Lake Whitney State Park is larger than expected. If you want a day out at the lake, it's perfect and doesn't disappoint. My main draw to Texas State Parks is the hiking. Lake Whitney has two, one mile trails, which doesn't offer much for actually hiking, because they are so short. It's the reason I personally docked a star. However, I understand that not all Texas State Park's focus on hiking. It's a very nice resource, if you live in the area.

If you ever find yourself in TX I SO recommend this park. Whether you have a trailer a tent or none you can rent their shelters. They have them right on the lake so gorgeous so quiet dark skies. It was absolutely fantastic. Come here with your group, come here with your whole family. Have a family reunion I don't care do it all. Staff was super accommodating. I ended up extending my stay and they were able to switch my campsite so that I only had to move one time and then I could see my new campsite from that location.

    Campfire!!!

Nice Park big park spread out. We stayed in the full hookups area "horseshoe Loop" in site 28. Nice roomy sites & clean. Great staff, friendly & informative. Nice Lake, we swam but did not do any fishing on our stay. Easy hikes, 2 trails & much longer hikes on the roads. There are ruins of a Towash settlement inside the Park.

Came out from San Antonio for a fun weekend. This is such an amazing park. Lots of space to camp and really clean. Great little beach a fun fishing area. Lots of wildlife so be aware if you have your pet. Saw a snake and scorpion. Went fishing and caught a catfish and some striped bass. Can't wait to come back!'

Lake Whitney State Park is a pretty good state park, if I was a fisherman. It wasn't very busy but for hikers, this really isn't the best with only 2 trails.

It is very beautiful and above all clean, excellent place to rest, everything is very good, we had an incredible time!

This was our second camping trip at Lake Whitney State Park. We absolutely love coming here! The staff is so friendly and there are plenty things to do! We reserved a screened shelter and were pleased to find that they had been recently re-built. Apparently Whitney had quite a bit of flooding and the shelters were under water. Instead of just patching them, the tote them down and started fresh! The new shelters are beautiful! While we were there our children decided to take part in becoming Junior Park Rangers. They loved it and learned a lot about the history of the park and the rules and regulations. They got to take an oath and received certificates and "official" Junior Park Ranger badges. We will definitely be back!

We stayed here over Easter weekend and booked about a month in advance. There were 10 of us, I alone have 4 children ranging from 11-2 years old. We were at site 121 directly across from the bathrooms. The camp sites were great! Well maintained and beautifully spaced, we definitely felt like we could play music and relax without bothering any neighbors! Almost every site had a good amount of shade and plenty of spots to hang hammocks! Bathrooms were great! Clean and regularly checked on by maintenance! Showers too! The hillside where we were was a little difficult to get down to the water but once you knew where to go it was great swimming! Neat little hiking trails and some good fishing spots as well! Everyone we encountered was courteous and friendly. All in all my family and I had a wonderful trip and we will definitely be staying here again!

There is a waterfalls and a river and there is a good sized picnic area w plenty of benches. There are two sets of horseshoe pits a half basketball court and two volleyball courts. There is a nice overview of the river and falls from the bridge. According to the chamber of commerce the pavilion and or the stone tables as well as the stairs were built during the Great Depression as one of the building projects at the time. There are stairs down to the river but just a warning the steps are a bit steep and no food or drink is allowed down past the stairs. Once you get down there it really is beautiful. According to the local I talked with there today they allow swimming there in the spring if the water level is high enough. The water level changes a lot. The park has been recently renovated according to a sign that I had trouble photographing. You can see in the older pics that the foliage was becoming more overgrown and it is indeed tidier now. When the water is low supposedly there are paintings on the rocks that are hundreds of years old. There is some differences of opinion about who did the paintings. This town has a lot of history and I did read a sign that this is George W Bush's hometown. The pavilion is very nice and historical. The park is on fourth street. The address on yelp takes you to a historical plaque. Just look at the map from there and turn right at fourth and your there. Follow the green.

Over the course of this time, I've seen this park go from it's best days to it's worst. Thank goodness, during the last couple of years the City of Hillsboro has been diligently cleaning, updating and repairing this place into something they can be proud of again. So, currently this park has a walking path, a few playground areas, some basketball hoops, one pavilion, a concert area (with working xylophones), a couple of baseball "areas" (I can't say diamonds, because they're just grassy areas with a fence for guarding foul balls) and one soccer field. With all the work they've been doing for this park, it's not perfect. The (one and only) bathrooms are usually a mess, the pavilion is old (as in, been there since I was a kid with the only repair being a paint job), the only thing you'll be doing on that basketball court is shooting baskets and the exercise break areas on the walking path are either fine or in poor shape. Aside from those issues though, this is a great place to take the kids for bike riding or playing on the playground equipment. But if you're looking for a more sports orientated park, I would suggest going to Wallace Park instead (just north of this park on Hwy 81).

There's actual dinosaur tracks preserved in the rock at Dinosaur Valley State Park, and that just adds even more fun to the experience! We went for the day and the entrance fee was $8 per adult. They accept cards and cash at the Ranger Station. Prior to arriving I tried to buy tickets online, but I kept only seeing tickets for overnight camping. Nonetheless, we were still able to pay at the entrance and we were even able to get out and use the restroom facilities at the entrance. Once you pay your entrance fee, a ranger will give you a trail map. There is ample parking inside the park, so there are lots of possibilities on where to start your adventure. We started on the Pawluxy River trail and crossed over to the main track site where the dinosaur prints are very clear. The river crossing has slightly protruding rocks that you have to navigate on foot to get across the river. I wore hiking boots and I think this was ideal for the environment. From there we switched to the overlook trail where the elevation is 850 ft, so you get a great view of the whole Pawluxy River Valley. From there we descended to the Black-capped Vireo Trail, then crossed the Pawluxy River to make our way back to our car. While there's endless combinations of hikes you can take, ours took about 3 hours. Along the way there were lots of people. Mostly gathered at the river and at the tracks. The rest of the trails were actually very quiet and peaceful. In addition to hiking, there are other points of interest. There are dinosaur models, a swimming hole and of course multiple dinosaur track sites. Overall, Dinosaur Valley is a great state park with something for everyone!

We brought water shoes with us and walked in the water in some of the shallow parts right next to million year old tracks! What an experience for our family. By the time we were leaving, the park was filling up quick. We drove around and checked out the playgrounds and camp sites. It would be awesome to camp out in the park.
