are only SEVEN rooms--write stuff down!) She made no mention of my newly widowed state--& the solution to the problem--she offered me a bigger room (?) I said, "No. The last thing I want is a bigger room--I am here ALONE. If you want to charge me less because you weren't able to honor what you promised me, I'll be okay with that." And what was really frustrating was that I had had a booking come up for my second date there, a job, but I turned it down because I didn't want to lose my deposit on the room--THAT SHE ENDED UP GIVING TO SOMEONE ELSE. She did back down and ended up giving me the room she had promised. So then she gave me a sheet of paper with the room code--she let me into the room. I was not impressed with it--but as soon as I got my stuff into the room I thought to myself--I better make sure I am able to get back into the room--because she just struck me as absent minded. I shut the door and tried the code over and over. You probably guessed it by now--she had given me the wrong code. So I went back to the office and called again--from the cell phone sitting on the desk--no one in the office--and was given the correct code over the phone--with no apology. Then, because I was exhausted and had a bit of work to do--I decided to make myself a pot of coffee--I looked at the coffee maker and was disgusted--there was a ton of dust on it--and as I looked around--I realized the whole place looked like it hadn't been dusted--so back off to the office I went--called the cell phone again sitting on the desk--no one in the office--and got one of them to bring me a cloth and cleaner--and yes, I cleaned my own room. The carpet was dirty too--my socks and slippers became black from walking on it. Another thing of note was this is the first time I had ever been in a hotel room that did not have a place for you to sit & have a meal or sit to work at your computer--no small table and chair(s). In order to use my computer I had to pull a rocking chair up to a recliner--I had to sit on the rocking chair & hunch over the recliner with my computer on that. It forced me to sit in a position that killed my back. When I arrived in the room it was HOT. The windows were open--I needed to immediately shut them and get the air conditioning on. They were SO hard to shut. It took me a long time & a lot of effort. The view out the back window was onto an alley with garbage cans & there were spider webs in the window. The view out the front window is the parking lot. The bathroom was so tiny and the shower the smallest I had ever encountered--and I am tiny--5'7" 125 lbs.--It was like showering in a box--just awful. In the pictures on their website there are billowy country style curtains on the windows. In my room there were plain white shades on one window and a single white drape on the other. There are many other choices for hotels in the area with better views, cleaner rooms, better furnished rooms, more reasonable prices, less absent minded hosts and much better cancellation policies. I would choose one of those for your stay.

The house is gorgeous and has nearly all original details from 100 years ago. The room I was in (the Canfield Suite) was beautifully redone with the most gorgeous window seat I've seen. Everything was extremely clean and beautifully decorated. The food was excellent! They cater well to specific food restrictions and changed the menu daily. If they have the coffee cake or the blueberry French toast bake (similar to a quiche), you will have seconds! The team there is superb and we're very welcoming. They are the new owners of the property and seem to have a lot of plans for themed weekends and events. They were keen to make everyone's stay perfect and we're so helpful even when my flights were canceled multiple times and I needed to unexpectedly extend my stay.
